A “G.A.T.E.”-Way to the Future at Lincoln Elementary Lincoln Lions are leaping into a bright future! Fifty-six Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) students in the 3rd – 5th grades are exploring and celebrating their potential through unique education opportunities both in and out of the classroom. The GATE program at Lincoln Elementary is threefold: identified students are clustered into GATE classrooms, participate in after school enrichment lessons on site, and are invited to attend GATE Super Saturday events off campus. Lincoln students in the 3rd – 5th grades who qualify for the program are clustered into classes in which teachers have been trained in the tenets of GATE and have received Gifted Education Certificates from the University of Southern California. Through a yearlong curriculum, teachers developed the specialized knowledge and skills needed to challenge GATE students

and also to address the varying needs, interests and abilities of all students. For example, students in a GATE class might use the different depth and complexity prompts to delve into a math inquiry lesson or the question of what influenced European settlement in North America. In addition to being clustered into classrooms, GATE

students at Lincoln participate in creative enrichment lessons after school. The December/ January session focused on visual arts. Students took part in several projects, such as animating digital figures on the computer and completing an acrylic painting on canvas. In February and March, Lincoln Lions will learn coding and computer program-

ming through MinecraftEdu, a version of the popular game designed specifically for the classroom. The final April/May session will center around a theatrical production of Disney’s The Lion King Kids. Students will perform the beloved Disney songs on stage as well as work behind the scenes with costuming and props.

The third part of the GATE program at Lincoln Elementary involves Super Saturday events held at different sites throughout the District. Lincoln, Roosevelt, Wirtz, and Los Cerritos Schools have joined forces to host four “edutainment” adventures
