Four Paramount USD schools named Top Public Schools for Underserved Students
F
our schools in the Paramount Unified School District have been recognized as Top Los Angeles Public Schools for Underserved Students. This recognition is awarded by Innovate Public Schools, an educational non-profit organization working in collaboration with the University of Southern California Sol Price Center for Social Innovation and the USC Rossier School of Education. Wesley Gaines Elementary School, Hollydale K-8 School, Jefferson Elementary School and Lincoln Elementary School were among only 279 schools in all of Los Angeles County to receive this recognition. As part of a rigorous selection process, "Top" schools needed to meet all these criteria: Show evidence of closing the achievement gap for underserved students who are Latino or African American. Have at least 95% of students participate in state testing. Enroll a representative proportion of underserved students. At a May 4 event to honor all Top schools, teams from Paramount USD schools and District representatives attended a conference and recognition ceremony at the USC Tutor Campus Center (see photo at the right).

Paramount 8th graders register for college

In May, 30 Paramount Unified School District 8th graders registered as students at Compton College as part of a new partnership between the school district and the college. “This will be our first cohort of students who will be dual-enrolled at both Paramount High School and Compton College,” said Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Educational Services Ryan Smith. Called Early College, the program will provide these students with the opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts degree in Administration of Justice along with their These Paramount 8th graders (shown with their families) will be students in high school and college at the same time. A graduate with this type of degree can pursue a job as a lawyer, police officer, detective, FBI agent, probation officer, and the like. Because this degree is transferrable to four-year colleges, students who have earned it would be halfway to a bachelor’s degree in a related field. At the recent orientation, school district and college staff came together to welcome students and their parents and worked through the college enrollment process together. Compton College Vice President for Student Services Elizabeth Martinez said to the students and their families: “We are so proud of each of you for making this commitment. The road ahead will not be easy, but when it is all finished in four years, you will be able to say you are a high school and a college graduate!” Courses for the Early College students will begin this summer.
