Exploring the “World of Words” at Wesley Gaines Wesley Gaines Elementary was pleased to welcome Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre on campus for a bilingual parent workshop. Our parents were delighted with one of Kaiser’s signature programs focusing on literacy and how it impacts a child’s health and well-being. The workshop also supported our efforts to increase the school-to-home connection and expand parental involvement. Parents were invited to explore a “World of Words” and learn ways to encourage reading at home. The workshop provided parents with the skills needed to support student learning as well as
tips to incorporate a print rich environment into their child’s everyday life. Parents were excited to leave the workshop with important tips and information regarding the positive im-
pact that literacy has in their child’s reading and writing skills. They were also thrilled to receive a free book, and participate in multiple opportunities to win raffle prizes. At Wesley Gaines, we be-
Mokler Celebrates Families
In this fast paced society there are many reasons it may be difficult to spend quality time with our families. However, the long term benefits of spending quality time are well worth the effort. Among many of its benefits is the promotion of social and academic achievement, problem solving skills, conflict resolution, team work and creating life-long family bonds. At Mokler School, we believe it takes a village to raise healthy happy children. Parents and schools do not work in isolation but together build the strong foundation each child needs. With this in mind, our Counselor began a series of meetings and events called Focus on the Family. These events included: • Family Fun Night - defining quality time to ensure family bonding • Daddy Daughter Dance - raising girls to be young ladies and the impact of fathers on self-esteem • Mom and Son Date Night - teaching boys to be gentlemen and the important role a mother has in her son’s life • Hero Day - people in our community make a difference and so can you • Cultural Awareness through Literature - understanding through diversity that everyone is special • College Awareness Week preparing for academic success through goal-setting. Although these activities were fun, they were also informative and enriching to the lives of our families. Events included information on why it’s important to engage in certain types of activities with children, how to do these things with fidelity and where to access additional resources. Students who have their emotional and physical needs met at home tend

spire students to make healthier life choices.” We look forward to having them on campus again. Nadya Nieto Counselor
