Congratulations to Deputy Mike Abbot
T
he Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez congratulated Deputy Mike Abbot on his recent promotion to sergeant for the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department. Deputy Abbot worked at the Paramount USD School Resource Office for 10 years. His new assignment will be working at the Men’s Central Jail in Downtown Los Angeles. The District thanks Deputy Abbot for his dedication to our children, staff and community.

a Junta Directiva de Educación y la Superintendente Dra. Ruth Pérez felicitaron al agente auxiliar del sheriff Mike Abbot por su reciente ascenso a sargento del Departamento del sheriff del Condado de Los Ángeles. El agente auxiliar del sheriff Abbot trabajó en la Oficina de Recursos Escolares de Paramount USD durante 10 años. Su nueva asignación será trabajar en la cárcel central de hombres en el centro de Los Ángeles. El Distrito le agradeció al agente auxiliar del sheriff Abbot por su dedicación a nuestros niños, personal y comunidad.
iddle school teachers and students across Paramount Unified School District are now using newly adopted History-Social Science instructional materials, National Geographic Learning (NGL), as they engage in the process of historical thinking. This process invites students to learn how to ask questions about the past, seek information, and develop informed opinions. These abilities will help students to separate fact from fiction, an important skill that students will need as they grow up and become decision-making citizens. Fritz Fischer, a contributing consultant for NGL explains: “By teaching students to utilize the skills, concepts, and understandings key to historical thinking, we teach students how to better navigate their own lives.” Each day, teachers and students alike are excitedly learning more about shifts in History-Social Science and how National Geographic Learning may be used to promote the process of historical thinking. Currently, teachers are organizing their instruction around questions for students to explore rather than memorizing pieces of information. To support this, each unit and chapter of National Geographic Learning includes essential questions inviting students to think more critically about key historical events. For example, in grade 8, students may consider: “Why were Americans inspired to move west?” By using discussion questions and inquiry-based activities, students can draw conclusions and be able to present a knowledgeable point of view.
Additionally, middle school students may use their Chromebooks to access lessons in Marukan Cup winner: Osvaldo Galaz National Geographic Learning digitally, allowing them to analyze visuals, interpret maps, and

uperintendent Ruth Pérez and the Board of Education recognized Paramount High School student Osvaldo Galaz for his recent participation in the 5th Annual Marukan Cup of Excellence Cooking Competition at Cerritos College and winning first place in the High School category.
High School contestants were invited to compete with current Cerritos College students in the Culinary Arts program and alumni of the program for the first time at the Marukan Cup of Culinary Excellence on October 19, 2018. While the categories were judged by division, the prizes remained the same. Contestants were given the same guidelines and had 60 minutes to prepare and complete their dishes. Contestants were also asked to explain their dishes. Contestants also had the opportunity for some one-on-one time with judges and obtained advice. Congratulations to Osvaldo for winning first place and for receiving a $1,000 award!

Ganador de Marukan Cup: Osvaldo Galaz

a Superintendente Ruth Pérez y la Mesa Directiva de Educación reconocieron al estudiante Osvaldo Galaz de la preparatoria de Paramount por su reciente participación en la 5o Competencia Anual de Excelencia Culinaria Marukan Cup en Cerritos College y por ganar el primer lugar en la categoría de preparatoria. Los concursantes de la preparatoria fueron invitados a competir con los estudiantes actuales de Cerritos College en el programa de artes culinarias y con ex alumnos del programa por primera vez en la Excelencia Culinaria Marukan Cup el 19 de octubre de 2018. Aunque las categorías fueron juzgadas por división, los premios seguían siendo iguales. Los concursantes recibieron las mismas pautas y tuvieron 60 minutos para preparar y completar su plato. También se les pidió a los concursantes que explicaran sus platos. Los concursantes también tuvieron la oportunidad de pasar tiempo uno a uno con los jueces y obtener asesoramiento. ¡Felicitaciones a Osvaldo por ganar el primer lugar y por recibir un premio de $1,000!

With the use of National Geographic Learning, middle school students will have many opportunities to explore and think critically. This year promises to be insightful as teachers and students continue to engage in activities and discussions that promote “thinking like historians.”
