Paramount Unified Board Member Honored as City’s 2019 Citizen of the Year
L
inda Garcia, who has dedicated 20 years as a member of the Paramount Unified School District Board of Trustees and volunteering around the community, has been selected as Paramount’s 2019 Citizen of the Year. Garcia, who was honored by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks on March 11 at the Paramount Elks Lodge, received nominations for her ongoing efforts of making significant changes in people’s lives. Garcia has been a dedicated member of the District community her entire life, attending Lincoln Elementary School and Paramount Junior High and graduating from Paramount High School. She is a member of Paramount’s Women’s Club, Paramount Tepic Sister Cities Club, Paramount Elks Club and Paramount Lady Elks Club, demonstrating her commitment to community involvement. As a cancer survivor and an active supporter of American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Garcia has raised over $15,000 in donations that go directly to the community of Paramount for cancer research, health and wellness services. “We are so proud to have Linda Garcia as part of our Paramount Unified family,” Superintendent Dr. Ruth Pérez said. “It has been an absolute honor to experience Linda’s devotion, motivation and selflessness, and she deserves to be commended for her hard work and dedication to our District and community.”

Thousands of Paramount USD students get free eye exams and glasses
T
hrough an expansive project organized by the Paramount Rotary Club, Paramount Unified School District has partnered for the second year with Vision To Learn, a nonprofit organization that has already aided about 15,000 Paramount USD students this year by conducting eye exam screenings and providing free glasses. Vision To Learn recently celebrated its 100,000th eye exam screening during its visit to Jackson Middle School (see the picture at the right). Vision To Learn optometrists work out of a mobile clinic that travels to different schools every day. Students are examined on the bus and, if glasses are prescribed, they can choose their own frames. Hollydale School and Jackson Middle School students enjoyed picking out their frames from a wide selection of colors and sizes available.

Glasses are delivered to students at school within three weeks. All Vision To Learn services—from exams to glasses—are provided free to the children.
