Job Fair brings together many companies and job seekers from nine communities
M
ore than 200 local job seekers got together with companies from nine cities at the highly successful Job Fair hosted by a partnership among the City of Paramount, Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Development Center (SELACO) and the Paramount Chamber of Commerce. Southern California Gas Company (SoCal Gas) sponsored the event on August 31 at Paramount Park and also provided breakfast for a record number of 60 vendors. This important community event gave employers and prospective employees a chance to meet, assess opportunities and hold private one-on-one job interviews on the spot. This was a chance for job seekers to interact with representatives from a wide variety of companies from the following cities that work with SELACO: Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Norwalk and Paramount. Paramount Mayor Brenda Olmos and Councilmember Peggy Lemons were on hand to open the event and hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony (see photo at top right) to welcome Paramount to the SELACO family of cities. Also attending was Councilmember Sonny Santa Ines from the City of Bellflower, Daniel Cervantes from the office of California State Senator Lena Gonzalez and Adrian Landa from the office of California Assemblyman Anthony Rendon. SELACO Executive Director Yolanda Castro and Business Services Manager Ben Sandoval arranged vendor participation and brought in counselors to coach job seekers in interview skills and resume improvement. The Paramount city staff worked hard with preparations, including providing a COVID-19 checkpoint and other health and safety precautions. The Paramount Chamber of Commerce organized the overall layout and set-up, as well as breakfast for vendors. The Paramount Chamber plans to hold its own annual Job & Community Fair in March 2022, contingent on public health guidance. The event was cancelled last year due to COVID-19.
