All American Park upgraded, rededicated

A

ll American Park, located at 13330 Orizaba Avenue in Paramount, was rededicated in a special ceremony in August following extensive improvements and upgrades, including more picnic tables, a new picnic shelter, additional trees, ballfield lights for night soccer games, a repaved parking lot and, most recently, new basketball courts. Taking part in the rededication ceremony were members of the Paramount City Council and the Cheer Squad from Paramount High School, as well as a contingent of youngsters who tried out the new courts (see the photo at right). Northgate Market and Bimbo Bakeries donated food for the event, and California Assemblymember Anthony Rendon provided basketballs that were given out for free. Roosevelt Elementary School was originally located on the site. When the State of California built the 105 Freeway, Caltrans wanted the property as a retention basin for storm-water runoff from the freeway. Consequently, the school was moved to 13451 Merkel Avenue, and the City of Paramount suggested that turning the space into a park could still meet the Caltrans requirement while also creating a new recreational resource for residents. Caltrans agreed to the idea. These discussions occurred in the late 1980s, and when Paramount was named an All American City by the National Civic League in 1988, it inspired the name of the new park, which opened in 1990. The improvements came just in time for the park’s 30th anniversary next year.

Paramount City Council members and the Paramount High School Cheer Squad joined local youngsters to celebrate the rededication of All American Park.

Kimberly’s dancers win KAR’s National Grand Championship

F

ifteen young ladies from Kimberly’s Dance Studio in Paramount proved that they were number 1 (as they’re showing you in the photo at the left) when they won the National Grand Championship in dance competition sponsored by Kids Artistic Revue (KAR) at the La Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. Studio owner and choreographer Kimberly Tapia noted that two of their dances had high scores in divisional competition, sending the girls to the Star Showcase Finals. Their dancing to the hip-hop song “Recess” brought home that tall championship trophy. Kimberly’s Dance Studio recently celebrated its 15th anniversary.
