RECREATION AND PARKS MONTH At the Monday, July 6th City Council Meeting, Mayor Megan Sladek read a proclamation for Recreation and Parks Month. July is officially dedicated to our amazing parks and recreation programs highlighting the "Power of Parks" and those who make it all possible. by the National Recreation and Parks Association. Recreation and Parks brings us all together, fostering connection, play, community, nature, belonging and overall well-being, giving us spaces to play. Our Oviedo staff keep our parks clean, create programs for seniors, kids and all ages, and make sure our parks are maintained to the highest level of service to our community. Be sure to thank them if you see them out there working!

ECHAMBERS

The City of Oviedo Public Arts Board are looking for artists who are interested in displaying their artwork at City Hall! Art in the Chambers is a program that began in 2024 and features artists works on the walls of the City Council Chambers. The display is quarterly (sometimes longer) and is open to the public during working hours. Pieces can be sold with 25% of the proceeds going to the Public Art Board. The City is looking for Central Florida or Oviedo artists who are looking to display their work!

250 YEARS OF FREEDOM Our Recreation and Parks, along with the Oviedo Mall, knocked our July 4, 2026 event out of the park! The rain did not hold us back from celebrating inside the Mall featuring dozens of vendors, character actors, activities for the kids, open shops, food, drinks and live performances on the stage. We also featured a “Military Walk Through Time” by Dillards and a 3-minutes video segment about how the U.S.A. came to be. There was so much history brought to life! Before the Fireworks, there was a live performance of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on stage and the crowd roared with applause after! The rain and lightning let up just enough for the spectacular fireworks show seen by thousands around Oviedo!

Thinking About Running for City Office? The 2026 City Election is coming up on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and if you’re considering serving your community, now is the time to start preparing! Candidate election packets are available for pick-up beginning in March at the City Clerk’s Office. We encourage prospective candidates to review materials early and plan ahead for the qualifying period. Oviedo High School Safety Implementation Oviedo High School to Implement Additional Safety and Security Enhancements for 2026-2027 School Year As part of Seminole County Public Schools’ continued commitment to school safety and campus security, Oviedo High School will implement safety enhancements ahead of the 2026-2027 school year that you will need to be aware of. The gate on King Street will be closed during the instructional day from 7:40 am – 2:00 pm and from 7:40 am – 1:00 pm on early-release Wednesdays, beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. This change helps to better manage campus access and reinforce perimeter security during school hours. Students, families, and visitors will continue to access the campus through the main campus entrance located on Pine Street. These updates are designed to strengthen campus access procedures, improve visitor management, and support a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. Additional information regarding traffic flow, visitor access, and campus procedures will be shared with families and the community prior to the start of the school year. As always, we appreciate the Oviedo community's partnership and support as these important improvements are implemented. New Sidewalk Construction - Starting Monday, July 6, 2026, construction will begin the intersection of Lockwood Blvd. and CR 426. This project consists of constructing a new sidewalk connecting the entrance of Shane Kelly Park to the existing sidewalk on North Lockwood Blvd. This project will require temporary lane closures and or traffic interruptions with the presence of flaggers from July 13, 2026, through October 9, 2026. The lane closures will occur between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on weekdays. For the safety of workers and motorists, please follow all signage and detour instructions when traveling in the area. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sugarberry Pond Work - Monday, June 29, a City Contractor started work on Sugarberry Pond located in the Alafaya Woods Blvd. community. The purpose of this project is to improve the drainage for Sugarberry pond and upgrade the stormwater systems. This work will be from June 29. 2026 to October 9, 2026 with temporary shifting lanes . This will occur occasionally when it is needed, from Sugarberry Trail to McCully Ct, please drive with caution and follow the signalization and detour signs for the safety of the workers, pedestrians, and vehicular traffic. This work will not affect the access to the school via sidewalk for pedestrians and bikes

Due to the growing demand on the Florida Aquifer system, the City of Oviedo has taken steps to conserve water through programs that educate the public on water conservation strategies, water restrictions, and the use of reclaimed water for irrigation. The process of water conservation reduces demand on the Florida Aquifer system, thereby preventing a decline in freshwater levels.

Conservation Inside and Outside There are many steps that residents or business owners can take to help in water conservation:

Step 1: Check for leaky pipes or fixtures inside and outside the residence or business. The slow drip from a pipe, faucet, toilet, etc. can lead to thousands of gallons lost per year. Fixing leaks and replacing old plumbing fixtures with water-saving devices could save a residential family of four (4) about 30,000 gallons of water each year. Step 2: Replace fixtures with water-saving devices. A water conservation device saves water, energy, and, most importantly, money for the resident or business owner. Step 3: Check the irrigation schedule shown in the water restrictions section below for the optimal time. Watering Restrictions These restrictions apply to all municipal water users, including all City of Oviedo alternative, surface, and potable water users. The City recommends reclaimed water use be limited to no more than two (2) days a week. Water use is restricted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

During the weekend of July 11, the lifeguard staff spent time doing some in-service training to continue keeping their skills sharp. They did water rescue scenarios and most importantly, child and infant CPR. They are on duty Riverside Pool, Big Kahuna Pool and the Splash Zone, keeping a very close eye on everyone who uses the facilities. Well done!

We are halfway through Summer Camp and the kids are having such a great time!! We’ve done so many activities like rock climbing, playgrounds, splash zone and field trips around town!

Door Alarms Door Alarms The Oviedo Fire Department has door and window alarms available to give away, courtesy of the Wesley Seth Foundation. As kids get out of school and spend more time at home or areas near water, we want to make sure caregivers are aware of the program to keep kids safe! These alarms will activate if a door or window is opened, making it easy for a child to slip out and fall into the water. It’s all the rage and we have plenty of courts in Oviedo to play on! Grab your friends, meet new ones and have fun while getting a full body work out! Pickleball is a low impact workout that blends tennis, badminton and ping-pong and can be played one-on-one or groups of 4. It builds heart health, muscle, burns calories and sharpens those reflexes! Not to mention pickleballers always leave in a great mood after playing. We have designated pickleball courts at Round Lake and Riverside Parks!

PD Food/Personal Hygiene Drive The Oviedo Police Department is hosting a food and personal hygiene drive to benefit Hope Helps, Inc. starting July 13, 2026. The Department is collecting food and personal hygiene items in the Police Department lobby starting Monday, July 13 through July 25 at 300 Alexandria Blvd. Anyone can bring items to help families. Hope Helps Inc, located in Oviedo, has a mission to prevent and reduce hunger and homelessness in Central Florida by equipping individuals and families to become self-sufficient through Housing, Outreach, Prevention, and Education. Food items needed: (non-perishables only) Cereal, Cold or Hot Canned Fruits Canned/Dry Beans Chunky Style Soups Canned Proteins/Meats Cooking Oil Oatmeal/breakfast dry foods Spaghetti Sauce Nutritional Supplement Drinks Zip Top Bags Quart/Gallon Citizens can also bring personal items such as toothpaste/toothbrush, mouthwash, soap, etc... The lobby doors are open during regular business hours. There is a bell to ring after hours/weekends for dropoff.

Welcome New Firefighters! The Oviedo Fire Department welcomes new firefighters to the team! Kyla Mullens, Jesse Mejia, Clayton Pressley and Raymond Cortes-Castillo, are finishing up their orientation process before being assigned to their shifts following the ceremony, which will be held on July 17 at City Hall. All three spent time working with Battalion Chiefs, Engineers, Paramedics, Lieutenants, and trainers on hose lines, hydrant work, EMS scenarios, ATV/trails, rapid rescue, search and rescue, ladders, forcible entry, extrication, live fire scenarios, and Tower Truck/Aerial operations.
