At the Monday, July 20th City Council Meeting, Councilmembers presented a ceremonial check to the American Cancer Society and Helpful Hands, Inc. for the donation of funds raised during the Relay for Life & Helpful HandsAnnual GolfTournament held on February 13, 2026.The City also took time to express appreciation for Waste Pro of Florida, Inc , who was the title sponsor for their generous contribution to the Relay for Life & Helpful Hands GolfTournament.
In total, $11,000 was raised for Helpful Hands, Inc. and $22,000 was raised for theAmerican Cancer Society.
The City of Oviedo PublicArts Board are looking for artists who are interested in displaying their artwork at City Hall!
Art in the Chambers is a program that began in 2024 and features artists works on the walls of the City Council Chambers.The display is quarterly (sometimes longer) and is open to the public during working hours. Pieces can be sold with 25% of the proceeds going to the PublicArt Board.
The City is looking for Central Florida or Oviedo artists who are looking to display their work!

Candidate election packets are available for pick-up beginning in March at the City Clerk’s Office We encourage prospective candidates to review materials early and plan ahead for the qualifying period.

As part of Seminole County Public Schools’continued commitment to school safety and campus security, Oviedo High School will implement safety enhancements ahead of the 2026-2027 school year that you will need to be aware of.The gate on King Street will be closed during the instructional day from 7:40 am – 2:00 pm and from 7:40 am – 1:00 pm on early-release Wednesdays, beginning in the 2026-2027 school year This change helps to better manage campus access and reinforce perimeter security during school hours. Students, families, and visitors will continue to access the campus through the main campus entrance located on Pine Street.These updates are designed to strengthen campus access procedures, improve visitor management, and support a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Additional information regarding traffic flow, visitor access, and campus procedures will be shared with families and the community prior to the start of the school year

The City is pleased to announce a bid for the West Mitchell Hammock Road Corridor Safety Improvements has been approved by City Council, paving the way to insuring mobility needs for both drivers and pedestrians.
The West Mitchell Hammock Road Corridor Safety Improvement Project was initiated in 2018 to assess access management and the mobility needs along Mitchell Hammock Road from State Road (SR) 426 (Aloma Avenue) to Oviedo Boulevard.
During the conceptual design process, the City worked with Metroplan Orlando to develop a Vision Zero Action Plan that was formally approved by City Council on September 16, 2024, with the adoption of Resolution No. 4504-24. In the Vision Zero Action Plan, the portion of West Mitchell Hammock Road extending from just east of State Road (SR) 426 to SR 434 is identified as one of two City roads on the High Injury Network (HIN) which is a collection of roads where a disproportionate number of traffic deaths and serious injuries occur. In addition, it was ranked as the highest priority City road project in the Vision Zero Action Plan. To address the safety concerns for both pedestrians and motorists, the Vision Zero Action Plan recommended the following improvements: access management, a raised median, and a new sidewalk along the north side of the roadway. These improvements are incorporated into the West Mitchell Hammock Road Corridor Safety Improvements Project final construction plans. In addition, the recommendations also include segment lighting which is included in a separate project.
Specific improvements for the Project are as follows:
• Overall widening of West Mitchell Hammock Road approximately five (5) feet along the north side to accommodate a sixteen-foot (16 ft.) wide raised (sodded) median and an eight-foot (8 ft.) wide asphalt sidewalk
• Milling and resurfacing of the roadway (both sides)
• Drainage improvements including regrading of the on-site dry retention pond (swale), the addition of flume inlets, and the extension of the existing double seventy-two-inch (72”) reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) cross drain to the north
• Minor utility work, including the relocation of a fire hydrant, access management improvements including median access
• Signage and pavement improvements
The West Mitchell Hammock Road Corridor Safety Project was included on the City’s Third Generation Sales Tax project list. Sufficient funding exists in the FY 2025-26 Budget in Fund 304 (Third Generation Sales Tax) for the project.
The City will provide more information before the construction begins.

Door Alarms Door Alarms
The Oviedo Fire Department has door and window alarms available to give away, courtesy of the Wesley Seth Foundation.
As kids get out of school and spend more time at home or areas near water, we want to make sure caregivers are aware of the program to keep kids safe!

The Oviedo Fire Department welcomes new firefighters to the team!
Kyla Mullens, Jesse Mejia, Clayton Pressley and Raymond Cortes-Castillo, are finishing up their orientation process before being assigned to their shifts following the ceremony, which was held on July 17 at City Hall.
All three spent time working with Battalion Chiefs, Engineers, Paramedics, Lieutenants, and trainers on hose lines, hydrant work, EMS scenarios,ATV/trails, rapid rescue, search and rescue, ladders, forcible entry, extrication, live fire scenarios, andTowerTruck/Aerial operations.
Raymond Cortes-Castillo was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where he earned a nursing degree before serving for 2 years with the Puerto Rico Fire Department.After Hurricane Maria, he relocated to Florida and attended Seminole State College for his EMTCertification. His biggest challenge was pursuing a career in a different language, but he worked hard to learn and adapt, making him more resilient and grateful. Cortes-Castillo was pinned by his fiancée.
Jesse Mejia grew up in Modesto, California.As a military child, he had the opportunity to live and travel throughout much of the United States, and those experiences helped shape my adaptability and strong work ethic.After high school, he studied Biomedical Engineering at Southern New Hampshire University. He also spent two years in Hawaii as a merchant mariner, gaining valuable experience serving others. It was during that time that he discovered firefighting as a volunteer and knew it was the career he wanted. Upon returning, he earned his fire certifications at Hillsborough Community College. Mejia was pinned by his fiancée.
Kyla Mullens was born and raised in Oviedo and graduated from Hagerty High School. She went to college in Georgia for two years on a volleyball scholarship and she came to love firefighting after doing clinicals at EMTschool. She strives to make someone’s day better and has discovered a passion for firefighting. Mullen was pinned by her mother.
Clayton Pressley grew up in South Carolina, but his family moved to Oviedo when he was 10 years old. Pressley graduated from Oviedo High School in 2024 and wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. He dreamed of becoming a firefighter and looks forward to facing challenges while helping the Oviedo community. Pressley was pinned by his father.
Along with family, our new firefighters were joined by City Councilmembers, Manager Bryan Cobb, Fire Command Staff, fellow firefighters, Police Department Command staff and city staff.

From July 13, 2026, through July 25, 2026, Ofc. Varkony-Selmer organized and conducted a Food and Hygiene Drive in support of the food pantry at Hope Helps, located at 812 Eyrie Dr., Oviedo, FL32765. Through the generosity of the community, approximately $1,000 worth of food and hygiene items was collected to assist City of Oviedo families in need.
This initiative was self-started by Ofc. Varkony-Selmer, who coordinated directly with Hope Helps after learning that food supplies typically diminish during the summer months. Recognizing a need within the community, she took the initiative to organize this effort while furthering the Police Department's mission of strengthening community partnerships and fostering positive relationships.
While the Police Department has many opportunities to engage with the public, it is officers like Ofc. Varkony-Selmer whose initiative and dedication create lasting impacts. Her willingness to go above and beyond helps build trust, strengthens relationships, and positively shapes the public's perception of law enforcement through consistent, professional service.
In addition to organizing the drive, Ofc. Varkony-Selmer volunteered her personal time on July 28, 2026, to deliver the donated items to Hope Helps, ensuring families received support as they prepared for the upcoming school year
