Protect the terminal on all Lithium ion (Li-ion), Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), and Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA) batteries.
Protect the terminal:
Properly securing battery terminals before recycling is essential to prevent sparks and fires.

Place each battery in a clear plastic bag:
• Zip seal bags
• Produce bags
• Bubble bags
• Newspaper bags
Tape the positive(+) terminal with nonconductive tape
• Clear packing tape
• Electrical tape
• Duct tape
Batteries are considered a hazardous household waste and are accepted at St. Charles County Recycle Works locations May-September.
Batteries can also be recycled at local Call2Recycle drop-off locations.
Properly recycling batteries is essential for protecting both our community and our environment. Batteries should never be placed in your household trash or curbside recycling cart. Technology has made it easier than ever to stay connected, but it has also given scammers a powerful new tool: artificial intelligence (AI). Being aware of these red flags and tips could help keep you from falling victim to one of these scams.
AI comes in many different formats, and can be used for a variety of purposes. Predictive AI can be used in essential services like fraud protection and closed captioning; it’s even being tested in early cancer detection, and cognitive function evaluations. The type of AI being used on social media is called Generative AI. This technology can create visuals for nearly anything you can imagine; but a tool this powerful can become dangerous.

One of the most common AI swindles is an imposter scam. These schemes have gotten more sophisticated with developments in generative AI, and get smarter every day. Scammers can use clips of a person speaking (often found on social media) to create a voice clone. Then, they spoof phone numbers to make it look like you are getting a call from a loved one, when its really a scammer on the other end.
Each time a photo or video is fed to AI, it’s being used to train the system. With millions of people feeding the system, it’s gotten sharper, and more accurate. Making it a goldmine for scammers. While AI videos and pictures may seem like harmless fun, they represent a seismic shift in our ability to trust our own eyes.
It’s important to stay vigilant, and be aware of common scam tactics, and the seemingly limitless capabilities of this technology. If you suspect you’re in a scam situation, feel free to contact law enforcement before taking any action. Make sure to also report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission help line at www.ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
AI can be used to generate fake photos or videos of loved ones in distress, or faux personas for romance scams. AI that mimics someone’s likeness are often referred to as “deepfakes.” Even live video chats can be deepfaked. This tech can make anyone look and sound like a grandchild, or your even a famous actor. These scams are counting on you to act out of emotion. This technology is easily accessible and very common. Being aware is your best defense. They may look and sound real, but in reality; no one is in danger, and your “sweetheart” is only after your hard earned money.
A great way to protect yourself is to establish a secret family code-word. If a relative calls claiming to be in trouble or danger, ask for the secret word. If they can’t provide it, hang up—no matter how much it sounds like them.
Many scams are built around a common formula: create a problem, apply pressure, and get paid. Urgency is the biggest red flag to know you’re being scammed. Slow down before taking action. Reflect on the request. Urgency and emotional responses are key to a successful scam. Know that you have rights and legal protections; and specific forms of payment are harder to get back, such as wire transfers, giftcards, or cryptocurrency. If they’re claiming to be a loved one, verify that person’s whereabouts. If there’s photos or videos, check if they have too many fingers, and look for writing that looks like nonsense. For a video call, ask them to turn their head to the side; deepfakes can glitch at an angle. In the case of a phone call, listen for a lack of breathing or “metallic” clipping at the end of words.
Artificial intelligence can be a great tool, but it’s crucial to know what to look out for, and how to identify AI schemes. This artcle was written in collaboration with O’Fallon’s Communications, Information Technology, and Police Departments.

Activity codes are used to identify a course for the purpose of registration. For online registration, you can use the activity code to search for specific classes. To the right, you’ll see an example of a course description with the activity code circled.
Location codes are used to denote the location of a program or event. On the right, you’ll find a table of all possible program locations, and their location codes.
Program registration must be done online at www.ofallonmo.gov/parks. In the top menu, select “REGISTER ONLINE”; this will take you to O’Fallon’s RecTrac website.
Once in RecTrac, click the “SEARCH” button, then click “Search All Activities” and type in the activity code found at the end of each course description. (For example: #220327)
All classes have a minimum and maximum enrollment. To keep classes from being canceled due to low registration, please register at least six days in advance of the start date. Once a class is canceled, it will not be rescheduled.
For example, if a class begins on a Monday, you must register no later than Tuesday of the previous week. Please note that some programs, including trips, camps, and sports leagues, have earlier deadlines, so please be sure to check the program descriptions.
While the City provides full refunds for canceled classes, please note that for most programs no refunds are issued for missed lessons or late customer-initiated cancellations. For a complete breakdown of fees, timelines and account credits, please visit renaudcenter.com/refunds, or scan the QR code to view our full policy.
This is an example of a class description found in this program guide. The activity code for the class will always be found at the end of the class description; in bold font and color coded. The information below the line includes the day, time, date, location, and price of the class or activity. #220327

To ensure success in the O’Fallon Swim Academy, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed, moving to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely, not quickly. Children learn at different paces and it is common to repeat a class.
Parent or guardian participation in the water with the child is required. Children will enjoy learning basics of water safety and participating in a swim class. Parents/ guardians will learn how to safely guide their child and help them advance at their own pace. Min/Max: 3/10.
This transitional class is for children who have passed Starfish but are not yet ready to be away from mom or dad just yet. Swimmers gain confidence and independence as they master introductory skills and learn safe practices. Parents/ guardians will participate in the water during the first 2-4 classes. Min/Max: 3/8.
Prerequisites: At least 2 years old or completion of Starfish. Swimmers who successfully complete Pufferfish can: swim/ bob underwater with assistance, following directions, swim independently of parent/ guardian, and jump in without assistance.
CHILDREN MUST PASS THE PREVIOUS SWIM LEVEL, OR BE ABLE TO COMPLETE TASKS FROM PREVIOUS LEVEL TO MOVE UP.
The Turtle class is for beginners. Activities may seem repetitive, but students will gain confidence as they master basic introductory swimming and water safety skills. Min/Max: 3/6.
Swimmers who successfully complete the Turtle level can: jump in, bob, self-propel 5 feet, and swim underwater comfortably without assistance, know safety practices, and can retrieve an object from chest-deep water with assistance.
The Seahorse class continues to build your child’s independence and confidence in the water to prepare them for Level 1: Jellyfish. Min/Max: 3/6.
Swimmers who successfully complete the Seahorse level can: float on their front and back, retrieve a chest deep object, jump in, and self-propel 10 feet without assistance, and blow bubbles out of their nose.
This level builds on basic swimming skills, reinforces independent swimming, and introduces the freestyle and backstroke. Min/Max: 3/6.
Swimmers who successfully complete Jellyfish can: swim 8 feet of freestyle, slide on front, and self-propel 15 feet without assistance, and retrieve an object from bottom of the pool with assistance.
INTERESTED IN JOINING OUR SWIM TEAM? SEE MORE ON PAGE 31!
Sea Lion emphasizes freestyle and backstroke skills while continuing to build endurance and independent swimming skills. Min/Max: 3/6.
