Each April, SciStarter's Citizen Science Month celebrates the people, projects, and scientific outcomes made possible through public participation in scientific research. In 2026, SciStarter is working toward a shared goal of 2.50 Million Acts of Science, marking America’s 250th anniversary through collective discovery, service, and impact.

This NASA-supported research project tracks changes in wildlife distributions and abundances over time—critical data that informs wildlife management and conservation decisions.

CITIZEN SCIENCE: TRANSCRIPTION MISSION

Research and transcribe the historical Freedmen's Bureau Papers with others, in real time. Smithsonian experts will kick things off by explaining the research, goals, and historical importance of the Freedmen’s Bureau records. You’ll receive step-by-step instructions, then be guided to an easyto-use website to transcribe handwritten documents into searchable text. Your work will help preserve and unlock records documenting the lives of formerly enslaved individuals during Reconstruction. Please bring your smart phone, laptop, or tablet. A limited number of laptops will be provided.

Get fitted for a free bike helmet (while supplies last) and learn safe cycling tips from Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Then, practice your new skills on our bicycle “rodeo” course. Bikes and scooters are provided for kids ages 11 and under to use during the program, but you’re welcome to bring your own.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $67,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers will provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Preparers are provided to the library by Mesa United Way. Appointments are available between 10am and 12pm. To schedule an appointment, please visit PrepareAndEmpower.org/appointment. If you need assistance booking an appointment online, please call VITA at 480-834-2122 and an agent will assist you. No walk-in appointments will be available between 10am and 12pm. You must schedule an appointment to be seen in this timeframe. Walk-in services will be available between 12pm and 2:30pm. Clients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis during walk-ins.
