It's spring cleaning season! As the weather begins to warm up, the overwhelming urge to start spring cleaning might be hitting your home. But have no fear -- the City of Independence is ready to help you get rid of all that junk you might have laying around. On Saturday, April 13, the Drop-Off Depot will open for the first time this season. The Depot is open from 8 AM-3 PM the second Saturday of each month between April and October. It's located at 875 Vista Ave (one mile east of M-291 on Truman Road, north of Vista Avenue). The Depot is open to Independence residents only -- a valid driver's license or recent utility bill is required for entry. Items accepted include: Furniture, mattresses & box springs, carpet, plumbing fixtures, sheetrock, windows, shingles, fencing, landscape timbers, bricks, paving stones, limbs, firewood, bushes, stumps, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, hot water heaters, washers, dryers, lawnmowers and car, boat, lawnmower and batteries. No bagged leaves, grass, or yard waste is accepted. Prices are based on the type of vehicle used, not the contents of the load (except tires and appliances). Mark your calendars for the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, May 4th. The 27th annual event will take place from 9 AM-1 PM in the large parking lot bordered by Walnut, Liberty, Kansas and Osage St. It's free for Independence resident, however a driver's license or recent utility bill is required to verify residency. Items accepted include: Batteries, paint and paint products (including aerosol cans), varnish, stripper, turpentine, fluorescent light bulbs, garden and yard
