This spring and summer, our Parks & Recreation team is bringing you a season packed with opportunities to explore, play, learn, and connect. From arts and culture to outdoor adventures, there’s something here for everyone and every age!

Active Agers programs are designed for people who want to stay moving, keep their minds sharp, and connect with new friends along the way. From fitness and wellness to social and lifelong learning opportunities, this is your time to have fun, try new things, and live life to the fullest!

Daily Lunch | 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

This program is subsidized by the Mid-America Regional Council grant. Donations are welcome to support those who are unable to purchase lunch. There is a $7 charge for individuals who are under the age of 60 and do not have a disability. The lunch menu can be found online at independencemo.gov, under the Parks and Recreation Page.

Aging Mastery Program

Created by the National Council on Aging, this program offers a comprehensive and fun approach to living that celebrates the gift of longevity. This 10-week program uses goal-setting, daily practices, professional speakers, peer support and incentives to help you create your own playbook for aging. Core Curriculum:

Ready for more pickleball? The Palmer Center offers pickleball court reservations to anyone over the age of 18 on Saturdays. The cost is $25 per court, per hour. To reserve your court space, contact the Palmer Center at (816)325-6200. Reservations need to be made by the Wednesday before. Nets are provided. Players need to bring their own paddles and balls.

Our Palmer Day Trips are a fan favorite as we explore fun and exciting places around the KC Metro and beyond! All of the day trips below are for those ages 60+. To add your name to the list, call the Palmer Center at (816) 325-6200.

Wamego, KS Trip

Thursday, April 16 | 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Cost: $89 | Registration due by March 30

Take a trip down the yellow brick road with a visit to the Oz Museum! The trip includes lunch at the Friendship House, the Wamego Historical Museum, and Dutch Mill to learn about the city's Dutch heritage.

Steamboat and Trains Trip

Thursday, May 14 | 9:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Cost: $69 | Registration due by April 13

Visit the Steamboat Arabia Museum to hear about its fascinating story and see thousands of artifacts. Enjoy time at the River Market for lunch and shopping, followed by a guided tour of Union Station.

Pioneer Trails

Tuesday, June 30 | 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Cost: $25 | Registration due by June 15 (Registration opens on May 13)

The Independence Square is full of rich history and public art. Take a 45-minute guided walking tour that explores some of the art and learn how it represents both past and present times. Step back in time on a wagon tour passing historic sites. In the afternoon, visit the National Frontier Trails Museum.

Route 66 Trip

Thursday, July 16 | 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Cost: $124 | Registration due by June 15 (Registration opens May 13)

Take a trip down Route 66 between Carthage, MO and Springfield, MO. See some of the classic stops such as Boots Court Motel and Gary's Gay Parita. Enjoy lunch at Hanger Kafe. Visit the History Museum on the Square in Springfield, the birthplace of Route 66, and stop by Osceola Cheese on the way home.

Coffee & Cash Trip

Wednesday, August 19 | 8:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

Cost: $49 | Registration due by July 17 (Registration opens May 13)

Visit the Roasterie for a tour, learn about their brewing process, and enjoy a sample. Visit Crown Center to shop and enjoy lunch on your own. The final destination is the Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank.

Butterfly Trail: Paved (0.28 miles). Limestone and woodland landscapes. Easy accessibility, wheelchair and stroller friendly. Perfect path for beginners!

Butterfly Trail: Unpaved (0.87 miles). Vernal pond and wetland landscapes. Perfect spot to see frogs and wetland animals. Another great spot for beginner hikers.

Chonkeh Trail: Unpaved (0.30 miles). Oak-hickory forest, lakes, and wetland. Farthest trail from the parking lot, so bring your water and sturdy shoes.

Hollow Stump Trail: Unpaved (0.35 miles). Oak-hickory forest, lakes, and wetland. Solitary benches to sit and view lakes, waterfowl, and aquatic wildlife in a peaceful setting.

Paw Paw Trail: Unpaved (0.56 miles). Woodland and habitat restoration landscapes. Good trail to try your walking sticks. It's named after the edible fruit. See if you can spot any pawpaw trees!

Wapiti Trail: Unpaved (0.33 miles). Bethany Falls limestone formations. Wapiti is a Shawnee Indian word for elk, translating to white rump or white deer. Can you spot signs of deer along the trail? Most challenging trail!

The spray grounds will close when there is inclement weather.

When reserving an outdoor facility, please follow all park rules and regulations including:

• No fireworks, firearms, alcoholic beverages, vaping or marijuana on park property.

• Bands, DJ's, amusement-style rides, and booths are prohibited unless given approval through the Special Event application.

• Prevent damage to grass areas by keeping vehicles on designated roadways and parking lots.

• For the safety of your group, all fires must be confined to on-site picnic grills.

• Any decorations and signs must be removed at the conclusion of your reservation period.

• Inflatables, including bounce houses, are not allowed in the parks.
