SB 1087 Hearing for Failure to appear - this is something the City Municipal Courts have been having issues with. Need to attend

How did the travel apply to the job?

I handle legislative affairs for the City of Independence. I testified on behalf of the City of Independence on SB 1087 (Failure to Appear) in front of the Missouri Senate Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety Committee. This legislation is a public safety measure that the City of Independence has worked on for several years.

In addition, I met with House Speaker Jon Patterson, Representatives Crossley, Hinman, Jobe, Steinmeyer, Strickler & Vernetti and Senators Gregory, Henderson, Nicola and Washington to discuss several issues. These issues included Failure to Appear, obtaining funding for the ARCH program, overtime funding for first responders during the World Cup, the Film Tax Credit, the Revitalizing Missouri Downtowns and Main Streets Act and the Historic Preservation Tax Credit. We also discussed potential assessment legislation.

How did training add value to the city?

The purpose of this trip was to improve public safety in Independence and to advocate for funding that will assist in Economic Development. Legislators were receptive to assisting us with many of these issues. A copy of the City Council adopted 2026 State Legislative Agenda was also shared with each office that was visited.

General comments:

We have a state legislative delegation that works well together and is very receptive. The opportunity to meet with the Local Government Committee Chairs in the House and Senate was helpful as their committees hear many bills that may impact the City of Independence.
