Over 50’s Geraldton Life
Our Over 50’s Geraldton Life Facebook page has grown rapidly, increasing from 2,000 members to over 3,500 in February. This incredible growth shows just how strongly our community supports the work we do and how widely the word is spreading about what a great centre we have.
The QEII Seniors & Community Centre is provided by the City of Greater Geraldton and funded by the State Government through the Department of Communities
A crisp and cool donation
A big thank you to the Geraldton Seniors Week Committee for their wonderful generosity and donation of a $197 Tefal Air Fryer and a $1,140 Westinghouse 503 litre fridge for the Centre’s main kitchen.
These new additions are already making the kitchen feel a bit flash! This contribution was made possible thanks to all the seniors who supported the 2025 Seniors Week Raffle. Your involvement truly helps us keep the Centre running smoothly (and now, more crisply and coolly than ever!).
Thank you for your kindness, support, and community spirit.

RECIPES FRM THE HEART
with Janet Darch
Many years ago, Janet’s mother gifted her a copy of a 2014 CWA of WA” Ultimate Scone Cookbook. Janet assured us the scone recipe below may sound a bit weird with salmon but it is delicious. Give it a go and let us know what you think.
Here’s some tips for great scones:
Work quickly, handle as little as possible after adding moisture. Use a knife to mix the ingredients with a cutting action, preheat oven to 220 degrees celsius & place scones close together on the tray for better rising.
Savoury Salmon Scones
1 tsp sugar
210g pink salmon drained and bones removed
½ tsp mustard
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp dried mixed herbs
2 cups SR flour
¼ tsp salt & pepper
45g butter
2 tsps. vinegar
2 tsps. grated tasty cheese
2 tsps. chopped onion
Approx. ¾ cup milk, Extra milk to glaze
Sift ingredients, rub butter into flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. In another bowl break the salmon up with a fork and sprinkle with vinegar. Quickly mix in grated cheese, onion and salmon, then sufficient milk into the flour mixture to make a soft dough. Place mixture on a floured board and cut into rounds. Place on a greased tray. Brush with milk and bake in a hot oven 200c for 15 minutes until golden brown.
Snippets of My Life
With Val Keys
Child of the 40s at school in England
My earliest memory of school began at Nursery School in 1945. The war was still on, and our mum had 5 children. My youngster sister was a baby, so I was sent to Nursery (like our kindergarten) I remember warm milk in a bottle and my plimsolls (sandshoes)in a bag hanging on a hook, with others outside the classroom. I was born in June 1941 and was about 3 ½ years.
I remember in our house was a pink satin cushion underneath our lounge table; my eldest sister told me this was a safe shelter- if bombs were dropped. We lived in southeast London, where lots of bombs were dropped. Fortunately, I was too young to remember those 1939-1945 War years.
We had ration books for food that was in short supply. There were 7 in our family and as I got older around 10 or 11 years of age, I remember us eating very well and we were lucky I believe.
Our mum didn’t work outside the home; she looked after us all. Our dad worked hard, long hours in Fleet Street, London at the newspaper offices until he was 65. He started there as a teenager sweeping floors and ended up printing newspapers. A well-paid job. I recollect those were very happy years.
Note: Val has been a valued volunteer at the QEII centre for many years and recently retired from organising the Rummikub Group.

Hello everyone, we take it that we are all settled into the new year now and enjoying the wide variety of classes on offer here at the QE11 Senior Centre.
Our beginners class started on the 5th of February, and we welcomed our new students to the world of technology. We addressed the fundamentals of our smart phones together with aspects of security and privacy. Each of these topics were shown on video together with itemised notes which all the students received.
We shall be moving on to “All about photos” during March, which we find interests us all, from how to take a photograph correctly, digitalise old photos to editing photos by removing those blemishes and red eye etc. Moving on to creating Albums, folders and organising our photographs, enabling us to find exactly what we are looking for. This topic is always fun and enjoyed by most.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
It is extremely important we all update our software on our devices. Failing to do so will result in our devices not working properly and may affect our safety online. So, when you receive a notification that says Software Update, please do it as soon as you can. If you don’t know how to do this, we are happy to help. Just give us a call.
During February, the Continuing Class presented topics on passwords and ‘pass keys’, and the students were also interested in knowing more about video calls. For the month of March, we shall be open to suggestions from the students as to their topics of interest, together with security and ongoing privacy features

Pensioners Social Club
Hello to all our members. Hope you are enjoying the February weather. Will it rain this month? Slim odds.
Did you know an average woman lives 15 years longer than men? I’m pretty sure it’s because they look after themselves better than us mere males. They go to a doctor more often and more socially connected in the community which means better mental health and longer life.
President Val Brown opened the meeting the 4 February meeting at 10:30am and welcomed 33 members including Anne Doney who joined the club on the day. Welcome Anne –we hope you enjoyed our fabulous lunch and the club.
The previous meeting Minutes were read by Secretary Lina Mittoni and passed. Lucky door prize was won by Shirley Edwards. Treasurer Wendy White presented the financial report. All going well!
