Education Tax Increase and Overall Property Tax Impact The City of Grande Prairie would like to inform you of changes to your 2026 property tax bill. While City Council approved a 4.34% increase to the municipal portion of your taxes, the overall amount on your bill may be higher. This is largely due to a 6.7% increase in the education property tax, which is set by the Province of Alberta—not the City—and is mandated for collection by municipalities on the Province’s behalf. This Provincial increase makes up 40% of the 2026 increase, with $35M of total property taxes being sent to the Province of Alberta.

In 2026, the Alberta Government increased its portion of property tax
What This Means for You For the average property owner, the total tax increase will be higher than 4.34% because the education tax makes up a substantial portion of your bill. This provincial increase is added on top of the City’s municipal rate.
