How is the City Budget Determined?

The proposed budget is based on City Council’s Strategic Priorities. The following steps outline the City’s budget process:

JANUARY – APRIL

■ City administration reviews existing City programs and services to find cost or delivery efficiencies and propose alternatives.

MAY – JULY

■ Operating departments collaborate with Finance to review and draft proposed budgets.

AUGUST – OCTOBER

■ Senior Management reviews the proposed budget through the lens of Councils Strategic Plan and adjusts in coordination with department Directors to develop scenarios and alternatives for Council to deliberate.

SEPTEMBER

■ Public engagement launches to collect feedback from residents on their budget priorities.

NOVEMBER

■ Proposed budget and public engagement results presented to Council for deliberation.

This tax breakdown is approximate and all information is subject to change. *The education portion of property tax provides Alberta's education system with a stable and sustainable source of revenue. The tax supports all public and separate school students and helps pay for basic instruction costs, including teacher salaries, textbooks and other classroom resources. The City of Grande Prairie collects the education property tax on behalf of the Province of Alberta.
