Civic engagement is one of the most powerful ways to shape the city’s future. This issue celebrates civic pride and the many ways residents help shape our community. Discover how your voice and participation
ENCOUNTERING DESERT WILDLIFE
As our city grows, encounters with desert wildlife like rattlesnakes and scorpions can become more common, making awareness and prevention essential for staying safe.
Stay alert outdoors: wear closed-toe shoes, avoid reaching into unseen areas and use a flashlight at night when critters are most active.
Give wildlife space: if you encounter a snake or scorpion, remain calm and slowly back away; never attempt to handle or remove it.
Protect your home: shake out shoes and clothing, reduce yard clutter and seal cracks or gaps where animals can enter.
Know what to do: if bitten or stung, stay calm, limit movement and seek help right away. Call 9-1-1 for emergencies or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

help keep our city strong and connected. Through voting, attending meetings, sharing ideas and staying informed, every resident has the ability to make their voice heard.

SMALL ACT WITH A BIG IMPACT
In Goodyear, recycling is more powerful than it looks. That aluminum can in your green bin can be back on store shelves in as little as 60 days! Recycling paper also saves trees and water. Even plastic bottles get a second life, transformed into clothing, carpet and park benches.
Small habits can make a big difference. Not sure what you can recycle? Visit goodyearaz.gov/Recycle and type your item into the Recycle Right Wizard search bar.

PLANNING FOR GOODYEAR’S WATER FUTURE
Through thoughtful planning, strong partnerships, conservation efforts and strategic investments, the city is prepared to support a vibrant and growing community.

Goodyear has a 100-year assured water supply and a carefully managed mix of water sources to ensure reliable service for residents, businesses and future neighborhoods. Every new development is also assigned a water allocation, helping the city grow responsibly and making sure everyone has what they need now and for generations to come.

FROM THE MAYOR
When I moved to Goodyear in 2002, I quickly realized this is a special place. I was drawn here by how friendly everyone is and how much people genuinely care about one another. That sense of connection is what inspired me to serve on the city council. I wanted to help ensure Goodyear remains a place where families can live, grow and thrive for generations to come.
Civic engagement is at the heart of what makes our community so strong. It’s more than staying informed; it’s about being involved, showing up and contributing in ways both big and small. Every time a resident attends a meeting, volunteers their time or shares their

perspective, they help shape the future of our city.
Our community spirit is what truly sets Goodyear apart. We see it every day in the dedication of our residents. From students serving on the Youth Commission to volunteers supporting neighbors through organizations like the Southwest Lending Closet, our city runs on compassion and generosity. Whether you’re lending a hand at the ballpark or participating in efforts like Make a Difference Day, your contributions make a meaningful impact and strengthen the fabric of our community.
If you’re looking to get more involved, there are many opportunities to do so. I encourage residents to explore the LEAD Program, which offers a behindthe-scenes look at how our city operates. Think of it as a “Government 101” experience. You can also apply to serve on one of our boards or commissions, where your voice and ideas directly influence important decisions.
Goodyear’s continued success depends on the involvement of its residents.

GOODYEAR CITY COUNCIL

By staying engaged, we not only help guide the direction of our city, but we also preserve the welcoming, supportive spirit that brought so many of us here in the first place. Together, we can ensure that Goodyear remains a community where we can live, work and raise a family.

COUNCIL CORNER

BRANNON HAMPTON VICE MAYOR WALLY CAMPBELL
COUNCILMEMBER

Strong communities are built by people who choose to get involved and make a difference. Whether you’re attending school board meetings, serving on a board or commission, participating in your HOA or giving back through volunteerism, your efforts matter. If you’re ready to lead, consider stepping into roles through LEAD, citizens committees or even running for city council. Your voice is vital because real, lasting change starts with engaged residents who care enough to act.
To me, civic pride means rolling up your sleeves and being part of something bigger than yourself. Volunteering is the heart of Goodyear and what sets our community apart. When I moved here in 2000, volunteering helped me find my place. It connected me with neighbors, built lasting friendships and gave me the chance to give back. Civic engagement means being a voice for our neighborhoods and businesses while strengthening the connection between residents and city government.
Safe, clean and full of things to do—those are just a few words residents use to describe Goodyear. As we grow, it’s been wonderful to welcome new neighbors who choose our amenities and stay for the small-town feel. That spirit of community doesn’t happen by accident; it’s built when people show up, share ideas, volunteer, and participate. As your councilmember, I’m committed to expanding opportunities for civic engagement so your voice can help shape our future. Together, we’re growing with intention— creating a city that works for families, retirees and young people, now and for generations to come.
What Does Civic Engagement or Civic Pride Mean to You?

Civic pride is more than appreciation for where we live; it’s a commitment to shaping the future. That starts with engaged residents who hold their leaders accountable and take an active role in community conversations. When people stay involved and invested, it creates a stronger, more responsive city for everyone. I always say, “help us help you,” because the best outcomes happen when we move forward together as partners in Goodyear’s success.
For over three decades, my professional life has been defined by a single guiding principle and one of Air Force’s core values: “SERVICE BEFORE SELF.” From serving 30 years in the military to my roles with two city governments and now city council, I have viewed civic engagement not as a series of jobs, but as a continuous mission to strengthen the fabric of our communities. My journey has taught me that whether you wear a uniform or a city badge, the goal remains the same: to leave your community more resilient, more unified and better prepared for the future than you found it.
Goodyear is a great city because its residents stay involved. I graduated from Millennium High School, served overseas in the Army, and came back here because this is home. To me, civic engagement means showing up. Attending a meeting, serving on a board, volunteering or just voting all add up. Strong communities are built on purpose. There are real ways to get engaged here, from neighborhood associations to city commissions, and anyone who cares about where they live has something to contribute. That is what keeps Goodyear moving in the right direction.

GUIDING GOODYEAR ONE DECISION AT A TIME
What does a city council do? Simply put, it’s the group responsible for making decisions that keep the city running smoothly and moving forward. From adopting the budget and setting local policies to overseeing essential services like public safety, infrastructure and parks, the council helps guide the community’s shared vision for the city and thoughtfully plan for the future.
A city’s vision is shaped by the people who call it home. In Goodyear, through community meetings, surveys,
conversations and everyday interactions, residents share what matters most. That input helps define priorities and set the direction for the future.
Community input is essential. Residents are encouraged to stay involved, attend meetings and keep up with city initiatives. You can also reach out directly by emailing council@ goodyearaz.gov to share your thoughts, ask questions or provide input. Residents are also encouraged to attend city council meetings in person or watch online.
GET INVOLVED: SERVE ON A BOARD, COMMISSION OR COMMITTEE

Members of the city’s various boards, commissions and committees work alongside other residents to make Goodyear a better place to be. There are a variety of groups that you can be involved in based on your interests and availability. The members make recommendations to council on a wide range of topics, including projects and policy related to arts and culture, planning and zoning, parks and recreation and much more. It’s a great way to share your perspective, learn more about how the city operates and play an active role in shaping Goodyear’s future.
The Goodyear City Council helps shape the future of the city through decisions on policies, services and community priorities.

TOMORROW’S LEADERS, HARD AT WORK TODAY
The future leaders of Goodyear are already hard at work today, and one way that’s happening is through the city’s Youth Commission.
The city leadership program takes place during the school year and is made up of dedicated local high school students. They learn how the city operates and develop leadership skills through community involvement. The commissioners volunteer at city events and various service projects throughout the year and provide the city council with feedback on youth-related issues that are important to them.
They also represent the city at state and national conferences. Recently, members of the youth commission returned from the National League of
Cities (NLC) conference in Washington, D.C., where they met with peers from across the country and learned more about leadership, civic responsibility and how local government works on a national level.

Youth Commissioners
“It was incredible! Never before had I felt more proud to represent my city. Being surrounded by passionate youth and dedicated leaders who pour their energy, creativity and belief into their communities was genuinely electrifying. Experiences like that remind me why being part of the Goodyear Youth Commission matters so deeply to me. Every time I serve, I have the chance to spark that same sense of passion and purpose in someone else.”
Youth Commissioner Kiley Colvin on attending the NLC Conference

DECADES OF DEDICATION: A TRUE COMMUNITY PILLAR
For decades, Jay Mathias has found meaningful ways to serve the community he calls home.
A longtime resident of Goodyear, Mathias has stayed actively involved through volunteer work and civic leadership. His commitment to service stretches back to the late 1980s when he volunteered as a firefighter for the city.
“People often ask why I do it” said Mathias about serving as a volunteer firefighter. “Someone is having their worst day of their life, and you get to play a part in hopefully fixing it, or at least try to make their day better.”
Today, Mathias serves on the city’s Police Retirement Board and the Fire Retirement Board. He believes civic involvement strengthens the city and the people who serve.
“It helps to become part of the community, to create more ownership.”
Members of Goodyear’s Youth Commission recently represented the city at the National League of Cities conference in Washington, D.C.

My challenge is to level up your character in real life. Show everyone that we are the future.
William Miller Jr.
TURNING A CLOSE CALL INTO A CALL TO ACTION
Just shy of his ninth birthday, William Miller Jr. stepped up to tell his family’s story to the Goodyear City Council after a close call at a busy intersection as he and his grandmother were attempting to cross the street.
“I was scared. I love my grandma. I don’t want anything to happen to her,” he shared from the council meeting podium.
His courage sparked action. William sat down with Mayor Joe Pizzillo and met one-on-one with council members and leaders in public safety. Soon after, new safety features were installed at the intersection to make it even safer.
William’s determination earned him national attention as a young changemaker with a remarkably poised and thoughtful presence.

Nearly two years later, William’s voice is reaching far beyond city chambers. He has become a public speaker, sharing his story with large groups across the country and encouraging young people to be brave and stand up for what matters.
He recently spoke at his own school in Goodyear, where he addressed a packed assembly of his fellow classmates with the message, “There’s no right time. The right time is now.”
“I’ve noticed that a lot of kids are always focused on leveling up their character in games, but not actually in real life,” said William. “My challenge is to level up your character in real life. Show everyone that we are the future.”

William Miller Jr. stepped up to the mic at a public meeting to tell his story.
