FROM THE MAYOR

As the excitement of spring training returns to Goodyear, I want to take a moment to highlight the true heart of our ballpark, the volunteers.

When you visit us this season, you’ll notice the high-energy atmosphere and seamless guest experience that makes Goodyear one of the best destinations in the league. This doesn’t happen by accident. I am deeply grateful for our residents who give so generously of their time to ensure every visitor feels at home.

Our volunteers are the backbone of our operations. In 2025, we celebrated an outstanding year as over 152,000 fans visited

COUNCIL CORNER

Spring training is more than a seasonal attraction in Goodyear; it is a significant economic engine that delivers measurable benefits for residents and local businesses alike.

Each year, spring training brings thousands of visitors to Goodyear Ballpark and surrounding areas. These visitors support local restaurants, hotels, retailers and service providers, generating millions of dollars in economic activity during a relatively short period of time. That spending translates into sales tax revenue that helps fund core city services, including public safety, infrastructure maintenance and community programs that residents rely on year-round.

Local businesses feel this impact directly. For many restaurants and small retailers, spring training represents one of the

Goodyear Ballpark, a 4% increase from the previous season. This rise in attendance was only possible thanks to the selfless commitment of our volunteer team.

Whether it was a sold-out game or a busy weekend double-header, our volunteers were there to ensure everything ran smoothly. Serving in roles such as:

• Ushers providing a friendly face and guidance in the stands.

• Greeters offering a warm “Goodyear welcome” at the gates.

• Guest Services staff helping visitors navigate the facility and find amenities.

These individuals don’t just show up, they are true professionals. Every year, our volunteers attend specialized training sessions to stay well-versed in ballpark operations and safety protocols. Their expertise ensures that our “Goodyear hospitality” remains top tier, even as our crowds continue to grow.

I am so proud of the way our community comes together to showcase our city. When

you are at the ballpark this season, please join me in saying “thank you” to these dedicated residents; they are the ones making our spring training experience truly special for everyone who visits.

busiest times of the year, allowing them to increase staffing, extend hours and reinvest in their operations. These short-term gains often support long-term stability, helping businesses weather slower seasons and continue serving our community.

The benefits also extend beyond the immediate season. Spring training introduces Goodyear to visitors from across the country, increasing awareness of our city as a place to live, work and invest. This exposure contributes to Goodyear’s strong reputation as a business-friendly community and supports ongoing economic development efforts that attract new employers and amenities for residents.

From a city perspective, the infrastructure and partnerships that support spring training maximize the return on investment for taxpayers. Facilities such as Goodyear Ballpark are used year-round for community events, youth sports and regional tournaments, ensuring they provide value well beyond the spring season.

As vice mayor, I remain focused on ensuring that events like spring training deliver

real, lasting benefits for our residents. By strengthening our local economy, supporting small businesses and generating revenue for essential services, spring training plays an important role in Goodyear’s continued growth and financial sustainability.

LIVING THE SPRING TRAINING DREAM

For John, working at Goodyear Ballpark isn’t just a job, it’s living out a lifelong dream that started back in Ohio.

Baseball was always part of his life and even though it was a thousand miles away from his hometown, Goodyear Ballpark has long had a special place in his heart, too! Some of his favorite memories are family trips to Goodyear for spring training.

“Some people have Disneyland or the beach,” John said. “For us, spring training and baseball were our happy place.”

KEY TO SUCCESS

Behind every great day at Goodyear Ballpark is a team of dedicated spring training volunteers who help make the season run smoothly. From the moment fans arrive to the final out of the game, these friendly faces are working behind the scenes to keep everything moving. Spring training volunteers support a wide range of game-day operations. You’ll find them welcoming you at the gates, helping with seating and wayfinding, assisting at information booths, supporting special events and

lending a hand wherever it’s needed. Their knowledge, enthusiasm and willingness to help create a welcoming experience have fans returning year after year. For many volunteers, spring training is more than a seasonal role, it’s a tradition.

John started his baseball career in Ohio and joined the Goodyear Ballpark team in 2017.

“I always knew I wanted my career to be in baseball,” John says. “It feels like I am living out my childhood dream. I am doing exactly what I always wanted to do.”

“The ballpark is my second family. In my 15 years of returning as an usher, I still look forward to seeing old and new faces. Goodyear Ballpark is known as the friendliest ballpark in the Cactus league, and I aim to keep it that way!”

Spring Training Volunteer Judy Tarkowski
John worked as a bat boy before working his way up in the baseball world and eventually landing at Goodyear Ballpark where he’s critical in the ballpark business development and coordination of events like spring training.
