Welcome to National Dance Week

Use this guide to find dozens of dance workshops, classes, performances and social dances produced by individuals and organizations throughout the Eugene area. We have something for dance lovers of all interests, ages and abilities.

National Dance Week Kickoff Party

The week officially begins with a celebration of Eugene’s eclectic dance community. Local studios and choreographers will present a collection of serial short performances featuring a variety of styles. There will also be interactive dance activities throughout the evening, including figure artist drawing, a kids’ activity area and short dance lessons for all ages and abilities. This event is an inclusive dance performance featuring DanceAbility’s integrated suite of talented dancers. The public will experience this performance first as spectators, then have the option to participate in a freestyle jam. DanceAbility performances are transformative to experience, as they showcase the beauty of inclusion. The following jam invites viewers to undergo another metamorphosis, from spectator to participant, and embody the artwork that defines DanceAbility.

In honor of National Dance Week, Xcape is taking over WOW Hall for a powerful, joy-filled evening designed especially for adults who are curious about dance — whether you’ve never stepped into a studio before or you’re ready to return to movement. This isn’t just a workshop, it’s an experience. Throughout the evening, you’ll enjoy:

• A high-energy mini performance featuring our incredible adult dancers (everyday humans, not professionals, proving it’s never too late to move)

• Sample classes in a variety of styles so you can jump in and try it yourself

• A guided session on how to get started in dance as an adult

• Real talk about the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of movement

Blackthorn Academy of Irish Dance

Opened in 2023, Blackthorn Academy is Eugene’s only Irish Dance school. Dancers can be any age and any experience level. Classes are offered for beginners, advanced beginners, novices, prizewinners, championship-level dancers and adults.

Eugene Scottish Country Dancers

Scottish Country Dancers are a group of local community members who come together on a weekly basis to share their love of Scottish dance, music and culture.

RETRO

RETRO is a self-taught freestyle movement artist, teacher and mental health advocate. He combines elements and techniques of multiple dance styles while freestyling and creating his own story in the moment.

Thrill the World Eugene

Thrill the World has been thrilling our community for 13 years. At their global event in October, zombies join hundreds around the world to simultaneously dance to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Throughout the rest of the year, their dancers create choreography to popular music tunes and perform at community events and special occasions.

Beginning Heels Workshop Workshop/Class

This beginning heels workshop will cover the basics of heels technique and will include a thorough warm-up, across-the-floor exercises and some fun choreography at the end. Heels are not required! Learn Morris dancing, a traditional English folk dance from the borders of England and Wales. Enjoy Latin dancing at The Barn Light Bar in Eugene every other Saturday with Buenas Vibras Latin Dancing. Social dances start at 8:30 p.m. and go late, playing a mix of Latin music. All dance levels are welcome and a partner is not required.

Learn Morris dancing, a traditional English folk dance from the borders of England and Wales. It’s older than Shakespeare and celebrates seasonal festivals through dance and music to banish the dark of winter, honor the fertility of spring, celebrate the warmth of summer and revel in the bounty of autumn. Come dance with sticks, bells and music!

Contemporary Release Technique Workshop/Class

Explore this all-level friendly contemporary release technique class focusing on floorwork, alignment, articulation and full-body freedom through balancing and building momentum. Recommended attire: socks or bare feet and comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Led by Fermata Ballet Collective Resident Artist Mandi Moody.

In honor of National Dance Week we offer a 30-minute beginner waltz lesson in the Founder's Room studio and a social dance in the upstairs ballroom at the Vet's Club. We dance to DJ music with a variety of dance steps, including waltz, fox trot, several Latin, West Coast and East Coast swing dances and more.
