The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) provides children ages 6 months to 5 years with daily experiences full of learning, laughter, and love. Operated by the City of Emeryville, ECDC offers a safe, nurturing, year-round environment for families who live, work, or study in Emeryville. TRAINING The L.I.T. Program offers 9th-12th graders valuable volunteer experience in youth engagement or office settings. Teens will develop professional skills, fulfill graduation volunteer requirements, and serve as positive role models. Participants must commit to at least 15 hours across 3 days per week for 8 weeks. Completion makes L.I.T.s eligible for future employment!

Emeryville ECCL Teen Center is a welcoming, youth-focused space where teens can connect, create, and unwind after school. The center offers a safe environment with comfortable hangout areas, games, creative activities, and programs designed to support social connection, leadership, and personal growth—all right in the heart of Emeryville.
Memberships Memberships
Teen Center memberships at the Emeryville ECCL Teen Center are available for both Emery Unified School District (EUSD) students and nonEUSD students. Memberships give teens access to a safe, welcoming space to hang out after school, build friendships, and participate in games, creative activities, and special programs. Discounted rates are offered for EUSD students, with affordable options available for non-EUSD teens. All members and families are required to review and complete the Teen Center application and agree to the usage rules outlined in the Teen Center Handbook. These guidelines help ensure a positive, respectful, and safe environment for all participants.

The Emeryville Electric Eels offer a month-to-month membership for developmental, junior, and senior competitive swimmers. Participants receive coaching, curated workouts, and interval training to improve endurance and stroke techniques. Level 3: Seahorse
Private
Water adjustment and safety skills for parent and child. This class is not designed to teach toddlers to swim independently, but to increase the comfort level of children in and around water. Ages: 6 months - 3 yrs
In Level 3, participants begin stroke development. They refine front and back crawl, learn breaststroke and elementary backstroke, and practice treading water. Water safety principles, such as recognizing lifeguards and using life jackets, are emphasized. Ages: 6 - 11 yrs
Private swim lesson is a personalized swimming instruction session conducted one-on-one between a swim instructor and an individual student. Private swim lessons provide an opportunity for accelerated learning, immediate feedback, and customized skill development based on the student's abilities and progression. Ages: 3+
Preschool: Starfish The primary goal is to build water confidence and basic swimming skills through engaging activities, games, and interactive exercises. Instructors use ageappropriate teaching methods, incorporating play-based learning to make the lessons enjoyable for the little ones. Ages: 3 - 5 yrs
Level 1: Otter This beginner level focuses on water introduction and basic skills. Participants develop water entry and exit techniques, front and back float with support, and learn to glide through the water. Water safety rules and basic pool behavior are introduced. Ages: 6 - 11 yrs
Level 2: Jellyfish Participants in Level 2 work on fundamental aquatic skills. This includes floating without support, retrieving submerged objects, and exploring underwater. Basic front and back crawl arm movements are introduced, laying the foundation for future strokes. Ages: 6 - 11 yrs
Level 4: Dolphin Level 4 focuses on stroke improvement. Participants refine their strokes, including front and back crawl, breaststroke, and elementary backstroke. Sidestroke and butterfly are introduced. Treading water duration is extended, and participants learn basic water rescue techniques. Ages: 6 - 11 yrs
Level 5: Stingray Level 5 emphasizes is on refining skills, building advanced endurance, and preparing for more specialized swim training. Child must swim front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke for 15 yards independently in water that may be over their head. They will refine front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, and elementary backstroke. Ages: 7 - 13 yrs
Level 6: Orca Level 6 focuses on mastering advanced techniques, increasing swimming proficiency, and preparing for competitive swimming or specialized aquatic activities. Child must be able swim at least 25 yards of front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke in deep water. They will also practice treading water with different kicks and flip turns. Ages: 7 - 13 yrs

Adult I Perfect for adults new to swimming or building comfort in the water. Learn foundational skills such as floating, breath control, kicking, and basic body positioning in a supportive environment. Ages: 18+
Adult II For adults comfortable in the water and ready to refine their technique. Improve freestyle and backstroke, build endurance, and develop efficient breathing and body alignment. Ages: 18+
Teen I Designed for teens new to swimming or building confidence in the water. This class focuses on foundational skills including breath control, floating, kicking, and basic stroke introduction in a supportive, encouraging environment. Ages: 13 - 17 yrs
Refund/Cancellation Policy Refunds and cancellations will only be considered if they are requested within 14 days prior to the start date of the scheduled activity. In the event the Community Services Department cancels a class or program (due to inclement weather, low enrollment, etc.), a refund or make-up program will be offered. If the participant is unable to attend a class or program due to personal reasons outside of the dates specified, a refund will not be granted (including pro-rated refunds). A $10.00 administrative fee will be applied, per customer, for each refund/cancellation. This fee may be deducted from the total refund amount if requested.

Welcome to ESC, Hazel Barry!
Please join us in welcoming Hazel Barry, our new Supervisor at the Emeryville Senior Center! Hazel brings a wealth of experience to ESC, having worked in Senior Services with the YMCA in San Francisco, following 15 years in Outdoor Education. Hazel enjoys staying active through pickleball, golf, sailing, and swimming, and equally values quality time spent sharing meals with friends. Outside of work, you’ll often find her walking dogs, gardening, or baking fresh bread—which she happily shares with others! Hazel is excited to be working within her own community and looks forward to getting to know staff and members alike. We’re thrilled to have her on board— welcome, Hazel!

On February 2, 2016, the Emeryville City Council adopted Resolution No. 16-08 to establish a Property and Business Improvement District (PBID) Senior Rebate Program. If you are 65 or older, own your home and pay an assessment on your property for the Emery Go Round PBID, you may apply for a Senior Rebate that could mean savings for you.
How Do I Apply And Receive A Rebate? Where can I get an application? The application is available through the City of Emeryville Senior PBID Rebate Program: By calling: 510-596-4372 By emailing: city_clerk@emeryville.org On the City’s website www.emeryville.org Applications are mailed out to those who have filed in past years by the end of March each year.
When can I apply? To expedite receiving your rebate, we would appreciate submission of the application by May 1. Each fiscal year (JulyJune) the City will send an application to prior applicants at the end of March. New applicants can also submit their applications according to the timeline shown above.

Why should I pre-register for activities?
Almost all activities require pre-registration. Without preregistration, our staff will not be able to have the correct supervision or supplies to make sure you have a great experience. Note: A few of our community/special events and senior activities do not require pre-registration. These will be noted in the activity/event description.
How do I register for youth, adult, and senior activities/events in Emeryville? There are two (2) ways to register: ONLINE: Please visit www.emeryville.org/register to register for almost any program! www.rec.us/emeryville requires immediate payment, so make sure to have your debit/credit card or electronic check handy. Avoid wasting gas, paper, and time waiting in line…register online today! WALK-IN: Register in-person weekdays at the Emeryville Center of Community Life (9:00am-6:00pm) or Veteran’s Memorial/Senior Center (9:00am-4:00pm) for almost every activity and event. Be sure to bring your checkbook or credit/debit card too, fees are due in full to register for a program.
Why should I become a member of the Senior Center? Membership is only $31 per year, and entitles you to enjoy the many activities, events, and trips organized by the Senior Center. Members also receive ‘The LINK’, a monthly newsletter that gives up-to-date information that impacts seniors. Membership is open to residents and non-residents alike, so stop by the Senior Center to fill out the form or download it at http:// emeryville.org/150/50-Adults.
Emeryville Community Services Dept. Program Class Refund/Cancellation Policy
Refunds and cancellations will only be considered if they are requested within 14 days prior to the start date of the scheduled activity. In the event the Community Services Department cancels a class or program (due to inclement weather, low enrollment, etc.), a refund or make-up program will be offered. If the participant is unable to attend a class or program due to personal reasons outside of the dates specified, a refund or make-up lesson will not be granted (including pro-rated refunds). A $10.00 administrative fee will be applied, per customer, for each refund/cancellation. This fee may be deducted from the total refund amount if requested. *Certain Specified Senior Trip refunds must be requested within 30 days prior of the date of the trip. These will be specified in the Senior Center Newsletter “The LINK.” Activity locations are listed in each activity description. EMERYVILLE A SMALL CITY WITH A BIG STORY
The City of Emeryville lies on the east shore of San Francisco Bay between Oakland and Berkeley, directly opposite the Golden Gate and San Francisco. The city is small, just over one square mile, but its strategic location in the center of the Bay Area urban core at the confluence of several major freeways, one of the world's busiest bridges, and transcontinental rail lines with service to Seattle, Los Angeles, and Chicago, makes it a highly desirable place to live, work, and shop. Even before it was called "Emeryville," this place was recognized as an ideal location for settlement by indigenous people and the Spanish and Americans that followed them.

However, when the Spanish explored the East Bay region in the 1770s, they did not encounter any native settlements in the Emeryville area, although villages were found to the north along the Carquinez Strait, and to the south along San Lorenzo Creek. They attributed the scarcity of natives in the area to the great abundance of bears. There is no recorded evidence of indigenous habitation following the arrival of the Spanish, and archeological evidence shows no native habitation after 1650.

An Idyllic Place for Human Settlement
Just as it does today, Temescal Creek flowed into the bay from the eastern hills, and the willow thicket around its mouth provided an idyllic place for human settlement. Mudflats rich with lams and rocky areas with oysters, plus fishing, hunting, and acorns from the local oak trees provided a rich and

The 1st inhabitants of what is now Emeryville lived here for about a thousand years, and what little is known about them derives mainly from archeological evidence. These Hokanspeaking people were displaced or assimilated by another group of native people who are believed to have migrated to the area from the Central Valley around 500 AD.

The 1st people to arrive in North America came in small groups over a period of thousands of years, crossing the Bering "land bridge" between present-day Russia and Alaska when

State of The Estuary offers insights and opportunities for Sea Level Adaption Planning in Emeryville The San Francisco Estuary Partnership has been hosting the biennial State of the Estuary conference for 30 years. This year’s event was held at the Scottish Rite Center in Oakland on October 28th and 29th The event was kicked off by the San Franscisco Estuary Institute, with a scientist storytelling event at the Berkeley Sports Basemen On day one, the panels included announcement of the California Ocean Protection Council’s award of $2.2M for shoreline adaptation planning for Emeryville and our neighbors in Albany, Berkeley, and Oakland as facilitated by the SF Estuary Partnership. Work is expected to begin in 2026. Of the manyfold activities possible on the Emeryville Shoreline, several exciting opportunities have arisen: SF Estuary Partnership is seeking professional services to assess the feasibility of horizontal levees in the Emeryville Crescent Army Corp of Engineers is seeking additional funds to conduct a shallow water sedimentation pilot in the Emeryville Crescent in 2028 The State Coastal Conservancy is seeking professional services for developing 60% design drawings for natured based adaptation strategies among the intertidal and subtidal areas along the Emeryville shoreline and nine other pilot locations

The Rotten City Cultural District (RCCD) launched its first annual Art & Culture Month in October 2025, featuring three temporary gallery shows, nine public art and cultural tours, RCCD activities at the City Harvest Festival, a marquee event at Jered’s Pottery, and a 13-person artist/curator panel on earning commissions. Highlights included the Emeryville Celebration of the Arts’ 39th exhibition at the Emeryville Public Market (open through Oct. 26) and weekly Friday openings, including Pixar artists’ Beyond the Lamplight at Gallery 4509 (open through Nov. 14) and the Stamped and Approved Art Show on Oct. 17.
The California Cultural District program was developed by the California Arts Council in partnership with Visit California and Caltrans. The mission of the California Arts Council, a state agency, is to advance California through the arts and creativity. The Council is committed to building public will and resources for the arts, fostering accessible arts initiatives that reflect contributions from all of California’s diverse populations, serving as thought leader and champion for the arts, and providing effective and relevant programs and services
New installations included Packard Jennings’ birdhouse sculptures on the northern greenway and Patric O’Neil’s mural at Sherwin Garden, plus 50 RCCD banners by local artists Cesar Cueva and Basma Masood. Events and marketing were supported by ABG Art Group, which also installed Trent Thompson’s RCCD motto sculpture (“From

MEASURE B & BB FUNDING
In November 2000, Alameda County voters approved Measure B, a 0.5% sales tax, to deliver essential transportation improvement and services. In November 2014, voters approved Measure BB which provided a 30-year extension of the 0.5% sales tax and added an additional 0.5%. In November 2010, Alameda County voters approved the Vehicle Registration Fee (VRF) Program, authorizing the collection of an annual vehicle registration fee which began in May 2011. Measure B, BB, and VRF funds are distributed by the Alameda County Transportation Commission and have supported many of the pedestrian, bicycle, and street facility upgrades that have happened across Emeryville including: the Quiet Zone project, annual street repaving, multimodal safety improvements, and bike parking facility installations. Each year, the City of Emeryville receives approximately: $500,000 in Measure BB funding to improve and maintain our local streets and roads $50,000 in Measure BB funding to construct and upgrade pedestrian and bicycle facilities $60,000 in Measure BB funding or paratransit assistance to aid in the mobility of seniors and persons with impairments $45,000 in Vehicle Registration Fee funding to reduce congestion and vehicle pollution.
In 1990, AB 2766 was signed into law. This bill authorizes the California Department of Motor Vehicles to impose a $4 vehicle registration fee on cars and trucks registered within the Bay Area Air District (BAAD). This fee supports the Transportation Fund for Clean Air (TFCA), which funds transportation projects that reduce motor vehicle emissions. Approximately $1.8 million in TFCA funding is distributed annually, with 60% of the funds awarded to BAAD through the TFCA Regional Fund and the remaining 40% passed on to the Alameda County Transportation Commission (ACTC). ACTC then distributes this funding to cities. TFCA funding has supported key projects across Emeryville such as: South Bayfront Bridge Project (completed), $105,000 received 40th Street Multimodal Project, $172,000 secured for Construction

BULKY WASTE PICK-UP DOESN’T FIT IN YOUR TRASH CART? NO PROBLEM! Spring Cleanup is coming up! Residents of single-family homes may set out “bulky” items for collection during the month of April. Waste Management will collect these items on regularly scheduled collection days. Account holders may also schedule one additional annual bulky pickup by calling Waste Management at (510) 613-8710.

Residential properties with gray recycling carts can recycle batteries for free. Tape a sealed clear plastic bag of batteries (alkaline, button, rechargeable, or cell phone) to your cart and set it out on your regular collection day. EMERYVILLE TRANSPORTATION THE EMERY Emery Go-Round is a fare-free shuttle service, open to all Emeryville residents, shoppers, visitors and employees of Emeryville businesses. The service is primarily funded by property owners in the citywide transportation business improvement district (PBID).
As part of the Sherwin Williams Redevelopment project (“The Emery”) community benefits, the developer has funded a shuttle from the project site to West Oakland BART station that started operating in October 2022. This free shuttle available for everyone and is operated by the Emery Go Around.
