Welcome to our final edition for 2023. While each year seems to fly by, we’re now almost half way into delivering on our 2023/24 budget. There’s so many exciting projects on the go this year. I’m excited to see Ngutungka Henley start to take shape as construction commences to bring a new place of knowledge to our coastal community. This hub will complement Ngutungka West Lakes which has been monumental in shaping a new direction of a combined library and community centre for you - our community. Stage 3 of the Breakout Creek redevelopment is now complete and is ready for you to explore. Connecting into our coastal path at Henley Beach South, the $18.7m redevelopment has been a fantastic enhancement to biodiversity and community amenity. We thank the State and Federal Governments and the City of West Torrens project partners for their

Our core services will continue to ensure our City is supported and you can always contact us by phone during this time. Our libraries and community centres have a range of programs available for all ages this holiday season. There’s also a special program on for children during the school holidays. Civic Centre

Our Civic Centre will be closed from 3pm, Friday 22 December 2023 and will reopen on Tuesday 2 January 2024. Our Customer Contact Centre will be taking phone calls, emails and providing webchat support on non-public holidays, but no front counter services will be available. The holiday season is a reminder to appreciate what is truly important. We have been grateful to connect and engage with you through a variety of Christmas programs this festive season. Letters to Santa can be dropped off at our libraries, community centres and immunisation clinic until 10 December. The continued generosity and kindness of our community never ceases to amaze at this time of the year. Our annual Christmas Food Drive in support of Foodbank has once again been well received. Donations are still being collected across our libraries and community centres until 8 December, to assist those in need. Through UnitingSA, we have the ‘Give the Gift of Reading’ program again to help spread the magic of reading
to vulnerable children. Donations will still be accepted at our libraries and community centres until 8 December. These initiatives demonstrate how we can come together to make a real difference in our community. The spirit of Christmas remains alive and well across our City wherever you look from our Woodville Town Hall glowing in Christmas lighting, our Civic Centre’s internal street adorned with festive decorations, or the many community lighting displays from residents and businesses spreading holiday cheer. Beverley Recycling and Waste Centre The Beverley Recycling and Waste Centre will close from 1pm, Sunday 24 December 2023 and will reopen from Wednesday 27 December 2023. The Centre will be closed from 1pm, Sunday 31 December 2023, reopening on Tuesday 2 January 2024. Libraries Our Libraries will operate with reduced staff during opening hours across the Christmas/New Year period. All branches will close from 3pm, Friday 22 December 2023 with Findon, Ngutungka West Lakes and Civic branches reopening Wednesday 27 December to Sunday 31 December 2023. Hindmarsh will remain closed. All branches will be closed Monday 1 January 2024 and reopen from Tuesday 2 January 2024.
Please be aware Henley Library closed in late October 2023 for the construction of Ngutungka Henley due for completion at the end of 2024. Our Mobile Library Service will close from Saturday 16 December 2023 and will resume services to Aged Care facilities from Tuesday 2 January 2024, with full services returning from Monday 8 January 2024. Community Centres All our Community Centres (The Brocas, 19 on Green, Bower Cottages, Cheltenham, Findon, Henley and Grange Community Centre, Seaton North Neighbourhood Centre) will close on Wednesday 20 December 2023 and reopen on Monday 8 January 2024. Regular groups and hirers will continue to have access to centres during the closure except on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Immunisation Clinic Closed from Wednesday 20 December 2023 and reopening Tuesday 2 January 2024. Recycling and Waste Collection There will be no collections on Christmas Day, with collections scheduled for the following day (26 December).
VISIT OUR LIBRARIES This coming holiday season our libraries will be once again in full swing with a range of events and activities for people of all ages. Beginning with the Children’s Summer Reading Challenge, earn points and prizes by simply logging your reading online through our Beanstack Page. Beanstack is full of activities and book recommendations for kids and a great way to inspire and motivate young readers. This summer’s school holiday program, ‘Sustainable Summer’, will feature a sea-rollicking adventure celebrating a new local picture book – A Big Blue Boat – a special mermaid-themed yoga and story session at Henley Beach, a ‘Get Curious about Science’ workshop, and much more. Send your letter to Santa via our letterboxes located at all our libraries and community centers – and keep an eye on your post box as you might be lucky enough to receive a letter back - all the way from the North Pole! Get your letter template from us or you can find it on our website. Santa will also be making appearances at our Storytime sessions across our libraries in mid-December so keep your eyes peeled for the man in red. Don’t forget to help us inspire a love of reading in children who may not have books at home this Christmas through our ‘Give the Gift of Reading’ book donation drive for UnitingSA or you can donate nonperishable food items for Foodbank and make a difference this holiday season. Donations can be made at any of our libraries and community centres. The holidays aren’t just for the young ones, we will have some events for the adults too, including a festival decoration workshop, various art exhibitions across our libraries, a mindfulness and
meditation workshop, and an extensive range of digital programs for learning and embracing your creativity. There will also be sessions to learn how to protect yourself against the increasing number of online scams, how to buy and sell items online safely, and how you can get the most out of your smart phone. Join us for a session on creating art with Virtual Reality, and come along to a discussion about Artificial Intelligence, where you will hear from experts in the field and have your questions answered. A NEW COMMUNITY DESTINATION FOR HENLEY Following the closure of Henley Library in October, we are excited to start the construction of Henley Beach’s newest community destination Ngutungka Henley. The combined library and community hub will be located at 378 Seaview Road, Henley Beach and designs have incorporated the heritagelisted Henley Town Hall. Our community have played a key role in these designs and your feedback has been welcomed as we create a place where people can meet, join an activity, borrow from the library, study or attend an event. ‘Ngutungka’ is Kaurna for ‘place of knowledge’ and this will be our second hub, following the completion of Ngutungka West Lakes in 2022. Local people in our community give time to help others. Have you thought about lending a hand? We’re always looking for extra support and have a range of opportunities for you to be involved in.
Volunteer Bus Drivers and Aides Do you enjoy driving and are passionate about helping people? If you have an LR, MR and C class licence and love to drive, Volunteer Bus Driving may be for you. This service provides doorto-door shopping and transportation to social programs for eligible clients within our City. Shifts run on weekdays between 8.30am and 4pm. We welcome reliable, patient individuals who have a genuine interest in assisting the frail aged, and people with disabilities. If you are willing to undertake First Aid training (at no cost to you), and can successfully complete a driving assessment, we encourage you to apply. We also have Bus Aide positions available for those who love a chat but don’t want
the pressure of driving the bus to provide valuable support to our residents. Social Support and Kitchen Hand Volunteer Do you fancy a cuppa and love a chat? Do you have some skills and interest in working in the kitchen? If you have a passion and enthusiasm for our aged community and those with a disability, or just need some rewarding social interaction, consider becoming a Social Support and Kitchen Hand Volunteer. Our Arch Paterson Centre at Ridleyton runs a Social Support program from 9.45am to 2.15pm every Friday. Our Social Support and Kitchen Hand Volunteers assist clients to interact
in social activities, and support staff with meal provision and clean up. We encourage anyone looking to expand their communication skills, or an interest in serving others to apply. These are just two examples of over 40 volunteer roles we have across a diverse range of programs and locations with varying time commitments. IMPROVING OUR STREETSCAPES
Woodville Road It’s felt like a long time coming but we’re pleased to share works in our Civic heart of Woodville, Woodville Road between Port Road and the railway line, are now complete. Thank you for your patience as we work through this project. A project of this scale and size is not without its challenges and we acknowledge the inconvenience and impact to commuters and visitors to the area during the works. The streetscape upgrade has transformed the area to further support a range of aims under the Woodville Masterplan. Improvements along this section included: •
Undergrounding of powerlines, connection to properties and removal of stobie poles from Norman Street to Port Road.

Realignment of a water main to allow for tree planting in the central median.
•
A wider central median with
trees to bring shade and greenery into the street. •
Sheltered right turn lanes into side streets to improve road safety and traffic flow.
•
Improved DDA footpaths and crossing points for pedestrians.
•
New and improved public lighting and building façade lighting.
•
Improvements to outdoor dining experience.
•
Verge tree planting and landscaping.
•
Seating and public artwork.
•
Installation of a new Electric Vehicle charging station.

Avenue and Military Road, with a focus on walkability and providing safe access for pedestrians. •
There’s now a raised pedestrian crossing to support safe pedestrian access across Jetty Street and slowing traffic entering Jetty Street from Military Road.

Additional zebra crossings have been installed down the street to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity to the area.
•
Parking has been relocated away from the intersection to avoid cars reversing out of parks into the travel lane of turning vehicles from Military Road.
•
Right turns are no longer allowed from Jetty Street to Military Road. This will provide safer crossing for pedestrians across Military Road and also with vehicle movement through this intersection.

Nestled along the serene River Torrens/ Karrawirra Pari, Breakout Creek has undergone a remarkable transformation, turning from an artificial channel into a thriving nature based waterway that you must explore. The third stage of this revitalisation project is complete, unveiling a harmonious blend of nature and improved visitor amenities that make it a must-visit destination. Where the river meets the sea at West Beach, Breakout Creek/Purruna Pari offers an inviting escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The project was a $18.7 million partnership between Green Adelaide, the City of Charles Sturt, the City of West Torrens, the South Australian Department for Trade and Investment through the Planning and Development Fund, the Australian Government through the Environment Restoration Fund, and SA Water. Green Adelaide Board Chair Professor Chris Daniels said he is pleased to welcome the community back to Breakout Creek/Purruna Pari.
“I hope visitors and locals enjoy moments of peace at the new Kaurna Reflection Space and
enjoy the new picnic areas and trails – and make the most of the new river crossing,” Professor Daniels said. The 1.5 kilometre redevelopment has brought about a multitude of positive changes that promise an unforgettable experience. One of the standout features of Breakout Creek’s makeover is the creation of wetlands designed to capture and cleanse stormwater. These wetlands not only enhance water quality in the River Torrens but also provide habitats for water plants and native creatures, contributing to improved biodiversity in the area. The focus on environmental sustainability is evident in the removal of weeds, planting of native vegetation, and the installation of habitat pools that support fish and bird species, further enriching the local ecosystem. Visitors to the area can take full advantage of the 6.2 kilometres of shareduse trails that meander along and across the river. Wheelchair-accessible asphalt pathways and a pedestrian bridge ensure accessibility for all, offering a chance to connect with nature without limitations.
The well-loved horses along the river will soon be back with a new dedicated horse area stretching nearly 800 metres along the southern side of the river. For those interested in exploring the cultural aspects of the region, the new Kaurna Reflection Space is a haven of tranquillity. Located on the northern side of the river, this space, developed in collaboration with Kaurna artist Allan Sumner, offers a peaceful setting to reflect on Kaurna culture and history. It’s complemented by nine Kaurna artworks set to be installed in the coming months, further enhancing the cultural experience. Five new picnic shelters and six viewing platforms provide an opportunity to simply unwind while taking in the natural beauty that Breakout Creek offers. (The elevated boardwalk between Linear Park and Apex Park is still being constructed). Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone seeking a tranquil escape, we urge you to discover the magic of Breakout Creek and everything it has to offer.
GRANGE LAKES CORRIDOR SHARED USE PATH Providing a strategic walking and cycling route across our City.
The strategic walking and cycling route along the Grange Lakes Corridor is taking shape with Stage 4B, between Napier Drive and Jetty Street (alongside The Grange - the former home of Captain Charles Sturt), now complete. Working with the Charles Sturt Memorial Museum Trust to acquire a portion of land has enabled us to continue the path alignment. This section now features a viewing deck, seating, retaining wall, bike rails, and lighting along the new 2.5 metre wide concrete path, enabling a safe, accessible, all-weather off-road route for people who cycle, school children, parents with prams and the mobility impaired. This path links into the already completed sections of the Grange Lakes Corridor Shared Use Path, which on
completion will provide a continuous path for people to walk and cycle between the lake in West Lakes to the River Torrens. The project aims to align paths through open space areas next to the Grange Lakes drainage channel, along the creek next to Kirkcaldy Reserve, through linear reserves near Cudmore Terrace and next to the Henley and Grange Memorial Oval before winding its way through local streets to the River Torrens. Paths have been upgraded with public lighting, safety barrier fencing and new crossings over streets to enable a smooth and continuous path. Stages 1-6 from Trimmer Parade to Marlborough Street are now complete with future stages from Marlborough Street onwards underway with planning and design.
FUTURE STAGES Stage 7: Marlborough Street to North Street is currently in the detailed design phase with consultation planned for later this year. Stage 8: North Street to Atkin Street Currently in the detailed design phase with consultation planned for later this year. Stage 9: Atkin Street to Henley Beach Road Planned for construction over late 2023 and into early 2024 (to be completed March 2024). Further stages are yet to be determined and will be subject to future budget allocation.
OUR PLAYGROUNDS BRING JOY TO MONGOLIA

We are humbled to share that two of our decommissioned playgrounds have found a new home in Ulaan Bataan, Mongolia to be enjoyed by the local children.
Our playgrounds at George Jones Reserve (Riverview Avenue, Fulham) and Croydon Avenue Reserve (Croydon Avenue/Williams Street, Croydon) were due for renewal and upgrade. Still in good condition, we were pleased to hear they were able to be rehomed thanks to the Rotary Club of Kidman Park. Club members dismantled and labelled the parts of the
playgrounds to ensure they could be reassembled safely. In total, six playgrounds from multiple council’s across South Australia, and many items such as books, clothing, bedding, educational supplies and other equipment were also supplied by the clubs involved. Having recently landed in Mongolia, the playgrounds were unloaded from the container and assembled
by members of the Veloo Foundation and the Rotary Club of Gerege. They were installed in new kindergartens situated at opposite ends of the local rubbish tip to encourage children to go to school. We’re pleased to hear they’ll be enjoyed by more than 7,000 children who may not have had the opportunity to use play equipment like this which will complement much needed education programs.
Thanks to the Rotary Club of Kidman Park who reached out to us. We are grateful to be able to give to this collaborative project between the Rotary Clubs of Mt Barker, Murray Bridge, Mobilong and Kidman Park, initiated by the Rotary Clubs of Murray Bridge and Mobilong following a visit to the Rotary Club Gerege in Ulaan Bataan, Mongolia.

A member of Woodville Orion Tennis Club, Andriana (pictured) has autism and has just returned from the Virtus Global Games. Attracting visitors from all over Adelaide and beyond, Henley Beach is a popular spot during the summer peak season, but did you know jet skis are a no-go during this time? In the interest of community safety, the Henley Beach Restricted Area was implemented in 2016 and applies annually over the summer months to restrict personal motorised vessels along this stretch of coastline. All vessels fitted with an engine, such as jet skis and other personal motorised vessels, are permanently restricted between sunrise
and sunset during the period of 1 December to 31 March (inclusive) between the Torrens Outlet, Henley Beach South and Grange Road, Grange. This zone extends to 200m of the low water mark, which is just short of 200m off the shoreline. Motorised vessels can be used at many other locations along our coastline with access to the water via local boat ramps, such as at West Beach. Launching and retrieving motorised vessels is not permitted from the foreshore along our coastline. We want the beach to be a safe place for all visitors and swimmers alike.

Umbrellas at Henley Beach Our much-loved umbrellas are back along the grassed area at Henley Beach this summer. During the week they will remain in place with the canopies taken down each night. Over the weekend, from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays (weather dependant), they will be installed in the morning and removed each night. If the wind speed exceeds 25kmph we will remove the umbrellas for safety reasons.

Henley Beach mat The beach mat is again out, providing additional access to our beach for wheelchairs, prams and those living with a disability. It will be in use seven days
Bins Along the Foreshore Bins are emptied in the morning, with an additional collection in the afternoon to ensure the bins are empty, ready
for warm summer nights of enjoying takeaway along the coast. We’ve also installed additional bins at the Henley and Grange foreshore to support additional needs. Please don’t leave rubbish lying around, or next to full bins. Not only does it look messy, this can blow into the water and pollute the ocean. If a bin is full please take your rubbish home or find another bin that’s not so full, there may even be one closer to where you’ve parked.

UNIVERSITY BANNERS COLLABORATIONS TO BAGS
Did you know that the City of Charles Sturt regularly partners with universities? We often work with universities to stay up to date with current research, to identify new innovative approaches to the services we provide our community and to provide students with the opportunity to work on finding new solutions to real-life challenges. We are currently partnering with UniSA and the University of Adelaide on six diverse projects from play spaces, animal management and accessible tourism to ageing well and improving access to green space for low income and CALD (Culturally and linguistically diverse) communities. One particularly exciting project underway is the reimagining of a play space with climate change at the centre of our design thinking. Students are being challenged to design a climate resilient playground
using low carbon emission materials. The learnings from this project could lead to the inclusion of some of their design concepts into future play spaces. UniSA Health students are also working with people in our community who are living with chronic health conditions. Students have been developing individualised programs for participants to help them better manage their health and achieve their health and wellbeing goals. These personalised programs include activities that increase social connection and physical exercise, making healthy food choices and trying new hobbies. These pilot projects help us to continue to innovate and be progressive in our thinking. By experimenting, learning, and fine-tuning ideas we can use the knowledge and initiatives for larger projects in our community.
Since 2018, a dedicated group of volunteers have been quietly making a big impact through a heartwarming initiative known as Banners to Bags. Meeting every fortnight on Tuesday afternoons from 1pm to 2.30pm at 19 on Green, this group of creative individuals has been turning Council discarded banners into bags with a purpose. The concept is simple yet powerful, to find a new purpose for unused banner material. In the spirit of giving, the group have been crafting toiletry bags for donation. Last year alone, they donated 15 of these thoughtful bags to Catherine House (a shelter for women in need), spreading joy during the holiday season. In their mission to reduce waste and reuse these banners from ending up in landfill, they also craft shopping bags which they sell at 19 on Green to fund their material costs and to enable the purchase of toiletries for their charitable cause.

Additionally, the leftover bits of banner material find new life as bunting for children’s playhouses and creative items like succulent tin covers. The success of Banners to Bags depends not only on their sewing skills but also on the generosity of the community. The project thrives on donations of toiletry items such as shampoo, conditioner, face wipes, cotton tips, shaving razors, loofahs, body wash and body lotion. DO YOU ENJOY LISTENING TO A CHOIR SINGING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC?
We are a friendly group of retired ladies who meet on the second Monday of each month from 10am to 12am at Fulham Uniting Church Hall. We have a short business meeting followed by tea/coffee and then a talk. Our talks cover all manner of subjects be it charities, people’s adventures or a fashion show but all agree they are interesting and stimulating.
The Woodville Concert Choir will be presenting their Christmas concert “Celebrate!” on Sunday 10 December 2023 at 2pm at the Woodville Town Hall. Come and hear some old favourites and enjoy the guest artists. Tickets are $25 at the door or pre-book online at trybooking.com/CKICE
Once a month, members are invited to participate in an outing. These can be to the Adelaide Hills, a local cinema or a garden centre. WELCOME TO U3A CHARLES STURT The local branch of the University of the Third Age offers a range of learning and social activities for retired and semiretired seniors who want to remain mentally and physically active. We meet weekly on Tuesday afternoons during school terms to listen to guest speakers, and monthly on Thursday afternoons for special interest groups. There is also a weekly circle dance group for gentle exercise, plus visits to places of interest, and a coffee and chat group.
