MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Our City has begun 2026 with strong momentum and a clear focus on connection. This edition highlights the many ways our community is coming together to strengthen our neighbourhoods.

A significant milestone this year has been Council’s endorsement of our Statement of Commitment to Closing the Gap in Western Adelaide. This reflects how we will work alongside First Nations communities through genuine partnership and shared decision-making. Local government has an important role to play, and we stand ready to listen, learn and support Aboriginalled priorities. Closing the Gap requires trust and long-term commitment. We are focused on practical action that supports current and future generations.

Connection and belonging were also front and centre at the 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards. It was a privilege to recognise individuals and groups who are making a real difference.

Across our neighbourhoods, we continue to shape streets and shared spaces with people in mind. Projects such as Renown Park Living Streets and the staged Queen and Elizabeth Streets reconstruction show how infrastructure can do more than improve roads, it can create safer and more welcoming places. Seeing community-led public art come to life on Elizabeth Street is a wonderful example of how creativity can enhance public space.

We’re also proud to support programs that invest in people. The Upstairs Music Songwriting Camp is one example of how our community grants are creating opportunities for young creatives to build confidence and skills.

Consultation on our Draft Annual Business Plan 2026/27 opens in April. This is your opportunity to help shape the services and projects we prioritise in the year ahead. I encourage you to visit YourSay Charles Sturt and share what matters most to you.

There are many ways to get involved across our City, from pickleball and literacy challenges in our libraries to local events that bring our community together. We also look forward to recognising outstanding local businesses at our upcoming Business Recognition Awards. CLOSING THE GAP IN WESTERN ADELAIDE

Our Council has endorsed our Statement of Commitment to Closing the Gap in Western Adelaide, marking an important step in how we work alongside First Nations communities.The full Statement below reflects our promise to listen, learn, and support Aboriginal-led priorities through genuine partnership and shared decision-making. Closing the Gap requires long-term commitment, trust, and culturally safe approaches, and we are committed to meaningful action for current and future generations.

STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT TO CLOSING THE GAP IN WESTERN ADELAIDE

The City of Charles Sturt is a proud partner to the Western Suburbs of Adelaide Place-Based Partnership and commits to Closing the Gap.

The National Agreement on Closing the Gap recognises that all levels of government have a role to play in achieving meaningful outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. While this agreement is led by Federal and State Governments, local councils are uniquely positioned to make a difference — we are connected to our local communities and recognise the impact grassroots action and advocacy has within them.

The City of Charles Sturt acknowledges and embraces our Kaurna and First Nations history and communities, recognising First Nations in our Community Vision.

The Place-Based Partnership gives us a way to turn our commitment into meaningful action. Acknowledging local government does not lead the Place-Based Partnership priority areas of Social and Emotional Wellbeing, Community Data, Child Protection and Youth Justice, the City of Charles Sturt will be a conduit, connector, and enabler.

We commit to walking and learning alongside SAACCON and our government partners to best meet community identified needs through genuine shared decision-making and community-led approaches.

We approach this partnership with cultural safety at the centre. We commit to truth telling and truth listening and giving time for voices to be fully heard. We embrace two-way learning, recognising that we are both teachers and learners in this work.

We will take action that highlights the potential within people and communities, reflecting our values of being progressive and caring as we identify opportunities for growth.

SHAPING OUR STREETS

RENOWN PARK LIVING STREETS

Completed late last year, the Renown Park Living Streets project has invigorated the local area beyond simply resurfacing a road.

Rather than focusing only on resurfacing, we looked at how the street could work better for everyone. By rebalancing space for cars, we created room for people and nature, transforming the street into a safer, greener and more welcoming place.

The project included new kerbing, fresh asphalt, safer crossings, traffic calming, improved stormwater management and more greenery, all designed with people, not just cars, in mind.

Working closely with residents helped shape the final outcome, and with support from Green Adelaide, we boosted local biodiversity through extensive new planting.

The result is more than new pavement, it’s cooler streets, safer walking, reduced flooding, more trees and a space that brings the neighbourhood together.

QUEEN & ELIZABETH STREETS: PROGRESS AND PUBLIC ART

Works on Robert and Elizabeth Streets are now underway, marking the next stage of the road reconstruction.

One of the most exciting milestones to date is the completion of the Elizabeth Street footpath artwork, designed by local resident Ivana Kotasek. The artwork is a standout feature of the project, adding colour, character and a strong sense of place to the street.

Developed in collaboration with the community, the artwork reflects the project’s broader focus on creating safer, more accessible streets while strengthening local identity and connection. It’s a reminder that this project is about more than infrastructure.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS

We recently celebrated local community members doing extraordinary things at the 2026 Citizen of the Year Awards.

Mayor Angela Evans presented the awards at the ceremony held at Woodville Town Hall. Congratulations to all our deserving recipients. This year we had joint winners of the Young Citizen of the Year Award.

ANDREW PLASTOW –2026 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Andrew is a proud Kamilaroi educator whose leadership has transformed learning in our City. After 15 years as Principal of Alberton Primary, he founded Ngutu College, a K–12 school centred around inclusive and culturally informed education. Andrew was also recently named South Australia’s Citizen of the Year, a remarkable state honour.

CHERYL JAESCHKE –2026 SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Cheryl has been a committed advocate, artist, and community leader enhancing the character and liveability of Bowden, Brompton, and nearby suburbs for more than 34 years. Through Hindmarsh Greening, mosaic public art and projects like the Bowden Bird Walk, her leadership has strengthened local identity, green spaces, and community pride.

ST CLAIR COMMUNITY EVENTS, ST CLAIR CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT – 2026 COMMUNITY GROUP/EVENT OF THE YEAR

St Clair Community Events is a volunteerrun association that has grown the annual St Clair Carols into a major celebration. Led by a small committee and 30+ volunteers, they fundraise year-round to deliver this free, welcoming and multicultural event that attracts over 2,000 people.

CORDELIA STOTT SMITH – 2026 YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (JOINT RECIPIENT)

Cordelia is an outstanding young leader whose work with the South Australian Youth Forum (SAYF) has empowered young people across the state. She leads the 14–18 branch, drives major engagement initiatives, contributes to policy and research, and champions youth voices on key issues. Cordelia has achieved all this while completing full-time Year 12 studies with remarkable commitment and professionalism.

DOMENIC MONTELEONE – 2026 YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR (JOINT RECIPIENT)

Domenic is an inspiring young leader who revitalised the Croydon Cougars Soccer and Social Club, taking over as President at age 21 and rebuilding it into a thriving, inclusive community hub. Supporting 100+ players across five teams, he has strengthened wellbeing, connection and club sustainability through tireless volunteer leadership and innovation.

PREPARING FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Through our free Energy and Climate Change Assessment Grant, residents can receive a personalised home energy review – from checking window drafts to talking through simple changes that can make homes more comfortable and more efficient to run.

The program is designed for everyone, from renters to home owners alike. It focuses on practical low-cost improvements as well as preparing for hotter summers.

HOW COMMUNITY GRANTS MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We’re proud to support initiatives that strengthen our local creative community and provide meaningful opportunities for young people.

THE UPSTAIRS MUSIC X SONGBIRD SOCIETY SONGWRITING CAMP

At Songbird Society recording studios located in Bowden, 12 emerging South Australian women and gender non-conforming songwriters aged 16–25 were brought together for a two-day professional co-writing workshop.

Working with mentors including Sydney pop trio PEPTALK, an Upstairs Music artist manager and Songbird Society’s Billboardcharting songwriting coach and in-house producer, participants wrote new songs and performed them live, gaining real-world experience right here in our City.

Made accessible at no cost through the City of Charles Sturt’s grant funding, the program removed financial barriers while building skills, confidence and lasting creative connections.

CALLING ALL YOUNG STORYTELLERS

Is your child a budding author or illustrator? The Mayoral Make-a-Book Literacy Challenge is a fun way for young people to turn their ideas into a real book. Children can create their own book on any topic they choose, using their imagination to tell a story in their own style. Every entry is recognised, and the most outstanding books receive a $30 store voucher.

Children can see their story become a real book while building confidence and creativity through writing, drawing and storytelling. The challenge is open to preschool and primary school aged children who live or study in the City of Charles Sturt.

JOIN READ AND CREATE, FUN FOR LITTLE LEARNERS

Our preschool Storytime sessions have had a refresh and a new name. Read and Create is a fun way for families to enjoy stories, songs and creative play together.

For children aged 3 to 5, each session supports early literacy, fine motor skills and confidence while preparing little learners for school. Storytelling, music, movement and hands on activities help children explore their imagination and express themselves.

Sessions also give parents and carers a chance to meet other local families and enjoy learning together in a welcoming library environment.

Did you know our libraries offer a variety of bookable spaces for community groups, businesses and individuals at low-cost fees? Whether you need a quiet space to study, a meeting room for work, or a larger area for workshops and events, our libraries have options to suit your needs. Each library offers unique spaces. Some have small, private rooms perfect for tutoring, interviews or focused work, while others have larger meeting rooms and community areas for events, group activities or presentations. Many spaces come equipped with tables, chairs and technology to make hosting simple.

You can reserve rooms online or speak to library staff for assistance, ensuring your group has the right space. By offering flexible and accessible spaces, our libraries support learning, creativity and connection across the community.

Each year in April, we share our Draft Annual Business Plan. It sets out the services, projects and priorities we’re proposing to deliver in the year ahead, and how we plan to invest in our City’s future.

The plan provides a clear picture of how funding is proposed to be invested across services, programs and projects that support our community and shape our City, focusing on the things that matter most to you.

This is also your opportunity to have a say. Your feedback helps shape the decisions we make for the year ahead and ensures our plans reflect the needs, values and priorities of our community.

The Draft Annual Business Plan aligns with our Community Vision themes of Local Neighbourhoods, Valuing Nature, Vibrant Places, Our Transforming City, and Connecting and Belonging. These themes help guide how we plan and deliver for our community.

BUILDING AN ACCESSIBLE COMMUNITY

Our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2026-2030 has been shaped by strong community input.

The DAIP is our roadmap for creating a community where everyone can access services, participate in local life and feel welcome. It meets our obligations under the South Australian Disability Inclusion Act 2018 while aligning with the State Disability Inclusion Plan 2025–2029.

We thank the hundreds of community members and staff who shared their experiences and ideas during consultation.

URBAN SPORTS IN OUR CITY

Our City offers a growing mix of quirky, fun and inclusive sports for all ages and abilities with social and budget-friendly activities right on your doorstep.

DISC GOLF AT MJ MCINERNEY RESERVE

If you’ve ever wanted to try golf without clubs or green fees, disc golf is the perfect pick. With three baskets installed at MJ McInerney Reserve in West Croydon. You can create your own course, choose your starting point, and enjoy a low-impact, strategic game at your own pace. The reserve also features courts, playgrounds and picnic spots.

PICKLEBALL TAKES OFF

Pickleball is gaining momentum across our City, with new lines now ready at ready to play at Windsor Reserve, Sunningdale Reserve, Sam Johnson Reserve and Collins Reserve. Equipment is free to borrow from the City of Charles Sturt Libraries’ Library of Things, ideal for a spontaneous game.

MORE WAYS TO MOVE

Prefer wheels or workouts? Try the St Clair skate park, Aquatic Reserve BMX track, or free outdoor fitness stations across Point Malcolm, Blamey, Josiah Mitton and Woodville West. Scenic trails along the River Torrens, Henley Beach and Grange offer great options for walking, cycling or skating.

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR...

DROP-IN COMMUNITY IMMUNISATION PROGRAMS

Our immunisation program looks a little different this year. We’ve partnered with Health and Immunisation Management Services (HAIMS) to deliver monthly drop-in clinics across multiple locations, offering more flexibility and convenience.

All sessions are walk-in only, so no booking is required. View or download the 2026 Immunisation Calendar on our website to find a clinic near you. Child and adolescent vaccines are free for Medicare card holders.

CELEBRATING THE BEST IN BUSINESS

COAST SNAP GLOBAL CITIZEN SCIENCE PROJECT

Love our coastline? Help track how it changes with CoastSnap, a global citizen science project anyone with a phone can join. Visit a CoastSnap station, place your phone in the cradle, scan the QR code, take a photo and upload.

Photos taken from the same location help scientists and our community understand how weather, sea levels and daily activity shape our beaches.

CoastSnap stations are located at: Grange Jetty, Henley Jetty, Point Malcom Beach Access Ramp and West Beach.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY CLOSURES AND KERBSIDE COLLECTION

Our Civic Centre, Community Centres, Libraries (including return chutes) and the Beverley Recycling and Waste Centre will be closed for the entire Easter weekend (Friday 3 April to Monday 6 April, inclusive) as well as ANZAC Day (Saturday 25 April).

Kerbside bin collections scheduled for Good Friday will occur the following day (Saturday 4 April) while collections will continue as normal on Easter Monday and ANZAC Day.

The Business Recognition Awards shine a light on the energy, innovation and achievements of our local businesses.

Nominations open from 2 March to 6 April, and community voting for the People’s Choice Award runs from 13 April to 4 May.

Winners will be presented on 7 May 2026 at Woodville Town Hall in partnership with Western Business Leaders.

THE ADELAIDE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) performed a free community concert at Ngutungka West Lakes. The concert was conducted by Martin Butler and showcased a diverse program of works.

LUNAR NEW YEAR

We were delighted to celebrate Lunar New Year at Bower Cottages, welcoming the Year of the Horse with Mahjong, a shared feast, music and plenty of laughter. The event brought residents and families together to honour new beginnings.

JOIN THE GERMAN TABLE TENNIS CLUB

The German Table Tennis Club invites new members to join their Monday night sessions where the first three visits are free. Members can stay after each session for an optional meal and drink, a relaxed way to connect and socialise with others.
