Celebrating arts and culture in our City Welcome to the digital program for the City’s very first Flourish Community Arts Festival. Celebrating all things arts and culture in the City of Bayswater over October and November, Flourish promises to inspire and delight. With more than 65 events, workshops and exhibitions spanning art, dance, music, theatre, literature and culture, there is something for everyone. At the heart of Flourish is the City’s ever-popular Community Art Awards and Exhibition. I encourage you to take the opportunity and get along to view the outstanding works on display and for sale in this curated exhibition. I also invite you to head along to the City’s first RISE-Up Art Market, featuring local makers and artisans sharing their creations with the community. The City’s Community Art Awards and Exhibition returns in 2023 as the heart of the Flourish Community Arts Festival. A highlight in the City’s events calendar, the Community Art Awards and Exhibition celebrates the vibrant local arts scene and provides artists of all mediums, ages and backgrounds with a platform to share their work with the community. Head to The RISE in Maylands from Saturday 4 November to Saturday 18 November to enjoy the exhibition. For almost two decades, Leo has been involved in the City of Bayswater’s arts scene, working with artists and supporting the creation of an arts hub in the City. His career and Maylands business Studio 281 have allowed him to work closely with a range of people to represent the arts and promote positive wellbeing in our community. Since opening his commercial gallery space in 2007, he has curated more than 250 art exhibitions. Leo has curated the City of Bayswater Art Awards and Exhibition every year since 2019.

How do you select which artworks are included in the City’s Community Art Awards Exhibition? I assess artworks against several criteria depending on the category. These can include uniqueness, saleability, price point, previous exhibition experience and cross section of genres.

Frida Aditi –
Artist in Residence Congratulations on being the City’s Flourish Community Arts Festival Artist in Residence! Thank you. I am really pleased to be able to take up this opportunity to work at The RISE. I am excited about being able to contribute to building community in the City of Bayswater.

What can people expect from your residency? People are welcome to stop by to see some completed sculptures, works in progress and ask questions. Visitors will be able to contribute to a community artwork called the Tree of Gratitude. We will be using recycled materials to create this installation. The idea is to take some time to appreciate what we have and to express our gratitude for that. I will also be facilitating three creative workshops. My workshop style includes a strong emphasis on the importance of mindfulness, slowing down and enjoying the creative process.
Come along to the City’s artisanal market to browse a range of goods handcrafted by Perth’s finest makers and creators.
What do you hope to gain from your residency? I enjoy the synergy of community and am keen to create some community engagement with my work and art in general. Art is for everyone. I am planning to use the opportunity to develop ideas and maquettes for larger and public artworks.

What form of art do you specialise in? I am an emerging artist inspired by the energy and raw honesty of outsider and intuitive art. I often create with textiles because I enjoy the tactile experience of working with the materials. My dreams are a source of inspiration for my work. I enjoy using recycled materials in my artworks: the history of the materials adds value to the work.

The City is offering local primary schoolchildren the opportunity to have their artwork form part of a new feature wall at Bayswater Waves. Throughout October and November, students of local primary schools are invited to decorate blank tiles with colourful artwork showcasing what the much-loved recreation facility means to them. A number of students’ designs will be chosen to decorate a feature wall near the wave pool. The special feature wall will be unveiled at the grand reopening of Bayswater Waves in summer. This distinct mural depicts the history of the Bayswater area, with connections to the river and local wildlife on the wall of the Bayswater Library and Community Centre. Continuing around the building, the mural extends into a playful and imaginative world of fantasy.
