2026 Mayor’s Message
The City of Bayswater Community Art Awards and Exhibition is a highlight of our annual events calendar and celebrates the richness of our local arts community.
Each year, the awards provide artists of all ages, backgrounds and mediums with a platform to share their work, helping foster creativity and enrich our community with a sense of connection and cultural diversity.
The quality of artworks selected for this year’s exhibition is exceptional, with pieces submitted across a variety of mediums, including oil, watercolour, acrylic, textiles, digital media, ceramics, photography and sculpture.
I hope you consider purchasing a piece to take home once the exhibition has finished. Thank you to all artists who shared their talents with us by entering their works, and congratulations to our winners.

Assunta Meleca
2026 Judge
Assunta Meleca is a Secondary Education Specialist at The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA), where she facilitates workshops, develops learning resources and collaborates with peers across the arts and education sectors. Before joining AGWA, Assunta spent more than 25 years teaching visual arts in secondary schools. Assunta was recently appointed Vice President of the Art Education Association of Western Australia, reflecting her ongoing commitment to advocacy in art education. Alongside her work in arts education, Assunta maintains her own creative practice. Her markmaking work in fibre and mixed media investigates responses to the world around her, with a focus on texture, materiality and process.
Peteris Ciemitis
2026 Judge
Peteris (Peter) Ciemitis is an acclaimed portraiture artist whose work has featured in Australia’s premier national portraiture prizes. Peter won the Lester Prize for Portraiture in 2010 and has been a finalist twice in the Archibald Prize. His works are held in many major collections, including the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, the Hangzhou Qianjiang International Art Museum in China, the National Museum of Art in Latvia and numerous public and private collections in Australia. Peter has participated in major international art exhibitions in China, Italy, India, Latvia and Japan. He is currently Artistic Advisor to the Japan International Art Exchange Exhibition Committee in Tokyo.
Jade Dolman 2026 Judge
Jade Dolman (J.D. Penangke) is a Whadjuk, Ballardong and Arrernte artist whose practice explores culture, storytelling, connection to Country and environmental themes through a distinctive contemporary visual language. With more than nine years of professional experience, Jade has established herself as a respected voice in the Western Australian arts community, with major commissions, exhibitions and design collaborations across the country. Recognised for her commitment to artistic excellence, cultural integrity and creative innovation, Jade’s artistry is not just a reflection of her heritage; it is a powerful vehicle for First Nations storytelling and cultural preservation.
Leo Flavel 2026 Curator
For almost two decades, Leo Flavel has been involved in the City of Bayswater’s arts scene. Throughout his career, Leo has worked closely with a range of people to represent the arts and promote positive wellbeing in our community. Since opening his commercial gallery space in 2007, he has curated more than 250 art exhibitions. Leo has curated the City of Bayswater Community Art Awards and Exhibition every year since 2019.
