Preparedness in American Canyon starts long before an emergency occurs. That’s why I’m proud to share the launch of the American Canyon Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). This important initiative brings together the Fire District, City leadership, regional partners, and community members to identify wildfire risks and create a coordinated strategy to reduce them. The CWPP focuses on proactive measures like vegetation management, defensible space, community education, and partnerships that strengthen our ability to protect lives, homes, and the landscapes that make American Canyon such a special place to live. You may also notice some familiar— and very hardworking — members of our vegetation management team around town. Our “flock” of sheep has recently moved locations and is currently chewing their way through vegetation near Shenandoah and Sonoma Creek Way. These sheep provide an environmentally responsible way to reduce wildfire fuels, especially in areas that are difficult to reach with traditional equipment. If you’re in the area, stop by and see the great work they’re doing to help keep our community safer.

Another great opportunity to learn how to protect your home is coming up soon. The American Canyon Fire Protection District is partnering with Napa Firewise to host a free community workshop focused on Firewise landscaping and defensible space.

Firewise Landscaping & Gardening: Free Community Workshop

This hands-on workshop is designed for everyday homeowners, renters, and gardeners — no experience necessary. Whether you have a small patio or a larger yard, you’ll leave with practical steps you can take right away to help protect your home from wildfire.

Topics will include:

Choosing and placing fire-resistant plants that still look beautiful

Understanding defensible space and where to start

Simple, low-cost home hardening improvements

Local resources available specifically to American Canyon residents

This is a welcoming, conversational workshop — not a lecture. Come with questions and leave with a plan.

Don’t forget — it’s time to change the clocks

As we spring forward for Daylight Saving Time, it’s also a great reminder to check the safety devices that protect your home.

Take a few minutes to:

Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Test each alarm to make sure it is working properly

Check the manufacturer's date — alarms should typically be replaced every 10 years

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half, and a quick battery check can make all the difference when seconds matter.

Physical Fitness and Ladder Operations

This month, American Canyon Fire Explorers focused on physical fitness and ground ladder operations two fundamental components of the fire service.

The session began with a fitness workout aimed at building strength, endurance, and teamwork. Explorers then transitioned into hands-on training, learning how to properly carry, raise, and secure ground ladders, while emphasizing communication and safe operation.

Training like this helps our Explorers better understand the physical demands and technical skills required in the fire service, while continuing to build confidence and teamwork.

ACCERT, American Canyon Community Response Team, is a program that educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may occur where they live.

1/24/26 ACCERT participated in a 4-hour Traffic Management Training instructed by Sgt. Olson and Deputy Ringo of the Napa Sheriff’s Department.

2/8/26 Napa County CERT completed its first Spanish Basic CERT Training of the year.

2/7/26 ACCERT along with Napa CERT, Calistoga CERT, Berryessa CERT and Del Valle CERT were able to lend our assistance to The Town of Yountville for their annual Mardi Gras Parade.

2/21/26 ACCERT participated in the Napa County CERT Annual Skills update. We were able to hone in our skills on Head-to-Toe Assessments as well as Cribbing. We also received training on Betterment Impact which is a Management Program that is being utilized throughout all of the Napa County CERT Teams.

Are you seeing double?

In 2022 to a contra ncies across the country, we experienced the long manufacturing timelines that have become common in the fire service. In late 2025, we were finally able to take possession of these two 2025 model engines, and we are excited to bring them into service for our community.

These engines were designed with direct input from our in-house personnel to meet the unique needs of our department. American Canyon Fire is an all-risk agency, meaning our firefighters respond to a wide variety of emergencies — from fires and medical calls to rescues and complex incidents. Because of that, our apparatus must carry a diverse range of equipment and be ready to respond to any type of call for service, at any time.

Just as technology evolves, so do fire engines. These new apparatus incorporate modern safety features, updated technology, and improved operational capabilities that will help our firefighters perform their jobs more safely and effectively.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to our Board of Directors for their leadership and support throughout this process. Strategic investments like these ensure that our crews have the tools they need to continue serving the American Canyon community at the highest level.
