his month we are proud to be sharing the inspirational stories of local Real Estate Professionals, Lawyers and of Michal Nemecek …who is living proof of ‘When the going gets tough, the tough get…’ well, rolling, riding and swimming in his case! More often than not, our own health is put on the backburner in favour of more visible issues such as the mortgage being due, the car that just won’t stay fixed or the health and wellness of loved ones. It’s like the age-old airplane oxygen demonstration – you must first take care of yourself, because without you being fully functional and sound, you can’t give others the help they may need. There is no shame in taking steps and seeking professional health or wellbeing help, or offering it to others. From spectacular garments to bizarre bras, the World of WearableArt has captured the imagination or artists, designers and the world-wide community for 27 years transforming an original idea into the most unique and successful annual event in New Zealand’s cultural calendar. As with most things the concept of WOW started from humble beginnings when in 1987 Nelson sculptor Suzie Moncrieff came up with an original idea to promote her rural art gallery. She decided to take art “off the wall”, put it on the human body and design a theatrical show to present the creations. So was born the World of WearableArt Awards Show, or WOW as it is now known in New Zealand and around the world. Suzie encouraged a handful of Nelson designers to create garments for an audience of 200 people, unaware that this small beginning would evolve into a unique international phenomenon. WOW now attracts a remarkable range of international artists, designers, costume makers and craftspeople who work painstakingly and passionately to present their creations on stage in front of an annual audience of 50 000. WOW is the most successful event of its type in the world. Judging is a highly competitive and selective process that sees both New Zealand and international entries whittled down to around a couple of hundred that will make it on stage. This exposure has launched, and often re-launched, the careers of many designers. Over the years countless talented, dedicated and creative people have helped write the WOW story. This includes designers, the models and performers, the artistic and productions teams, the sponsors, the audiences and the management team. Without their consistent passion and tireless commitment, Suzie’s concept could never have flourished into the international phenomenon that WOW is today. When asked about the development of the WOW concept and the success that it continues to achieve Suzie describes, “ so much of who we are and where we’re from is presented in what we wear and how we wear it. Since the beginning of human history our bodies and what we put on them has formed a central pillar of cultural tradition. We’ve painted and tattooed them, and dressed them with ceremony and ritual to represent spiritual, social and sexual messages, usually as an expression of tribal cohesion and identity. Today, Western society’s preoccupation with covering the body is dominated by the global fashion industry. It is a myopic focus however, that, irrespective of the skill and creativity of the design, encourages conformity and a preoccupation with branding.
For me, the joy and energy of WearableArt is that it enables designers to step out from these constraints, and to see the body as a blank canvas on which they can develop any idea that appeals to them. The more provocative, unorthodox and original, the better. The garments do not have to be commercially viable. They do not even have to take themselves seriously. The only thing they must be is wearable. Creators have the freedom to use painting, sculpture, textiles, costuming, engineering and electronics - in fact any medium to realise their vision, from 20 664 plastic collar stays to 600 000 glass beads, from human hair to wood, corrugated iron to kitchen utensils or taxidermied birds to sumptuous silks. Even after 27 years of judging thousands of garments, I never tire of seeing the extent and creativity that WOW generates, and it propels and inspires me to create yet another show. I urge the audience never to take for granted the patience, the passion and the hours of dedication each individual work of art takes. It is truly inspiring and they, the artist, are truly inspirational.” The WOW, World of WearableArt Exhibition presents for the first time a selection of award winning works drawn from the WOW Permanent Collection. These works are the best of the best and have been handpicked to represent the 27 year journey of the WOW story through the marvelous creations that have captured the world’s imagination during this period. June is National Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, an annual initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia to raise public awareness of a disease that claims the lives of 77 Australians every week. Bowel cancer is the second most common type of newly diagnosed cancer in Australia affecting both men and women almost equally and is Australia’s second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer. The facts: • Bowel Cancer is the second largest cause of cancer deaths in Australia. • 1 in 12 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer by age 85. • Of the 291 new cases of bowel cancer diagnosed every week, 96 people will die from the disease within five years. • It can affect anyone – men and women; young and old. • 75% of people who get bowel cancer DO NOT have a family history of the disease. • Factors contributing to the risk of bowel cancer include age, a diet high in red or processed meat, high alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and being overweight. • If caught in time, 90% of bowel cancer cases can be treated successfully. • Screening for bowel cancer is simple and can be done at home with a self-testing kit. • Currently, fewer than 40% of bowel cancers are detected early. Bowel Cancer Awareness Month has a positive message – saving lives through early detection – as bowel cancer is one of the most curable types of cancer if found early. It’s time to shine the light on the men in our lives, and their health concerns. Perhaps one of the biggest but least talked about issues men face is the clutch of addiction. But they’re not alone. Men and women, young and old, addiction doesn’t discriminate. It can affect anyone, any time and for any reason. Lives Lived Well is a support organisation, providing programs and services to tackle addiction across Queensland. This month we talk to the associate clinical director Dr Joel Porter about addiction among men and the help available…. When we talk about addiction, we often think of illegal substances. But as Dr Joel Porter explains, addiction comes in many forms. “People might use alcohol or other drugs or gambling or even pornography,” he says. “They can be addicted to a substance or a behaviour.” Realising and identifying an addiction can be difficult Dr Porter says, with many people assuring themselves they have control of their individual situation. “In a lot of ways people develop addictions like they do unhealthy relationships,” he says. “It starts off good and exciting, then it takes on a life of its own, it changes, and what was enjoyable, bringing meaning and pleasure into their life, is now taking that away from them.” Dr Porter suggests most people with an addiction are aware something is off-balance in their life, but many, and males in particular, hesitate to ask for help. “Asking for help isn’t about admitting you can’t do something or you’re weak, it’s about making good choices in your life. It’s important to talk to somebody who can be objective, not your drinking or gambling buddies.” And help is at hand. Lives Lived Well offers a Cairns ‘shopfront’ offering intake and assessment services. Appointments can be made by referral, phone or walk in, and staff can help connect people to the most appropriate services for their needs. Lives Lived Well also operates three residential rehabilitation facilities, one in Brisbane, one on the Gold Coast and one in the Atherton Tablelands known as Shanty Creek.
Shanty Creek specialises in rehabilitation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women, whose lives are affected by alcohol and other drugs. Participants are supported in learning how to deal with emotions, challenges and difficult situations without turning to substances or negative behaviour. “We aim to help them make and sustain ongoing change for a higher quality of life,” says Dr Porter. “We don’t have a one size fits all model of care. We work in collaboration with people and get to know their values and goals, what’s important and meaningful to them and help them make choices that move towards the good things in their lives. When people find they can live a life that’s more enjoyable and meaningful without using substances or other addictive behaviours, it can really turn things around.” Lives Lived Well can also offer support and guidance to those concerned about a loved one’s addictive behaviours, and employers concerned for staff welfare. Dr Porter recommends a ‘sooner rather than later’ approach, handled with professionalism, discretion, and genuine concern for the person’s health and wellbeing. “Approaching someone about these issues can be very intimidating so it’s important to be direct but compassionate. It doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a job either. Show them you’re willing to give them the time they need to get well so they have something to work for.”

Sometimes, it seems, life just simply gets too much. Although we try at all costs to portray being fully in control of whatever life throws at us, this is not always how we truly feel on the inside. We are faced with work demands, our children’s needs, home duties, financial pressures, family issues, relationships and the list goes on. Also, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. How is it possible to fulfill all these duties in the time we are given? Poor health, an accident that may prevent us from working, or some sort of trauma, may just be the tip of the iceberg. Any of the above or a combination of all may leave us feeling completely overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, irritable and exhausted from the continuous struggle with life and the way we feel. We may find it difficult to make decisions or even memorising the next thing we were going to do. We can’t sleep and feel foggy the next day. We may withdraw from friends and family and our loved ones are often at the receiving end of our emotions…..and then there is our good old friend guilt. Guilt for treating our loved ones the way we do, guilt for not being the parent we want to be, guilt for over eating, guilt for drinking far too much. Feeling helpless… Maybe by pretending there is no problem, hiding our true feelings and thoughts then maybe it will just go away?! But has it gone away? How long have you been feeling this way? Almost half the population of Australia (45.5%) experiences a mental health issue such as anxiety or depression in their lifetime and only approximately one third seek help(1) with men generally being the ones less likely to accept assistance(2). Fortunately, times have changed. Psychological and emotional well-being has become an integral part of our health care system. While there is some normality to be feeling overwhelmed at times by todays demands, if any of the above emotions are persistent, help is available. Dr Flockhart, Clinical Psychologist and principal of Dr Ina Flockhart & Associates – Clinical Psychology Health Centre in Smithfield, is working in close collaboration with highly skilled Clinical Psychologists and Senior Psychologists who have gained specialised knowledge through years of post-graduate training and
a vast amount of experience in the treatment of adults, children and families. The famous adage “Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional” is summing up the above nicely. You cannot avoid pain in life, it will happen but you have a choice whether or not you are going to remain emotionally distressed by it in the long run. We caught up with Cairns Taipans forward Stephen Weigh for an athlete’s scoop for Men’s Health Week.
1: Off season, what do you do to keep active and fit? I believe balance is key. The off season is the perfect time to achieve this. Officially, at the Taipans, we have 6 weeks in every off season where we aren’t obligated for any training or promotional work for the club. Throughout this time I choose to stay active in a number of ways. Playing golf, morning yoga, swimming, and running are just some of the ways I choose to stay active. 2: Strict diet, or anything goes? At the Taipans we are very lucky to work along side the expert team of nutritionist at Health Management Cairns. They do a great job at steering us in the right direction so that we can perform at the highest level at all times. In saying that, it’s not always grilled chicken, salad, or grilled fish. Variety is the spice of life and our nutritionists do a great job of keeping our food choices fresh to avoid blandness or boredom. 3: Biggest health or fitness concerns as an athlete? As a younger professional athlete, I once let the uncertainty of a lack of preparation worry me into overtraining and it would on occasion affect my performance. Now, coming into my ninth season of professional basketball, I’ve managed to over time develop a
routine which works best for me in my preparation. 4: Ever had an injury, how did you recover? I’ve been very fortunate to have only suffered a few minor injuries over the course of my career. I’m a firm believer in injury prevention. So whenever I get a chance, I work closely alongside our expert team of specialists. 5: What do you do to unwind from a busy week? Personally, finding time to unwind, especially during the N.B.L season, is just as important as the 500 extra 3-pointers a basketball player shoots every week or the extended hours a golfer might put into perfecting his swing. I like to dive into my record collection, play golf, catch up with good friends, or simply just relax at home with a decent movie. 6: Number one Taipans training exercise and tip? Work hard, work smart, and be honest with yourself. Consistently working hard is one thing. What separates ‘good to great’ is having the ability to be honest with yourself, identify your weaknesses, then make a plan or set goals to improve your weaknesses.

The Elephant in the Room: prostate. No, just because you come to the doctor you won’t have to have “ that “ examination. Like all health matters, it’s about risk and symptoms. In younger men, while prostate infections may recur, there is no need to check either the blood test or manually. As we age, our prostates grow and sometimes become malignant. The PSA blood test is only a guide, and while a single test means nothing, a series over some years can be useful, especially if it changes suddenly. We also check for ongoing symptoms, blood in the urine, and yes occasionally, we do a “ rectal examination”. No body has ever died from a rectal examination! Our team of long-term local doctors are experienced in assessing and managing musculoskeletal injuries and in “exercise prescription”. These days we still see lots of back and shoulder injuries from work, but also plenty of sporting injuries and of course arthritis. Heart attack and strokes remain the biggest cause of death in men. NOW IN CAIRNS Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia and the third most common cause of cancer death in men. More than 3000 men die of prostate cancer in Australia every year; almost twice as many as Breast Cancer. Until now, a blood test called PSA (prostate specific antigen) and a digital rectal examination were the main ways of detecting prostate cancer. ‘Many men are then sent for a transrectal ultrasound biopsy (TRUS)’, said Dr Daynes, radiologist at Cairns Radiology. An ultrasound probe is inserted rectally to identify the prostate gland. A small needle then passes through the ultrasound probe to collect small samples of the prostate gland. Because it is difficult to clearly visualise where the cancer is located, usually 12 needle samples are taken, sometime more. The procedure is usually performed under a local anaesthetic with sedation with some patients requiring a night in hospital.
Until now, this was the only method available to make a diagnosis of prostate cancer. NO MORE! Over the past few years there have been major advances in the detection of prostate cancer, in particular the multi parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) that examines the structure and function of the gland. ‘mpMRI allows the radiologist to see the possible cancer’, say Dr Daynes, ‘this means far fewer needles up your rectum as you can see the needle going directly into the area of maximum concern’. Only one or two needles are generally needed with mpMRI instead of possibly 12 or more with the traditional ultrasound guided method. This has major advantages for patients in reducing discomfort, bleeding and risk of infection. Multi parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging is done on a special 3T Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner along with

specific software and a specialty biopsy robot that is used to obtain extremely accurate biopsies of the prostate. More men are affected by diabetes than women. Type 2 diabetes makes up 85 to 90 per cent of all people with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can occur at any age, although is most common among those who are overweight and aged over 40 years. Although Type 2 diabetes can be managed through maintaining a healthy weight, ensuring a nutritious diet and engaging in regular physical activity, diabetes may cause complications leading to reduced quality of life and early death. Complications of diabetes include heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidneys failure, amputations, tooth decay and gum disease and last but not least, erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction (ED), the persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance, is three to four times more prevalent in men who have diabetes. This has a significant impact on quality of life and cardiovascular complications are higher in men with diabetes who develop erectile dysfunction. ED is a treatable complication of diabetes. Lifestyle changes improve sexual function in about one third of obese men with ED. Optimal blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol, stop smoking, reduced alcohol intake, healthy diet and regular exercise play an important role in the management of ED. Testosterone levels are reduced in people with type 2 diabetes and testosterone replacement may correct and/or facilitate the treatment of ED. The impact of ED in men with diabetes is underestimated and the screening and treatment remains inadequate. Common reasons for the patients and doctors not discussing ED may be patients not wanting to put themselves in an awkward situation, patient’s incorrect information in regards to treatment options for ED, difficulty of finding the appropriate words, embarrassment in opening up on such a sensitive topic, doctors fear of putting the patient in an uncomfortable position and lack of time during a doctor consultation. The time between the onset of ED and symptomatic heart disease provides an excellent opportunity for risk factor reduction and assessment at regular intervals. In summary ED is one of the most common complications of diabetes in men and can have devastating effects on the man’s quality of life. Prevention is the key as always however there are number of management options available through consultation with your GP. Addressing symptoms of ED can reduce the man’s risk of having a heart attack. Don’t let diabetes wreck your sex life, take action today!

Urologists are the medical specialists who deal with men’s health problems related to the urinary tract and genital area including problems related to disorders of the male hormone testosterone. When most people think about Men’s Health they think about problems associated with erectile dysfunction (ability to get an erection) and to father children. They also think about prostate health and checking for prostate cancer. Recently, the availability of multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging has become available in Cairns. This scan is entirely painless and involves lying still, flat on the back for half an hour while the scan takes place. There are no probes required for this scan which can identify areas suspicious for prostate cancer. However, Men’s Health constitutes a great deal more than this. Men have a greater chance of smoking related diseases and in urology that means that they have a greater chance of smoking’s effects such as reduced ability to achieve and hold an erection. There are a number of clinical studies which show that problems with erections indicate that there may also be problems with heart disease. Smoking can also cause abnormalities of sperm and impair fertility. Also, there is a significant relationship between smoking and bladder cancer. Men also have an increased incidence of kidney stones. The reason for this does not seem to be clear but given the old adage that “Prevention is better than Cure” then it is worth considering that increasing the fluid throughput gives significantly greater chance of prevention. Also, a squeeze of
lime or lemon juice in water reduces that chance further. As men get older their hormone levels tend to decrease and as a result they can become tired and irritable as well as put on weight and have a tendency to develop what is sometimes referred to as the “metabolic syndrome”. This can have effects on general well-being and result in problems with urination, erections and non-urological conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnoea. The Government has approved the HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) Vaccination for boys. It has previously been only available for girls to reduce the incidence of cervix cancer. This is a very contagious virus which can lead to genital warts and HPV-related cancers. So where a vaccination is available it is important for it to be considered for the benefit of the community as a whole.

Both programs allow applicants between 18 and 30 who are from eligible countries, with reciprocal arrangements with Australia, to have an extended holiday in Australia for up to 12 months with working rights. The visa allows for work of up to 6 months with any one employer, study rights for 4 months and multiple entry to and from Australia while the visa is valid. To qualify for the 417 visa applicants must have turned 18 but not yet turned 31, hold a valid passport from a country involved in the program, not previously been here before on a 462 visa. They must demonstrate they are a genuine visitor who wants to have a holiday in Australia, has enough money to support themselves (about AUD 5000) and enough money for a return flight out, and applicants must not be accompanied by dependent children at any time during their stay. Applicants also must meet health and character requirements. To qualify for the 462 visa applicants must meet all of the same requirements as the 417 as listed above. Additionally 462 applicants must meet educational requirements, have functional English and have a letter of support from their government (except applicants from the USA).
Only 417 visa holders have the opportunity for a second working holiday visa allowing an additional 12 month stay. To qualify for a second visa 417 applicants must have complied with the conditions on their first working holiday visa, have not previously held more than one working holiday visa and have completed three months of specified work in regional Australia while on their first working holiday visa. Approved industries for specified work include plant and animal cultivation, fishing and pearling, tree farming and felling and mining and construction. Only specified activities within these industries and performed in a regional area counts. Examples of specified work activities include picking fruits on an orchard, feeding and herding cattle on a farm, horse breeding and stud farming, landscaping the grounds of a construction/house site, painting the interior/ exterior of new buildings, conservation and environmental reforestation work, zoo work involving plant or animal cultivation, erecting fences on a construction site and scaffolding. ‘The Great Start Grant’ previously known as the ‘First Home Buyers Grant’ changed in October 2012. The grant is a government initiative to see nonhomeowners achieve their desire of purchasing their first home. The incentive is currently $15,000, which can be used to build or purchase a new home under the value of $750,000. This grant was initiated to boost the decline in homeownership across Australia. There are a number of requirements that an applicant needs to meet in order to be eligible for the grant. If you are thinking of purchasing your first home and wanting to know more about the Great Start grant, the Queensland Government website has an easy 5 minute questionnaire to determine an individuals eligibility. If you are found eligible you can also download the grant application forms to get you started. If you are unsure or not very technologically savvy you can speak to your local real estate agent and home loan banking institution to learn more about the process of the grant.

he Cairns real estate industry is entering exciting new territory, welcoming interest from international markets and opening new doors of opportunity for local people. Where 20 years ago agents looked only to the local market to sell property, RE/MAX Cairns now leads the way in promoting properties to overseas buyers. It has revolutionised the way Tony Williamson and his team do business and it’s driving record results month on month. Tony says the Cairns real estate market now has the attention of the world. “There are many overseas markets – Japan, China, Philippines, India, South Africa, United Kingdom, for example,” he says. “Each foreign investor has differing reasons for investing but one thing they have in common is they see Cairns as somewhere they want to invest, because they see opportunity for yields and capital gains in a relatively solid economy, and a good lifestyle.” Tony has also identified new markets in emerging economies like China, Thailand and the Philippines. “The size of the middle class is booming and expanding at a dizzying rate. These are the investors who want to buy. “They are the new ‘mum and dad’ investors, a group growing at a rate of knots almost too fast to comprehend.”

RE/MAX Cairns joins an international group of more than 6600 offices in 95 countries, providing even greater exposure for Tony’s team, and their property portfolio, on the world stage. Tony will be a key player in the inaugural RE/MAX AsiaPacific network Conference and Property Fair in Singapore next month, forging valuable international agent-toagent links. Australia and New Zealand will be among 13 regions involved including Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, Guam, Korea, China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka and Mongolia. “In March I was invited to speak at a similar world conference in Las Vegas, and I was a proud representative of Cairns, out in front of thousands of agents spreading the word that Cairns is the best place in world.” It’s the excitement of the chase that has sustained Tony’s interest in real estate since his start in the industry at 21. Born and raised in Cairns, he always had in interest in property and sales and jumped at the opportunity to combine them in a career. At 24 he left for a short while to complete a Bachelor of Commerce in Townsville, but returned to real estate until an offer too good to refuse, using his accounting degree working for Price Waterhouse for six years.

“It was Christmas 1999 and my wife and I were on the back deck, talking about the way forward,” Tony recalls. “We both love Cairns and wanted a future here, so decided to open our own real estate agency.” After five successful years in the Century 21 franchise Tony made the switch to RE/MAX in 2004, and in 2006 ‘retired’. Until 2010.
“What can I say, property is in my blood,” he laughs. “Through momentum and hard work, we’ve built a beautiful business.” Tony likens real estate to sport, and says the job is performancebased and depends on individual performance in a team environment. “You are completely accountable to yourself and limited only by your own performance,” he says. “It offers security and a very good lifestyle, and the days of real estate agents working every weekend and late nights have changed.”

cott Mitchell strongly believes in a balance many real estate agents say isn’t possible. That is achieving a win-win situation for both the buyer and seller in property sales. “I see the buyer as an integral part of the sale, without a buyer you’ve got no sale and by building good rapport with the buyer you’ve got a higher chance of gaining the best possible outcome for your seller. “As well as providing the opportunity for the seller to move on to their next venture, we’re also helping the buyer into the next exciting phase of their life, so a dual focus is important” says Scott Mitchell, licensee of Elders Cairns. As the son of senior Cairns real estate identity and Elders principal Denise Mitchell, Scott admits his mother’s 25plus years in property initiated his interest in the field. “I guess unknowingly I developed a passion for real estate in not only sales but also in terms of growing an interest for design and the different styles and construction of homes. According to their guidelines “A house’s energy efficiency (star rating) applies to the design of the ‘building shell’—roof, walls, windows and floor. The building shell significantly influences the indoor comfort and energy efficiency performance of the dwelling. It does not include major fixed appliances like air conditioners, hot water systems, lighting and fridges” This can be achieved by a number of different methods without incurring any significant cost increase such as: orientation on the land; where the cool breezes will come from in summer; where the sun is located in summer and winter; exposure to elements during extreme conditions; cross breezes for natural ventilation; suitable materials for tropical climate; wide eaves or awnings; roof or ceiling insulation and ventilation; ceiling fans; light roof colours and many more factors will make a lot of difference on the level of comfortable living in your home.

That means that when it comes time to install, there are really no unforseen problems. Nice. Our brief was for outdoor integrated living. We love entertaining one or two sets of friends. Being commissioned to design a house full of cabinet-work for a colleague to a family member is always difficult. You don’t want to risk harm to relationships, so the only way I could deal with this situation was to be as professional as possible. The client brief to develop all of the cabinetry for this stunning home set with magnificent views of the city-scape and ocean to boot, meant that I had to be at the top of my game for these very discerning professional clients. It included designing an indoor-outdoor situation due to the fact that these guys entertain quite a lot, and the outdoor al fresco area actually claims as much focus

if not more than the indoor kitchen. We had developed a cantilevered teppanyaki bar with downdraught range hood system. The focus of this is sociability. To be able to sit and enjoy a meal while soaking up the ambient light as the sun sets and the city lights come on is truly stunning. It was decided very early in the process that we would use Galaxy Black natural granite for bench tops as this enhances quality and class. Champagne gloss Stylelite was chosen for all of the doors, and complements the stone to perfection. We used coloured carcass material, and coloured Intivo drawer systems to lift all of the cabinetry for the whole house to a level rarely seen. The level of finish in this house is extraordinary, the additional
time invested in the planning and development stages for this project, and again in the installation process is wholly evident in the finished product. I do recall a conundrum where the top of a downstairs bar section was going to be viewed from an upper mezzanine level, my suggestion to deal with this situation was to make a feature of it and create a Zen style garden incorporating white marble pebbles and a silk bonsai plant. This attention to detail is what makes the difference between the average house and something truly special. I tend to work with my clients through the creative process and the project evolves into the end result.

WHEN Cairns Hair Salon & Art gallery owner and stylist Marcia Ebdell-Blanch accepted an invitation to work behind the scenes at the recent Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF), the last place she expected to find herself was strutting the catwalk.
After all, that was the domain of the glamorous models who owned the main stage - a stunning, gleaming, white, 50-metre strip -- at the Central Pier, Docklands, set up to showcase one of Australia’s most celebrated fashion events. Marcia was a part of Team Schwarzkopf, hand-picked from around Australia and New Zealand to work under the direction of renowned session stylist Kenneth Stoddard, of La Boutique. And after a gruelling regime of preparing up to 60 models a day, even the most committed stylist is allowed to let her hair down. “The opportunity was there for myself and another member of the team to go up to watch the GQ Menswear show,” Marcia says. “We jumped at the chance to see the models we’d just styled in action.” “But by the time all of the 5000 ticketed guests were seated, the only way we could get to our seats was to walk straight down the middle of the catwalk in the full glare of the lights in front of a packed house. “Naturally, we tried our best to strike a pose but I’m certain no-one was convinced we were part of the show,” she laughs. This is yet another big Australian fashion show Marcia’s been involved with, having previously travelled to Brisbane for Mercedes Benz Brisbane Fashion Festival “MBBFF” In August. Marcia is a very accomplished Session Stylist with over 27 years on the International scene, from London to Paris, from Film sets to Television or Music Videos to Theatre and then there is the editorial work and of course high end Fashion events, so a return to her roots is welcomed. And while it may sound glamorous to rub shoulders with the highest echelon of Australia’s fashionistas, the reality is quite different. Under the watchful eye of Kenneth Stoddard - a veteran of the industry whose work frequently features on the cover of Vogue and Marie Claire - the pace and demands of the brief
are relentless. They tong, tease, iron, blow-dry, caress and ultimately, ensure the final ‘look’ of each of the 30 models is perfect for every show, twice a day, for eight days. “Kenneth is known to be a bit of control freak, that’s what makes him so good at what he does and ensures the Quality of work that goes out, I understand this as I am the same within my Salon on a day to day basis. I quality check and oversee constantly to keep our standards & achieve Customer satisfaction. “ So, it’s the ultimate test of your skills and time management. You need to be very experienced and knowledgeable about what has to be achieved and the time it will take to do it because the catwalk waits for noone. “Backstage in the wings before the show, you can be putting in an extension, fitting a fascinator, adjusting a head dress or applying product & dressing the hair, you have to have a quick and keen eye to scan all models fast for imperfections to correct and you literally have a few seconds with each model - and then they’re on stage. “It’s hard work and very fast paced, but also very rewarding when you see the models on the catwalk, the cameras flashing and the reaction of the crowd. It’s all a bit of a frenzy.” The bright lights and excitement of VAMFF and the cream of The Fashion Industry may seem a long way from the busy Hair & Beauty salon Marcia owns and manages at Stratford in Cairns. But in Marcia’s mind, the satisfaction of a job done well and to the client’s expectations is just the same. “It’s always amazing when that finished result comes together as you’ve visualised. Whether it’s a model on the catwalk or a client walking out of the salon with a new style or colour, it’s what drives us every day.”

We wanted to give Kirstie the opportunity to change her colour in the near Future so we opted for a Deep Conditioning Colour which we custom mixed for Kirstie to achieve our Individual Colour which just stains the Hair with pure contact pigments, this enables Kirstie to have Fun with her Colour whilst Treating the hair and smoothing the cuticle but with the option changing or making the Colour more permanent in the Future. We pre- lifted Kirstie’s roots, and coated some panels with cuticle restoring cream to treat & shield the hair to create the pastelised panels prior to using our Fabulous Fabuloso Colour Mix all through. Kirstie has very fair skin so we just evened out her skin tone and added some light mineral powder to highlight. We added some pretty Pink on the cheeks and a Punch of Pink to the Lips. We went subtle on the eyes just Lining and enhancing top & bottom with Lashes to complete the look. This gave a very girlee 60’s feel.

But there are a few memorable cases which serve as constant inspiration and reminder of her clients’ resilience and her own ability to help and empower. “To see clients, both male and female, who have been persuaded they are worthless, that their contribution as a homemaker and parent are negligible, the life they devoted to earning a living to provide for their family counts for nothing, or that physical violence they received was their fault, then go on to rebuild their lives, that is inspirational,” says Suzanne. “Sometimes they take the brave step of hope triumphing over experience to forge successful and fulfilling relationships, undertake study or build successful businesses. You’ve gotta’ love that.” Suzanne is Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist in Family Law – a major accomplishment requiring tough exams, review of previous documents filed with the Court, conduct of a mock file and mock interview and recommendations by peers. S
tudying a Bachelor of Arts as a mature-age student, Angela Blain found herself gravitating toward the law section of the book store. Her children had reached school age and she wanted to do something for herself, furthering her education at a tertiary level with 10 years of part time study while raising her family. It wasn’t long before her fascination for the legal world took hold, and Angela found herself completing a combined degree in both arts and law. “I just loved it,” Angela recalls. “Arts was terrific too but it was very ethereal, whereas law is very tangible, there’s a result at the end which I find hugely rewarding and satisfying.” Following her studies Angela completed voluntary work experience at firms across Cairns, leading to a law clerk position in 2005. She was admitted to practice in April 2006 and worked as a solicitor until 2009 when she became the first female partner of her firm. Wanting to bring her fresh and modern approach to law, Angela established her own practice in 2013, and is renowned for her experienced, efficient and affordable service. My Irrational Fear Recently, I had to confront one of my biggest fears. No, it wasn’t my fear of handling coins (so filthy!), nor my fear of a 5 metre scrub python suddenly dropping out of a tree in the Botanical Gardens and determinedly attaching itself to my leg. I am referring to my Pap Smear Fear! Yes, this ‘medical exam’ may play a key role in the prevention of cervical cancer but it doesn’t mean I have to be OK with it. In fact, I dread it. My Pre-Pap Smear anxiety usually manifests itself in, but not necessarily in this order, sweaty palms, vivid nightmares of hovering plastic beaks and latex gloves, and tension headaches. This all building to an unpleasant crescendo which is the startling premonition that I will be SOOOOO uptight for the test which will render it null and void, leaving me with no other choice than to reschedule another appointment for when I am more relaxed. Despite all this madness, I, or rather, they get the job done. This year, I’m particularly glad ‘they’ did, as my routine Pap Smear detected high-grade abnormalities. This isn’t always cause for concern but in my case, my cervix was hurtling towards, DEF CON I status (Code for Sh*t’s about to get real). Thus I
had to book in for a Colposcopy. Without over-sharing here, this is a short procedure that takes place in a gynaecologist’s office which involves an instrument that magnifies the cells of the cervix. In sum, it is a lengthier, more uncomfortable version of a Pap Test with a complimentary ‘ovaries feel’ kindly thrown in Bargain! Albeit, begrudgingly I bit the bullet and pressed forward with the procedure, in the hope that my lady bits and I could eventually enjoy some peace and tranquillity. Not so lucky. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with CIN3 abnormal changes in my cervix which is medical jargon for ‘pre-cancerous’ cells. To put it bluntly, the next likely stage after CIN3 is cervical cancer. Thus without further ado, I got back in the stirrups again (literally) and braced myself for surgery. At first, I lamented, “Why me?!” I simply couldn’t believe my luck. The girl who has a nervous breakdown at the mere mention of the word ‘Pap’, is the same girl who had to endure numerous external and internal gynaecological examinations and surgery and furthermore has been committed to endure half-yearly Pap Smears for the foreseeable future. But, then I took a step back, and I seriously considered my situation.
After not much reflection, I realised that I was on the receiving end of some seriously good luck. I am fortunate enough to live in a first-world country where I have easy access to FREE preventative health care in the form of Pap Tests and HPV vaccines, both of which have greatly lowered the incidence of cervical cancer. Moreover, I’m further grateful for the fact that my procedure was carried out promptly by compassionate and well-informed healthcare professionals in a first class hospital. Above all, I feel truly blessed that I get to live another day, unlike the 226 Australian women who died from cervical cancer in 2012. I now understand that my Pap Smear Fear is, in truth, an ‘irrational fear’…5 minutes of feeling exposed, uncomfortable and vulnerable in order to LIVE is a small price to pay. A Pap Smear isn’t going to hurt, maim or kill me but avoiding it SURE could eventuate in circumstances that might.

It is a home where kids have supervision, rules chores and a supportive environment, whilst they complete their education, training and or find a job. • Ruths Women’s Shelter: Ruth’s women’s shelter provides a secure crisis accommodation, ensuring optimum safety, guidance and support to women and children escaping domestic violence. • Young Animal Protection Society (YAPS): A foundation that rescues abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats in the Cairns and FNQ area. The animals are lovingly cared for until they find their “forever family” • FNQ hospital foundation: A charitable organization that endeavors to assist the activities and services of the Cairns Hospital and Cairns Hinterland Hospital and Health service. • Friends of Himalayan Children: A local humanitarian organization working in rural Nepalese communities and in Katmandu currently helping restore the area after the devastating earthquake.

He has been awarded many prizes including the Dobell Drawing Prize in 1999, The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize in 2002 and the Mosman Art prize in 2012. David has been teaching at the National Art School in the Drawing Department as a Visiting Lecturer for over 20 years
Faces WaterFaces in Water Classes each day include Cherry Hood demonstrating her technique of making a large scale watercolour painting of a face on paper. This is not a portrait painting workshop. It’s about making the most of the amazing feature of the medium of watercolour paint. Cherry helps each student with their individual needs. You can wipe back your whites and change any areas on this diverse surface. 1-Day Watercolour on Yupo Paper. How magical is Yupo paper? Well you will find out on this challenging but rewarding day. You will be working flat as the watercolour slips and slides across the surface. You will be shown how to manipulate the pigments into the subject of the day which will be a seascape with a close up wave crashing over the rocks with sea spray.
MEDIUM - ENCAUSTIC (Paraffin and microcrystalline wax) Produce a Body of Works This workshop will deliver skills to produce large-scale encaustic works. Students will cover the hows and whys of the production of a body of work for professional practice. Demonstrations and class exercises will be done in material application and how to apply this to develop your own body of work. Students will complete experimental material studies, draft studies for large scale and at least 3 large encaustic paintings,
of the 2002 Archibald Prize, the most prestigious painting award in Australia, with her portrait of the young pianist Simon Tedeschi. Cherry Hood has exhibited at Tim Olsen Gallery in Sydney, Heiser Gallery in Brisbane, Arc One Gallery in Melbourne, Turner Gallery in Perth and Greenaway Gallery in Adelaide. Hood has also had solo shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver and Zurich. Her works are in many private collections in Australia and overseas and many of the State Museum Galleries in Australia have collected her works. Her works are very well represented in major Corporate Collections.

In a major coup for Cairns, cultural ambassador and iconic entertainer, Mary Wilson (The Supremes) will be playing her first ever concert in Cairns as part of the Queensland Cabaret Festival. The star takes to the Cairns Civic Theatre stage on Friday 12 June 2015. As the longest reigning original member of The Supremes, Wilson recently commented that her passion for singing and performing is still burning as brightly as ever. “It’s a great thing to find what you like in life; it’s a special blessing. When I was 12-and-a-half or 13 years old, I fell in love with singing and knew I never wanted to do anything else. Everything else that’s come along since then—my books, being a lecturer—it’s all just a part of what I do. Fifty-some years later, I still haven’t left the stage.”

Up Close will feature hits by The Supremes such as “My World Is Empty Without You”, as well as Wilson’s own impeccable versions of classics such as “New York State of Mind”, “I Am Changing” and “Both Sides Now”.
The Supremes were the most successful vocal group in American history, with twelve #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, countless international tours and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band also received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Following Wilson’s own departure in 1977, The Supremes disbanded, she has since released three solo albums, five singles and two best-selling autobiographies, Dreamgirl: My Life As a Supreme, and Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together. Wilson is also a musicians’ rights activist, musical theatre performer and organiser of various museum displays of The Supremes’ famed costumes. Not one to sit idly, Ms. Wilson has spread the Supremes’ legacy on the world stage to international museums with a touring exhibit entitled, “The Story of the Supremes from the Mary Wilson Gown Collection,” featuring their showstopping gowns and coveted memorabilia. The gowns were on exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and will be touring The United Kingdom before going on to Europe for another two years. Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the Supremes when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1994, the Supremes received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 1998, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Ms. Wilson has toured the globe as a performer and continues to travel as advocate on behalf of social and civic issues. As a Supreme, she performed for Britain’s Queen Mother and the future King of Sweden and other international audiences. However, Ms. Wilson’s global stature grew after former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell named her one of nine cultural ambassadors in 2003. In November 2004, she was one of the featured performers to headline the United Nations’ “World AIDS Day” concert at St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York City. She later returned to the United Nations Building to lecture about the poverty, hunger and destruction she witnessed during her trips. The Cairns Chamber of Commerce is excited to let the business community of Cairns know of our China Business Delegation that will see delegates from local businesses on mission in Guangzhou from the 10-15 June 2015. The Chamber will be represented on this delegation with businesses in the food and ingredient industry as well as those interested in increasing business opportunities in China. This particular delegation will feature participation in the 2015 Guangzhou International Food & Ingredient Fair. The Guangzhou International Food & Ingredients Fair, hosted by the China Council of the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and Guangzhou Municipal Government, organised by CCPIT Guangzhou Committee, is the most internationalised food exhibition in South China. With a high participation of domestic and foreign exhibitors, the fair has attracted buyers from various countries from across the world. It is highly praised for its precise business matchmaking between exhibitors and buyers, comprehensive services and boost for the development of the food industry. During the 2014 four day exhibition, the fair attracted 300,000 visitors in total with 48,000 of them being professional buyers. One of the things that I have noticed in my coaching career is that often people don’t have any clarity around what they want to achieve. Many of us are so caught up with the daily demands of life, that we haven’t really taken the time to ask ourselves; “What is it that I really want?” Achieving success is about more than just setting a vague goal or making a new year’s resolution, it takes commitment and focus, it takes drive, motivation and determination. There are some important key principals to learn and implement to develop those attributes and achieve success. And, these key principals all begin with knowing your outcome clearly and allowing yourself time to explore this. What is it that you really want? What does that picture look like? • Set a goal – When you use an effective goal setting model to set a deadline it gets
you off the starting line, because you begin to see the steps. I have found the SMART model to be the most highly effective. • Visualise it – No one ever achieved anything without first seeing it in their minds eye. Use this strategy consciously everyday and visualise yourself achieving your goals, even create a vision board. • Talk about it – many people decide on what they want and spend most of their time talking about what they don’t want, the problems of everyday life. Be aware of your focus and talk about what you feel happy about, what you do want and your goals. Finally and essentially, commit to taking action every single day to achieve your goals, even if it’s just a small step. When you do this you will notice that you develop momentum and increase focus, create those feelings of motivation and determination and that driving force that is key to achieving success!

With the 2015 financial year drawing to a close it’s that time of year when we should consider our tax exposure and how to reduce this where possible We caught up with Miriam Eagle and Chris Ganfield at Eagle Accounting to get some tax and business tips and to see what is happening in their world…. Chris explains that they are busy this time of year with tax planning and advising clients regarding the impacts of the recent federal budget “One of the exciting things coming out of the budget is not only the immediate deduction for assets purchased costing less than $20,000, but also the ability for small business entities (SBE’s) to write off their pre-existing general asset depreciation pools if the written down value is less than $20,000. This concession has been somewhat overlooked, however will probably impact more business taxpayers because it doesn’t require a cash outlay” Many people will also be investing some money into superannuation and this is a simple way to save tax. The deduction is subject to caps (or maximum limits) and the amount you can contribute depends on your age and work status, so it is best to check with your accountant before you use this strategy.
