n behalf of the Hong Kong Rugby Union, I am delighted to welcome international and local fans to the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2017, the world’s best rugby sevens tournament. Once again Hong Kong is the largest event on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series as we welcome 40 of the world’s premier men’s and women’s international sevens teams across three compelling tournaments in 2017. I am particularly proud that – alongside the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens and the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier – we are also hosting the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series Qualifier. Hosting this international tournament is the ideal way to mark the 20th staging of our own pioneering Hong Kong Women’s Sevens tournament. We are further commemorating this milestone by including the semi-finals in the women’s matches to be played alongside the final inside the pulsating Hong Kong Stadium on Friday. For the expected 120,000 fans attending the Sevens, three days of world-class rugby are seamlessly interwoven with weeks of revelry and entertainment in the build-up as the HKRU continues to extend the reach of this international event throughout the community. Details of all that’s going on in are the pages of this guide, and we thank the publishers for helping us promote the entire calendar of activities that have become famous as HKSEVENS Rugby Week. As always, the Hong Kong Sevens is a key driver in growing and building awareness of rugby across our community and helps fund our development programmes that introduce the benefits and values of rugby to thousands of young people each year. A
s if the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens weren’t always exciting enough, this year’s tournament has the makings of a classic as the formbook gets a shake-up. South Africa dominated the early season on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and hold the top spot. But England – who haven’t taken the Hong Kong Cup home since 2006 – are making a fine showing in 2017, including turning the Blitzbokke over in the previous round in Vancouver, to win the Cup 19-7 and close the gap in the standings to a gettable 23 points with four rounds to go. So where are perennial Hong Kong finishers Fiji and New Zealand – each under new management since the Fijians followed victory here last year with a mighty Gold at the firstever Olympic Sevens competition in Rio? Both are yet to win in this year’s Series but who would write off the two teams that have a near stranglehold on success at So Kon Po over the last decade? And so the beating heart of sevens rugby returns to the Hong Kong Stadium – and to even more venues around town. The weekend sees 28 teams primed for the fray, with surprises a distinct possibility as talent like the United States and Germany looks to upset the old order in their respective competitions. The hometown heroes will be out in the World Rugby Sevens Series qualifier tournament – under the guidance of new head coach Paul John, who has taken over from Gareth Baber, now guiding champions Fiji. Hong Kong’s women are eagerly eyeing the chance to play in front of the Stadium crowd. There’s more hope than ever of that this year as Hong Kong hosts the 12-team World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series Qualifier, with both the semifinals and the final being played at the Stadium. Building on recent years' success, the Cathay Pacific/HSBC
Hong Kong Sevens is taking Hong Kong's biggest party to the people. Across the weekend at the Stadium, there’ll be performances from the legendary ska band Madness and the acclaimed From the Jam outfit. The North Stand will host tribute bands rocking their way through favourites from The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Creedence Clearwater Revival – among others. Returning to Central bigger than ever and throughout event week, HKSEVENS Central has transformed Chater Garden into a mini Hong Kong Stadium, complete with pitch, skills games and competitions, official merchandise booths – and appearances from some of the superstars of the game. HKSEVENS Central will also host the Sevens in the City viewing party where fans will be treated to continuous real-time coverage from the main event over the weekend. “This week-long party is one of many initiatives designed to share the Sevens with the whole community. We want people all over Hong Kong – and around the world, to feel part of this globally renowned event, and to enjoy it just like those inside the Stadium,” said Robbie McRobbie, Deputy CEO of the HKRU. This year Causeway Bay is also getting in on the act with the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens FanWalk turning the popular Lee Gardens shopping centre into a weekend-long rugby-themed party. And all over town, the new Cathay Pacific/HBSC Hong Kong Sevens Bars & Restaurants Club initiative has lined up over 100 bars and restaurants with special discounts and deals for rugby fans. he 42nd annual Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens reconfirms its status as the sevens tournament ‘Where the World Comes to Play’. With 40 teams – 16 in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series competition, 12 teams contesting the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifiers and a further 12 teams participating in the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series Qualifier, Hong Kong will once again welcome the rugby world in April. The Series competition will feature the 15 core teams on the Series – those that compete at all ten legs worldwide, along with South Korea, invited by World Rugby as the 16th participant team in the competition in 2017. The teams were drawn into four pools of four teams each with the top seeds determined by their results at the sixth leg of the Series in Vancouver in March. After the initial group stages of round-robin pool play the knockout phases will start as the teams chase four different trophies: The Cup for the overall winner, the Plate (fifth-best team overall), the Bowl (ninth-best overall team) and the Shield (13th-best overall team). So, for whom will you be rooting this year?

POOL A ／A組 England 英格蘭 After a surprise silver medal run for Team GB at the Rio Olympics, England have found a new lease on their sevens life. They have won two of the six tournaments to date on the Series – including the last event in Vancouver last month, and reached the final in a third, bringing them within striking distance of South Africa at the top of the table ahead of the Hong Kong event, where they can expect some vociferous support from the fans. Australia 澳洲 After a slight dip in form early in the season, falling to 11th and 10th place finishes in Cape Town and Wellington, the Aussies bounced back high at their home event in Sydney where they just missed out on the bronze medal. Since then, they have maintained a consistent strike rate, finishing no worse than seventh. Samoa 薩摩亞 Long one of the toughest physical competitors in world sevens rugby, the Samoans have now added the game’s finest tactician to their mix after luring long-time New Zealand coach Sir Gordon Tietjens after the Rio Olympics. South Korea 韓國 Invited by World Rugby to round out the core Series competition, one can be sure that South Korea are here to do more than just make up the numbers. With a veteran squad, the South Koreans could surpise. POOL B ／B組 South Africa 南非 South Africa is in good form, winning four of the six series titles this season and reaching the final in the other two events. Their consistency belies their power and pace with flyer Seabelo Senatla leading all try-scorers this year with 32 across six tournaments. Canada 加拿大 Consistency has been the Canadian’s Achilles heel in the 2016/17 season with half of the tournaments they’ve played in to date yielding top eight finishes – while the other half have seen them finish in the bottom three. France 法國 Eleventh-placed France will be seeking to end a downward spiral of sorts in Hong Kong. After starting the year reasonably well with three top-ten finishes, France’s points totals have declined in each of the last three tournaments. They hit their nadir in Vancouver, finishing alongside Russia tied for 15th place, mustering only one point. Since then, changes have been rung with six players pursuing rugby fame – and more importantly fortune – overseas since last June's Games. The USA reached the Cup final at their home tournament in Las Vegas before finishing fourth in Vancouver. The results in Canada put them at the top of a very competitive Pool D but with eyes on going one step further on Sevens Sunday in the Stadium. Both teams are now fighting neck and neck to avoid relegation back to the Qualifying stakes. So far Russia have the edge, 6 points, ahead of Japan. Hong Kong will be a pivotal opportunity for Russia to increase their breathing space from an easier pool than Japan. The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens will once again host the battle for promotion to next season’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier. Asian sevens champions and hosts Hong Kong will be back for another tilt after reaching the cup final last year, where they missed out in a heartbreaker to Japan, 24-14. While there’s no Japan for Hong Kong to contend with this year, the field of 12 teams – two each from World Rugby’s six regions – comes bristling with talent, and form. As statements of intent go, Germany’s return – after 24 years – in 2016 was impressive. The Germans drew with the heavily fancied Zimbabwe 14-14 before turning Hong Kong over 12-5 on the first day. Heading into this year’s tournament, the Germans might not yet have a professional set-up but their attitude is exactly that professional. “[Last year] it was special for us being in Hong Kong but beating them wasn’t any different from playing the other teams,” says Germany’s director of rugby, Manuel Wilhelm. “We have the utmost respect for all teams involved in this wonderful competition and we just feel honoured to be part of such a wonderful and traditional tournament.” A fourth-placing in the European Grand Prix behind Russia, France and Spain showed the Germans are continuing to build a powerful squad. Debutants Uganda will be hoping to be this year’s surprise package after downing Namibia 38-19 in the final of the Rugby Africa Men's Sevens Championships last September. They also beat Japan when they were invited to play in the World Series event at December’s Dubai Sevens - their first-ever Series victory. “Hong Kong is the Mecca of Sevens and Ugandan fans are well aware of the tournament. It will be a baptism of fire for us, but we have been training very hard,” was Uganda coach Tolbert Ondanga’s reaction to qualifying. Chile will be another team to watch this weekend as they enter their third successive World Series tournament in Hong Kong after finishing tied-11th on their most recent outing in Vancouver, ahead of four Series regulars and level with Kenya. They come to Hong Kong all the better for the experience – and keener than ever to make sure they can line up for a full season at the very top of the game if they win the qualifying tournament here.

Marking its 20th year, Hong Kong’s venerable women’s sevens tournament has been granted World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series qualifier status in 2017. Twelve teams will contest the tournament at So Kon Po across from the Hong Kong Stadium on Thursday and Friday, 6-7 April. Then, for the first time, the two semi-finals will join the final in front the almighty Stadium crowd on Friday afternoon. The 12 teams from the six World Rugby regions are South Africa and Kenya (Africa), Jamaica (Americas North), Argentina and Colombia (Americas South), Japan, China and hosts Hong Kong (Asia), Belgium, Italy and The Netherlands (Europe) and Papua New Guinea (Oceania). The Hong Kong debuts of Belgium, Colombia, Italy and Jamaica mean that 41 nations will have participated in the international women’s sevens tournament over these two decades. The tournament winner will be promoted to the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in 2017/18, replacing the bottom-placed team on the series after the final event in Clermont-Ferrand, France in June.

The GFI HKFC 10s, which started in 1986 as a social rugby tournament to celebrate the centenary of the Hong Kong Football Club, has progressed to 10,000 spectators over two days of action-packed competition with live international coverage. Attracting famous touring teams and players from around the globe, the GFI HKFC 10s provides spectators with a close-up view of the action. This year, Penguins will be defending their 2017 title with a number of strong teams - including Samurai, Pacific Dragons and YCAC - back to compete.

RugbyFest has been visited by teams from all over the world and from every continent! Now in its 16th year, RugbyFest will host men's and ladies teams. Pool matches are played throughout the day, culminating in the Finals from 5pm. Hong Kong will take a sixth run at promotion to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in the World Rugby Sevens Series Qualifier at the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. The defending Asia Rugby Sevens champions will face off against Chile, Sri Lanka and Namibia in Pool F of the tournament. They made a strong run to the final last year with 14 minutes standing between the hometown heroes and a permanent spot on the Series, but regional rivals Japan dashed their hopes, 24-14. Complicating matters in 2017 is the appointment of a new coach in former Wales Sevens supremo Paul John who only joined the team in March. John is aware of the challenge ahead, saying, “These countries [in the Qualifier] are getting stronger and stronger. Chile have had a very good two weeks on the World Series and will be playing their third tournament on the trot. “It is a good challenge for us and it’s always exciting to have the opportunity to play against quality opposition,” said John. Outside of the Pool the competition gets even stiffer with Papua New Guinea another side to have experience on this year’s World Series, while Germany (who upended Hong Kong on day one last year) are returning even stronger. Spain, who top Pool G, finished higher than Germany in Europe in the qualifying and are only two seasons removed from being a core team on the Series. So the challenge gets tougher, but so do the hosts. “We’re looking good in training and looking forward to the Sevens. For us, it’s about performing consistently over the tournament but our guys are playing well and I think it’s going to be a good tournament,” said Sevens captain Max Woodward.
The Hong Kong Women’s Sevens squad has been presented with an ideal opportunity to qualify for the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series with the hosting of the international qualifier in Hong Kong this year. The winner of the qualifier will replace the bottom-placed finisher after the conclusion of the Women’s World Series this summer. The hosting of this prestigious World Rugby tournament is the ideal way to mark the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens, the world’s longest-running international women’s sevens competition. The increased prize on offer has also drawn the interest of several of the world’s top women’s sevens outfits. The 12-team tournament will feature two competitors from the 2016 Rio Olympics in Colombia, who are making their Hong Kong debut, and Japan. Jamaica, Belgium and Italy are also taking part, raising the number of countries that have played in the Women’s sevens to 41 over the past two decades. Hong Kong are in Pool B along with Argentina, Kenya and Belgium. The local women have battled both Argentina and Kenya before but Belgium remain an unknown – and therefore dangerous – quantity. But the lure of making a first appearance inside the Hong Kong Stadium during the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens will drive Hong Kong forward. “The quality of the teams is great and the opportunity to contest the qualifier at home is all that you could ask for as a coach. It’s added pressure, of course, but also added excitement,” said Hong Kong coach Anna Richards, a former New Zealand Black Fern and a member of the World Rugby Hall of Fame. “Hong Kong is iconic for Sevens, so hosting the women’s qualifier here is great for the development of the game. The more women’s events that can be played alongside the men’s tournaments the better,” Richards added.

Rugby School in the United Kingdom, the birthplace of the game, is marking its 450th anniversary in 2017. As part of the school’s celebrations, a special rugby ball is being passed around the world this year. The global campaign will see its alumni – dubbed Old Rugbeians – young and old, both boys and girls – passing the ball at each of 450 major locations around the world, including on every continent, even Antarctica. On its first stop in Asia on this 450th anniversary world tour, the Rugby School ball will visit Hong Kong during the week of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens 2017. Twenty-five of the passes will be made in Hong Kong. The ball will be in Hong Kong from Wednesday, 29 March to Sunday, 9 April with the passes staged in some of Hong Kong’s most iconic destinations including the Peak, Man Mo Temple, the Star Ferry, Dragon’s Back, Happy Valley Racecourse, among others. Naturally, the most anticipated pass will take place during the March Past at the Hong Kong Sevens on Saturday, 8 April. Peter Green, Headmaster of Rugby School, will travel to Hong Kong to mark the occasion and will visit the Sevens. “The enthusiasm and support for the Global Pass from Old Rugbeians has been fantastic and such a significant part of our 450th celebrations. To be in Hong Kong and witness the pass at the iconic Sevens tournament will be one of my personal highlights of our event-packed anniversary year.” said Peter Green. The special 450th anniversary ball was made by Gilbert and includes a GPS tracker to follow the ball’s global process. The ball has visited other iconic rugby destinations including Twickenham in England, Murrayfield the home of Scottish rugby and Melrose, site of one of the world’s longest running sevens tournaments. The ball has also been passed at Stonehenge, at the Giant’s Causeway and in Tipperary in Ireland, in Florence, Italy, Red Square in Moscow, and at the Louvre and Eiffel Tower in Paris.

KICK-OFF CONCERT 國泰航空/匯豐香港 國際七人欖球賽2017前奏音樂會 Setting the scene for the weekend of world-class sport and entertainment, the 2017 Cathay Pacific/HSBC HKSEVENS Kick-off Concert, on Thursday 6 April, rocks to the sound of two giants of the 1980s. Headlining the traditional pre-Sevens party are effervescent British ska pioneers Madness, with hits like ‘House of Fun’, ‘Baggy Trousers’ and ‘Our House’, and still drawing critical acclaim for their more recent sounds. Also on stage at the HKSEVENS Kick-off Concert are From The Jam, powered by original Jam bassist Bruce Foxton, along with guitarist/vocalist Russell Hastings, bringing back the ferocious sound that the band unleashed when they exploded on to the UK punk scene in 1977. Sevens fans can expect to be treated to classic Jam hits such as ‘Going Underground’, ‘Town Called Malice’ and ‘The Modern World’. ll Asian cuisines are represented here and in abundance. Japanese food is highly popular with locals, from chain sushi outlets to elegant Japanese dining. The Grand Plaza in Mongkok has a collection of Japanese restaurants serving different styles. Korean food is also good. Little Korean in Tsim Sha Tsui near Kimberley Road has throngs of authentic Korean restaurants worth exploring. Malaysian food also has a large fan base, and Café Malacca at the Hotel Jen in Western District serves arguably the best Malaysian food in town. For Thai food, the Chili Club in Wanchai on Lockhart Road is a long-time favourite and perfect for rugby fans looking for hearty chow near the bars. The Namo Avant Thai Restaurant at Alfresco Lane in East Tsim Sha Tsui serves trendy Thai dishes amidst a relaxed setting. For lovers of Indian food, the selection is also plentiful; Bombay Dreams is one of the best-known.

Vertical Mall 垂直式商場 “Necessity is the mother of invention’, that ageless homily is never more true than for this city’s plethora of high-rise “vertical malls” – thanks to exorbitant prices and small lot sizes. A vertical shopping mall, some with 15 storeys, can be architecturally stunning as it usually features a tall and spacious atrium and eccentric quilted escalators network for access to higher floors. Times Square at Causeway Bay is probably the granddaddy of them all. For trendier versions, try visiting Hysan Place (Causeway Bay), iSQUARE (Tsim Sha Tsui), or Langham Place (Mongkok). Dragon’s Back 龍脊 Hong Kong is cross-crossed by hiking trails, most of which are located in country parks. One of the best-known and probably the most scenic is the Dragon’s Back – a series of mountain ridges in southeastern Hong Kong Island, stretching from Chai Wan to the Shek O and Big Wave beaches. The hike is quite moderate and suitable for most abilities, and once you reach the ridge after a level hike and short ascent, the spectacular views of the South China Sea on either side and the green hills beyond await. An afternoon here never disappoints. Take Bus number 9 from Shau Kei Wan and get off at the Cape Collinson stop near Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution and walk up a short distance to the connecting Hong Kong Trail.
