FALL 2022

Welcome to Our Dream House! Dream House is the newest sculpture to join the public art collection. It is in the historic Cedar Falls Downtown District. Situated at River Place Plaza at 2nd and State Streets, this artwork serves as a landmark where elements of nature and built environments meet. Commissioned by the Cedar Falls Public Art Committee, the eleven foot high white house and cloudshaped sculpture provides a backdrop to our community’s social events, live concerts, family gatherings, and more. New York based artist, Sujin Lim, who designed it says the work “invites people upstairs leading to the plaza from downtown Cedar Falls. Once there, they will be pleasantly surprised to find a small bench at the back. The grass lawn symbolizes the small front yard of a house that invites people to sit and relax. The inspiration of the place reflects the warmth and exuberance that characterized Kristine Martinson’s life. I’m excited that the people of Cedar Falls can sit on the bench and enjoy looking out over the river and landscape at this site. I hope the project will be a fresh and unique artistic aspect of the visual fabric of Cedar Falls.” For more information on the artist and to view her other public art, visit www.sujinlim.net. Funding for Dream House was made possible by major contributions from the family and friends of Kristine Martinson and the Cedar Falls Public Art Committee.

During the summer of 2022, the UNI Public Art Incubator fabricated Lim’s design using sheets of aluminum that were welded and finished by the team. With assistance from Cedar Falls Public Works, UNI Public Art Incubator Artist Assistants installed the sculpture on August 5. Taylor Sullivan was one of the Artist Assistants, who is also a student in the BFA program majoring in Performance Art. She reflects on her experience during the installation of Dream House stating, “As a Cedar Falls native, I feel honored to have been able to fabricate this sculpture for my hometown. Seeing Dream House come to life has been more than a rewarding experience, it truly makes me emotional to see the community admire it. Having our crew of predominantly women fabricate it for her was nothing short of inspiring, especially in a male-dominated field like sculpture. Accomplishing such a large project like this in such a short amount of time has only encouraged me to continue advancing in my sculpture practice.” We invite the community to interact with Dream House! Tag us on socials using #DreamHouse and join us in sharing Kristine Martinson’s motto to have your #BestDayEver! Since 1999, the Public Art Committee has implemented public art projects throughout Cedar Falls. Before Dream House, the most recent commissioned artwork is Fence Roadway by artist Gillian Christy in 2021. The sculpture is located at City Hall and is dedicated to the memory of Mayor Jon Crews. The collection continues to grow with the upcoming addition of three original murals. These selected designs will be installed this fall on the underpass wall of the Main Street Bridge, by the intersection of Main Street and East First Street in Cedar Falls.
