There is something magical about experiencing a story for the first time as a child, and something just as special about returning to it as an adult! Our audiences have always shown us how much they treasure these moments of wonder, and few stories capture that spirit like The Wizard of Oz. From the unforgettable journey down the Yellow Brick Road to the enduring friendships and courage we celebrate along the way, this is a story that delights, inspires, and brings families together.
The Citadel has a long history of welcoming young audiences and creating shared theatre experiences for families. Seeing the joy on a child’s face during a favourite scene, hearing laughter ripple through the audience, and witnessing multiple generations experiencing the magic together is at the heart of everything we do! Nostalgia and discovery meet on our stage, whether it’s a first visit to the Emerald City or a return to a story that shaped a childhood.

Jessie & Daryl
There is truly “no place like home,” and the Citadel has always been a home for stories. We open our doors to Dorothy and her friends, inviting you to step inside, feel the wonder, and be swept away by the adventure. We also encourage you to explore our recently announced 2026/27 Season, From Here to Everywhere, filled with stories that will transport you from your seat and spark imagination and connection for audiences of all ages.
Thank you for joining us. Your presence brings the magic to life, and we are thrilled to share this adventure with you!

Daryl Cloran Jessie van Rijn Artistic Director Executive Director
At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you.
We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan - Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. We express deep gratitude for the knowledge that has long nurtured these lands.
Treaty No. 6 was created with the intention of fostering harmonious co-existence. The Citadel Theatre recognizes our role and responsibility in being an active participant in reconciliation. We commit to this work through the sharing of resources, ongoing training, the inclusion of Indigenous stories, histories, and experiences in our programming, and by fostering meaningful relationships with the community.
In the spirit of reciprocity and respect, we seek to uphold the original intent of the Treaty and strive to create a shared narrative that honors our responsibility to this land and to each other.

The last line of the movie, The Wizard of Oz, has become as famous as the movie itself. “There’s no place like home” has been etched in the hearts of so many generations of young and old alike, since the moment it was uttered by the legendary Judy Garland in 1939. But what does “home” mean to us today? Originally, on the surface at least, it sits as a lovely sentiment, reminding us of family and our own humble beginnings. Keeping in mind that the film version of this story was created in between the World Wars era in America, there was probably also a subconscious nod to the idea of keeping young girls content where they were and curb a desire to be independent at a time when it was more accepted that women maintain more conventional gender roles at home.
But today, when gender self-identity, work-place methodologies and the costs of living are shifting drastically, it seems that so many young people (and not so young people) are redefining themselves in terms of professional/personal self-expression and the quality of life they want to have. So who you are inside and the friends you surround yourself with, become as important as where and how you live.
What seems to have happened is that the new ideal for “home” has become mental/ emotional/psychological, rather than geographic or dwelling-centric. Finding a sense of ease, acceptance, and understanding of our own needs, feelings, and desires is the new “home” base. And if we can find that, then we can be at home anywhere.
In the Kansas scenes in The Wizard of Oz, there are several references to Dorothy finding or getting into trouble. She seems to feel a lack of safety inside and outside. Through her journey, she has to find her equilibrium. She finds out she can defend herself and defend her loved ones. In the big, overwhelming world of Oz, she finds her strength and independence and with each triumph, she realizes the world isn’t that scary if you know what you stand for. She finds her own inner “home”. And that, she can take with her everywhere. And isn’t that what we all want? To feel at home anywhere, including Over the Rainbow.

Young people are a vital part of the Citadel Theatre and we’re passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Students Club gives local junior and senior high school students an inside look at the world of professional theatre. It isn’t just about seeing showsStudents Club is about community, conversation, and celebrating live theatre in Edmonton. Before select Mainstage performances, students take part in an engaging and interactive session led by one of Edmonton’s talented theatre artists. Then, after the curtain falls, they stick around for a lively talkback with members of the cast and crew – diving into the stories behind the scenes and learning about what it really takes to bring a production to life.
In a highly technical show like The Wizard of Oz, Production Managers (PMs) are essential to helping to coordinate the onstage magic while keeping the cast and crew safe. For this Students Club workshop, we’ll chat with local PM Chris dela Cruz and learn about how PMs navigate each element of a show.
Chris has acted as Technical Director, Production Manager, Designer, House Technician and whatever else anyone has needed to get their play or festivals up around Edmonton the last 15 years. He’s had the pleasure of working with Theatre Network, L’UniTheatre, Edmonton Fringe, Rapid Fire Theatre, Northern Light Theatre, SkirtsAfire and many others. He’s spent the last six years as the Theatre Technician of the Maclab Theatre at Lillian Osborne High School.

THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS IN THE CREATION OF THEATRE AT THE CITADEL:
THE HOLE FAMILY • THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE FUND
MACLAB DEVELOPMENT GROUP • THE JOHN AND BARBARA POOLE FAMILY FUND
THE JOSEPH H. SHOCTOR FUND
DR. JOSEPH H. SHOCTOR, 1922-2001
EXECUTIVE PRODUCER AND FOUNDER OF THE CITADEL THEATRE
JOE’S VISION brought professional theatre to Edmonton
JOE’S DREAM built the Citadel Theatre
JOE’S SPIRIT continues to inspire the theatre we create today
JOE’S LEGACY lives on through a generous gift to the Citadel from his estate
On the Citadel’s 30th Anniversary, a gift was made by the Company of Harry Hole, James F. Hole, Ralph K. Hole and Robert W. Hole on behalf of the Hole family — in honour of their late father, Henry Hole. The Citadel Theatre is proud to honour Henry Hole’s integrity, compassion and leadership in the dedication of this complex to his memory.

Accessible Performances

As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary Season, we are proud to present a special feature in each program highlighting the rich history, unforgettable moments, and remarkable people who have shaped The Citadel Theatre.
As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary Season, it feels especially fitting to look upward, quite literally. One of theatre’s most enduring feats is the illusion of flight: the moment when an actor lifts from the stage and glides through the air, inviting audiences to believe, if only for a moment, that gravity has loosened its grip. In The Wizard of Oz, that magic returns to the Shoctor Theatre as witches soar, monkeys take flight, and a wizard rises skyward, transforming a beloved story into a living dream. What makes these moments so powerful is not just the visual thrill, but the trust between artists, technicians, and the audience. It is an unspoken agreement to believe in the impossible together.
Behind every graceful aerial moment is a remarkable feat of engineering. The Shoctor Theatre is equipped with a sophisticated counterweight fly system, a carefully balanced arrangement of battens, arbors, and weights. Whatever weight is placed onstage, whether scenery or a flying actor, must be precisely counterbalanced, allowing fly operators to move substantial weights smoothly and safely. While some theatres rely on fully automated systems, the Shoctor’s manual system thrives on teamwork, strength, and coordination. Multiple operators work together to control vertical and horizontal movement, coordinating closely with aerial choreography and musical cues. This flexibility is a testament to the versatility and precision of the system. It is a dance of its own, performed high above the stage and largely out of sight.

Actor safety is at the heart of every flying sequence. Specialized harnesses, ranging from waist supports to full-body designs, are worn discreetly beneath costumes, with secure access points at the hips or back. Extensive rehearsal allows performers to move naturally while suspended, building strength, confidence, and grace. It is a blend of art and technology that makes audiences forget the mechanics entirely and simply marvel.
With generous support from The City of Edmonton’s Downtown Vibrancy Fund, we have been able to share the stories behind the stories throughout our 60 th Anniversary Season. This investment in how we connect with audiences has helped illuminate the artistry, innovation, and collaboration that define productions like The Wizard of Oz. As we look ahead, we invite you to join us for our newly announced 2026/27 Season, where bold storytelling and theatrical magic will continue to take flight in the Shoctor Theatre.

THANK YOU! WE EXTEND OUR HEARTFELT THANKS to all our donors, whose generosity plays a crucial role in ensuring our community has the opportunity to experience performing arts. Our donors have a profound and lasting impact on the quality, accessibility, and relevance of the Citadel’s productions, facility, and educational offerings.

The Stollery is the most specialized children’s hospital in Western Canada — but the only one of its kind without a stand-alone space built just for kids. That’s about to change. You can help.
