WELCOME TO THE CITADEL

One of the most magical qualities of theatre is the ability to imagine, “What if...” Playwright Nick Green has done just that in Casey and Diana by taking an important historical moment and imagining what it might have truly been like. How were individuals personally impacted by this iconic moment? Nick has done an incredible job of creating a beautiful, intimate look at the personal impact of a moment in time. Casey and Diana is a touching, funny and very important Canadian play, and it is not surprising that it has been produced across the country since its premiere at the Stratford Festival in 2023.

We are proud to present an Albertan co-production of this beautiful Canadian play. Our thanks to Alberta Theatre Projects (Calgary) for being such great partners. And our congratulations to all of the incredible Albertan artists who have brought this production to life with such care and artistry.

We have recently announced our 2026/27 Season and it is filled with fantastic plays and musicals that we can’t wait to share with you.

We hope you’ll join us for the whole season so we can continue to imagine “What if...” together!

PS - Please visit the Canadian AIDS Memorial Quilt displayed on our digital Lightwall in the Maclab Theatre lobby during the run. The Quilt serves as a living memory of the almost 25,000 Canadians who have died of AIDS-related causes and reminds us of the daily struggle of the 75,000 Canadians who are living with HIV today. We are proud to be able to share it with our community during the run of Casey and Diana.

At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you.

We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan - Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. We express deep gratitude for the knowledge that has long nurtured these lands.

Treaty No. 6 was created with the intention of fostering harmonious co-existence. The Citadel Theatre recognizes our role and responsibility in being an active participant in reconciliation. We commit to this work through the sharing of resources, ongoing training, the inclusion of Indigenous stories, histories, and experiences in our programming, and by fostering meaningful relationships with the community.

In the spirit of reciprocity and respect, we seek to uphold the original intent of the Treaty and strive to create a shared narrative that honors our responsibility to this land and to each other.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Every once in a while, if you are very lucky, a play lands in your lap that feels too good to be true. Casey and Diana is one of those gifts. This play is special. I say that not only as a queer artist committed to LGBTQ2S+ storytelling, but as a theatre nerd who knows when a script is doing something rare. Its beating heart is magic, humanity, and resistance. At a time when the world feels fractured, when othering and rejection are often loud and unapologetic, Nick Green offers us a story rooted in radical compassion. Not as an abstract ideal, but as a lived, embodied practice. As touch. As presence. As a Princess.

The people who lived and died at Casey House were more than patients. They were artists, lovers, jokers, caregivers, rebels, and friends. They were also people living with AIDS. Many endured not only the physical devastation of the disease, but the cruelty of social abandonment - by families, workplaces, churches, and healthcare systems. Dying a social death before the physical one, and more often than not, left to suffer alone in their rooms, dirty, hungry, and abandoned.

Casey House stood in direct opposition to that trajectory. Founded by June Callwood as a place for “a good death”, or, as she so beautifully put it, a “velvet experience”, it was a radical experiment in dignity. Nurses, doctors, volunteers, and residents formed a community that refused to look away. They laughed. They raged. They sewed quilts in remembrance.

Princess Diana’s visit to Casey House became a symbol of what it looks like to refuse dehumanization. Her willingness to touch, to sit, to listen, without fear, challenged a narrative that treated people with AIDS as untouchable. But this play is careful not to make Diana the sole hero. Instead, it places her within a constellation of everyday bravery: the healthcare workers who showed up day after day, the volunteers who held hands through the night, the residents who met death with wit, anger, grace, and humour.

Just as the people involved in this production (a full team of Alberta based queer and trans artists and allies) are dealing with what’s happening now.

It’s impossible not to look around our present moment and recognize the echoes of the past: who is being dehumanized, and who is willing to challenge that narrative - to insist that everyone deserves to feel safe, to have a home, to move through the world with dignity… even when using the washroom.

Casey and Diana asks what it means to recognize one another’s humanity in times of fear, and it calls on us to resist indifference in all its forms. As June Callwood so powerfully said, “Great consideration for one another, that’s what’s going to save the world.” This play is part of that resistance.

Artistically this play is a gift, one that will mark a place in time for my career and everyone that worked on it, but for those that are fortunate enough to witness it, I hope it acts as a catalyst to inspire courage within ourselves to choose compassion over fear, to see one another fully, and to meet this moment in history with tenderness, resolve, and love.

PLAYWRIGHT NOTES

I’ve had the honour of seeing Casey and Diana produced at a number of amazing theatres now, but The Citadel is a special one for me. I lived in Edmonton from 2003-2009, and it was a very special time in my life. Trying to capture my feelings into something that will fit in a program is rather hard, but I’ve narrowed it down to 7 things:

1. Edmonton is where I’ve been the most inspired, free, and connected to community in my entire life, and while I don’t miss the winters or the politics, I sure as hell miss the theatre community.

2. I spent a fair amount of time feeling lonely, nervous, and at times unsafe as a queer man living in Edmonton. Ninety-five percent of the people who supported me emotionally during that time were women; friends, mothers, teachers, chosen family. I’ll never forget that.

3. I’d like to thank Fort Edmonton Park for taking a chance on a waiter at Johnson’s Cafe and allowing me to write period plays and stage them in historical buildings as a part of a slapdash dinner theatre series that lasted three years and saw the production of twelve new plays and musicals by me.

4. I’d like to apologize to the audiences who spent their hard-earned money on the aforementioned plays and musicals. The writing was… not good.

5. The Citadel Theatre played a pivotal role in my development as a theatre artist. As a BFA student, I remember sitting in the back of the Maclab in absolute awe of some of the best theatre I’ve seen to date, dreaming of one day being a part of the magic. The Citadel is a very special company that supports Canadian playwrights in ways that are exceptional in the Canadian theatre landscape. But you already know that… it’s why you’re here reading this program. Well done.

6. In 2005, I submitted a short play to Darrin Hagen’s Loud & Queer Cabaret, and he accepted it. That led to another piece, this time starring Trevor Schmidt, which led to a Fringe show, which led to being brought under both of their grand queer wings. It ignited a fire in me to become a grand queer writer who writes about grand queer things. I’m deeply grateful to everyone in Edmonton who supported me from the start of my journey as a writer: Darrin, Trevor, Kate, Betty, Michelle, Maureen, Simone, Amanda, Nadien, Kris, Shannon, Daniela, and so many more. I don’t think any of it would have happened without you.

7. Don’t ever take a DaDeO sandwich for granted. You don’t know how much you’ll miss them if you ever leave town.

STUDENTS CLUB

Young people are a vital part of the Citadel Theatre and we’re passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Students Club gives local junior and senior high school students an inside look at the world of professional theatre. It isn’t just about seeing shows - Students Club is about community, conversation, and celebrating live theatre in Edmonton.

Before select Mainstage performances, students take part in an engaging and interactive session led by one of Edmonton’s talented theatre artists. Then, after the curtain falls, they stick around for a lively talkback with members of the cast and crew – diving into the stories behind the scenes and learning about what it really takes to bring a production to life.

Casey and Diana is inspired by real people, places, and events. So, how do the artists who make the show a reality - playwrights, directors, designers, and actors, to name a few - ensure they’re presenting the story authentically and responsibly, while also offering something entertaining and relevant to right now? Join local playwright Elena (or Eli) Belyea as they demystify DRAMATURGY and how it can help clarify a (new or existing) play’s context, stakes, and world.

Elena (or Eli) Belyea (they/them) is queer and trans playwright, producer, performer, and artistic director of Tiny Bear Jaws (a little theatre company with teeth). Their works often explore the subjects of queerness, intimacy, technology, power, love, and loneliness, and have been presented internationally (including but not limited to Austria, Berlin, Hungary, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, and Quebec City). Elena is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada’s Playwriting program. Their play Smoke was published by Playwrights Canada Press in Fall 2022 and won the 2022-23 Sterling Award for Outstanding Independent Production (Edmonton).

THE STORY OF CASEY HOUSE

A welcoming place to die with dignity, free from judgement.

Casey House was founded by a group of intrepid volunteers led by activist and journalist June Callwood, as Canada’s first stand-alone facility for people living with HIV/AIDS, and Ontario’s first free-standing hospice. The doors first opened in 1988 during the height of the AIDS epidemic, in close proximity to Toronto’s Gay Village. At that time, people living with HIV were typically ostracized from family and friends and were often left to die alone. In contrast, Casey House believed their clients deserved dignity, compassion, and respect. The first client was greeted with a warm hug; it was the first time he had been touched in months. This approach was emulated by Princess Diana during her iconic visit to Casey House on October 25, 1991, in a photograph seen around the world.

Leaders advancing HIV health care.

As medical advances improved HIV treatment and outcomes, Casey House has evolved and grown from a hospice into a specialty hospital providing ground-breaking care to people living with and at risk of HIV. In 2017, they moved across the street into a lightfilled 58,000 sq. ft. facility. Just as in their first home, they provide a community and sense of belonging that connects people to care they may not have been able to access elsewhere. As leaders advancing HIV health care, they offer new services to meet the changing and complex needs of clients. In addition to a 14-bed inpatient unit for people requiring 24/7 medical care, there is a robust outpatient program for people who can benefit from a range of health services and social supports. The clinical team builds relationships through a harm reduction approach, and in 2021, opened Ontario’s first hospital-based supervised consumption service for clients who use substances. Building on a legacy of advocacy and social justice, they actively dismantle barriers to care and safe living. The humanity of each client is at the heart of everything they do.

As a show of support for the client-centred care the hospital provides, please consider donating to Casey House Foundation at caseyhouse.ca.

During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, we buried our friends in the morning, we protested in the afternoon, and we danced all night, and it was the dance that kept us in the fight because it was the dance we were fighting for. - Dan Savage

CASEY AND DIANA

As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary Season, we are proud to present a special feature in each program highlighting the rich history, unforgettable moments, and remarkable people who have shaped The Citadel Theatre.

WHERE STAGE AND AUDIENCE MEET

Built in 1984 as part of Phase Two of the Citadel Theatre’s expansion, the Maclab Theatre opened with its inaugural production of Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie on December 1, 1984. With 704 seats wrapped around three sides of the stage, the Maclab is one of the largest of only a handful of thrust stages in Canada, most notably at the Stratford Festival.

A thrust extends into the audience, dissolving the invisible fourth wall and inviting connection from every angle. Sometimes called a Shakespearean stage, like the thrust stage of the iconic Globe Theatre in London, actors and audiences share an immediate, electric relationship. Here, performers are never more than a few rows away, and every glance or whispered line carries weight.

Distinctive to its design are two “voms,” short for vomitorium. In ancient Rome, these were passageways for crowds to enter and exit amphitheatres quickly. Today, our voms serve as passageways beneath the audience that allow actors to enter and exit through the house, heightening the sense that story is unfolding all around you.

A STAGE SHAPED BY VISION

Named after Maclab Enterprises, the Maclab Theatre stands as a lasting expression of the Mactaggart and de La Bruyère families’ belief in the power of the arts to strengthen community. Their vision and generous donation helped create a space where stories could be shared in close connection, and where audiences of all ages could see themselves reflected onstage.

Continuously, for more than half a century, The Maclab group of companies has supported the Citadel Theatre with steadfast generosity and leadership. School Matinees, presented by Maclab Development Group and Second Street Fund, welcome students from Edmonton and surrounding communities to experience professional theatre. Offered across the season, these performances ensure young people have the opportunity to experience, appreciate, and participate in live storytelling, often for the very first time.

LOOKING AHEAD

For productions like Casey and Diana, the thrust stage becomes part of the storytelling itself, as audiences experience the story in a shared live experience. Joy lands differently when you can see it ripple across the room, as well as heartbreak, and laughter. Co-production partnerships, like this one with Alberta Theatre Projects (Calgary), are rare and exciting for this stage configuration, as most theatres don’t have a permanent thrust stage.

With generous support from The City of Edmonton’s Downtown Vibrancy Fund, we have been able to share the stories behind the stories during our 60 th Anniversary Season. As we look ahead to 2026/27 with excitement, we invite you to join us in the Maclab and Shoctor Theatres for another season of stories filled with joy, humour, and heart. Season ticket packages are now available, join us to continue gathering where stage and audience meet!

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS

THANK YOU! WE EXTEND OUR HEARTFELT THANKS to all our donors, whose generosity plays a crucial role in ensuring our community has the opportunity to experience performing arts. Our donors have a profound and lasting impact on the quality, accessibility, and relevance of the Citadel’s productions, facility, and educational offerings.
