UOW – SOUTH ASIAN PANEL & NETWORKING

On Wednesday 28th of January, Shelby Martin, Talent Resourcing Specialist, attended a South Asian Networking Panel at the University of Westminster (UoW), alongside Rifat Hasan, Account Manager, and Krasimir Chavdarov, UoW Head of Security. The event aimed to provide Westminster’s international students from South Asian backgrounds with the opportunity to connect with leading employers and industry professionals, explore a range of career pathways, and think creatively about non-linear career journeys. While open to all University of Westminster students, many attendees were studying Business School courses, including Business Management, HR, Finance, Accounting, and Marketing.

Given the high proportion of South Asian international students at UoW, the panel played an important role in broadening students’ perspectives on career planning, strengthening professional networks, and gaining exposure to real-world industry insights. The event was supported in partnership with the LCCI Asian Business Association, who invited their members to attend the networking session. Other panellists included representatives from EY and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Finance and HR roles, both of whom are University of Westminster alumni.

Shelby shared her career journey with CIS Security, highlighted current opportunities within the business, and offered guidance to students interested in careers across Finance, IT, and Security. Many students were particularly keen to understand how these areas intersect within the security sector, with a strong focus on the growing importance of technology and data in modern security roles.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to engage with neurodivergent candidates, gaining insight into their skills, perspectives, and career ambitions, reinforcing CIS Security’s commitment to inclusive recruitment and early careers engagement.

Krasimir Chavdarov, UoW HoS has stated: “Shelby has made CIS proud today! She done amazingly well as part of the UoW panel. The other panel members are climbing over each other to agree with her, and we expect her to get swarmed by the attendees after the Q&A.”

Rifat Hasan, Account Manager has stated: “I wanted to share some fantastic feedback from the recent recruitment panel and fair at UOW. Shelby was an absolute star throughout the entire event. The client, students, panel members, everyone in the room, were incredibly impressed by the level of professionalism, knowledge, and energy she brought. She represented CIS brilliantly and really strengthened our positioning with UOW. Her performance not only elevated our presence on the day but also helped forge stronger connections for future campaigns. Just wanted to make sure this exceptional effort was recognised. Really confident, knowledgeable, relatable, engaging and her voice carries. Absolute superstar.”

Huge well done to Shelby for stepping out of her comfort zone and being an ambassador for CIS!

Throughout the evening, we spoke with students and their families about the range of opportunities available, answered questions about entry routes, training pathways and career progression, and provided guidance to those unsure about their next move. We also engaged with young people who were exploring alternative options or seeking support in finding a course or job, helping them understand what roles might suit their interests and strengths.

It was a valuable opportunity to represent our organisation, connect with the local community and support young people as they navigate important decisions about their futures.

22 BISHOPSGATE ASSESSMENT DAY

On Thursday 5th February, Mafalda Oliveira, Talent Resourcing Specialist, Georgina Martin, Head of Talent Resourcing and Grace Feeney, Senior Onboarding Co-ordinator, hosted an assessment day for 22 Bishopsgate for the 7 officer level vacancies they had. With an outstanding 23 invited and 19 in attendance, all 7 job offers were made for 22 Bishopsgate as well as an additional 4 for elsewhere within the business.

The session commenced with an engaging presentation introducing CIS, our vision and culture, alongside an overview of 22 Bishopsgate and the variety of roles available. This provided candidates with a clear understanding of our standards, ambition and career pathways on offer, generating strong engagement from the outset. We then followed with one-to-one interviews with the management team, which enabled open, meaningful conversations, allowing managers to assess cultural alignment, attitude and long-term potential. Candidates responded positively to the opportunity for direct engagement, and feedback highlighted how welcoming, professional and inspiring the discussions felt.

Overall, the day enhanced our employer brand, created genuine excitement around joining CIS, and resulted in a strong pipeline of high-quality talent!

HERE EAST STUDENT CAREERS FAIR

On Monday 23rd February, Mafalda Oliveira, Talent Resourcing Specialist, and Flo Hyde, Onboarding Assistant, attended a student careers fair at Here East alongside Tudor Williams & Balazs Kereszt. This was the first ever careers fair at Here East, which was dedicated to all five campuses on site including UCL, University of Staffordshire London, Teesside University London and Loughborough University London. Throughout the day we spoke with undergraduates and postgraduates from a range of different courses, who were keen to learn about corporate security, training pathways and career progression within the industry. Some students already had their SIA licence and were ready to jump right in!

Students were engaged, asked insightful questions, and showed strong interest in learning how to enter the industry, progress their careers, and explore the apprenticeships we offer. Whilst some students we spoke to already had a prior understanding of opportunities in the security industry, others were eager to learn more about the industry, particularly with how their previous experience in customer service roles could transfer into achieving success in a front of house or security role with CIS. Overall, the event was a success for raising awareness of opportunities within our sector and allowed us to engage with the local community to support young people as they explore their career options and plan for the future.

CAPITAL CITY COLLEGE – SPEED INTERVIEWS

We recently partnered with Capital City College to support their Employability Team at a Security Recruitment Event, delivered in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Speed interviews took place on Friday 30 January, engaging with over 50 candidates holding SIA licences. The event provided an excellent opportunity to meet motivated individuals, efficiently assess skills and experience, and discuss both current and future opportunities within the security sector.

It was particularly encouraging to see such strong interest in security roles and to connect directly with candidates who are ready to progress into employment. As a direct outcome of the event, 12 candidates are attending interviews this week for both response and permanent site roles. Events like this play a vital role in strengthening our talent pipeline and building meaningful relationships with local education providers.

YOUTH JOB FAIR – LANGLEY PARK SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

On Thursday 29th January, Senior Talent Resourcing Specialist, Darcie Alabaster and Talent Resourcing Specialist, Mafalda Oliveria attended the Langley Park School for Girls Job Fair. Throughout the event, we engaged with a wide range of students from Year 7 to Year 13. Although the students are not yet old enough to enter the security industry, Darcie and Mafalda were on hand to share insights into future career pathways, internship opportunities, and the key skills we look for in potential candidates. We look forward to attending again next year!

Ray Marskell, Director of Risk and Intelligence, Joe Easterbrook, Head of Security, and Anushka Ranade, Intelligence Researcher, recently attended the UCL Department of Security and Crime Science Industry Partner Poster Event, where our current interns proudly presented their research and placement experiences. The event provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work our interns have been undertaking during their placements with CIS, while also engaging with prospective students interested in joining the next cohort.

Throughout the evening, the team spoke with attendees about career pathways in the security industry and the valuable real-world experience gained through the internship programme. It was great to see such strong CIS branding on display and to witness the confidence and professionalism our interns have developed during their time with the company.

in bridging the gap between academic study and real-world security. We’re proud to support the next generation of security professionals and look forward to welcoming future interns through our continued partnership with UCL.”

Ray Marskell MSyl, Director of Risk and Intelligence stated:

“Anushka’s presence at the event was particularly meaningful, as she began her journey with CIS as an intern through the UCL programme and has since progressed to become a full-time member of our intelligence team. Her transition from intern to employee highlights the success of the partnership between CIS and UCL and demonstrates the real career opportunities available to students who take part in the placement programme.”

Anushka Ranade, Intelligence Researcher stated:

Joe Easterbrook, Head of Security stated:

“Attending the poster event was a fantastic opportunity to see the hard work and development of our interns first-hand. They represented CIS exceptionally well and demonstrated how valuable industry placements are

“The UCL poster event was a great showcase of the work our interns completed at CIS. It was exciting to see them confidently present their posters and share their experiences with firstyear students and industry professionals. I am looking forward to seeing where their future takes them.”

A huge well done to our current interns and all involved!

As we wrapped up National Apprenticeship in February, we wanted to extend our thanks to everyone who has contributed to making the week such a success.

Tracy Plant, People & Culture Director stated:

“To our apprentices – thank you for your enthusiasm, dedication, and drive. You bring fresh thinking, curiosity, and brilliant energy to CIS. Your commitment to learning and growth is something we are incredibly proud of and we are honoured to be part of your career journey.

To our managers, mentors and training partners who are instrumental in our Apprentices successes. Taking time to support and coach our Apprentices is vital in helping them thrive and become our future leaders.

Apprenticeships continue to be a key part of how we grow talent, strengthen our teams, and build the future of our organisation and industry. This week has been a brilliant reminder of the power of learning and the importance of investing in people whether this is at the start, middle or during a career change of their journey.

Let’s continue to create opportunities the help all our people shine, not just on this week but throughout the year.”

Apprenticeships are something we truly value here at CIS. We invest greatly in developing talent and supporting meaningful career pathways within the company. Many of our apprentices have gone on to build long-term careers with us and we are proud to celebrate their growth, achievements, and ongoing success.

“I chose to do an apprenticeship with CIS to gain handson payroll experience in a positive and professional environment. Throughout my apprenticeship, I have grown in confidence, developed my skills, and built strong professional relationships. A key highlight has been learning while working and gaining both valuable experience and a recognised Payroll Administrator Level 3 qualification to kick-start my career.”

To all our apprentices, past and current, thank you for your dedication and commitment.

We are excited to continue supporting the next generation of professionals.

Apprenticeships have often been seen as training for young people leaving school, but apprenticeships are available for anyone of any age, and they range from entry level, right through to degree level qualifications.

At CIS, colleagues can choose from a wide range of apprenticeships across many different disciplines, they offer a chance to grow professionally, gain recognised qualifications and apply new skills in day-to-day work.

We are proud to introduce Naomi Oke and her experience:

“I starting my apprenticeship in Sales and Marketing at CIS Security which has been an exciting and rewarding experience. From day one, I’ve been immersed in a fast-paced environment where I get to learn from experienced professionals and contribute to real business growth.

One of the most valuable aspects of my journey so far has been gaining hands-on experience in both Sales and Marketing. I’ve had the opportunity to work on marketing campaigns, social media strategies, and branding initiatives, which have broadened my skills in digital marketing and content creation.

The team at CIS has been incredibly supportive, providing mentorship and guidance that has helped me grow both professionally and personally. I’ve learned the importance of clear communication, strategic thinking, and adaptability skills that are essential in this industry.

One of the biggest highlights so far has been seeing my work make an impact. Whether it’s helping to assist with a successful marketing campaign, or improving customer engagement, every task has contributed to my development and confidence in the field.

With each challenge and success, I’m building the foundation for a future in Sales and Marketing, and I’m grateful to CIS Security for this incredible opportunity.”

Apprenticeships provide an excellent opportunity to kick start your future and develop your skills to have a rewarding career.

We are proud to introduce Joe Easterbrook and his experience:

“I chose to do an apprenticeship with CIS because I wanted to refine my existing knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of protective security, rather than just relying on experience alone. The Level 4 Protective Security Adviser Apprenticeship gives me a clear framework to develop my skills and better understand the reasoning behind security decisions. It allows me to build on what I already know while learning new approaches that I can apply directly in my role at The Leadenhall Building. CIS supporting me through this apprenticeship shows a real commitment to developing its people and helping us grow professionally.

The apprenticeship has had a big influence on my day-to-day work. It has strengthened my practical knowledge of physical security so that I now look at risks more holistically and think about how different security elements link together. This is especially useful as we move towards the implementation of Martyn’s Law, as I feel better prepared to contribute to planning, assessing vulnerabilities, and improving protective measures. It is also supporting my continuing professional development by giving me new tools, skills, and confidence to engage in conversations about risk, resilience, and threat mitigation. Overall, I think it has made me more assured in my role.

One of the biggest highlights has been meeting new people from within CIS across different parts of the business. Everyone brings different experiences and perspectives, so hearing how others approach security challenges has helped me look at things at The Leadenhall Building slightly differently. It has been valuable to learn from people who work in different buildings and environments, as it broadens my thinking and helps me see new ways of improving what we do.”

Apprenticeships at CIS offer invaluable skills to progress in your career creating pathways for long-term development. At CIS apprenticeships have helped shape previous colleagues into great Leadership roles within our business.

We are proud to introduce Rosie Brett and her experience:

“My apprenticeship with CIS has enabled me to develop my IT skills while applying them to real situations within my role as a Technical Support Apprentice. It has significantly improved my confidence, allowing me to take on greater responsibilities within my job role. I now approach tasks more thoughtfully and apply what I learn directly to my work.

As I am coming to the end of my apprenticeship, a key highlight has been recognising my growth in both confidence and technical knowledge. I am now able to take on tasks more independently and complete them in the most effective and efficient way.”

CIS Security has been celebrating the power of apprenticeships and the difference they make in our industry. Apprenticeships don’t just build qualifications - they build confidence, careers, and stronger teams, supporting both individuals and settings to thrive.

We are proud to introduce Rita Calado and her experience:

“Although I have only recently started my apprenticeship, I chose to undertake it with CIS because I am passionate about continuous professional development and wanted to further strengthen my knowledge and skills within the security industry.

Even at this early stage, the apprenticeship has encouraged me to think more strategically about my role and how I can add greater value to both our clients and the wider team. It has already provided structure around my learning and development, which I find motivating.

A highlight so far has simply been taking the step to invest in my own growth and having the support of the business in doing so. I’m looking forward to applying what I learn in a practical, operational environment as the programme progresses.”

CIS had the pleasure of asking our Company Trainer, Daniel Stanger a few key questions about his journey as an apprentice.

Why should you choose to do an apprenticeship with CIS?

Apprenticeships at CIS Security offer a powerful way to develop and enhance your skills whilst working and have been structured to directly align with the demands of our industry. This enables our colleagues to strengthen their expertise and apply this new knowledge in real time. Beyond this initial skill development, apprenticeships also create clear pathways for long-term growth and potential promotion, which has proven invaluable for those colleagues looking to progress into leadership roles, or specialise in particular areas of the business. Apprenticeships will broaden your capabilities, enhance your skills and help to open the door to new opportunities within CIS.

How can an apprenticeship enhance your day-to-day?

Being an apprentice enhances your role and gives your “day-to-day” more of a dynamic. This is because during your apprenticeship, the application of the newly learnt Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSB’s), are applied in everyday scenarios. This inevitably boosts performance, builds confidence, and gives our apprentices new tools to tackle

problems, create solutions and drive positive change. Through structured learning and practical application, KSB’s are gained that are immediately relevant to learner’s roles, helping to improve both capability and effectiveness within that role. With guidance from experienced CIS mentors on-site, paired with the expert tutors from our trusted training providers, colleagues benefit from dedicated support throughout their apprenticeship journey. This combination of real-world experience and professional instruction ensures our colleagues feel supported, empowered, and well-equipped to succeed.

What have been some of the highlights in your role as Apprenticeship Engagement Lead?

One of my greatest highlights has been witnessing colleagues who are seeking growth and development find the apprenticeship pathway that truly resonates with their goals, made all the better when I see them go on to achieve genuine success both within the apprenticeship and through promotions within CIS. Seeing someone progress from curiosity to confidence, and ultimately to completion, is incredibly rewarding. Equally inspiring are the real-life stories of personal and professional transformation shared by learners across the business. These achievements reflect not only their hard work and commitment, but also the positive impact that apprenticeships can have on careers, morale, and future aspirations within CIS Security.

As we begin a bold new chapter in leadership development: CIS Aspire 2026.

unique blend of capability, curiosity, and drive.

Formerly known as the Leadership Programme, CIS Aspire reflects an important truth - leaders don’t grow in static environments. Just as we invest in developing future leaders, our programmes must evolve too. Growth demands relevance, adaptability, and intention.

That evolution begins with a new name and a renewed purpose. CIS Aspire is built on a simple but powerful belief: Building Leadership through Passion and Determination. This shift is more than cosmetic; it signals a programme designed to meet the needs of tomorrow’s leaders, not yesterday’s.

And this is only the beginning. CIS Aspire 2026 brings with it a series of exciting enhancements that will unfold over the year each one designed to deepen impact and unlock potential.

Earlier this year, we hosted our Aspire Assessment Centre, where 24 exceptional individuals were invited to compete for just 12 places in the 2026 cohort. The level of talent was nothing short of extraordinary.

After a highly competitive process, 13 outstanding candidates rose to the top and earned their place each bringing a

The programme officially launches on 18 February, marking the start of an immersive journey into leadershipfocused knowledge, skills, and behaviours. These are not just tools for today, but foundations our participants will carry with them throughout their lives.

Join us in congratulating the CIS Aspire 2026 cohort as they step forward to lead with confidence, purpose, and aspiration. This is where their journey begins.

At CIS, we take pride in the contributions of our work experience students and the positive impact they have across our organisation. Their excitement, new ideas, and eagerness to learn really make a difference on our teams, and we’re here to support them as they take important steps toward their future careers.

Offering work experience is about more than just giving students a chance to learn, it’s about opening their eyes to the wide range of career opportunities within the security sector. We aim to provide a wellrounded experience that helps students build a solid foundation for whatever path they choose in the future.

We offer work experience opportunities across a wide range of departments including Human Resources, IT, Sales, Marketing, Intelligence, and Operations, giving individuals the chance to explore different career paths and discover where their interests and strengths lie. This hands-on experience across different departments gives students a clear, well-rounded view of how our business works and how every department plays a part in our overall success.

Work experience is a vital part of personal and professional development. It helps individuals apply academic knowledge in real-world settings, while building essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. It also provides a clearer picture of workplace expectations and helps shape future career goals.

We’re proud to have played a part in the journeys of so many talented and enthusiastic individuals through our work experience programme. To all our past and future students, we wish you every success as you pursue your goals!

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO BARRY THOMPSON FOR 20 YEARS OF SERVICE AT CIS

Having left the Army Serving with the Royal Engineers with Regiments based in Germany and UK along with several operational tours, Barry joined CIS in the role of Mobile Supervisor covering the London area.

Through his drive and determination Barry progressed into his current role of Regional Account Manager. The progression through the years from Mobile Supervisor, to Controller in head office SOC, before moving out to support the national operation.

On the national portfolio, Barrys first role was as a Area Supervisor before being appointed Site Manager and Area Manager for a key account (Royal Mail).

With growth of the national portfolio Barry was then promoted into Account Manager. where he now looks after a wide portfolio of clients within the North of England.

With a thorough understanding of clients requirements Barry continually delivers a first class service demonstrating the CIS values everyday

It is a pleasure to have Barry working on the National Accounts CIS team!

A FEW WORDS FROM BARRY THOMPSON

“I began the journey with CIS in 2006 after applying for a position as a Security Officer. Following the interview I was then reinterviewed for the role of Mobile Supervisor covering the London area. I remember a comment at the time after recently moving to London ‘do you know your way around London’ the response being ‘not fully but with a street map you can’t get lost’.

After a period covering this role and an injury at work I joined the control room team as a Duty Controller. Being based in Head Office it gave me a good understanding of CIS ethos and other departments. The business was much smaller then but the values of personal touch remain the same now. The now CEO, Neill Catton, regularly made visits to control at weekends, taking an interest in the teams working out of hours - he would take time out of his own time to have a cup of tea and a chat.

Later I then moved out to the regions looking after national sites. This position came from a suggestion after seeing a gap nationally and a need for supervision outside London. The position was covering as Area Supervisor covering sites ad hoc, but more importantly sharing support to stand alone sites bringing the company together. I was then appointed as Site Manager and Area Manager for a key account (Royal Mail) with locations in Salford, Stockport, Sheffield, Chesterfield, and Milton Keynes. With growth of the national portfolio then being promoted into Account Manager (Arcadia) this role quickly escalated the distance CIS extended to with my visits reach all capitals of UK.

I now look after a wide portfolio of clients within the Regions covering several locations and varying clients. Corporate, Government, Retail, Science, Warehouse and Estate. I have a thorough understanding of clients requirements and continually deliver first class service. This together whilst demonstrating the CIS values everyday

I have seen a lot of changes through the years seeing the company grow and met a lot of personalities along the way, it has been a fantastic journey working with great colleagues, learning from peers gaining experience along the way. The things I have learnt I have passed on sharing knowledge and working together with my teams. They themselves making my journey a happy one, lots of good performances from individuals and teams. There are too many to mention individually but each has given the proud dad sort of feeling and all of them know who they are. Them receiving well done’s and winning awards is like a ‘mic drop’ for me, with others seeing the good I see.

The 20yrs have passed so quickly, I still have fond memories of the Head Office and how it used to look, for instance the Kitchen dining area previously being the control room. Thankfully the cars have improved over the years starting out as mobile in a Ford Ka which were not built for comfort being 6’ 2” and not the smallest build I was packed in.

It is a pleasure to work on the National Accounts CIS team, I’m looking forward to future years and the progression across the country. I wouldn’t change the career path I have followed for the last 20years.”

The initiative provides clear, jargon free guidance across key life stages, from starting your first job and navigating working life, to running a small business and understanding tax in retirement.

“SMALL CHANGES, BIGGER FUTURE: GETTING MORE FROM YOUR PENSION”

A workplace pension is one of the most effective ways to build long-term financial stability, and experts consistently agree it remains one of the most efficient ways to save for retirement. Through our scheme with Standard Life, contributions are made not just by you, but also by the company giving your savings an immediate boost. In addition, pension contributions benefit from tax relief, meaning some of the money that would normally go to the government is added to your pension instead.

Many people underestimate how powerful this is: even small, consistent contributions can grow significantly over time thanks to compound investment returns. Starting early and staying consistent is key, but it’s never too late to improve your position.

One simple way to increase your pension savings is by increasing your contribution rate. Even a small increase of 1–2% can make a meaningful difference over time.

Over a working lifetime, this small adjustment can result in thousands of pounds of additional retirement savings.

It’s also worth checking whether you have any old pension pots from previous employers. Research suggests that in the UK there are over £26 billion sitting in unclaimed or “lost” pensions, with the average pot worth around £9,500. Many people move jobs multiple times and lose track of earlier schemes.

Tools such as the government’s Pension Tracing Service can help locate these funds, and once found, you may be able to consolidate them into your current plan with Standard Life. Bringing pensions together can make them easier to manage and may reduce fees, although it’s important to check for any guarantees or penalties before transferring.

Finally, taking an active interest in your pension now can make a significant difference later. Regularly reviewing your contributions, checking your projected retirement income, and ensuring your personal details and beneficiaries are up to date are all simple but valuable steps.

While pensions can sometimes feel distant or complex, they are one of the most tax-efficient ways to save for the future. Making small, informed decisions today can help ensure greater financial security and flexibility in retirement.

The roadshow kicked off in December 2025, and we are proud to share that the team has already completed 48 site visits.

The feedback so far has been overwhelming positive with colleagues valuing the opportunity to have open conversations.

Our Director of Payroll & Benefits, Evi Garoufi-London, shares;

“The passion and curiosity shown by our colleagues throughout the Roadshow has energised us, highlighting how valuable it is to take payroll out of processes and into real human connections. This journey has strengthened trust, built deeper understanding, and reminded us that when a payroll team leads with compassion and purpose, the impact reaches far beyond payslips.”

Our Senior Payroll & Pensions Specialist, Aleksandra Lynes, shares;

“From our side, this has been highly valuable, as it helps us gain a better understanding of the realities on site, identify common issues, and ensure our processes are working effectively. It also reinforces that the Payroll team is accessible, engaged, and committed to supporting employees. A key highlight has been the warm welcome from teams on site, which clearly reflects the strong team spirit across the business. Overall, this initiative is strengthening communication, improving mutual understanding, and enhancing the support we provide across all sites.”

We are excited to continue this journey over the coming months, strengthening connections and listening to our people.

05. COMPANY NEWS

We are incredibly proud to announce that CIS Security is the first company in the WORLD to achieve the BS 30480 - Suicide Prevention in the Workplace accreditation.

This landmark standard from the BSI Group sets a global benchmark for how organisations recognise, respond to and support individuals impacted by suicide in the workplace.

Our BSI assessor recognised; “CIS is a galaxy of stars. The company demonstrates exceptional compassion and flexibility…often going above and beyond what could reasonably be expected.”

This recognition validates the structures and everyday actions that underpin our approach to mental health and wellbeing.

People & Culture Director, Tracy Plant, stated;

“Achieving BS 30480 reflects our dedication to building a culture where wellbeing is prioritised, conversations are safe and no one must struggle alone. We encourage all organisations to explore BS 30480 and join us in raising the bar for workplace wellbeing. We need to break down the stigma, build understanding, and create environments where people feel seen, valued, and supported.”

At CIS, we know this work is ongoing and we are committed to listening, learning and continually strengthening how we can best support our people.

WE ARE PROUD TO SHARE SOME EXCITING NEWS!

CIS has been awarded two new contracts with the London Borough of Hackney, continuing our long-standing partnership and commitment to delivering high-quality security and concierge services across the borough.

CIS Security Ltd (CIS) is delighted to announce that it has recently been awarded two new contracts with the London Borough of Hackney. Over the past year, 52 security suppliers competed for the two security tenders published by Hackney, and CIS emerged as the successful bidder for both Lots 1 and 2 following a comprehensive quality and price assessment.

This represents a significant achievement for CIS. While CIS has delivered the security contract for the past 12 years, the London Borough of Hackney substantially revised the scope and structure of the tenders on this occasion, opening the opportunity to a wide range of suppliers across the security sector. Building on more than a decade of partnership, this award will see CIS continue to deliver comprehensive security services across corporate sites, estates, and vacant premises.

Under the new agreement, CIS will deliver services across two key lots:

“I’m immensely proud that our team has retained the security and concierge contract with the London Borough of Hackney for another four years, a clear testament to the professionalism, commitment and high standards our people demonstrate every day.

This award builds on more than a decade of trusted partnership and consistent delivery across the borough. My sincere thanks to Tracy Spallin, Andrew Parsons and Opama Khan for their support and for leading such a professional and competitive procurement process.

We look forward to strengthening our services even further, enhancing safety and customer care, investing in our people, and continuing to innovate in how we deliver security and concierge services to the communities we serve.”

LBH BLEED KIT INSTALLATION

We are very pleased to confirm that after nine months in the making, two public access emergency bleed kits have now been successfully installed and registered at both Dalston Library and Shoreditch Library.

This CIS Security initiative aims to ensure that local residents have access to life-saving equipment in the event of a catastrophic bleed. The kits have been purchased and will be maintained by CIS Security.

Michael Dawson, Key Account Manager for the London Borough of Hackney, stated:

“We are incredibly proud to support this important initiative, helping to provide vital, potentially life-saving equipment within the community. Having these kits readily accessible ensures that, in the event of a serious incident, members of the public are better equipped to respond quickly and effectively before emergency services arrive. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to community safety and wellbeing across Hackney.”

CIS AND LBH SAFETY SEMINAR

In February, CIS delivered a Member Safety Seminar at Hackney Town Hall. Simon Riley, CIS Behavioural Detection & Training Specialist, delivered a great session attended by Caroline Woodley, Mayor of Hackney, along with councillors from a range of political parties. The seminar began with networking over coffee, followed by a powerful presentation that explored key topics impacting safety in today’s complex environment.

This insightful seminar sparked meaningful conversations and offered attendees practical tools to improve both individual and organisational safety.

Simon Riley, stated:

“As we approach the May Local Elections (and as I carried out for the nation’s MP’s in 2024), it is paramount to me that we take a common sense approach to personal and public life safety – and provide an actionable and reasonable ‘hand-book’ for individual and team safety. It was my pleasure to attend Hackney Town Hall and speak with and to the Councillors and provide my perspective on how to stay safe, carry out all of the requirements of representing the good people of Hackney and reviewing how we live our lives. Planning, Gut Instinct, Mental Mapping and understanding of ‘Riley’s Rules’

were all casually discussed, and it was a privilege to spend an evening with the electoral representation of Hackney. This is a safe world, full of good people and we all have a part to play in supporting those that carry out such an important role.”

Tracy Plant, CIS People & Culture Director stated:

“This training is vital to ensure the safety and confidence of our councillors, particularly in the lead-up to an election when the demands and public visibility of their roles increase. I would like to thank Simon for once again delivering a bespoke and highly relevant safety seminar tailored to the needs of Hackney’s elected representatives.”

We would like to extend our gratitude to all who attended to make this safety seminar a meaningful success!

CRISIS LEADERSHIP 2026

In January, members of our Senior Leadership Team took part in an intensive Crisis Leadership Training programme, delivered by Alistair Sutherland QPM & John Campbell LLB, MBA , QPM.

The value of this training lay not just in the content, but in the experience of those leading it. Alistair Sutherland, CIS Client Relationship Director, former Assistant Commissioner of the City of London Police, Deputy Chief Constable of British Transport Police and Commander of the Metropolitan Police, brings unparalleled operational & strategic leadership experience from across all three London forces. His career spans frontline policing, firearms command, counterterrorism, major incident response and the delivery of policing at the highest national and international levels.

Alongside Alistair, the course was co-delivered by John Campbell, former Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police. With more than 35 years of policing experience, including leadership of counterterrorism and CBRN responses, service on the UK Counter Terrorism Committee, and experience as a hostage and crisis negotiator, John brought deep insight into decisionmaking under pressure and leading organisations through the most challenging of circumstances.

The course took senior leaders through the full crisis lifecycle, combining theory with realistic, scenario-based exercises. The interactive phases challenged participants to think critically, collaborate effectively, and lead with clarity when information is incomplete and pressure is high.

Alistair stated, “In today’s world, with an increasingly complex range of global and local risks, preparing leaders to respond effectively in a crisis has never been more important. Organisations that invest in exercising and

testing their strategic crisis leadership capability before a real incident occurs build the strongest foundation for success, enabling confident decision-making, business continuity under pressure and the protection of trust and reputation. Campbell Sutherland Crisis Leadership delivers highly realistic, immersive exercises for senior leaders, combined with the insight and guidance needed to navigate the most challenging crisis scenarios”

CEO, Neill Catton stated;

“This was an outstanding piece of training. Learning directly from leaders who have commanded real crises brings an authenticity and credibility that simply cannot be replicated. The insight, challenge and practical application provided by Alistair and John will have a lasting impact on how we lead, make decisions and support our customers in complex and high-pressure situations.”

Crisis Leadership training is just one element of CIS’ integrated service delivery model, which combines intelligence-led operations, advanced technology, and highly trained people to protect customers in complex and evolving environments.

CIS is proud to invest in leadership development that strengthens our organisation and enhances the resilience we deliver to our customers every day.

In February, we were proud to launch our Women in Security Campaign 2026!

In the lead up to International Women’s Day 2026, and in recognition of this year’s theme #GivetoGain focusing on generosity and meaningful inclusion, we are celebrating the outstanding women across CIS.

We are honoured to shine a light on some of our great colleagues. Over a decade ago, Aga sat in a room completing her SIA licence as the only woman there.

Aga leads and empowers a large team with confidence, compassion and unwavering standards. What stands out most about Aga is the pride she has in her team. She supports them, champions them and sees them as family. Her journey is a powerful reminder that leadership is built through courage and consistency.

To Aga, thank you for your passion, for leading by example and lifting up others.

We are truly excited to recognise the incredible women across our business who show up every day and prove that we are stronger together.

On Friday 6th March, we hosted our annual CIS Security Women’s Day Breakfast to mark this important day, and wow…what a special morning it was.

A huge thank you our incredible speakers:

f Cassie Harrison, Founder, HerizenMidlife Wellness for Women

f Monica EL’Siwidy Jones, Property Manager, Avison Young

f Lucy D’Orsi CVO QPM, Chief Constable, British Transport Police

Each of them shared honest, impactful stories from their journeys. Their experiences and insights resonated with everyone in the room, leaving us feeling empowered, recharged and reminded of the importance of lifting each other up.

Our Event and Business Manager, Samantha Stewart, shares; “International Women’s Day is, without question, the event of the year for me. To sit alongside women from every walk of life, each on

their own unique journey, each with their own stories, challenges, and triumphs, is nothing short of extraordinary. Every conversation, every shared experience, and every moment of courage in that room reminds me of the power, resilience, and brilliance that women carry every single day. It is a true honour and privilege to witness such strength in one space. I leave each year feeling energised, inspired, and genuinely uplifted, with a spring in my step and a renewed sense of purpose. I can’t wait to see you all next year!”

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to Samantha Stewart organising a wonderful event.

It was great to see strong collaboration and confidence throughout the day, and the overall quality of candidates was very high. Following the assessments, CIS made three offers to standout individuals who demonstrated excellent potential and alignment with our values.

The event was a rewarding experience and a great example of our commitment to diversity and inclusion.

A huge well done to Shelby and all involved!

Shelby Martin, Talent Resourcing Specialist, stated:

“I’m proud to have been part of this initiative during Women’s International Week. It was inspiring to see such high-quality candidates, and making three offers at the end of the day was a great outcome.”

We are proud to share the experience of Zoe Howell, Technical Systems Administrator at 40 Leadenhall, who spoke openly about her journey toward being diagnosed with ADHD.

Zoe shares; “It was a real mix of emotions. I felt relief that I finally had answers but also scared and worried because I didn’t know how people would respond. It was nice to feel like there wasn’t something wrong with me, my brain just works differently.”

Her experience highlights just how powerful understanding and support can be, as well as the impact of the right workplace culture.

“I’m allowed to be my full authentic self here. My managers are the best, and they get me. The flexibility and trust have been key in helping me truly thrive.”

Zoe’s words are a powerful reminder that when we take time to understand our people, we create environments where people can flourish.

Let’s continue to listen, learn and foster workplaces where everyone feels empowered to be themselves.

On the 17th March, The Leadenhall Building and CIS welcomed students from UCL studying Security & Crime Science for a closer look at how security works in a busy, high-profile environment. Joe Easterbrook, Head of Security, talked through how the building’s unique design shapes the way we keep people safe, the kinds of real-world risks we deal with every day (from local protests to wider global issues), and the challenges of balancing good security with the day-to-day activity of a fully occupied building. Joe also covered how incidents are handled and why strong teamwork across different groups is so important.

Dr Amy Thornton, Deputy Head of Department (Education), Security and Crime Science, UCL stated:

“I was delighted to bring most of our first year BSc cohort to the Leadenhall building to learn from Joe Easterbrook about how what they are learning in the classroom translates to real life. Joe put on a really interesting talk that directly used many of the theories they’ve been learning to show a case study of how private security works with police and counterterrorism professionals to keep

tall buildings safe. The students loved the trip and showed great interest in potential careers in the sector afterwards.”

Joe Easterbrook, Head of Security stated:

“It was great to welcome so many students with a real interest in security. Hopefully, it gave them a useful, real-world view of the risks, challenges, and day-today realities behind some of the theory they’ve been learning. There were definitely some interesting questions!”

We are also excited to share that CIS will be reviewing applications for our next round of UCL interns very soon.

We would like to thank all involved for making this collaborative event possible!

STAMP OUT SPIKING

CIS is pleased to be an official member of Stamp Out Spiking

Spiking is a serious issue that affects people across our communities and it is one that requires collective action. Through this membership, we hope to support the important work being done to raise awareness, improve prevention and ensure better understanding of how to act when incidents occur. We believe it is essential to take a proactive approach and work closely with partners across the industry.

This is a small but meaningful step in the wider effort to protect people and our reduce harm.

We are grateful for the work that Stamp Out Spiking are doing and are proud to stand alongside others working toward safer communities for all.

NEW PETITION

CIS is supporting a new petition calling for enhanced legislative protection for security workers. This is not a CIS-led initiative, but one we are proud to stand behind as part of our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of those working within our industry.

The petition calls for legislative change so that assaulting a security worker becomes a standalone aggravated criminal offence.

Security workers are often the first to respond to incidents involving crime and violence, playing a vital role in protecting people, property and public spaces. Unfortunately, many face violence and abuse while carrying out their duties across venues, businesses and the wider community.

Introducing a dedicated offence would act as a deterrent and formally recognise the essential role security professionals play in safeguarding public safety.

TEAM IFTAR BREAKING FAST AT 40 LEADENHALL

On the 27th February, the 40 Leadenhall team came together in support of their colleagues celebrating Ramadan, hosting an Iftar for all of those that could attend.

Zoe Howell, 40 Leadenhall Smart Systems Admin, stated:

“Today was humbling. I fasted for part of Ramadan with some of my colleagues and I can’t lie it was hard!

Not being able to eat or drink all day actually forces you to think. It shifts your focus, tests your discipline, and gives you a small insight into the strength it takes to do this consistently. Breaking fast at Iftar in the evening was so special. It wasn’t just about the food, although that was something special, it was about community, gratitude, patience and understanding for each other.

I only did this for one day. Many of my colleagues observe Ramadan for weeks, while continuing to work, being parents, leading teams, and contributing fully to normal life. That level of commitment to their faith is something I really respect.

Genuinely grateful for the opportunity to experience it, and even more grateful to work alongside people who are generous enough to share their culture and traditions so openly.

I am so grateful for the roof over my head, the food in my belly, the job & the workplace I love so much, and the safety and stability I get to experience everyday. This really made me think of those who aren’t as lucky.”

Ramadan Mubarak to all those who were observing.

A big thank you to Head of Security, Andrew Gough, Yasine, and Hasan for organising this great event.

CoLP SAFETY STAND

On the 3rd of March, 40 Leadenhall and CIS, were pleased to welcome the City of London Police, who delivered an engaging and informative safety session in our Central Hall. Representatives from the Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Cyber Griffin Team were on hand to share valuable guidance with our occupiers and visitors.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team provided practical advice on key risks within the City, including phone snatching and bag theft, and offered on-the-spot phone marking to help ensure that lost or stolen devices can be identified and returned to their rightful owners.

The Cyber Griffin Team shared important insights on both personal and workplace online security, equipping attendees with actionable steps to strengthen their digital resilience.

Although the teams were on site for just two hours, they remained consistently busy, speaking with a steady stream of attendees throughout. The high level of engagement was fantastic to see and reflects the community’s strong commitment to safety and awareness.

We would like to thank the City of London Police for their continued support of CIS and 40 Leadenhall.

Andrew Gough. 40 Leadenhall Head of Security stated:

“Strong collaboration between security teams and the City of London Police is essential to maintaining a safe and resilient business environment. Recently, we were pleased to host the City of London Police with a dedicated safety stand, creating an opportunity to engage directly with occupants and raise awareness of key security practices.

By sharing intelligence, aligning response strategies, and building trusted relationships, organisations can better prevent threats, respond effectively to incidents, and protect people, assets, and critical infrastructure across the City.”

CIS Security Limited is at number 6 on the Infologue Top 100 Security Companies 2025. Well deserved recognition!

CIS VOLUNTEERING INITIATIVE

The Great British Spring Clean is a nationwide litterpicking campaign organised by Keep Britain Tidy, now in its 11th year, aiming to unite individuals, families, schools, community groups, businesses, and local authorities to improve local environments and protect wildlife.

Over the past decade, volunteers have collected more than 4.5 million bags of rubbish across the UK.

On 26th March 2026, CIS proudly collaborated with colleagues across security, cleaning, and front-of-house teams to support a litter-picking initiative in and around Hyde Park. The day not only contributed to keeping our shared spaces clean, but also provided a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and experience the benefits of fresh air and teamwork. Litter was collected throughout the park and in the underpass at Marble Arch Station, helping to improve these high-traffic areas for the wider community.

Key Account Manager, Callum Hobbs and 5* Response Officer, Navin Reza were also present, showing their support for the Great British Spring Clean Campaign and reinforcing CIS’s commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement.

CIS’ LONDON’S AIR AMBULANCE DONATION BREW MONDAY:

A MOMENT TO CONNECT

January can be a challenging time for many, which is why we hosted a Brew Monday, a Samaritans initiative, is a helpful reminder to slow down and check in with one another.

At CIS, we know that wellbeing is often supported through simple, everyday moments. A quick conversation or a shared cup of tea – small moments can brighten someone’s day more than you realise.

Brew Monday is about taking a pause and making space for those small connections.

We hope you all can find a moment today to pause, connect and look after yourselves and others.

If you are able to, you can support Samaritans via the link below:

CIS VOLUNTEERING INITIATIVE

On the Thursday 12th of February, CIS and a group of volunteers from Savills, JPC by Samsic, T Rowe Price, CIS and Warwick Court’s ront of house team came together to prepare a Valentine’s meal for 55 guests at Blackfriars Settlement.

We were greeted and accompanied by Tina Johnston and Sieglinde Cosias who lead the “Positive Ageing” initiative, hosting large groups of older adults (ages 60+) to promote social inclusion, wellbeing and interconnectivity within the community.

The volunteering day, organised by Christian Lynch from Savills, ESG Manager, was an engaging and heartwarming success. We prepared a roast dinner with a chicken, fish and vegetarian option as well as dessert, decorated the hall in theme for Valentine’s Day and hosted a Valentine’s Day Quiz for our guests.

Not only was the opportunity an insightful and engaging experience for all volunteers, but it also aligns with CIS’s values and our ESG strategy. The social pillar of ESG emphasises the importance of community cohesion, health and wellbeing and care for each and every individual. Blackfriars Settlement’s Positive Ageing initiative promotes the above by engaging seniors to remain active, participate in activities and stay connected with each other, combatting boredom and loneliness.

Emerence Sepulchre, ESG Analyst stated “This volunteering day was a fun and dynamic day out of the office which brought people together, provoked laughter and warmed our hearts.”

CIS VOLUNTEERING INITIATIVE

We are delighted that our very own ESG Manager, Jordy Mukudi, had his article published in the City Security magazine discussing how to move beyond compliance to lead on sustainability. Jordy explores how sustainable choices - from energy-efficient equipment and reduced carbon emissions to smarter use of resources can sit alongside robust protection rather than compete with it.

Jordy Mukudi, ESG Manager stated:

“I am so proud to see The Sustainable Security Blueprint featured in the City Security Magazine. Sustainability isn’t just an add on for security providers, it’s a strategic imperative. I am grateful for the opportunity to break down how our industry can operate responsibly while delivering high-quality professional services.”

We can honestly say the article makes for a great and Insightful read, well done Jordy! Read the full article by clicking the link below:

On the 18th February CIS’ 2026 volunteering program officially launched with a successful beach clean-up on the South Bank organised by Andrew Gough in collaboration with First Mile | Certified B Corp.

Ousman Bah, 40 Leadenhall, Guest Experience Officer, ESG Champion, and ESG OSPA Finalist stated:

“The event brought together various service partners from 40 Leadenhall. The effort was further supported by Ellie Patel our community manager from 40 Leadenhall and Jordy Mukudi, CIS ESG manager.

The team gathered at 9am by the Oxo Tower for safety briefing and PPE distribution by First Mile. From there we covered the full stretch toward Waterloo Bridge and back meticulously cleaning the shoreline. We collected / removed plastic, broken glass, hazardous materials, and general waste within a short period. The estimated total waste removed amounts to about 56kg.

Our collective efforts have made improvement to beach appearance, safety, and the protection of Thames’ marine ecosystems. It was a bitterly cold morning however, what we achieved is totally worth it.”

Andrew Gough, 40 Leadenhall, Head of Security stated:

“This was our second beach clean along the south bank of the Thames in collaboration with First Mile. It’s a great opportunity to bring our different service partners together to work as a team to give back to our local area and help improve the environment. Every little, small deed makes a difference. The team at 40 Leadenhall have enjoyed this so much that we will now be doing this as a quarterly volunteering opportunity.”

Ellie Patel, 40 Leadenhall, JLL Community Manager stated:

“It was a great opportunity for various members of the 40 Leadenhall team to come together for collective good! Despite being a chilly day, I was proud to see the team rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in! It’s so rewarding to walk back along the beach at the end and see it looking clear and restored to its natural state, really showing the impact that we can have by giving up just an hour or so of time.”

Great work from everyone involved!

CIS was proud to support the Digital Skills Project 2026, with our ESG Manager and ESG Analyst participating in the judging panel, reinforcing our commitment to youth empowerment, digital inclusion, and the social value pillars of our ESG strategy.

Jordy Mukudi, ESG Manager stated:

“Being part of the judging panel was genuinely inspiring. Listening to young people speak so openly about issues like AI, mental health, trust in digital spaces, and global challenges reminded me how much insight and resilience this generation holds. Their creativity and honesty offered powerful lessons for all of us working to build safer, more inclusive and sustainable communities.”

Emerence Sepulchre ESG Analyst stated:

“Attending the Digital Skills Project 2026 was an absolute pleasure. Despite their nerves, the teens and young adults who presented solutions all conveyed passion, authenticity and determination. For many of them, English was not a first language, and each student I spoke to shared that it was their first time presenting like this. Seeing so much courage and creative problem-solving in the room emphasised the importance of improving the access to resources and jobs for all. I hope that more young people will be given opportunities like this to shine and demonstrate what a positive contribution they can make to the future.”

CIS WALKIE TALKIE CLIMB, 20 FENCHURCH STREET

In March, our ESG Analyst, Emerence Sepulchre, and Intelligence Researcher, Anushka Ranade, participated in the Great Ormond Street

Hospital Charity, Walkie Talkie Tower Climb raising over £1,500.

Emerence Sepulchre, ESG Analyst stated:

“Participating in the GOSH charity Walkie Talkie Tower Climb was so fun and an engaging way to fundraise. Anushka and I completed the 896 stair climb in 12 minutes, raised over £1500 as a team of two and brought three guests to enjoy the Sky Garden views with us. Each year, new children are diagnosed with serious conditions and life-threatening illnesses. GOSH helps fund research and support for patients, families and professionals. Not only was this a cause we were more than willing to support, but it took place at a site we provide security for and are familiar with. It was a nice challenge to take the stairs rather than the lifts, for once!”

Anushka Ranade, Intelligence Researcher, stated:

“The GOSH Walkie Talkie Tower Climb was such a fun and memorable challenge. Emerence and I tackled all 896 stairs in just 12 minutes and raised over £1,500 together, which made it even more special. Knowing the impact GOSH has on children and families gave us that extra motivation to keep going, and finishing at the Sky Garden with incredible views of London made the experience even more memorable.”

07. HEALTH AND SAFETY

ARE NEW WORKERS MORE LIKELY TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT?

“Statistics show that workers are just as likely to have an accident during the first six months as for the remainder of their working lives. Why is this, and what can you do to ensure that they don’t become a statistic in your workplace.”

Our CIS Health and Safety Induction Checklist can be found on the HUB.

THE NEED FOR LONE WORKERS TO FEEL PSYCHOLOGICALLY SAFE

Improving psychological safety

A recent survey has revealed that only a third of lone workers report safety concerns. Do they feel psychologically safe to speak up about issues or even halt work? What are some hidden issues that lone workers can face and what can you do to appease their concerns?

How do lone workers feel?

Digital lone worker systems have helped to completely redefine the management of lone workers. Industries have seen a shift away from traditional buddy systems or check in calls, to more robust devices which often provide 24/7 support via monitoring centres. These can help lone workers feel safer due to the reassurance that they may be alone but are always under surveillance. But whilst these devices may help workers feel physically more secure, 40% still claim to feel unsafe. What could be the reasons?

As only 30% report incidents, this may lead you to underestimate the real level of risk that lone workers face. Yet could this research also indicate that workers do not feel confident in speaking up; do they feel psychologically unsafe as well as physically?

Feeling psychologically alone

Feeling psychologically safe means, a worker would feel confident to speak up, chal-lenge unsafe conditions, ask questions, admit mistakes and provide honest feedback without fear of shame, ridicule or blame.

Workers may feel unable to provide feedback due to a negative safety culture and the problem with that is if workers feel that concerns are not acted upon, they may also feel unable to challenge unsafe conditions. Lone workers must also be allowed to ini-tiate a stop work authority at any time if their safety is compromised. Ensuring this is fine in principle, but they need to feel psychologically safe to use it. So how can or-ganisations enable a culture where lone workers feel psychologically safe?

Some lone worker incidents may be investigated, and no outcomes change as a result. But by not communicating any details to workers, raising concerns will dry up. Being proactive with responses to incidents and providing transparent communication may help improve feelings of psychological safety.

Tip. Anonymous reporting systems may help workers feel confident to speak up until improvements in safety culture are established. iTRUST via the HUB.

Tip. Establishing regular meetings with lone workers to discuss issues, rather than simply using incident reporting software, may help workers feel able to be more open.

Tip. Being proactive and asking for input and perspectives on lone working risks be-fore incidents occur may help employees feel more able to provide honest feedback.

Tip. Communicate policies and check understanding regularly, not during an induc-tion, so workers have opportunity to ask questions.

Tip. Review workload to ensure workers have the time to halt work, raise concerns and wait for a suitable response, without putting themselves at risk due to fear of blame for missed deadlines.

It is important that employees feel psychologically safe whilst lone working, as well as physically. Anonymous reporting systems, quick responses from manage-ment, regular communication of policies and proactively asking workers for input before incidents occur may all help towards creating a feeling of psychological safety.

INCREASE IN ATTACKS ON LONE WORKERS

There‘s been a rise in physical attacks and weapon-related incidents reported by workers over the past three years. How serious is the problem, and what can you do to reduce the risk to your lone workers?

The report

A report commissioned by SoloProtect aligns with broader trends in workplace vio-lence across the UK, particularly in high-risk industries like retail, healthcare, local government and transport. HSE statistics recorded 649,000 incidents of workplace violence in 2022/23. For the full report, see The next step .

Prioritise lone worker safety

Don’t just say it, do it. Prioritising the safety of lone workers is not just a legal re-quirement but also a moral obligation that enhances employee morale and productivi-ty. If a worker is faced with threatening behaviour, it may be difficult to phone 999 and this could inflame an already serious situation. You have a duty to ensure that the worker can seek assistance with ease.

Mental health implications

Working alone for extended periods can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness and increased stress levels, anxiety and depression. Additionally, lone workers may experi-ence heightened stress due to the responsibility of handling tasks independently, such as cash or alcohol transactions, without immediate support from others. When adding the threat of violence into that equation, it’s easy to see why lone working can have a significant impact on a person’s mental health.

Managing the risk

It’s essential to undertake a risk assessment so you can determine the likelihood and severity of a verbal or physical attack to protect your lone workers in so far as is rea-sonably practicable. Make sure you put measures in place to ensure the effectiveness of your lone working system by:

f Establishing a protocol for regular check-ins, whether through phone calls, text messages or dedicated monitoring systems

f Equipping them with reliable emergency communication tools like panic buttons, emergency phones, or mobile apps enabling immediate distress signal alerts

f Providing comprehensive training on using communication devices effec-tively. They should understand your policy. including emergency contact procedures and be aware of when and how to escalate issues for help. Make these guidelines easily accessible and ensure workers understand their re-porting responsibilities

f Conducting thorough investigations into reported incidents to identify root causes and implement appropriate corrective measures. Offer feedback on the actions taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Physical and verbal attacks are on the increase across all sectors, with retail alone reporting 1.2m cases in a year. Have a robust policy and controls, e.g. panic but-tons, in place, and train staff in how to respond in the face of adversity.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING

In January, CIS had the pleasure of collaborating with 40 Leadenhall on a Mental Health First Aid Training session as part of the pledge from our Health, Safety and Wellbeing Strategy. The training session was delivered by our CIS Trainer, Paula Orton.

Paula Orton – CIS Trainer stated:

“It was a morning of reflection and there were takeaways for both work and at home, the Mental Health training forms part of CIS’ ongoing journey to support and encourage mental health.

Thank you to all those who attended and participated in this event, we have already received fantastic feedback and we can’t wait to roll out many more sessions!

“Mental Health First Aid training teaches us that support doesn’t require perfection -it requires presence. At CIS we continue to empower our colleagues with the confidence, language, and human skills to step in early, connect authentically, and make mental wellbeing everyone’s business.”

A huge thank you to 40 Leadenhall for hosting this event!

On the 5th of February it was Time to Talk Day, dedicated to encouraging conversations about mental health and breaking the stigma surrounding it. Talking about mental health is a crucial step in tackling the isolation and discrimination that many people face, and Time to Talk Day provides an opportunity to spark these conversations.

Mental health issues affect millions of people every year, and talking about them can be the first step towards getting the support and help needed.
