Leadership in Africa is being defined by the leaders who see potential instead of limitations, are able to generate momentum through strategic clarity, insight and resilience instead of force, and are the managing directors. The managing directors are creating a new paradigm of leadership by merging local wisdom with global ambition and demonstrating that sustainability comes from vision and discipline. These leaders promote innovation that is based on the reality of the continent while also creating work environments that promote empowerment and accountability. Leadership by the managing directors is not only seen in the boardroom but also in the ways in which they have opened doors to emerging talent and promoted broader economic participation through their leadership. The managing directors are the stewards of transformation, and they understand that progress is not achieved by way of a sprint but instead through a generation of continued courage, consistency and character enabled by leadership to sustain a sustained effort. They also highlight the key message that the future of corporate Africa is currently being constructed one brick at a time by managing directors who prioritize purpose over prestige and impact over applause. At CIO Views, we honor these empowering leaders by dedicating this issue titled “Africa's Most Visionary Managing Directors Powering Business Growth in 2025” to them. Meet
Rodney Amematekpo, the Managing Director of Amtek Financial Solutions. From an early age, he developed a desire to assist others in realizing their potential. Upon joining AMTEK Financial Solutions, the firm focused on intermediary banking operations with banks as its primary partners. Rodney played a key role in transforming AMTEK into the leading Support and Advisor Structure (SAE) in Côte d'Ivoire under the BCEAO's SME program. The company introduced new services, including Mergers & Acquisitions and Valuation, while also partnering with investment funds. Recently, they launched Côte d'Ivoire's first Operating Partner service. The intent is to address clients' needs for operational support alongside financing. It focuses on key areas such as financial management, sales strategy, and business development. AMTEK aims to assist clients in acquiring stock market financing. They aspire to establish themselves as the market leader in fostering growth and wealth creation for SMEs and businesses throughout Côte d'Ivoire and the surrounding region.

Perception about Business Growth To Rodney, business growth transcends mere revenue and profitability. It fundamentally revolves around generating sustainable value. This includes providing employees with career development opportunities and offering clients transformative solutions that enhance their daily lives and contribute to their financial and social well-being. "True growth," in his view, "is defined by a company's assiduous pursuit of a positive and enduring legacy, cultivating a strong culture, and fostering trust." In the current African context, the emphasis on creating enduring organizations is increasingly vital. As African nations strive for economic sovereignty, Rodney's insightful perspective highlights the need to support innovative businesses. He sees them as means that can uplift an entire generation by creating sustainable job opportunities. A Real-World Influence in Leadership The person who leaves a lasting mark on Rodney's whole approach to leadership is his dad, Mr. Jacob AMEMATEKPO. He's the one who started AMTEK Financial Solutions. As a role model and a mentor, his influence has been absolutely priceless. What's kind of amazing is that early on in Rodney's time at AMTEK, he actually got to share an office with his father for several years. Even with a massive plate of responsibilities, Mr. AMEMATEKPO consistently managed to stay remarkably organized and totally collected even when things were hitting the fan.
There's this one moment that really sticks out. It was during a fundraising round that dragged on way longer than anyone had anticipated. Every single time they thought they were closing in on a win, some unexpected snag would pop up. However, Mr. Amematekpo deftly pinpointed the core issues and firmly guided the whole team toward the right fixes. Throughout the situation, he never lost his composure or his fierce determination. His absolute steadfastness is what eventually saw them through to a successful finish of that entire fundraising saga. That defining experience was like a lightbulb moment for Rodney. It really drove home the truth that effective leadership is so much more than just making the right call. No, it truly encompasses things like that unflappable calm, sheer perseverance, and a clear vision. Above all, the ability to energize and unite the team around one shared objective. That initial, deep-seated realization still shapes how Rodney leads today. The veteran makes a conscious effort to stay level-headed, project confidence, and always diligently search for solutions when things get tough. Simultaneously, he ensures the entire group is aligned accordingly.
AMTEK Bridges Compliance and Innovation "Compliance is not a constraint, but our foundation," says Rodney. AMTEK upholds a strong commitment to both professionalism and regulatory complaince. The company's high standards are formally established through its accreditation as a Banking Operations Intermediary by Minister in charge of Finance. Additionally, it has been selected by the BCEAO (Central Bank of West African States) as a Support and Advising Structure (SAE) for SMEs. Rodney explains that this dual recognition attests to its adherence to rigorous professional standards, granting the regulatory peace of mind necessary to prioritize innovation. Free from compliance concerns, which they ensure through continuous legal monitoring, AMTEK focuses on developing new strategies, notably via its Operating Partner service. This service moves beyond traditional financing by also serving as a strategic and operational partner, helping SMEs and businesses improve their management.

The Biggest Cha enges
in Business Growth Success without setback is rare. Every professional, businessman, or entrepreneur has to go through something or other. For Rodney, one of AMTEK's biggest challenges is raising awareness of its role as a broker in banking operations and as an Operating Partner in Côte d'Ivoire and across Africa, where the need for financial education is ubiquitous. To overcome this obstacle, the team has adopted a two-pronged strategic approach. It begins with structuring and professionalizing the activity. Then comes raising awareness and providing active training to SMEs and banks. AMTEK has initiated steps to organize and structure the brokers in the banking operations sector. The purpose is to create a professional body that fosters stronger collaboration among various brokers.
It will also strengthen the credibility of the profession with authorities and economic stakeholders. Rodney explains, "We don't simply wait for SMEs to come to us. We are actively working to educate them about the financing and support solutions available outside of traditional banking channels. We regularly organize training and introductory campaigns." This, he adds, allows SME leaders to understand better how a broker in banking operations (IOB) like AMTEK can be a key partner. By addressing these two fronts, like market structure and stakeholder awareness, AMTEK is transforming initial unawareness into an opportunity for education and leadership within the financial sector.
“Working with an Operating Partner means turning the experience of others into a powerful lever for your company's growth.”

The Core Values That Inspire Leadership The core values guiding his leadership are empathy and adaptability. Together, they have helped in shaping AMTEK's peoplecentered culture. It's this balanced mindset that recently earned him recognition among 'Africa's Most Visionary Managing Directors Powering Business Growth in 2025.' Empathy allows Rodney to build trusting and attentive relationships with both clients and colleagues. Being able to step into their shoes and grasp their challenges and expectations is an important ability for crafting genuinely customized solutions. Then there's adaptability. That is the secret to flourishing in an ecosystem characterized by all types of diversity among the companies AMTEK supports. His roles, both as an Operating Partner and a Banking Operations Broker, necessitate a deep comprehension of each sector's specific quirks. This allows him to fine-tune their methods to match the complex, real-world scenario of every single client. Rodney demonstrates these values in his day-to-day management. He is completely convinced that leading by example is the most effective form of leadership. He feels this demeanor is what truly galvanizes his colleagues toward both professional mastery and their own personal growth.
long days. Managing a business, being a husband, a father, and the President of a service club requires a great deal of discipline and rigorous organization. To remain effective, Rodney anticipates his tasks and plans his priorities well in advance. The role of an Operating Partner demands significant involvement, requiring a high level of concentration. He consciously tries to maintain this proactive attitude, a method that has proven quite successful for him so far. Amtek's Role in Africa's Financial Advancement Rodney believes that AMTEK contributes to financial inclusion and economic empowerment in Africa by breaking down traditional barriers and making financing more accessible and relevant for those who need it most: SMEs. He highlights that the core of their business as a Banking Operations Broker (BOI) is to bridge the gap between SMEs, often excluded from traditional banking channels, and sources of financing. They explore alternative funding options like investment funds, private equity, venture capital, etc. that are tailored to the specific needs and development stages of SMEs, particularly those emerging from the informal economy. They assist businesses in formalizing and professionalizing their loan applications. This indeed is a necessary step toward inclusion, as a well-structured SME becomes "bankable" or "investable." It opens the door to previously inaccessible capital.
A Typical Day, in Action! His day usually starts with a workout. It's a way for him to refocus before diving into the intense pace of work. Being physically fit helps him maintain his energy, especially on
Rodney shares that this development requires more than just a loan. Therefore, their Operating Partner model goes beyond financial advisory. They work closely with business leaders on both practical and strategic 16 | DECEMBER 2025
management. Their focus is on improving governance structures, internal processes, and market strategies so that businesses can concentrate on their core functions. They also guide SMEs toward better management, stronger reporting, and improved compliance. This helps them turn raised capital into sustainable, well-structured growth. These stronger SMEs, in effect, create jobs and local wealth. Powering Performance Through People To really ignite growth within an organization, you must have a workforce that feels both motivated and truly fulfilled. Rodney feels, "sustainable performance naturally arises from a culture where every single person feels heard, supported, and genuinely appreciated." That's precisely why he makes a point of understanding his team's specific requirements. And, just as importantly, delivering practical solutions that pave the way for shared success. For example, at AMTEK, much importance is attached to continuous professional development through ongoing training initiatives. He's also introduced flexible work arrangements, which, of course, help everyone better harmonize their career aspirations with their personal lives. What's more? He dedicates significant attention to mental health and general well-being on the job. This line of business can be quite taxing sometimes, Rodney knows it. Providing the team with opportunities to recharge while simultaneously honing their individual capabilities is a must here. That, to him, is a profound source of both motivation and increased output across the board.

Most Proud Achievement Having established AMTEK Financial Solutions as the leading Support and Advising Structure (SAE) for SMEs in Côte d'Ivoire, and having received recognition from leading financial institutions that seek their feedback, is a significant achievement for Rodney. AMTEK is also the first company to offer Operating Partner services in Côte d'Ivoire. Its support contributed to one of its clients winning the National Excellence Award in Côte d'Ivoire. Rodney considers operational support as an Operating Partner an ideal solution for generating growth and wealth for businesses across Côte d'Ivoire and Africa. This approach directly contributes to the expansion of African companies and helps increase the GDP of their respective nations. Work-life Balance Technique Rodney acknowledges, "Maintaining a work-life balance is CIO VIEWS | 17
“To be a major player in the segment of Banking Operations Intermediaries in the WAEMU.”

Finally, Seize the Local Opportunity. Rodney highlights, "Africa needs solutions tailored to its unique realities. Future leaders must move away from imported Western models that overlook the informal economy or local culturalcontexts." He believes innovation must serve inclusion. By fully understanding local needs, leaders can design financing and support mechanisms that unlock the potential of traditionally excluded entrepreneurs. The Legacy that Lasts
a real challenge, especially when you're an Operating Partner and aware that your long-term health and well-being impact the company's performance, directly." That's precisely why flexibility is so critical to Rodney. He makes an effort to maximize remote work whenever the situation permits, especially while he's traveling for business. In fact, he uses those business trips to carve out periods for relaxation or a little leisure time. This approach, to him, is the key to maintaining his efficiency while still setting aside time for himself that he needs. Achieving this balance is tough, particularly when you have such a deep passion for your work. Thus, Rodney takes a systematic approach to scheduling. He ensures that he intentionally carves out time for leisure and family. These moments, he finds, are absolutely fundamental to his personal equilibrium and, ultimately, to his professional performance.
Advice for the Financial Aspirants Rodney's advice to future leaders in the African financial sector is precise. He advises, "Make an impact your strategic compass." He emphasizes that leaders should focus on distributing capital and designing solutions that bring real change and empower key economic players across the continent. To achieve this in practice, Rodney recommends two main approaches. First, Transforming Finance into Sustainable Development. He believes true leadership lies in the ability to think beyond conventional boundaries. Leaders must build teams capable of supporting SMEs in structuring their growth and improving their daily operations, essentially becoming true Operational Partners. This means adopting a longterm vision by prioritizing investments and solutions that enhance governance, resilience, and innovation capacity—not merely those that guarantee quick returns. 18 | DECEMBER 2025
Rodney hopes to leave behind a legacy that transcends the success of AMTEK Financial Solutions. He wants to be remembered as a catalyst for a new generation of economic champions, particularly within SMEs. His most meaningful legacy would be making financing mechanisms more equitable, transparent, and accessible for SMEs. He wants AMTEK to be recognized as proof that it is possible to build a solid and compliant financial institution. He also aims to leave behind a structured and respected profession of Banking Operations Brokers. Ultimately, Rodney hopes the Operating Partner model will become a reference point, showing that the transfer of management skills is just as vital as the transfer of funds. He aspires to inspire a new wave of African finance leaders who dare to put innovation in the service of inclusion.

Kunal Chandaria Cra ing a New Narrative: Kunal Chandaria’s Vision for Packaging Innovation

n the vibrant world of packaging, where tradition meets innovation, Kunal Chandaria has emerged as a transformative leader. His journey from a family-run paper bag business to founding Digital Packaging Innovations Holdings Ltd. (DPI) is a testament to his vision and resilience. Kunal’s path was paved by his extensive experience in the industry and a drive to infuse new technologies into the packaging sector in East Africa. From Tradition to Innovation - The Birth of DPI Kunal’s story begins with a solid foundation in the family business, Paperbags Ltd., which had been a cornerstone in East and Central Africa’s paper bag industry since 1967. "After working for 13 years in the family business, my uncle and father encouraged me to explore new opportunities," Kunal recalls. This pivotal moment led him to consider how he could leverage his industry connections and knowledge in a new venture. His deep involvement in the printing industry, including co-founding the Convertors and Printers Association of Kenya (CPAK), positioned him well for this transition. A significant turning point came when Kunal, intrigued by the potential of digital printing, decided to invest in the HP Indigo 20,000 wide web. "The decision to invest in such an
advanced machine was not taken lightly. We spent nearly two years researching and visiting customer sites globally to ensure it was the right move," he explains. This investment not only marked DPI’s entry into a new technological frontier but also highlighted Kunal’s commitment to revolutionizing packaging in Sub-Saharan Africa. Challenges and Motivations - Introducing Digital Printing The motivations behind introducing wide web digital printing were clear to Kunal. "We wanted to enable brands to showcase their products with high-quality packaging, which was often inaccessible due to high minimum order quantities (MOQs) with existing printers," he asserts. Despite the higher costs associated with digital printing, DPI’s approach focused on providing customized solutions that could enhance the market presence of Kenyan startups. However, the journey was fraught with challenges. The significant cost difference between digital and conventional packaging, coupled with the need to build trust as newcomers in the label and flexible packaging sector, posed substantial hurdles. "We faced a steep learning curve, especially as we ventured into labels and flexible packaging for the first time," Kunal admits.

KEBS is not just a government agency. It is the heart of Kenya's quality infrastructure – a national trust, a guardian of quality, and a cornerstone of economic progress. So, for Esther, the decision to join KEBS was more than a career move. “It was a calling,” she says. It offered her a platform to champion quality on a national scale.
Esther's journey toward KEBS was not paved with a singular, momentous "Aha!" moment. It was a “gradual sprouting of seeds” planted early in her life, nurtured by experiences, and fueled by a burning passion for quality and excellence. “My upbringing played a crucial role,” she says.

Esther has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in dairy science and food technology from Egerton University. Her time at the University was not just about formulas and lab analysis. For her, it was a thrilling exploration of food science, the intricate interplay of technology and quality, and the critical role standards play in safeguarding both producers and consumers. “This wasn't just knowledge; it was a calling,” she says. And she says that her experience served as the “real” crucible. She learned the nitty-gritty of quality control, the art of navigating diverse opinions, and the pressure of enforcing standards. She also understood the power of collaboration. “My career journey took the conventional path,” Esther points out. “I climbed the career ladder through all the staircases; I never took the

dynamic force in three key areas. First, it is poised to become a catalyst for economic growth by establishing world-class testing and certification facilities that actively promote Kenyan exports. Esther explains that this strategic initiative is geared towards enhancing the global competitiveness of Kenyan products and driving economic development. Second, she envisions KEBS as a guardian of public safety, instilling trust and confidence in the Kenyan market. By upholding stringent standards, KEBS will play a pivotal role in ensuring the quality and safety of products circulating in the market, thereby safeguarding consumer interests and maintaining market integrity, according to Esther. Third, she sees KEBS championing inclusivity by engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, from small
businesses to major corporations. This approach seeks to ensure that the voices of all sectors are heard in the standards development process. KEBS's transformative vision rests on three fundamental pillars: strategic partnerships, technological innovation, and human capital development. Esther underscores that through actively seeking and cultivating partnerships, embracing cutting-edge technology to modernize operations, and prioritizing the development of a skilled workforce, KEBS aims to be at the forefront of shaping Kenya's quality landscape. organization with global best practices, fostering innovation in their processes, and cultivating collaborative partnerships with industry stakeholders. Under her leadership, KEBS has integrated internationally recognized standards, adopted cutting-edge technologies, and built a synergistic ecosystem that promotes shared goals. Esther has also enhanced the organization's ability to adapt to the dynamic landscape of quality assurance by focusing on developing a skilled and motivated workforce. “These efforts collectively position KEBS as a forward-thinking and credible institution, actively contributing to the economic development and safety landscape of Kenya,” she says.
MD KEBS DURING THE ISO ANNUAL MEETING IN BRISBANE
In line with KEBS's vision of becoming a global leader in standards-based solutions for trade and sustainable development, the organization has taken a leadership role at the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO), with Esther serving on the governing council. Kenya is the Chair of the ISO Committee on Conformity Assessment (CASCO) as well as a participant in the Technical Management Board of ISO. Esther points out that KEBS is the Codex Contact Point (CCP) for Kenya, and she has made certain that her organization plays an instrumental role in ensuring the active participation of Kenya at the global
body, responsible for setting international food standards. And Kenya is also the host for the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO), a body responsible for harmonization of African standards, conformity assessment and procedures in order to reduce technical barriers to trade and promote intra-African and international trade as well as enhance the industrialization of Africa. KEBS plays a critical role at the governing council for ARSO, where Esther serves as a council member. achieve the KEBS mandate which translates to building a robust ecosystem where quality and safety are not just aspirational ideals, but the very foundation of Kenyan industry.” Challenges and True Rewards As a woman of color, Esther has faced moments where navigating established systems built on different perspectives or foundations felt like climbing a steeper mountain. She, however, has never allowed such moments to dampen her spirit, because, according to her, it has also been a journey of immense experience, personal growth, and a chance to break the ceiling and pave new paths for others like her.

Over the years, Esther has received numerous trophies and accolades. But what she values the most is the collective realization that her presence, voice, and perspective enrich the conversation around quality and safety. “Every time I contribute to a policy that empowers many small and medium enterprises in Kenya, every time I challenge existing norms to champion inclusivity in technical committees, every time I see a young generation, persons who are abled differently step into this field with a spark in their eyes – that's my true reward,” she says. Now, there is a greater recognition that diversity is not just a box to tick; it is a source of strength, a wellspring
of fresh ideas, and a vital step towards building a more just and equitable world where quality standards serve everyone, not just a select few, according to Esther. But, despite all that, challenges remain. “Unconscious bias lingers, and sometimes, the climb feels steeper than usual,” Esther says. “But the victories, the progress made, the lives touched – these are the fuel that keeps me going.” “I believe that by sharing my experiences, advocating for inclusivity, and mentoring others like me, we can create a future where the industry reflects the vibrant mix of humanity it serves,” she adds.

Message to Aspiring Leaders In a message to aspiring corporate leaders, Esther says, “Lead with passion, not just position. Let your purpose be your compass, your integrity your shield, and your empathy your guiding light.” She also encourages them to challenge the status quo, champion diversity, and embrace the responsibility that comes with leadership. “Remember, the true measure of success isn't the climb to the top, but the positive impact you create along the way,” she says.

Boundaries, Balance, and Building Apex Information Systems Throughout her career, Karen has encountered situations where she was expected to shoulder an excessive workload and a weighty burden of responsibility. With maturity came the realization that she needed to carve out space for herself, not just in terms of time but also in preserving her energy. “Initiating Apex Information Systems was a part of this transformative process,” she says. “Part of my motivation was to create a workspace that would support my overall well-being. The ability to work in a bright, comfortable environment with easy access to nature and wholesome food has become a daily source of joy for me.” Karen has experienced moments of isolation and endured highly stressful periods independently. “I view these experiences as key moments of growth along my career path,” she says. “They have taught me the importance of asserting myself, setting boundaries, honing my communication skills, and cultivating collaborative relationships with others.” From Architecture to Leadership and Transformation Reflecting on her journey, Karen recalls, “Studying architecture required intense focus and unwavering determination. Subsequently, leveraging this knowledge to launch a new career as a writer was a pivotal step that eventually led to where I am now. It has been an immensely rewarding journey.” Among the significant highlights along the way, she mentions her leadership of a dedicated and resource-constrained team, primarily consisting of exceptional women. Together, they achieved a remarkable
success in successfully organizing and executing the International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress, held in Durban in August 2014. This accomplishment stands out as a testament to their collective effort and dedication. Karen explains that a drive to effect positive change remains at the core of her daily motivation. “I have always had a strong desire to challenge established systems. Almost every project I have undertaken has been fueled by a deep-seated aspiration to raise awareness of how things can be transformed to the benefit of both people and the planet.” In her current role, Karen focuses primarily on client liaison, business development, and project management. The sectors in which she works demand a distinctive skill set for communicating technical information and intricate concepts in a manner that resonates with a wider audience. As a result, she maintains a rigorous approach to ensuring that decisions and deliverables are aligned with her clients' unique visions and objectives.

People, Openness, and Empowerment Karen's leadership philosophy is grounded in principles of openness, collaboration, and recognition of hard work. She strives to set a positive example and provide opportunities and guidance where needed. She understands that even the smallest expression of interest or encouragement, or a seemingly minor intervention, can have a significant impact on someone else's life. For Karen, people are at the heart of her business's success. She invests time in identifying the right individuals with the skills required to meet her clients' needs and ensures they understand the value she places on their expertise. She takes great pride in cultivating enduring relationships with long-term clients and colleagues, relationships founded on mutual respect and integrity. She strongly believes in leveraging each person's individual strengths. Team members are entrusted with substantial responsibilities but are also given support and the freedom to execute tasks in their unique way. She
wholeheartedly supports remote work and flexible hours and actively promotes self-care among her team. Yoga, Resilience, and Women's Empowerment Karen's daily routine commences with 15 to 45 minutes of yoga, a nonnegotiable part of her day. She regards yoga as the cornerstone of maintaining a composed and positive mindset, even in the face of the most challenging circumstances. “Building a business demands qualities like courage, resilience, and self-discipline, along with the ability to maintain composure under pressure,” she observes. “These attributes are developed over time and require daily practice.” Her motivation is fueled by intellectually stimulating work in a sector where the landscape is constantly evolving. Karen also draws inspiration from the women she collaborates with, be they clients, colleagues, or friends. These women, like her, are committed to building something of significance and must strike a balance between personal well-being, family responsibilities, and work demands. She has cultivated fulfilling relationships with several female clients, engaging in mutual support during difficult times, celebrating each other's accomplishments, and sharing in one another's successes. Philosophy of Success For Karen, success encompasses any action undertaken with enthusiasm, leading to a sense of fulfillment and overall well-being, irrespective of whether it attains the intended outcome.
