Building Bridges, Not Barriers Devika Jagarlamudi Transforming Digital Mental Health Care

S

ome people study problems, while others decide to solve them. For Devika Jagarlamudi, Product Manager at CurerTech, the turning point comes when she realizes groundbreaking research often never reaches those who need it most. “I've witnessed countless opportunities lost because incredible research breakthroughs sit unused. The systems simply can't deliver them to clinicians,” she says. “Why keep studying the problem when I could build the solution?” That realization becomes the foundation of her career in product management, where she turns data and innovation into tools that make a real “Healthcare needs people who understand both clinical realities and technological possibilities.”

management is driven by purpose. With a strong healthcare and data background, she realizes her true impact comes from shaping outcomes rather than observing them. “My background is my secret advantage,” she explains. “I can translate between developers and clinicians because I genuinely understand both worlds. At CurerTech, I know which data truly matters for patient care versus bureaucratic noise.” Her research training instills one essential question: Does this actually work? It guides every product her team builds. “We're not creating software for its own sake,” she says. “We're building tools that translate what helps people into something providers can actually use when it matters most.” What Innovation Really Means

From Research to Product: Turning Insight into Impact

For Devika, innovation in mental health care is not about complexity. “Innovation means making things simpler, not more complicated,” she says. Many therapists still use outdated record systems designed for general medicine, slowing their work. “Therapists are drowning in software that fights them instead of helping them.”

a therapist leaves work thinking about their patient's breakthrough instead of the software's bugs, we've innovated. If they're still clicking through endless screens while someone waits for help, we've failed,” she asserts. Real innovation supports human connection. Technology should evolve with healthcare, adapting to new treatments and insights rather than holding clinicians back. Balancing Compliance and Experience In healthcare technology, compliance and usability can complement each other. “Compliance and good user experience aren't enemies,” she says. Her experience with HIPAAcompliant systems teaches her security and usability can coexist when built into the foundation from the start. “The future of healthcare means technology that's secure and effortless to use,” she explains. “When providers can focus on care instead of worrying about compliance checkboxes, everyone wins, especially patients.” Building Trust Through Technology One of Devika's biggest challenges at CurerTech is leading the creation of a next-generation AI-integrated electronic medical record system. The hardest part, she says, is earning providers' trust. “Many clinicians fear AI will complicate their work. But when they see it simplify documentation and highlight meaningful insights, they become supporters,” she shares. “This teaches me that great technology sells itself through results,” she adds. “When providers spend less time on paperwork and

our billing team talks to patient portal builders, real solutions emerge,” she says.

Fostering Collaboration at CurerTech

This approach ensures everyone understands how their work impacts the larger care journey, reinforcing the mission: to make life easier for providers and better for patients.

CurerTech structures teams around integration rather than traditional departments. Developers, clinicians, billing experts, and patient portal builders work side by side. “Collaboration isn't optional, it's foundational,” she explains. “It's messy sometimes, startups are, but we're intentional about it. When our developers sit with clinicians and

Personalizing Care with AI Among her proudest achievements, Devika highlights how CurerTech uses AI to personalize care. “We've integrated pharmacogenomics so clinicians can prescribe medications based on a patient's actual genetic

profile instead of guessing,” she says. Their AI identifies patterns across treatment responses, recommending interventions at the right moments and adjusting care plans in real time. “A clinic tells us patients are staying engaged longer because the care feels truly personalized, not like being processed through a system,” she shares. “When someone gets the right medication the first time because we understand their biology, when technology creates human connection instead of getting in the way, that's what I'm proud of,” she adds. Advice for Future Health Tech Leaders When asked for advice for aspiring product managers, Devika says, “Truly understand the clinical world you're building for. Shadow providers and learn their workflows. You can't solve problems you don't deeply understand.” She believes healthcare's complexity drives better solutions. “Regulations and clinical requirements aren't obstacles, they push you toward better design,” she explains. “Remember, you're building for people, providers using your tools and patients depending on them. That responsibility should guide every decision.”

“We're building tools that translate what we know helps people into something providers can actually use when it matters most.”

treat more efficiently, helping people reclaim their lives.” She hopes her journey inspires others from clinical backgrounds to explore how technology can expand their impact. “Healthcare needs more people who understand both sides, the clinical realities and what's possible with technology,” she explains.

The Future of Mental Health Devika envisions a future where mental health care blends technology and empathy seamlessly. “Diagnostics must move beyond symptom checklists, treatments must become personalized, and technology must empower therapeutic relationships rather than replace them,” she says. She believes digital tools should act as silent partners, providing therapists with real-time support. “The promise of digital innovation in mental health lies not in replacing human connection,” she explains, “but in weaving technology and compassion together.” Her vision is a smarter, more humane system that enhances care. A Legacy of Compassionate Progress

“Legacy isn't about individual recognition,” she reflects. “It's about the ripple effect. If the systems I help build enable clinicians to provide better care to millions, that impact extends far beyond anything I directly touch.” Conclusion: Innovation with Heart Devika Jagarlamudi's journey shows that innovation and empathy belong together. From clinical research to digital transformation, she remains guided by one question: Does this actually work for the people who need it most? Her story reminds us that the best technology strengthens human care. By bridging science and compassion, Devika continues to build systems that improve healthcare while keeping it human.

For Devika, success is measured by impact, not recognition. “Mental health challenges have become an epidemic across every age group,” she says. “My aspiration is to empower clinicians to diagnose and

“Legacy isn't about individual recognition – it's about the ripple effect of helping millions through better care.”

Mohit Gupta Mohit Gupta on Leading with Purpose, Agility, and Impact in Global Finance

I

n the world of global finance, leadership is not merely about bottom-line outcomes on a balance sheet anymore. It is about understanding individuals, navigating shifting markets, and making choices that merge strategy with empathy. Mohit Gupta, Senior Vice President at Apex Group Ltd, makes that sort of leadership a reality. His path from a small town in India to leading business strategy throughout the Middle East is an inspiring example of what it means to lead with intention, clarity, and impact. “Growing up in Rampur, India, taught me the value of resilience and empathy,” Mohit reflects. These early lessons have remained central to his approach, even as he took on major responsibilities at global companies like Samsung Electronics, Mastercard and Western Union. Mohit has diverse industry experience—commodities, electronics, real estate, payments, remittances, and fund administration—and has a strong network and has been a member of BNI, Toastmasters, and the Malt Society of Arabia. With over 32,000-plus LinkedIn followers and having touched so many lives as a mentor and guide, Mohit is blessed to be in the UAE's

multicultural and cosmopolitan environment. His experience spans more than 20 years and multiple industries, each adding to his ability to lead across cultures and build trust in fast-moving environments. Shaping Growth at Apex Group When Mohit joined Apex Group in 2024, he was charged with overseeing sales and business development for the region. His job is far more than targets and figures. He collaborates closely with country teams to ensure that Apex's overall strengths are matched with the region's particular requirements and regulations. "So far, we have won multibillion dollars' worth of new mandates," he reports. "We have also established strong relationships with family offices, sovereign wealth funds, hedge funds, and private equity firms." These relationships, he says, are founded on consistency, strategic clarity, and knowing what clients actually need to grow. Apex Group's strength to provide a full suite of services under one umbrella is central to this success. Fund administration, ESG advisory, compliance, and digital solutions are all offered on

a single platform. This assists clients with lowering complexity and concentrating on long-term results. “What sets us apart is our ability to act locally while delivering at a global scale,” he explains. “We understand what is important in the region and tailor our approach accordingly.” Making Smart Decisions in HighStakes Situations In roles that demand fast and highimpact decisions, Mohit believes the key is clarity. “In high-pressure environments, waiting for perfect information can slow progress,” he says. “I make decisions based on what is available, after consulting key people, and stay ready to adapt if needed.” His experience at Mastercard, where he oversaw cross-border payment business in over 80 countries, shaped him into a leader who takes this stance. There, he managed from issues with compliance to evolving customer needs. Through the experience, he was forced to believe in his instincts, stay close to the facts and always have the bigger picture in sight. “The most powerful strategy in any business is to lead with purpose and execute with precision.” Navigating Career Transitions with Confidence One of the standout moments in Mohit's career was a transition from real estate to financial services. Going from CEO of Wall Street Property to a regional leadership post at Western Union meant not only a change of knowledge but also of mind.

I needed to re-skill, adapt and accept new degrees of complexity," he says. Coordinating profit and loss statements, driving digital transformation and introducing new products in over 80 countries required technical know-how and cultural sensitivity. It was an experience that eventually made him a more adaptable and reflective leader.

26 | DECEMBER 2025

"It taught me that growth tends to occur beyond your comfort zone," he adds. Finding Balance Through Focus and Practice In senior leadership positions, balance is not doing less. For Mohit, it is doing the most important things. "I schedule my time according to

outcomes, not hours," he explains. He reserves each week for reflection, learning and creative activity. His participation in Toastmasters, where he achieved a Competent Communicator certificate, has given him mental lucidity and articulation. These habits assist him in remaining stable when handling country portfolios and overseeing large teams. "Leaders must remain sharp, grounded, and receptive to development," he says. The Role of Mentorship in His Leadership Journey Mentorship played a great role in defining Mohit's leadership values. At a young age in his professional career, he learned from experienced professionals who urged him to think globally and act locally. That guidance has remained with him and impacts how he mentors people even today. "I work with early-stage entrepreneurs and up-and-coming professionals, particularly within the DIFC startup scene," he says. "I assist them in creating product strategies, positioning themselves for investor discussions and deal structuring." Mentorship is a mutual venture for him. It keeps him engaged with fresh ideas and issues, while providing others with access to his experience. "Mentorship is not a transaction," he says. "It is a collaborative investment in growth." Staying Ahead of Industry Change The financial industry is changing fast, and Mohit thinks one has to keep ahead of change on a going-concern basis. He goes to industry conferences

regularly, tracks global trends in regulation and remains closely connected with compliance and fintech specialists. "Being ahead of changes such as tokenization, digital assets, ESG regulation and digital identity infrastructures has been imperative at Mastercard and Apex," he adds. He believes trendspotting is not only a practice, but also a leadership art that keeps the business current and competitive. “Great leaders don't just predict the future, they build the systems and teams that shape it.”

“Every market, no matter how complex, responds to authenticity and long-term thinking.”

Creating Impact that Endures Despite achieving so many milestones, one of the most valued achievements by Mohit is what he accomplished at Mastercard, spearheading cross-border services. The outcomes involved robust revenue growth and multimilliondollar alliances. But most important was the broader impact of the work. “We contributed to expanded financial access, electronic-enabled money transfers, and backed institutions in emerging markets," he explains. "It was a mix of business contribution and social impact, which is what I attempt to deliver in every role." This balance of commercial achievement and positive contribution is a thread throughout his career. It's an indication of his belief that leaders should be judging success not only in terms of figures, but in the change, they assist in creating. Advice to Upcoming Leaders When asked for his advice to young

CIO VIEWS | 27

professionals seeking to develop their careers in global finance, Mohit responds with candor and certainty. "Stay curious," he advises. "Lifelong learners are the best leaders. And learn the basics. Know how business, regulation, and risk interact. Be clear in your communication and take charge before anyone gives you a title." Most importantly, he points to integrity. "In finance, trust is the most valuable thing you will ever carry," he says. A Legacy of Connection and Purpose When asked how he might summarize his legacy, Mohit provides a brief but compelling sentence. "He built bridges between industries, people and purpose and left every space better than he found it," he says. It is a demonstration of a leadership odyssey characterized not only by success, but by values, vision, and an abiding commitment to advancement.

Karen Eicker Navigating Entrepreneurship and Empowerment

K

aren Eicker, the Managing Director at Apex Information Systems, developed a keen interest in digital communications early in her career. As a graduate of the Wits School of Architecture & Planning, her background is rooted in corporate architecture, and she has been a prolific contributor to South Africa's leading publications on the built environment and infrastructure for the past two decades. In recognition of her exceptional work, she received the SAPOA Property Feature Journalist of the Year award in 2010. Karen is part of a generation of women entrepreneurs who have had to navigate their paths in a patriarchal society. She strives to inspire younger women to stand up for themselves, trust their capabilities, create the space they need, and, when necessary, challenge the prevailing norms. As an entrepreneur, Karen acknowledges the support and kindness she has received from others who believed in her, provided opportunities, and generously shared their time, energy, and wisdom. She is committed to paying this kindness forward,

particularly to the women she has the privilege of working with. Karen's contributions extend beyond the entrepreneurial sphere and include serving as Commissary General of the 25th International Union of Architects World Congress, UIA2014 Durban. In recognition of her significant contributions to this event, she was honored with a President's Certificate of Meritorious Service by the South African Institute of Architects. Innovating Communication for Diverse Sectors Apex Information Systems was established to fill a void in the market, focusing on providing communication and specialized web development services primarily to professionals in the fields of architecture, engineering, and the built environment. Over time, the company's clientele has expanded to encompass a broad spectrum of diverse sectors, with nature conservation being a significant addition. “We mostly work with clients who are innovators and thought leaders in their respective fields. I am constantly inspired by their insights and different

approaches to addressing some of the built and natural environments' complex challenges. Every day is a learning opportunity.” Led by Karen, the team at Apex Information Systems possesses the ability to combine innovation, technical expertise, production capabilities, and an unwavering commitment to realizing their clients' visions. They excel in creating customized communication campaigns that effectively and efficiently target their clients' intended audiences. Their comprehensive services encompass strategic reviews and consultations, brand development and management, web development, multimedia content creation, writing and editing, as well as digital marketing. Boundaries, Balance, and Building Apex Information Systems Throughout her career, Karen has encountered situations where she was expected to shoulder an excessive workload and a weighty burden of responsibility. With maturity came the realization that she needed to carve out space for herself, not just in terms of time but also in preserving her energy. “Initiating Apex Information Systems was a part of this transformative process,” she says. “Part of my motivation was to create a workspace that would support my overall well-being. The ability to work in a bright, comfortable environment with easy access to nature and wholesome food has become a daily source of joy for me.” Karen has experienced moments of isolation and endured highly stressful periods independently. “I view these experiences as key moments of growth along my career path,” she says. “They have taught me the importance of asserting myself, setting boundaries, honing my communication skills, and cultivating

collaborative relationships with others.” From Architecture to Leadership and Transformation Reflecting on her journey, Karen recalls, “Studying architecture required intense focus and unwavering determination. Subsequently, leveraging this knowledge to launch a new career as a writer was a pivotal step that eventually led to where I am now. It has been an immensely rewarding journey.” Among the significant highlights along the way, she mentions her leadership of a dedicated and resource-constrained team, primarily consisting of exceptional women. Together, they achieved a remarkable success in successfully organizing

and executing the International Union of Architects (UIA) World Congress, held in Durban in August 2014. This accomplishment stands out as a testament to their collective effort and dedication. Karen explains that a drive to effect positive change remains at the core of her daily motivation. “I have always had a strong desire to challenge established systems. Almost every project I have undertaken has been fueled by a deep-seated aspiration to raise awareness of how things can be transformed to the benefit of both people and the planet.” In her current role, Karen focuses primarily on client liaison, business development, and project management. The sectors in which

she works demand a distinctive skill set for communicating technical information and intricate concepts in a manner that resonates with a wider audience. As a result, she maintains a rigorous approach to ensuring that decisions and deliverables are aligned with her clients' unique visions and objectives. People, Openness, and Empowerment Karen's leadership philosophy is grounded in principles of openness, collaboration, and recognition of hard work. She strives to set a positive example and provide opportunities and guidance where needed. She understands that even the smallest expression of interest or encouragement, or a seemingly minor intervention, can have a significant impact on someone else's life. For Karen, people are at the heart of her business's success. She invests time in identifying the right individuals with the skills required to meet her clients' needs and ensures they understand the value she places on their expertise. She takes great pride in cultivating enduring relationships with long-term clients and colleagues, relationships founded on mutual respect and integrity. She strongly believes in leveraging each person's individual strengths. Team members are entrusted with substantial responsibilities but are also given support and the freedom to execute tasks in their unique way. She wholeheartedly supports remote work and flexible hours and actively promotes self-care among her team.

Yoga, Resilience, and Women's Empowerment Karen's daily routine commences with 15 to 45 minutes of yoga, a nonnegotiable part of her day. She regards yoga as the cornerstone of maintaining a composed and positive mindset, even in the face of the most challenging circumstances. “Building a business demands qualities like courage, resilience, and self-discipline, along with the ability to maintain composure under pressure,” she observes. “These attributes are developed over time and require daily practice.” Her motivation is fueled by intellectually stimulating work in a sector where the landscape is constantly evolving. Karen also draws inspiration from the women she collaborates with, be they clients, colleagues, or friends. These women, like her, are committed to building something of significance and must strike a balance between personal well-being, family responsibilities, and work demands. She has cultivated fulfilling relationships with several female clients, engaging in mutual support during difficult times, celebrating each other's accomplishments, and sharing in one another's successes. Philosophy of Success For Karen, success encompasses any action undertaken with enthusiasm, leading to a sense of fulfillment and overall well-being, irrespective of whether it attains the intended outcome. She says, “I believe that doing something that is meaningful to CIO VIEWS | 33

you is the foundation for a fulfilled and successful work life. Do what you're passionate about and work won't feel like a chore. For me, this involves raising awareness and fostering discussions around creating sustainable and regenerative systems for future generations and nature to thrive.” Empowering Advice for Aspiring Women Leaders Karen's advice to aspiring women leaders is invaluable. She encourages them not to be afraid of asking questions, emphasizing that what might appear as a simple or even silly question at first can often lead to new insights and perspectives, benefiting both the questioner and the person providing the response. Karen also underscores the importance of mentorship throughout her own career. “Having mentors who were genuinely committed to helping me achieve my full potential has given me the confidence and openmindedness to venture into uncertain territories. I strongly urge aspiring women leaders to seek help and guidance when needed, whether from a colleague, friend, or a business coach.” She points out that many successful businesswomen have encountered similar challenges, and that knowledge and practical solutions are available when required. The support is there; it's a matter of reaching out and making use of it.

Kunal Chandaria Crafting a New Narrative: Kunal Chandaria's Vision for Packaging Innovation

I

n the vibrant world of packaging, where tradition meets innovation, Kunal Chandaria has emerged as a transformative leader. His journey from a family-run paper bag business to founding Digital Packaging Innovations Holdings Ltd. (DPI) is a testament to his vision and resilience. Kunal's path was paved by his extensive experience in the industry and a drive to infuse new technologies into the packaging sector in East Africa.

A significant turning point came when Kunal, intrigued by the potential of digital printing, decided to invest in the HP Indigo 20,000 wide web. "The decision to invest in such an advanced machine was not taken lightly. We spent nearly two years researching and visiting customer sites globally to ensure it was the right move," he explains. This investment not only marked DPI's entry into a new technological frontier but also highlighted Kunal's commitment to revolutionizing packaging in Sub-Saharan Africa.

From Tradition to Innovation - The Birth of DPI Kunal's story begins with a solid foundation in the family business, Paperbags Ltd., which had been a cornerstone in East and Central Africa's paper bag industry since 1967. "After working for 13 years in the family business, my uncle and father encouraged me to explore new opportunities," Kunal recalls. This pivotal moment led him to consider how he could leverage his industry connections and knowledge in a new venture. His deep involvement in the printing industry, including co-founding the Convertors and Printers Association of Kenya (CPAK), positioned him well for this transition.

Challenges and Motivations - Introducing Digital Printing The motivations behind introducing wide web digital printing were clear to Kunal. "We wanted to enable brands to showcase their products with highquality packaging, which was often inaccessible due to high minimum order quantities (MOQs) with existing printers," he asserts. Despite the higher costs associated with digital printing, DPI's approach focused on providing customized solutions that could enhance the market presence of Kenyan startups. However, the journey

was fraught with challenges. The significant cost difference between digital and conventional packaging, coupled with the need to build trust as newcomers in the label and flexible packaging sector, posed substantial hurdles. "We faced a steep learning curve, especially as we ventured into labels and flexible packaging for the first time," Kunal admits. Forging a Path Forward Leadership and Industry Impact Kunal Chandaria's journey in leadership and innovation has been profoundly shaped by his experiences with Paperbags Ltd. and Conros Corporation in Canada. "Working in the family business taught me the importance of relationships and innovation. My time at Conros Corporation exposed me to how large corporates operate in North America, further honing my leadership skills," he reflects. This diverse background has enabled Kunal to cultivate a culture of creativity and progress at Digital Packaging Innovations Holdings Ltd. (DPI). At DPI, he leads a young, dynamic team that propels the company forward with fresh perspectives and innovative solutions. A significant milestone in Kunal's career was the founding of the Convertors and Printers Association of Kenya (CPAK). "The driving force behind founding CPAK was to address the taxing issues and costrelated challenges within our industry," he explains. By tackling these critical issues, CPAK has not only helped reduce paper duties but also promoted industry collaboration, thereby strengthening Kenya's printing sector. This initiative has fostered a sense of unity among printers, reinforcing the

industry's ability to confront challenges and seize opportunities together. Kunal's efforts with CPAK exemplify his commitment to enhancing the industry and paving the way for future growth and collaboration. Fostering Innovation and Team Empowerment At DPI, Kunal's leadership is characterized by trust and empowerment. "I believe in delegating responsibilities and grooming my team to become better 36 | DECEMBER 2025

leaders," he says. His approach to leadership involves not just managing but also mentoring, with a focus on creating a team that will drive DPI's future success. Kunal's commitment to building a gender-balanced team, with aspirations to increase female representation to 50% by the end of the next year, reflects his belief in the value of diversity in driving business success. Balancing multiple roles—operations, sales, marketing, and product development—while steering DPI towards growth and innovation is no

small feat. Kunal attributes his ability to manage these responsibilities to a supportive team and a supportive family. "My wife's understanding and the talent within my core team have been crucial in managing these diverse roles," he says. His dedication to continuous learning, through networking and attending global events, keeps DPI at the cutting edge of industry trends. Innovation and Industry Partnerships The role of partnerships with industry giants like Hewlett-Packard, AB Graphics, and Karville cannot be overstated in DPI's success. "Maintaining strong relationships with our suppliers and investing in high-quality machinery has been key to staying ahead of the competition," Kunal asserts. These partnerships have enabled DPI to leverage advanced technologies and remain at the forefront of packaging innovation. Kunal's background in psychology also plays a significant role in his leadership approach. "Understanding human behavior has helped me connect with my team, persuade customers, and negotiate with suppliers," he explains. This unique perspective enhances his ability to lead effectively and build strong relationships within and outside the company. Kunal's Vision and Advice for Emerging Professionals For aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals in the packaging industry, Kunal Chandaria offers a beacon of guidance. "If you have a dream, follow it and don't give up. Even when faced with tough times, believe in yourself and your team.

Enjoy what you're doing, and success will follow," Kunal emphasizes. His advice underscores the importance of perseverance, self-belief, and passion in navigating the challenges of a dynamic industry. Kunal's encouragement to harness local talent and embrace the hurdles of entrepreneurship resonates deeply with those aiming to make a significant impact. Looking to the future, Kunal's vision for Digital Packaging Innovations Holdings Ltd. (DPI) reflects his commitment to progress and excellence. His strategic priorities include advancing gender diversity within the company, striving to become the most innovative packaging enterprise in the region, and enhancing global brand visibility through superior packaging solutions. "We aim to be a women-majority company and continue investing in the latest technologies to stay ahead of the curve," he asserts. Kunal is also dedicated to promoting sustainability and fostering innovation, positioning DPI at the forefront of these crucial trends. He envisions a flourishing future for East Africa's packaging industry, with DPI as a leading force in driving innovation and setting new standards. "East Africa's packaging industry has

great potential, and DPI is positioned to be a leader in innovation and quality," he confidently states. At this year's Drupa in Germany, DPI invested in a new machine with technology that will put us 5 to 10 years ahead of any competitor in Africa. Through his work, Kunal aims to demonstrate that packaging from East Africa can not only meet but exceed global standards, leaving a lasting mark on the international stage. Conclusion - A Legacy of Innovation and Excellence In conclusion, Kunal Chandaria's journey with Digital Packaging Innovations Holdings Ltd. illustrates a blend of tradition and innovation, driven by a commitment to excellence and a forward-thinking approach. His leadership, marked by trust, empowerment, and continuous learning, sets a high standard for the packaging industry. As DPI continues to break new ground and shape the future of packaging in East Africa, Kunal's vision and efforts promise to leave a lasting legacy in the industry. Through his pioneering work and dedication, he is not only transforming the packaging landscape but also inspiring a new generation of leaders in the field.

Natalie Foster Leading Innovation in the Legal Sector by Founding Advance Virtual Law Firm

C

o- Founder of Inspire Legal Group, Natalie Foster is a former business manager at Barclays Bank who transitioned into the legal industry to work in business development. The Group includes Inspire Legal Academy, which will give lawyers and other legal professionals the skills they need to benefit from the world of blockchain, smart contracts, and legal engineering, as well as Inspire Crypto, a company that will help develop products that enable property transactions to proceed via blockchain, are other ventures she has established. She says, It's our intention to inspire lawyers to see that there are many different things they can do in practise and to find new ways of delivering legal services. We are a group of colleagues where everyone has a stake in the success of the business." Inspire Legal Group The innovative virtual law firm from Inspire Legal Group, formerly Foster Clay, aims to give lawyers the tools they need to start their own practises and related businesses, such as technology solutions. Inspire Legal Group currently employs 23 lawyers as consultants who are building their practises with

complete back-office assistance. They aim to double the number of consultants by the end of 2022. They work with paralegals, licenced conveyancers, solicitors, and legal entrepreneurs who require a support network to develop their own tech products, and are enouraging other lawyers, at all levels to “join the movement” [one of the Group's taglines] . 11 people are currently employed by Inspire in Scarborough to help the lawyers. Early Background Natalie comes from a business, finance, and lending background. She started a law degree when she had her children, and she is still pursuing her SQE and LLM because being a solicitor would be sacrilege to her. She sees herself as a business leader who develops a team and garners support to bring about change. She works in the legal industry and is aware of the significant obstacles that must be removed before law and procedure can be applied to technology. Although the Law Commission is doing fantastic work in this area, a comprehensive solution is required. Inspire Legal Group and Vleppo (a Danish Blockchain Technology company) have forged a new alliance. She says, "We have the means to do what others are only

security and speed, are just a few of the difficulties Natalie mentions. Consultants who are in their own right entrepreneurial and have project ideas of their own can join the firm to have the support of reserved legal activity insurance when they require it. Under the firm's ABS (alternative business structure), they can offer niche services to their clients, retaining the majority of their fees. She asserts, "We've created personal brand workshops, lead gen support, and back office administration to support them. But what we're doing goes beyond being part of a “firm”, it's being part of a community. I don't want to be in competition with highstreet firms, we are not. I want to offer a different way of functioning in the sector by removing the issues many artists face when transferring property and support the legal sector in the journey to using block chain technology. This is what Inspire Legal Groupis doing. " Responsibilities at Inspire Legal Group

consulting on at this stage. Being asked by Vleppo to work with them over other larger firms has been an honour and I cannot wait to let the public know what it is we have planned." Leading Legal Group In the first lockdown, Inspire Legal Group was created. After hearing Boris on the TV say that the public were not permitted anywhere, Natalie sat in her bedroom with her laptop and felt a sudden wave of freedom

being taken away from her. She knew that many lawyers lawyers would find it difficult to function alone at home. She had resigned from her previous partnership position in order to start a business that would "survive the times then flourish." The objective was to establish a business that supported Web 3 and was entirely operationally digital. Regulatory compliance, lawyers' education in terms of understanding and buy-in, and the ultimate consumer client's need to be aware of the advantages of blockchain in the legal sector, such as 42 | DECEMBER 2025

As CEO, Natalie is responsible for the strategy, progress, and implementation of all projects within the group and ensures the relevant leaders have all the tools they need to undertake the roles the firm expects them to work with. Moreover, hers job is to build the brand of the group and ensure people know she is here to listen to new ideas and be non-conformist. She states, "Not anarchy, this is a different thing. People think that disruption is an uncomfortable place to be. It isn't if you have the education, support, and direction of leaders. That's what I do."

Sharing the Significance of Challenges Natalie quotes Hamilton, "Talk less, smile more." She finds that this saying, although simple, encapsulates the changes she has made to develop and bounce back after trusting in the wrong things and learning from failure. She asserts, "We all fail. We are all allowed one mess up. If we learn from it, it has not been a waste of time and energy." Natalie states that one should partner with people that share his or her values and ethics. She adds, "Distance, background, sector, and all kinds of things can be a little obstacle in this digital age, but a gap in ethics or integrity can mess with the balance of a team. When implementing change, there are constant dynamics and relationship changes. These need to be managed and respected, and if one party isn't working as hard as the rest, it causes upset in the ranks." She has learnt from this and selects her partners based on attitude and conduct over anything these days. She thanks the challenges she has faced for allowing her to realise her value to others at darker times, and suggests that you always have something to offer. In and Out of Work Natalie fits her work in “a little and often” around the needs of her two small children. Her hobbies are supporting her daughter in her dancing and she is often sat at the back of a hall or theatre emailing the HQ team. Natalie shares that Inspire Legal Group has great respect for family. It has to be this way. Her team misss nothing. She says, "If we support

employees' personal journeys as well as their professional ones, the loyalty you receive and buy-in is unparalleled. The perception by some is that this is a weakness, it isn't." Achieving all the Dreams Natalie admits that while she feels content with what she has accomplished so far, she is unsure of her plans for the next 40 years. She thinks, "We are all working through life in chapters. We do not need pigeonholing, and so what I do now might be different from what I do in 10 years, but whatever it is, I will always love being in business, providing opportunities for others to develop and building success from the ground up." She further adds, "Hard work doesn't have to be a painful slog. If you have an amazing team and good, smart processes, you can do anything. For me, the process has been everything. I'm lucky to have a strong board who does not allow me to veer off. Energy is not enough, you need strategy and reasoning." Why are you doing this? is something Natalie asks herself regularly. She finds dreams are subjective. She initially started simply wanting to be able to take a holiday, knowing the team and business were sustainable. She asserts, "Trust gets you there, and now I want to see that the projects we have are successful and we deliver the change the legal sector so desperately needs. Ask me again next year!" Key to Success Natalie has not experienced conventional or even convenient success. If anything, it has disrupted the market more than anything else because she entered the market with a critically constructive perspective.

CIO VIEWS | 43

She initially intended to go to law school, become licenced as a solicitor, and eventually join a partnership. This changed when she observed the extraordinary operational challenges that partners and lawyers in general face, which prevent them from working on future strategy but, more importantly, fire fight daily with outdated views of how people should handle requests and restrict their opportunities for access to justice. "Success to me now is to influence and construct positive change wherever possible using the gifts and control you have at your disposal," says Natalie. For her, this is a strong network of partners who support her vision for a web3 solution for the legal industry. That is client-focused, justice-focused, and complaintdriven, and it gives lawyers and the regulator confidence to proceed without fear. Future of Inspire Legal Group Natalie's goals for the future include expansion, senior leadership, and a focus on the areas where clients currently lack access to justice. Also included are litigation, business, and corporate, as well as crypto asset tracking. She says, "Anyone who isn't getting where they need to be in the corporate pyramid and knows they have a value, talk to us. We set lawyers up to practise in their own way with their own clients and educate them in tech so they remain relevant, supportive of their clients' needs, and multi-skilled in an everchanging landscape."

Howard Rosen An Experienced Change Management Leader Reforming The Healthcare Industry With Unique Perspectives On Patient Engagement

W

e've all heard the expression “born leader.” The phrase implies that the qualities that make a good leader are innate. Certain traits indeed tend to be innate—such as charisma, humility, and a sense of humour. Key leadership qualities to be successful can be learned and improved over time, such as effective communication, goal-setting, and strategic thinking. Every successful leader has a unique definition of success. Howard Rosen, CEO of Nova Insights states that fulfilling your mission, not just because of the naysayers but perhaps by being pushed by them, to create business good, societal good, and personal good. In the end, we all leave a legacy of one sort or another, good, bad or somewhere in between. “I think that if we are going to be here for 70 – 80 years, why not make the best of it and for others who follow,' he says. Challenges are an excellent opportunity for growth Challenges force you to tap into your creativity to come up with ways to overcome them. They make

you stronger. When obstacles stand in your way, you need to consider them as opportunities to find creative solutions to surmount them. Howard believes that the more an idea receives push-back, the more likely you are on to something. The hardest part is moving forward against that, learning to trust your instincts on where to push and where to listen. Nova Insights In Redefining The Healthcare Space Having built a health innovation company starting in the early days of the HealthIT evolution, Howard is using that experience, advising and consulting on innovation strategy, HealthIT, and engagement. A Schulich MBA with two decades as a film & television producer before HealthIT, Howard brought a unique perspective to patient engagement. Great healthcare systems should transform the way we think and feel about our well-being. Nova Insights is a new venture, being Howard's 3rd venture throughout his career (the first being a film & television producer and the second was as a healthIT inventor) all of which have laid the

groundwork for what he is doing now. He says it can be best described as Humanizing Digital Transformation. With his experience of what worked and didn't, implementing Health IT, though always part of the tech DNA, he has harked back to his first career incorporating that by helping companies to see the human side of technology, how to take into account the whole eco-system of customers both internal and external to the organization or health system. All as supported in a McKinsey report where they noted only 25% of digital transformation is considered a success and only 4% - 11% in health. Howard's Career Path And The Best Recognition He Received As A Leader Educated as an MBA, Howard started his career as a producer of film & television. At one point, when he had two productions simultaneously (one involving education on Diabetes and another doing promotions for mobile devices), in 2005, he learned that a disease like Type II Diabetes was preventable but all the available solutions pushed people away from its management. This got him thinking what was needed was a means that can be tied to people's lifestyles while engaging them. Thus when Howard started working on the promotion campaign for the cell phone, learning how in the future the phones can have programs such as tell us the weather (remember this was 2005), late one night it dawned on him that perhaps cell phones could be that lifestyle device that can be the means and the link between disease, health management and peoples daily life. Since then, it developed into a cloudbased solution called LifeWIRE, and Howard has since been awarded 6 patents and many honours. “The

wildest recognition, aside from the patents, was perhaps being chosen as a Rockefeller Foundation Top 100 Next Century Innovator,” he exclaims. Yet, Howard states that he has not yet achieved all that he has dreamed of.

Howard states that he tries to maintain a balance in his life by engaging in outside activities during the course of any given day such as playing the guitar, and walking his dog while also encouraging everyone else to find a way to break from the trance of work to allow the mind to rest and process His one message to aspiring leaders is that the more an idea receives pushback, be certain that the more likely you are on to something. The hardest part is moving forward against that, learning to trust your instincts on both where to push and where to listen.

Alejandra Guzman Focused to Improve the Quality of Lives

W

hat were your dreams and aspirations while growing up?

My journey began in Mexico where I grew up and started my career. From a very early age I witnessed the lack of economic opportunities our community had as well as the limited opportunities women had to advance in our careers. Within this context, I knew from an early age that I wanted to contribute to improving people´s quality of life. This is why I decided to pursue a professional career that focused on community and economic development. What were the initial challenges and setbacks that you faced when you first joined New Orleans Business Alliance? The nature of the roles I´ve had in most of my professional positions required mastering the balance of blending technical and relationship skills. Most of my positions have required an understanding of a complex web of internal and external relationships in which I have to act

simultaneously as a diplomat, influencer, team player, leader and listener. Economic development does not occur in a vacuum, so it is critical that I work well with others to accomplish my goals. In another instance I have had to lead a multi-sector group of senior consultants to design and execute an urban development proposal that required me to understand when to switch from a leader to a follower. The project required that I assemble a very specific set of skills and professionals including traffic and mobility engineering, architectural and landscape design, and sustainable real estate. Given the high-end nature of our real estate investments, we hired senior consultants, top in their field. Although I was ultimately responsible for leading our project, it was critical that I had the capability to step aside and follow the lead of technical experts to deliver a successful project. To master this career challenges I have invested in my professional development. It is important that as professionals we have a clear understanding of what are the skills that we need for our current professional challenges and our next career move. I have worked with an executive coach to help me

identify skill gaps and ways to address them. A coach can also help with preparations for salary negotiations and to address issues at work that have to do more with politics rather than technical skills.

How do you define the growth of the company over the past few years? (Can be explained with statistical data too)

Tell us in brief about the services of New Orleans Business Alliance The New Orleans Business Alliance is a public-private partnership and the official economic development organization for the city of New Orleans. The organization was formed in 2010 through a coalition of business and civic leaders to employ the best practices in economic development to position New Orleans as the ideal intersection of commerce and culture. As the official economic development partnership for New Orleans and the hub of its business community, our goal is to continue to show the world that New Orleans is the best American city for business investment, quality of life and inclusive economic opportunity. We focus our work on small business growth, business expansion and retention, talent & workforce development, as well as strategic neighborhood development. Our business model includes pursuing an inclusive economic development strategy, in which we create the perfect intersection of culture and commerce while delivering New Orleanians enhanced economic security. How has technology impacted economic development? There is a lot of discussion in our field on how technology is changing the nature of our current jobs and what that means for the future of work and designing curricula to meet those demands. In New Orleans, the

different organizations that are involved in this topic, including NOLABA, are in constant communication and coordination to help address this challenge. What is less discussed when it comes to technology is how this is positively contributing to other areas of economic development. For example, at the Business Alliance, we use data and technology to support our work around business attraction and retention. In the case of real estate development, we partner with internationally recognized data analytic companies to build the case of why investment opportunities have a high probability of being successful in our market. We also offer relevant data to our broader business community through our website Nolaba.org.

52 | DECEMBER 2025

In the last two years our organization has reimagined what economic development means for our community. We developed and implemented a strategy that prioritizes inclusive economic development. This means looking at our work with a lens of equity and making sure that everyone in our community receives support and not just certain members of our community. We have expanded our portfolio to make sure we have a holistic offer that includes support for our workforce, small businesses, and business retention and attraction. We have also gained industry peer validation by becoming one of 62 International Economic Development Council accredited economic development organizations worldwide. We are committed to the best practices in economic development. Give us a brief of your life before New Orleans Business Alliance Before joining the New Orleans Business Alliance in 2016, I spearheaded projects budgeted at or below $3 million which benefit more than 52,000 people in Latin America. I also held a position at Capital Natural, a leading management and administration firm for private equity funds and real estate investment projects operating in Mexico. I promoted urban and community development for real estate projects valued in excess of $200 million and lead risk management for assets in excess of $400 million.

This included integrating and implementing urban, community, and political strategies into a core business model for the company. I managed a multi-sector team of staff and consultants to promote a public private partnership focusing on urban regeneration and mobility within the city of Monterrey, Mexico. In 2016 I began targeting her efforts to the +350,000 members of the Greater New Orleans Community whom I serve daily through the New Orleans Business Alliance as Vice President, Real Estate. I'm trilled to be able to contribute to the economic development of New Orleans. Economic development promotes well-being, quality of life and the opportunities to develop human potential. Economic Development matters because people matter. Creating the right conditions for this is a complex task that requires the participation of various sectors within our community, a holistic and deliberate approach that should be centered on people. I come to my job every day with the motivation that I am contributing to the wellbeing of my own family and thousands of people in our city. Tell us about your roles and responsibilities as the Vice President, Performance Management and Strategy of New Orleans Business Alliance and how does it make you feel? Being able to serve as Vice President at the New Orleans Business Alliance has been important milestone for me because it gives me the opportunity to promote the wellbeing, quality of life of thousands of people in our region. I have the opportunity to lend my voice to promote a holistic approach

to economic development by recognizing that there are participants that work together in a system and that interact with each other. These include businesses and other sources of employment, workforce, and infrastructure. Each has interdependence to the rest, and they are all a requirement for development. Through this role I'm able to connect with leaders of all sectors of society and push for us to make ourselves important questions and take action towards a better future. How do you manage to balance your personal and professional life? I believe is important to be organized by setting priorities and goals. This has helped me eliminate distractions. I also make sure to take care of my health and relationships. This is important because if there is an area of my life that is not in balance, the rest will hurt. Describe yourself in one word and tell us what inspires you? Focused. I´m fortunate to live and work in a community that is culturally rich and is one of the most unique cities in America. This coupled with the potential that I see in New Orleans, inspires me to work hard every day to bring more economic opportunities so we can all thrive and be successful. What keeps you and your colleagues motivated? Economic development promotes well-being, quality of life and the opportunities to develop human potential. Economic Development matters because people matter. Creating the right conditions for this

CIO VIEWS | 53

is a complex task that requires the participation of various sectors within our community, a holistic and deliberate approach that should be centered on people. A holistic approach to economic development recognizes that there are participants that work together in a system and that interact with each other. These include businesses and other sources of employment, workforce, and infrastructure. Each has interdependence to the rest, and they are all a requirement for development. This development will matter only to the extent that it touches and changes all citizens´ lives. Cities that win in attracting financial and human capital will expand access to economic opportunity. However, it is also important to consider that development requires intentional action across multiple generations to allow change to happen in all neighborhoods. Everyone should have an opportunity to thrive and to be successful. In order to create opportunity for all, leadership in all sectors of society has to make themselves important questions: How can cities yield more positive outcomes for all urban residents, small business owners, and long-term stakeholders? What can we do to catalyze and accelerate more growth in the lower income and/or higher crime neighborhoods? How do we ensure that all members of our communities are involved in these discussions, so we can create move inclusive economic opportunities? Although New Orleans is no stranger to the spirit of continual re-invention that animates American cities, we have to continue to make ourselves the hard questions to remain on a trajectory of equity and growth.

development and that he would have to put in a lot of effort to adjust to the high standards of the legal profession around the world. He acquired the skills of organization, rigor, and initiative while working for a law office of one of the BIG4 companies. He recalls, "Continuing my career with international law firms, including one of the Magic Circle law firms, I had access to cutting-edge know-how and integrated the highest standards of legal services on the market.”

succeeded. The firm went through an almost full reshape to become one of Romania's most comprehensive providers of legal services with high standards."

Before joining KPMG Legal, Vlad was a counsel at a Magic Circle law firm with a presence in Romania, where he worked for more than 11 years. Before that, he worked for another international law firm and for the associated law firm of another BIG4 firm in Romania.

In KPMG Legal, Vlad is the head of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice, and is also in charge of overseeing other practices, such as: infrastructure and public procurement, CRSI, energy and natural resources. He states, "My team is the best recognition I haveany contribution I can bring to their development, their successes, each challenge we overcome, these are a reflection of my work as a leader and are most fulfilling to observe. It is amazingly rewarding to see my former trainees and students grow to their potential, and this is an important part of my work."

Vlad comments, "I am still dreaming and therefore, I am continuously setting new targets. So far, I can say that I have reached all the relevant milestones I have set for my professional career."

Currently, KPMG Legal provides a broad variety of legal services and, in cooperation with other KPMG network experts, we provide integrated services with a 360-degree perspective on any problem.

Leading KPMG to New Heights

In terms of numbers, the outcomes of the team's work over the previous three years are reflected in a significant yearly growth in revenue. We now have 28 lawyers with expertise in all areas of law who have graduated from the top universities in Romania, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and South Africa, and have international experience gained at reputable international law firms like those in the Magic Circle.

Vlad joined KPMG Legal as a partner in February 2019 with the specific goal of expanding the L&DR practise and working together with Laura Toncescu, head of KPMG Legal, to restructure the legal services team. Since Vlad joined the company, KPMG Legal has developed its team and is the obvious choice for its clients. The firm offers legal services to the highest international standards available on the market while maintaining reasonable fees. Vlad adds, "I am referring to an entire team effort. clients in complex litigation and arbitration proceedings. Insights into Success "Success is not easy to define, as it is not easy to achieve," says Vlad. Success for him means having a place where one can use and develop one's strongest skills and make a valuable contribution with an impact on oneself and on others, as well as achieving a good balance between work and personal life. However, in Vlad's opinion, being successful is not a fixed point that you reach in time. It's more of a continuous journey. He believes, "The journey and the people who walk alongside you define the success." Vlad considers that his definition of success has changed over the years and he is sure that it is still developing. He recalls, "Right after graduating law school, I realised that, besides having a fulfilling professional life, it was equally important to me to give back by investing my time in forming new generations of legal professionals. My academic activities became a piece of what success meant for me and greatly contributed to the development of this concept." He further adds, "Now, people around me have become more and more important, a significant part of the journey to success. I cannot consider myself professionally successful if my team is not feeling the same. I measure my success by looking at the success of my people and how my former students, now colleagues, grow into amazing legal professionals." Vlad considers that the essential elements in his situation were constant studying (which also

involved finishing his coursework with an LL.M. and Ph.D.), touring the world, and savouring all interactions with individuals from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. An international setting gave him the ability to widen his perspectives and taught him to always be open to new chances and come up with creative solutions. Another important part of Vlad's definition of success comes from his family. He tells us, "I am a proud father of a 4-year-old kid and my success now is reflected through his eyes. Being a father has given me valuable lessons on core values in life and reminded me of the joy of discovering the world." Vlad is sure this definition of success will continue to develop, as he discovers new ways in which he can have a positive impact on the community and his team. Every Failure is a Sign of a New Beginning In the 21 years of Vlad's legal career, while being a lawyer, a law school teaching assistant, and an arbitrator, he lost track of his list of failures. He states, "I have not kept a score of fails, but I have kept track of the learning which they generated and will integrate these lessons into future plans." One of the lessons Vlad learned during his career journey is that changes and challenges can come with incredible new perspectives that one may have missed. Vlad initially believed that he would only practise as a transactional attorney for the rest of his life, without representing clients in court.

But just as he was about to make a change in his professional life, he and his team at one of the largest international law firms were given their first litigation case. He then considered that case, the experience his team had had, and the kind of change and challenge he was unexpectedly facing. He tells us that it opened his eyes and his mind to a whole new dimension of his work, so much so that he switched his main practise to litigation. The unexpected change turned out to be far more complex and interesting than many transactions and a switch towards a new professional calling.

Vlad has learned over his career that a lack of openness results in individuals feeling excluded and working without a clear goal, which over time results in a drop in motivation. As a result, “at KPMG Legal, we are able to clearly communicate a team's vision and provide the necessary assistance for them to accomplish their objectives” says Vlad.

Vlad is now working in cross-practice teams and using his background as a transactional lawyer to bring a new approach in court.

•

To remain the Clear Choice for their clients.

•

To become the number one law firm affiliated with a Big4 in Romania.

•

To be one of the main engines of growth for KPMG.

Views on Personal Goals and Professional Goals Vlad's plans for KPMG Legal – Toncescu si Asociatii can be defined as follows:

Keeping Curiosity Alive Vlad is continuously curious and he is continuously learning, which keeps him motivated in all he does. Moreover, having a great team around him motivates him even more, as they are all extremely passionate about what they do and they generate amazing creative energy together. He states, "One of the main advantages in KPMG Legal, that makes a difference and motivates our people, is being open and transparent with what we do and making people feel included." According to Vlad, being honest is a crucial quality for a strong leader. Being honest helps individuals understand what they are working for, how they contribute to the company, and most importantly, how they will be compensated for their job.

On a personal level, he hopes to live a more flexible and open-ended life, spend quality time with his family, and raise his child well. The advice Vlad gives to aspiring attorneys is to never stop learning, to be open-minded and seize any opportunity that comes your way, to be diligent and proactive in your job, and to never give up on your dreams.
