PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES ON JULY 18, 1968, THE PLAYHOUSE opened its first show in the Robert S. Marx Theatre. It was a production of Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real — a fantastical tale where reality takes a backseat to the imagination. Looking back, it’s rather poignant it was chosen to introduce audiences to the new stage. It captures the wonder of going to the theatre, putting everything else on pause, and entering the world of a story. For five decades, the Marx Theatre has done exactly that. The stage has been transformed into Victorian-era London in A Christmas Carol, the ancient setting of Illyria in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the captivating pages of The Secret Garden, the dreamy world over the rainbow in The Wizard of Oz and the musically inspiring New York neighborhood of In the Heights. The Marx has been the place where you’ve experienced theatre’s greatest storytellers like Eugene O’Neill, Agatha Christie, August Wilson, Sarah Ruhl, and Stephen Sondheim as well as homegrown artists such as Theresa Rebeck and Keith Josef Adkins. Most importantly, the Marx has been the place where you, our beloved audiences, have made memories for a lifetime. This is my tenth season, and it’s been a privilege to direct and produce in this space. I want to acknowledge my predecessors who have made so many memories for you in the early years of the Playhouse: David Marlin Jones (1960), Michael Alfreds (1961-1962), Brooks Jones (1963-1970), Word Baker (1971-1972), Hal Scott (1973-1974), Michael Murray (1975-1984), Robert Kalfin (1984-1985), Worth Gardner (1985-1991) and Ed Stern (1992-2012). Now, it’s time to say goodbye to this historic space and take an exciting step into the future with Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre. With the opening of our state-of-the-art theatre complex, we’re not replacing our cherished experiences in the Marx — we’re building upon them for future generations, making the experience of going to the theatre even more wondrous. SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY CANDIS C. JONES her home in Ghana, but we are witnessing this play in America. Therein lies the intersecting conversation of colorism. We see Paulina desiring a more American or European look… straight hair and lighter skin. She believes it is her ticket to compete and market herself. In our first week together the actors and I revisited Alice Walker’s essay “If the Present Looks Like the Past, What Does the Future Look Like?” in which she defines colorism and how it divides the Black community. Alice Walker wrote this essay in 1982 and it still anchors us in discourse and healing. I posed the essay title question to the cast to imagine possible futures or at the very least to create a balm of connection for the present. It is not every day that Black Women commune to craft a play by a Black woman. That calls for celebration, confetti, and applause. These rare and special moments are the joy of my career. Along with that, it is an honor to be in the fold of one of the most comedic, heart wrenching, widely produced plays of my generation. I am writing this note at the very beginning of our process, to share some intimate reflections on the themes of School Girls from our rehearsal room. When I saw this play in 2017, I was hemmed up in laughter in one moment and burst into tears in the next. I couldn’t pinpoint why exactly, but I felt the camaraderie, sisterhood, confusion, innocence, disappointment and pain that these girls were experiencing. Anyone who has grown up in the public or private school system can relate. That experience is even more layered for a dark skinned little Black girl anywhere from Ghana to our own backyard. I love that our playwright, Jocelyn Bioh, places us in

Starnubia pinpointed the daunting truth that racism may never end thus this conversation always feels timely and present. Others highlighted the ways in which the beauty industry and the media have historically bamboozled Black women. Jasmine Cheri Rush shared, “my hope is that the women who are always on the brunt end (we dark skinned women) — at least we can get the acknowledgement of it without the immediate dismissal…if colorism is all about the male gaze, if not by men, at least we can get the acknowledgement of our experience from women.” In looking at the present and toward the future, I can say that perhaps since Alice Walker wrote the aforementioned essay in 1982, our conversation has expanded. Jocelyn Bioh nods to more possibilities for the future when the girls serenade us with the unforgettable mantra in “The Greatest Love of All.” We can seed the next generation and only hope for unity.

Jasmine is elated to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. She is a 2021 graduate of the BFA Acting program at The Theatre School at DePaul University, where she starred in the Chicago premiere of Our Lady of Kibeho. Freshly out of the university, she is excited to hit the professional stage again, with her most recent credit being the role of Cordelia in King Lear (Shakespeare & Company). She is a writer, mover, deviser and newly a film director. Jasmine dedicates this performance to her inner child and little brown girls who are finding their footing. MATENIN SANGARE (AMA) Matenin is super excited to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. She graduated with her BFA in Acting from Brooklyn College, with some of her work including Lear by Young Jean Lee, the world premiere of La Folie at The Black Lady Theatre and Neighborhood 3: Requisition Of Doom. Her most recent credits include Corellion (a feature-length audio drama), Unearthly Visitants (a collaboration piece with director Kevin Ray, who she previously worked with on Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom), Eclipsed at Milwaukee Repertory Theater and The Red Queen (an indie Sci-Fi film which will be making its festival run). Her plays include School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play (Kilroy’s List, 2016; CTG; MCC Theater; Lortel Award Winner; OCC John Gardner Award Winner; Hull-Warriner Award Winner; Drama Desk Nomination; Drama League Nomination; Off-Broadway Alliance nomination), Nollywood Dreams (Cherry Lane Mentor Project, 2017; Kilroy’s List, 2015), and African Americans (Produced at Howard University, 2015; Southern Rep Ruby Prize Award Finalist, 2011; O’Neill Center Semifinalist, 2012). Jocelyn conceived and wrote the libretto for The Ladykiller’s Love Story (music and lyrics by CeeLo Green) and Goddess (book writer). She has also been a staff writer for the Netflix TV shows Russian Doll and Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It. Jocelyn received her MFA in Theatre/Playwriting from Columbia University. She is under commission with Manhattan Theatre Club, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Second Stage, and Atlantic Theater Company, and is a resident playwright at LCT3. Milagros is an Associate Professor of Set Design and head of the BFA Program in Theatre Design & Technology at Penn State. She holds MFA degrees in both Studio Arts and Scenic Design from University of Maryland and a BFA degree in Drawing and Painting from Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Milagros has received five Helen Hayes Nominations for Outstanding Scenic Design in the Washington, D.C. area. She is a member of United Scenic Artists Local-829 and Associate Artist at Ford’s Theatre.

KRISTIE CHIYERE OSI (COSTUME DESIGNER) Kristie is a Nigerian-American Costume Designer based out of Houston with a Master’s of Fine Art in Costume Technology. She began her career as a stitcher in the costume shop at Houston Grand Opera in 2016 and is currently serving as Costume Coordinator. Kristie’s first professional costume design was Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom in May 2018 and was awarded “Costume Design of the Decade” from the Broadway World Regional Awards in January 2020. Her credits include but are not limited to Carmen (Opera Orlando); Marian’s Song (Houston Grand Opera); Verdi’s Il Trovatore and Tchaikovsky’s Onegin (Opera in the Heights); The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Stages); Too Heavy for Your Pocket, Da Kink in My Hair and I, Too, Am America (The Ensemble Theatre); Picasso at Lapin Agile (Rice University); as well as Tilly the Trickster, Bunnicula and A View From The Bridge (Lone Star College-Houston North). Kristie’s passion for innovation and creativity has taken her as far as Madrid to present costume technology research to costume designers from around the world. DAISY LONG (LIGHTING DESIGNER) Daisy is thrilled to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. She is a Lighting Designer for theatre, opera, music and dance. Her credits include Keen Company, Abingdon Theatre Company, Alliance Theatre, Everyman Theatre, Wexford Festival Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Shed, Speakeasy Stage Company (receiving the Independent Reviewers of New England Award for The Scottsboro Boys) and TADA! Not only does her work revolve around the live experimentation process, but it also includes centering sound as a medium to represent the non-tactile concepts of time, emotion, identity and physics. During her live performances, she uses midi controllers, loopers and effects processors, with accompanying visual vignettes composed of found footage and abstract personal video. As an original member of the alternative hip-hop group The Goats and the experimental electronic group Saturn Never Sleeps, Rucyl has performed internationally at museums and festivals. SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY and sound design for Kaneza Schaal’s Jack &, as well as sound design for the off-Broadway play Anatomy of a Suicide. She has built a wearable audiovisual midi controller, The Chakakhantroller (2008), for solo performance of electronic music. Her last installation was Sound Prism (2016), a solar-powered sonic system that plays the frequencies of the color spectrum, which is currently installed at Organizmo Design Center in Bogota, Colombia. HOLMES (ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER) Brandon is excited to be back with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, having worked as a stage management intern during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. Playhouse credits this season include the world premiere of The West End, A Christmas Carol and Steel Magnolias. For eight seasons, he was the Production Stage Manager for Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati where he managed over 40 productions. Highlights with ETC include Fun Home, The Mountaintop, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, An Iliad, Grounded, Violet, Pipeline, The Humans, Skeleton Crew and Hands on a Hardbody. Hearing Enhancement In the Marx Theatre, hearing enhancement receivers providing volume enhancement to patrons with hearing impairment can be obtained prior to every performance from a house manager. The Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre has a new hearing loop system which works with existing T-Coil or Telecoil enabled hearing aids or cochlear implants. PARKING The Park Board reminds you that Eden Park officially closes at 10 p.m. As a grace period to the Playhouse, the police will not ticket vehicles until one half hour following the end of a performance. The Playhouse assumes no responsibility for anyone receiving a ticket for

illegal parking. Convenient parking is available in the Playhouse garage. Purchase parking in advance to secure a space. Parking can also be purchased from our parking attendant immediately before the performance if available. Accessible parking for those with disabilities is located in front of the main entrance, as well as in the Playhouse parking garage. Parking for persons with disabilities is limited and must be reserved and paid for in advance. All vehicles using these spaces must display a valid disability placard. PROHIBITION OF WEAPONS The Ohio Revised Code (R.C. 2923.126) has established the privilege of carrying a concealed handgun to Ohio citizens who have obtained the proper license. The same law explicitly grants private employers in the state the right to prohibit their employees and visitors from possessing firearms on the employer’s premises. With this notification the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park is informing you that it prohibits weapons of any kind on its premises, and reserves the right to search persons, parcels and vehicles on the same. BECOMING DR. RUTH ANNE O’SULLIVAN (DR. RUTH K. WESTHEIMER) Anne is delighted to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. Since first understudying Becoming Dr. Ruth, off-Broadway in 2015, Anne has been performing the role in theatres around the country; last staged in 2019 by Stephen Nachamie at the New Repertory Theatre in Watertown, Mass. She celebrates over 45 years as a working actor in more than 100 productions including Broadway’s Blithe Spirit. Her off-Broadway credits include Marisol (The Public Theater), Mere Mortals (Primary Stages), Juno (Vineyard Theatre), The Plough and the Stars (Irish Repertory Theatre) and Mary MacGregor at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, where she is a member. GERMAIN (PLAYWRIGHT) Mark St. Germain’s play Freud’s Last Session ran for two years Off-Broadway, closing July 24th, 2012. The play has been open in Argentina since January 2012 and in repertory in Sweden, Australia, Denmark. His play Becoming Dr. Ruth premiered in July 2012 at the Barrington Stage Company in the Berkshires, played at Hartford Theaterworks, and was brought to NYC to the Westside Theatre. Scott and Hem in the Garden of Allah co-premiered in the summer of 2013 at the Contemporary American Theater Festival and Barrington Stage Company. His play The Best of Enemies, first produced by the Barrington Stage Company, is now being produced throughout the country. The Fabulous Lipitones, a musical comedy co-written with John Markus, premiered at the Theatrical Outfit in Atlanta in summer, 2013, and then at Goodspeed Playhouse. Mark’s other plays include Camping with Henry and Tom (Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Awards), Ears on a Beatle, the God Committee, Out of Gas on Lover’s Leap, and Dancing Lessons (premiered at the Barrington Stage Festival). Mark wrote the Tammy Wynette Musical Stand By Your Man, which began at the Ryman Theater in Nashville. With composer Charles Strouse he co-wrote the book for his adaption of Dreiser’s American Tragedy. With composer Randy Courts Mark has written the perennial musical The Gifts of the Magi as well as Johnny Pye and the Foolkiller (AT&T Award Grant) and Jack’s Holiday (Playwrights Horizons). Television work includes Writer/Creative Consultant for “The Cosby Show” and Dick Wolf’s “Crime and Punishment.” He co-wrote director Carroll Ballard’s film “Duma” and produced and directed the documentary “My Dog, An Unconditional Love Story,” with Richard Gere, Glenn Close, Edward Albee and others. Mark also wrote the award winning children’s book “Three Cups.” Mark is an Associate Artist of the Barrington Stage Company, a recipient of the William Inge Festival’s New Voices Award, and a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Writer’s Guild East. He is an alumnus of New Dramatists.

BRIAN PRATHER (SET DESIGNER) Brian is excited to be making his debut at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. His off-Broadway work includes Daniel’s Husband at Primary Stages, Mrs. Warren’s Profession at the Gingold Theatrical Group, Becoming Dr. Ruth at the Westside Theatre and Freud’s Last Session at New World Stages. Brian has designed internationally for the Chungmu Art Hall in South Korea and regionally for Asolo Repertory Theatre, the Alley Theatre, Goodspeed Musicals, the Barrington Stage Company, Theaterworks Hartford, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and many more, including the national tour of A Night With Janis Joplin. Brian is a regional Emmy Award nominee for the design of The Kate concert series on Public Television, a Joseph Jefferson Award winner for Set Design in Chicago and the winner of multiple Berkshire Theatre Critics Association awards. AMBER WHATLEY (LIGHTING DESIGNER) Amber is a lighting designer for live performance. Her skills include lighting for theatre, dance and concert, and lighting for the camera. Her technical strengths are programing and moving light programing. She was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. She then completed her B.F.A. at Savannah College of Art and Design. RUTH churches in the Southeast U.S. Her MFA graduate studies in Lighting Design at The University of Texas at Austin led her to the creation of Blackout, a workshop and video series in which her objective is to bring lighting design and technology awareness to Black youth and under-supported communities. Her research interests include creating accessible lighting knowledge for BIPOC youth and under-supported communities, new works and non-traditional theater design. As a recent graduate and post MFA fellow at The Ohio State University, Amber enjoys teaching, freelance designing and furthering the development of Blackout.

FABIAN OBISPO (SOUND DESIGNER) Fabian returns to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, where his credits include Speaking in Tongues, Love Song, An Infinite Ache, Havana Is Waiting and Ah, Wilderness! His recent off-Broadway credits include Public Theater’s Out of Time (The National Asian American Theatre Company), The Chinese Lady (MaYi Theater Company), Sea Wall/A Life, Oedipus El Rey and Teenage Dick. His musical Felix Starro premiered off-Broadway last fall.
