PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS, WE’VE BEEN working hard to bring your Playhouse into a new era of theatre. How do we build performance spaces that inspire the industry’s most talented artists? That enable us to wow our audiences? How can we support the incredible artistry of our local peers? The 2022-23 season marks the culmination of years-long planning and development. We’re elated (and eager!) to open the all-new Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre in March 2023. This once-in-a-generation project comes to an incredible finish because of the generosity of the entire Playhouse community. The facility allows us to reach new heights with enhanced technology and to serve our patrons with expanded accessibility and comfort. As a space for artistic creation, we’ll open our doors to local artists and organizations to cultivate relationships and explore new, impactful ideas. Simply put, it represents the future of American theatre — right here in Cincinnati. Until that exciting moment, the Playhouse will bring the first three shows of the 2022-23 season into the community! We’re performing Agatha Christie’s long-awaited, masterpiece mystery Murder on the Orient Express, as told by Ken Ludwig, at the Aronoff Center’s Jarson-Kaplan Theater. The iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo comes to life in Frida…A Self Portrait, written and performed by Vanessa Severo, at The Carnegie Theatre in Covington, Kentucky. And in an exclusive engagement of a new production, The Lion, by Benjamin Scheuer, tells an intimate musical tale at the Warsaw Federal Incline Theater in Price Hill. We’ll celebrate the grand opening of the Rouse Theatre with a new production of the Broadway sensation, A Chorus Line, and set the stage for another groundbreaking chapter of the American Century Cycle in August Wilson’s Seven Guitars. Then, we’re giving new life to one of the greatest Westerns of all time, Shane, a world premiere written by the acclaimed Karen Zacarías and co-commissioned with the renowned Guthrie Theater. Likewise, the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre season continues its legacy of exciting new works. Lloyd Suh’s The Chinese Lady paints a darkly poetic yet whimsical portrait of the first Chinese woman to step foot on U.S. soil. And the world premiere of Nathan Alan Davis’ Origin Story weaves an endearing comedy about life’s biggest questions and the surprising ways we find the answers. What a remarkable moment this is for the Playhouse! It’s a privilege to share it with you, and we can’t wait to step into this new era of theatre. Together.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS DIRECTOR’S NOTES BY LAURA GORDON Robert Harling wrote Steel Magnolias as a tribute to the courage of his sister, mother and their support system of neighborhood women in Nachitoches, Louisiana, in 1987. The gathering place is the familiar environs of Truvy’s beauty shop and is the perfect setting for a play that celebrates female friendships in all their complicated, quirky glory. The ﬁlm version of the play came out in 1989 and immediately captured the hearts of millions of moviegoers around the world. So here we are 35 years later with a story that continues to resonate with people, I believe, because it’s grounded in truth. There’s a wonderful anecdote about the original production in New York; the cast was supposedly shocked by the laughter they received in front of their ﬁrst audience. They had never thought of the play as a comedy but had rather invested in the reality of the story and the richness of the relationships. The characters are very real and they just so happen to be incredibly funny.

As I return to the theatre, I want to see stories of resilience with characters who see each other through the dark times and celebrate the good, who speak with candor, generosity and great humor. I want to feel lifted up. I need to be moved, and

I really need to laugh. I feel certain that these ladies will provide you with all of that. If this story is new to you, you’re in for a real treat. For the rest of us, I hope it feels a bit like visiting old friends that you haven’t seen in a while and experiencing some good old Southern hospitality.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS KATE ABBRUZZESE (SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE) Kate is delighted to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. In New York, she has workshopped plays such as The Good Ones, As You Like It and Richard II at the acclaimed Public Theater and Unicorn, Tiny Houses, Catch as Catch Can and Love at the New Dramatists Theatre Company. She has performed Off-Broadway with the Gingold Theatrical Group, The Tank Theater, The 52nd Street Project and opposite Christopher Lloyd in Pound. Regionally, she has played leading roles at The Old Globe Theatre Company, the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Chautauqua Theater Company, Baltimore Center Stage, Shakespeare & Company and more. Kate’s television credits include NCIS: New Orleans and The Blacklist. Her film credits include The Chaperone and Siren. Kate is a two-time winner of the Red Bull Short New Play Festival for her plays Motley Fool and An Evening With the Macbeths, the latter of which she expanded into full-length during her 2021 residency at the Bethany Arts Community. GINA DANIELS (CLAIREE BELCHER) Gina is delighted to make her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. Her Broadway credits include Network and All the Way. She has performed in Judgment Day (Park Avenue Armory), The White Snake (Wuzhen Theatre Festival) and Angels in America: Parts One and Two (Repertory Theatre of St. Louis) as The Angel. She was a founding member of The New Group Theater Company in New York City and toured both nationally and internationally with Murder a La Carte. STEEL MAGNOLIAS NAOMI JACOBSON (OUISER BOUDREAUX) Naomi is delighted to return to Cincinnati Playhouse, where she played Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare In Love (2017) and Mrs. Meany in A Prayer for Owen Meany (2016). She is a Shakespeare Theatre Company Affiliated Artist and a Woolly Mammoth company member in Washington, DC. Theatre credits include Kennedy Center, Ford’s Theatre, Arena Stage, Guthrie Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Signature & Studio Theatres, Center Stage, Theatre J, Olney Theatre, Milwaukee Rep, Arizona Theatre Company, Delaware Theatre Company, the Berkshire Theatre Festival, and Wolf Trap Opera. Naomi’s received three Helen Hayes Awards, 12 nominations, the Inaugural Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship, the Anderson-Hopkins Award for Excellence in Theatre, and a DC Arts Commission Individual Artist grant. Television credits include a few guest spots for Homicide (NBC), and indie films and shorts for American Film Institute and A&E. Voiceover work includes NPR, PBS, Discovery Channel, the Smithsonian, and she narrates recorded books. Naomi holds an International Federation of Coaches certification (Active Communication) and coaches professionals in acting, public speaking and presentations at theatres, universities, government agencies, corporations and privately. STEEL MAGNOLIAS ROBERT HARLING (PLAYWRIGHT) Robert Harling made his directorial debut with The Evening Star for Paramount, which he also wrote for the screen based on Larry McMurty’s novel. The Evening Star reunited Shirley MacLaine and Jack Nicholson and co-stars Juliette Lewis, Bill Paxton, Scott Wolf, Miranda Richardson, and Marion Ross. The Evening Star is the continuation of one of the most beloved and acclaimed movies of our time, Terms of Endearment. Before launching a successful stage and screenwriting career, Robert graduated from Tulane University School of Law, but instead of taking the bar exam, he opted to become an actor in New York. After years of productive work as an actor in voiceovers and commercials, Harling was inspired to write the highly acclaimed stage play Steel Magnolias, which was based on events from his personal life. Steel Magnolias continues to thrive in theatrical productions throughout the world. Immediately bridging a career from stage to screen, Harling adapted his original play into the popular ﬁlm of the same title, which starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, and Daryl Hannah. Over the years, Mr. Harling has become a much sought-after screenwriter: other credits, to name a few, include Soapdish, which was based on Harling’s acting experience and starred Sally Field, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert Downey Jr., and First Wives Club for Paramount, starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton.

LAURA GORDON (DIRECTOR) A Milwaukee-based actor and director, Laura is so pleased to return to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park to direct Steel Magnolias. She last worked here as an actor playing the Nurse in Shakespeare in Love (2017) and Harriet Wheelwright in A Prayer for Owen Meany (2016). Other directing credits include productions at American Players Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Santa Cruz Shakespeare, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Forward Theater and Actors Theatre of Louisville. A longtime member of the Milwaukee Repertory’s resident acting company, her credits there include Margie in Good People, Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman and Sister Aloysius in Doubt. A member of the Stage Director and Choreographers Association and the Actors’ Equity Association, Laura received her MFA in acting from the University of Iowa and is a Lunt-Fontanne Theatre Fellow. REGINA GARCÍA (SET DESIGNER) Regina is a Chicago-based scenic designer from Puerto Rico, and she is thrilled to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. She has had long-standing relationships with the Latinx Theatre’s renowned Teatros including Repertorio Español, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, Teatro Vista and Pregones Theater. She has also completed projects for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, American Players Theatre, Goodman Theatre and many more. She has upcoming shows at the Chicago Children’s Theatre, the Guthrie Theater and the Yale Repertory Theatre. Brandon is excited to be back with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, having worked as a stage management intern during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. Playhouse credits this season include the world premiere of The West End and A Christmas Carol. For eight seasons, he was the Production Stage Manager for Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati where he managed over 40 productions. Highlights with ETC include Fun Home, The Mountaintop, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, An Iliad, Grounded, Violet, Pipeline, The Humans, Skeleton Crew and Hands on a Hardbody. During the summers, he works with The Lexington Theatre Company where he has stage managed productions of A Chorus Line, The Music Man, Legally Blonde, West Side Story and Newsies. He has stage managed other regional productions including Hello, Dolly!, The Drowsy Chaperone and Side By Side by Sondheim (LOOK Musical Theatre); Red, White & Broadway, Golden: MTWichita at 50 (Music Theatre Wichita); and workshops with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company and Cleveland Play House. Hearing Enhancement In the Marx Theatre, hearing enhancement receivers providing volume enhancement to patrons with hearing impairment can be obtained prior to every performance from a house manager. The Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre has a new hearing loop system which works with existing T-Coil or Telecoil enabled hearing aids or cochlear implants. Large Print Program Large print programs for those with visual impairments are available upon request at every performance. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, re-admittance and seating will be at the discretion of the house manager so as not to disturb the audience and actors. PARKING The Park Board reminds you that Eden Park officially closes at 10 p.m. As a grace period to the Playhouse, the police will not ticket vehicles until one half hour following the end of a performance. The Playhouse assumes no responsibility for anyone receiving a ticket for

illegal parking. Convenient parking is available in the Playhouse garage. Purchase parking in advance to secure a space. Parking can also be purchased from our parking attendant immediately before the performance if available. Accessible parking for those with disabilities is located in front of the main entrance, as well as in the Playhouse parking garage. Parking for persons with disabilities is limited and must be reserved and paid for in advance. All vehicles using these spaces must display a valid disability placard. PROHIBITION OF WEAPONS The Ohio Revised Code (R.C. 2923.126) has established the privilege of carrying a concealed handgun to Ohio citizens who have obtained the proper license. The same law explicitly grants private employers in the state the right to prohibit their employees and visitors from possessing firearms on the employer’s premises. With this notification the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park is informing you that it prohibits weapons of any kind on its premises, and reserves the right to search persons, parcels and vehicles on the same. BECOMING DR. RUTH ANNE O’SULLIVAN (DR. RUTH K. WESTHEIMER) Anne is delighted to be making her Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. Since ﬁrst understudying Becoming Dr. Ruth, off-Broadway in 2015, Anne has been performing the role in theatres around the country; last staged in 2019 by Stephen Nachamie at the New Repertory Theatre in Watertown, Mass. She celebrates over 45 years as a working actor in more than 100 productions including Broadway’s Blythe Spirit. Her off-Broadway credits include Marisol (The Public Theater), Mere Mortals (Primary Stages), Juno (Vineyard Theatre), The Plough and the Stars (Irish Repertory Theatre) and Mary MacGregor at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, where she is a member. Mark St. Germain’s play Freud’s Last Session ran for two years Off-Broadway, closing July 24th, 2012. The play has been open in Argentina since January 2012 and in repertory in Sweden, Australia, Denmark. His play Becoming Dr. Ruth premiered in July 2012 at the Barrington Stage Company in the Berkshires, played at Hartford Theaterworks, and was brought to NYC to the Westside Theatre. Scott and Hem in the Garden of Allah co-premiered in the summer of 2013 at the Contemporary American Theater Festival and Barrington Stage Company. His play The Best of Enemies, first produced by the Barrington Stage Company, is now being produced throughout the country. The Fabulous Lipitones, a musical comedy co-written with John Markus, premiered at the Theatrical Outfit in Atlanta in summer, 2013, and then at Goodspeed Playhouse. Mark’s other plays include Camping with Henry and Tom (Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Awards), Ears on a Beatle, the God Committee, Out of Gas on Lover’s Leap, and Dancing Lessons (premiered at the Barrington Stage Festival). Mark wrote the Tammy Wynette Musical Stand By Your Man, which began at the Ryman Theater in Nashville. With composer Charles Strouse he co-wrote the book for his adaption of Dreiser’s American Tragedy. With composer Randy Courts Mark has written the perennial musical The Gifts of the Magi as well as Johnny Pye and the Foolkiller (AT&T Award Grant) and Jack’s Holiday (Playwrights Horizons). Television work includes Writer/Creative Consultant for “The Cosby Show” and Dick Wolf’s “Crime and Punishment.” He co-wrote director Carroll Ballard’s film “Duma” and produced and directed the documentary “My Dog, An Unconditional Love Story,” with Richard Gere, Glenn Close, Edward Albee and others. Mark also wrote the award winning children’s book “Three Cups.” Mark is an Associate Artist of the Barrington Stage Company, a recipient of the William Inge Festival’s New Voices Award, and a member of the Dramatists Guild and the Writer’s Guild East. He is an alumnus of New Dramatists.

STEPHEN NACHAMIE (DIRECTOR) Stephen is making his Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park debut. His Broadway credits include Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of She Loves Me as Associate Director. Stephen’s New York credits include Little Shop of Horrors Reunion Concert with Alan Menken, Small Town Confessions with Alice Ripley, Buyer & Cellar, My Name Is Asher Lev, Rounding Third at the Penguin Repertory Theatre, the premieres of Mr. Conﬁdential, Foreverman and Torch Song Trilogy with Seth Rudetsky. BRIAN PRATHER (SET DESIGNER) Brian is excited to be making his debut at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. His off-Broadway work includes Daniel’s Husband at Primary Stages, Mrs. Warren’s Profession at the Gingold Theatrical Group, Becoming Dr. Ruth at the Westside Theatre and Freud’s Last Session at New World Stages. Brian has designed internationally for the Chungmu Art Hall in South Korea and regionally for Asolo Repertory Theatre, the Alley Theatre, Goodspeed Musicals, the Barrington Stage Company, Theaterworks Hartford, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and many more, including the national tour of A Night With Janis Joplin. Brian is a regional Emmy Award nominee for the design of The Kate concert series on Public Television, a Joseph Jefferson Award winner for Set Design in Chicago and the winner of multiple Berkshire Theatre Critics Association awards. AMBER WHATLEY (LIGHTING DESIGNER) Amber is a lighting designer for live performance. Her skills include lighting for theatre, dance and concert, and lighting for the camera. Her technical strengths are programing and moving light programing. She was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. She then completed her B.F.A. at Savannah College of Art and Design. RUTH churches in the Southeast U.S. Her MFA graduate studies in Lighting Design at The University of Texas at Austin led her to the creation of Blackout, a workshop and video series in which her objective is to bring lighting design and technology awareness to Black youth and under-supported communities. Her research interests include creating accessible lighting knowledge for BIPOC youth and under-supported communities, new works and non-traditional theater design. As a recent graduate and post MFA fellow at The Ohio State University, Amber enjoys teaching, freelance designing and furthering the development of Blackout.

FABIAN OBISPO (SOUND DESIGNER) Fabian returns to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, where his credits include Speaking in Tongues, Love Song, An Inﬁnite Ache, Havana Is Waiting and Ah, Wilderness! His recent off-Broadway credits include Public Theater’s Out of Time (The National Asian American Theatre Company), The Chinese Lady (MaYi Theater Company), Sea Wall/A Life, Oedipus El Rey and Teenage Dick. His musical Felix Starro premiered off-Broadway last fall.
