Supporting local businesses is always important—and very rewarding—but, now, more than ever, our great community of shops, restaurants, and unique retail destinations need all the support they can get. And with a fresh coat of asphalt on Laurel and the downtown transformation underway, we’re very much looking forward to wel-
coming everyone back to a construction-free Madeira in the near future!
The sidewalks alongside our downtown shops aren’t the only things that are changing these days. The postCOVID world is full of new opportunities to create, manage, and build businesses, and Madeira isn’t alone in growing its work-from-home and solopreneur network. It’s easier than it’s ever been to attend meetings with contacts from around the world in the comfort of a suit coat and slippers. But with the pros of WFH convenience comes the lack of social interaction, connection, and community.
That’s why we’re putting extra emphasis on meeting the needs of those working for themselves this year. Whether you’re been going it alone for years or just stepping into a post-corporate gig, the Chamber of today must adapt to help you solve your everyday challenges just as much as brick-andmortar retail and corporate giants.
This year, we’re re-launching our Coffee with Champions program and gearing additional programs and events at helping businesses of one become a
part of community of many, and lean on each other for sharing ideas, struggles, or just a good ole cup of joe.
Not only are we rethinking how we support today’s business owner, but we’re also beginning to lay the groundwork for how Madeira needs to look two decades down the road. The Chamber brought local leaders together at the beginning of the year to ensure we’re all rowing the boat in the same direction to meet the needs of today’s residents and business community. We’ve also worked closely with City offi cials and local urban planners to create a visitation for how downtown Madeira should evolve in the near term to create long-term success and put Madeira on the map as a great place to eat, shop, and play.
So much eff ort is going on behind the scenes each and every day with people excited to see Madeira thrive for decades to come and we’re excited to be a catalyst in bringing a million little pieces together to move us forward.

Twelve miles from downtown Cincinnati, a quaint and charming city sits near I-71, waiting to be discovered. Founded in 1910, the city of Madeira originally sat along a rail line spanning Cincinnati to West Virginia. Over the years, the city transformed into a welcoming, safe, and tight-knit town with a strong focus on community. Madeira offers a great mix of historic homes, cozy neighborhoods, and thriving businesses, and it has become the perfect place for families to lay down roots and become a part of an ever-growing community. Madeira is bustling with retail, food, and entertainment. At the heart of the city, you can find more than 150 local shops—fulfilling any service you may need. A variety of cozy bookstores, tasty coffee shops, and unique boutiques reside within the central district. If you’re seeking even more shopping and dining, journey to the north side of the city for other opportunities.
The strong sense of connectedness has tied Madeira residents together for years. The city hosts numerous local events, like a weekly Farmers’ Market that runs on Thursdays from May to December, where handmade goods, fresh produce, and beautiful flowers can be purchased. And each June, businesses host Girls’ Night Out, an evening overflowing with fun, where hundreds of shoppers embark on a summer shopping spree.
The picturesque city has long been recognized as an ideal location to raise children. Madeira is ranked as one of the best cities in Ohio to live and support a family, and the city prides itself on educational excellence and safety. Madeira City Schools consistently rank in the top 10 schools in the state. The district offers a multitude of Advanced Placement courses, college-readiness classes, extracurricular activities, and experienced teachers to help support children in their educational journey.
Venture into the 1920s by visiting the Madeira Historical Society located inside the enchanting Miller House (a columned Sears catalog home) that offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its fully furnished and restored rooms and eccentric, vintage artifacts. In 1948, Elizabeth and Bruce Miller purchased the home. 50 years later, Elizabeth donated the house to the historical society. By 2004, it opened as a museum for the public. The Miller House showcases refurbished old collectibles that transport guests back in time, such as a wooden radio, an aerial TV, and a century-old railroad scale.

Madeira continues to work on infrastructure projects that are intended to enhance roadways, improve safety, and modernize essential services city-wide. Since the start of construction, crews have worked to repurpose roadways, install underground utility lines, and create a more functional and inviting streetscape.
Phase two for Miami Avenue is now underway, including construction of new sidewalks, streetscapes, and a roadway to improve pedestrian safety. There may be temporary lane closures as the construction continues. New streetscape will also be installed
on Laurel Avenue, between Miami and Euclid avenues. Construction began in early March.
Laurel Avenue received new sidewalks, street lighting, curb and gutter work, and re-pavements on the roads, with work having begun in early March.
Camargo Road will have a new watermain installed, new sidewalks, new curbs, and resurfacing on the roadways. Construction is targeted to start in late May or June.

On January 23, Duke Energy completed a new gas line installation on Miami Avenue. All telecommunication lines will be relocated underground and, once completed, all utility poles will be removed. This project has been awarded two grants from the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority and the Federal Infrastructure program.

Nothing adds to the small-town feel of Madeira quite like its three major parks. More than 30 acres of the city’s approximate 3.4 square miles is fi lled by park property, lush with vibrant green spaces, children’s play areas, sports sections, and community events. With indoor and outdoor activities that accommodate for all seasons, these parks ensure that residents both young and old can fi nd their place in the nature of Madeira. The parks have undergone recent developments, including McDonald Commons’s completed 2023–2024 renovation and the addition of Pocket Park in 2023.
McDonald Commons improvements will continue this year, which includes plans for new bike racks, benches, and a fi tness station. The new and improved park will be the site of multiple community events, including Madeira’s Independence Day Celebration, Memorial Day March, Shakespeare in the Park, Vintage Baseball Game, and Street Dance. Sellman Park will likely follow McDonald Commons as the next to undergo renovations, with a steering committee guiding the current improvement plans. To help reforest McDonald
Commons’s natural areas where invasive species were removed in 2024, the Madeira Tree Board plans to host an Arbor Day seedling planting event. Madeira was first recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City in 2021, and has since remained dedicated to the mission of nurturing and expanding the city’s urban tree canopy.
For the residents who like to avoid the crowds, walking trails in McDonald Commons, Sellman Park, and the Nelle v. Hosbrook Bird Sanctuary offer a quiet refuge. Families can enjoy the sanctuary’s Story Trail, which offers both an escape into nature and into a children’s book. Children in grades 4–9 are also welcome to expel some energy by joining the summer wiffl eball league’s morning games, which run in June and July.
McDonald Commons
McDonald Commons offers 2,200 square feet of renovated green space equipped with amenities fit for any age group. The park includes an ADA-friendly playground, a community room, two pickleball courts, six multi-use courts, community gathering spaces, and more.
Nestled in a mostly wooded area behind Madeira Middle School, this 10-acre park boasts various sports amenities, such as its baseball diamond, soccer field, tennis courts, basketball courts, and sand volleyball court. The space also includes a reservable picnic shelter and playground equipment.
Nelle V. Hosbrook Bird Sanctuary
Located a block away from Madeira’s business section and across from the Madeira Branch Library, this two-acre wooded area provides a refuge for both birds and book lovers. The park’s Story Trail highlights a new book each season, giving families the opportunity to enjoy a good story while in nature.
This roadside park is tucked into the corner of Euclid Avenue and Camargo Road, equipped with a bench, short walking path, and native plants.
The Madeira City School District strives to highlight youth academic excellence and teaching. Aiming for success and exceeding expectations, the district earned a five-star rating in the most recent Ohio Department of Education report card across all categories. As one of only eight districts in Ohio to receive this top rating, the district continues to uphold its high status.
Further, Madeira’s annual Quality Profile tracks student success by focusing on achievements it values most: academics, arts, student leadership activities, fiscal stewardship, parent and community involvement, student services, and staff and district recognitions. This approach shows how its students continue to excel in ways that go beyond what’s included in state tests,
helping them grasp real world skills to succeed in a life beyond Madeira.
