WE COME TO AGATHA CHRISTIE THROUGH HER MYSTERIES — bodies in libraries, clues in teacups, the delicious promise that if we pay attention, meaning will reveal itself. But what playwright Heidi Armbruster gives us in Mrs. Christie is a deeper kind of mystery. Not just who did it, but who am I? What do I do when the life I’m living no longer fits? How do I become the author of my own story?
This play sits inside that capital-M Mystery — the faith that meaning exists even when it feels impossible to find. That, if we stay curious, if we resist despair, something will eventually make sense. Maybe that’s why we’re drawn to mysteries in the first place: they remind us that chaos isn’t the end of the story.
Heidi’s writing understands this. She cracks open the mythology around Agatha and lets us sit with the human being inside it — brilliant, wounded, funny, furious, searching. She doesn’t flatten her into a legend. She lets her be contradictory. Brave and petty. Lost and luminous. And through Lucy — who represents all of us who love Christie’s work — we see ourselves reflected back.
As Associate Artistic Director here at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, I spend a lot of time thinking about what stories we tell and why. This is a city that knows how to show up for the arts, how to stay curious, how to gather together and listen. Mrs. Christie feels like exactly the kind of play that belongs here: one that centers two women’s interior lives, women who seem so different on the surface, and trusts us to sit with their complexity.

Q & A WITH PLAYWRIGHT HEIDI ARMBRUSTER

Joanie: I’d love to start by asking where this play came from.
Heidi: My mom died. I was grieving, and I’m a big reader, but I didn’t feel like in the aftermath of my mother’s passing I had the bandwidth for reading “smart-people books.” So, I went back to murder mysteries. And I had always assumed Agatha Christie was for middle schoolers and library basement book clubs — not for real readers. And I read around her a lot. I read Ngaio Marsh, Josephine Tey, Margery Allingham — the Golden Age writers. But then I was backstage in New York during a show with a brand-new Kindle that came preloaded with And Then There Were None. I read it in the dark backstage between my entrance at the beginning of the play and the end of the play, and I was completely blown away by the brilliance of it. So, I started down the rabbit hole of Agatha Christie and in a very short amount of time I had read all 63 of her novels.
At that moment in my life — crawling out of a life-altering loss and the grief that came after that — I found Agatha Christie to be a really good friend. She’s very loyal, and she makes a contract with her readers: at the beginning she breaks the world, she takes something very ordered and makes it deeply chaotic, but then by the end of the book she puts it back together. She reorders it ingeniously. Her novels are very accessible, funny, plot driven, and they’re page turners. There’s a little bit of social commentary, so they don’t feel too saccharin. I just found the puzzle plot of it very comforting.
In and around that I became aware of her biography. She had also lost her mother around the same age I was, and I became aware of the disappearance. That’s when I
started writing the play. Processing my own grief by way of exploring Agatha Christie’s grief.
Joanie: Why do you think we tend to categorize her as “lesser” literature? Is there judgement because they are accessible?
Heidi: Or because she’s a woman? Or because women like them? The “Notebook Guy” has a new book about puzzle plotting, and in it he makes an argument that suddenly in the 1920s people had leisure time. Board games became popular; people were listening to radio dramas. In these books, there is a murder game the reader is engaged in. So, is it because it’s a game for bored housewives who now have appliances and don’t spend all day every day trying to feed and clothe their families?

Joanie: There’s also a tendency to dismiss work that’s popular. Her books have been translated into countless languages. She’s one of the most widely published authors in history.
Heidi: That doesn’t happen by accident.
Joanie: This play spans a hundred years, moving between 1926 and 2026. What does Lucy offer contemporary audiences?
Heidi: Lucy is an everywoman. She’s stuck in a job that doesn’t light her up. She’s hit some walls and feels her life is at a dead end, and she finds escape and comfort in Agatha Christie’s puzzles. In other words, Lucy is diametrically opposite from Agatha. So, what can these two connect on over the space of their differences and the hundred years?
Anyone who has experienced grief or chaos recognizes it in others immediately, regardless of era or circumstance. That fragility is universal.
Joanie: And then there’s Agatha Christie…
Heidi: When we think of Agatha Christie, we think of an icon, this rich British Dame — but at thirty-seven, she not the figure that we think of her as yet. She’d only just written The Murder of Roger Akroyd, which would have still cemented her place in the pantheon, but she wasn’t who we know her as today. She’s in a fragile place in her life.
There’s also a tension in the play between Agatha’s public mask and her private self. I’m interested in the idea that the work and the woman are inseparable. Her secrets, her shame, her reinvention — those things don’t exist apart from the books. They fuel them.
Learning about her life gave me a deeper appreciation for her work. Americans, especially, love a reinvention story. Christie’s life is a chrysalis story as much as it is a mystery.
Joanie: What does Christie mean to you personally?
Heidi: Permission. Permission to transform in middle age. To do something new. Permission to chart a new course that wasn’t written in your high school yearbook. She kept evolving —through her forties, fifties, sixties, seventies. That’s incredibly inspiring to me.

Hearing Enhancement
Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre and the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre both have a hearing loop system which works with existing T-Coil or Telecoil enabled hearing aids or cochlear implants. For assistance, please see a member of our house staff.

Actors’ Equity Association strictly prohibits the use of cameras or recording devices in the theatre during the performance.
CHILDREN
Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted to Playhouse productions unless otherwise advertised. Parents with disruptive children will be asked to leave the theatre.
CONCESSIONS
Al’s Bar serves drinks in two locations – one bar on the main level in the Schueler Lobby and one bar on the upper floor. Casual dining fare and snacks from The Delish Dish are available for purchase on the upper floor. Drinks are allowed in the theatres, however food is not.
FACILITY ACCESSIBILITY
Patrons who are mobility-impaired may be dropped off outside the Playhouse’s main entrance. The walk from the top level of the parking garage to the entrance into the Schueler Lobby to the main level of the Rouse Theatre can be made without having to take any stairs. An elevator is available for access to the balcony level and first rows of the Rouse Theatre and the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre. Accessible seating for wheelchairs is subject to availability and should be requested at the time of ticket reservation.

LATECOMERS AND READMITTANCE
Latecomers are seated at the discretion of the house manager, which may be as late as intermission. Latecomers may be denied admission depending on the demands or structure of a particular production. Please allow yourself adequate time to arrive, park and be seated. Should you need to leave the theatre during a performance, readmittance and seating will be at the discretion of the house manager so as not to disturb the audience and actors.
PARKING
The Park Board reminds you that Eden Park officially closes at 10 p.m. As a grace period to the Playhouse, the police will not ticket vehicles until one half hour following the end of a performance. The Playhouse assumes no responsibility for anyone receiving a ticket for illegal parking. Convenient parking is available in the Playhouse garage. Purchase parking in advance to secure a space. Parking can also be purchased from our parking attendant immediately before the performance if available.
Accessible parking for those with disabilities is located in the Playhouse parking garage. Parking for persons with disabilities is limited and must be reserved and paid for in advance. All vehicles using these spaces must display a valid disability placard.
PROHIBITION OF WEAPONS
The Ohio Revised Code (R.C. 2923.126) has established the privilege of carrying a concealed handgun to Ohio citizens who have obtained the proper license. The same law explicitly grants private employers in the state the right to prohibit their employees and visitors from possessing firearms on the employer’s premises. With this notification the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park is informing
you that it prohibits weapons of any kind on its premises, and reserves the right to search persons, parcels and vehicles on the same. This policy applies to all employees, patrons and visitors to the facility.
RESTROOMS
There are four types of restrooms: women’s, men’s, all-gender and family. One of each type is available on each level. Restrooms are all wheelchair-accessible.
SMOKING/VAPING
Smoking/vaping is prohibited in the entire theatre complex.
