CIMSA is a space for growth and self- actualization for Indonesian medical students through activities as an effort to empower medical students and improve the nation's health level. CIMSA encourages medical students to be empowered and become agents of positive change from community to national level. As future health leaders, it is very important for medical students to be ready to face global issues. In carrying out its activities, CIMSA uses data and conducts research as a reference and internal review to improve health and well-being. Apart from going directly into the community, CIMSA believes in a holistic approach to eliminating problems, organizing and creating sustainable change in society is necessary. Therefore, CIMSA also plays a role as a young advocate in voicing CIMSA's commitment to health, youth, education and humanitarian issues.
ACTIVITIES
Event,
Campaign, and Celebration
One of the most possible ways to spread impacts in order to improve a nation's health is to conduct several activity programs such as events, campaigns, celeb-
rations, and projects; All of these activities will certainly have an impact on both medical students as the executor and the targeted participants, especially in terms of knowledge, attitude, and practice.
A celebration is a kind of activity that is designed to celebrate national or international days and weeks, such as National Nutrition Day, Human Rights Day, World Antibiotic Awareness Week, etc. This activity usually implemented the aforementioned matters as the main theme of the activities.
A campaign is an organized activity that aims to socialize and increase public awareness of a problem with clear goals and final results. This type of activity usually carries several issues that are currently happening and involves social media to engage a larger number of audiences. Throughout the year, we plan campaigns by taking the momentum of national and international day celebrations.
Community Development
Community development is a process of empowering a commu-
CIMSA Profile Book
nity that aims to improve their health, social, and environmental quality of life through a series of sustainable and impactful interventions in a long period of time. In the process, CIMSA takes holistic approaches and inclusively involve the community in every step so the community can actively participate and has an important role within their own environment.
Issues and topics carried out on community development vary among CIMSA locals, depending on the problems found in the community during the assessment process. Some locals choose communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, dengue fever, and diarrhea, while others focus on noncommunicable diseases such as children and maternal health, diabetes, smoking cessation, healthy lifestyle, and etc. To support each of our community development programs, CIMSA locals develop several cooperation and collaboration with relevant parties, such as Governmental and NonGovernmental Organizations.
Sustainable Project
When a community development program achieves its goals and the targeted community has been well empowered to solve their problem, the program can be transformed into a sustainable project to ensure the goals of the project continue to be met through activities that are consistent and relevant with the
current condition.
In a sustainable project, we invite the empowered community to actively participate in empowering another community that shares similar characteristics and problems as them by implementing a new set of meaningful and holistic interventions. This phase will be continued for a longer period of time to maintain its impact and sustainability until the targeted goals are achieved.
We believe that with our sustainable projects, we can deliver big impacts to society. Before we create some projects, we are doing assessment first to figure out the main problems in the society and find the right solution for the problems. Assessment is the most crucial part for creating sustainable activities, so that we make an organized assessment data system.
CAPACITY BUILDING
As mentioned on CIMSA Tagline, CIMSA has the strong will to Empowering Medical Students, Improving Nation’s Health. To make it happen, CIMSA held several Capacity Buildings activities.
Capacity building is a process through which individuals acquire, implement, and maintain their personal capacities and skills. These skills will bring Indonesia into a healthier nation.
We developed a training system for our members to improve their soft skill and hard skill so that they can implement it when they are doing projects or even until they become future doctors. In our training system, our members are not only playing a role as the objects (trainee) but also the subjects (trainer). Our training system also synchronizes with IFMSA training, so that we can provide international training for all medical students in Indonesia to be participated.
To run the capacity building activities CIMSA have 14.374 Trainers that are ready to give a capacity building with our integrated-standard modules as references. Over past years CIMSA held more than 300 capacity building activities with a total approximately 1100 hours of training have been delivered.
RESEARCH
Over 20 years since CIMSA was made, we have been dreaming the same dream and achieving the same goals; "Empowering Medical Students, Improving Nation's Health". The dream has been an ongoing process and has gone through numerous changes. Which also includes the Research and Development (RnD) Division. We aim to provide as much data and evaluation as possible to achieve relevant and impactful activities and strategies.
In just over a year, a little less than 600 assessments were made from
all over Indonesia assessing the needs of their concerns towards health, as well as knowledge and attitudes regarding health issues circulating among the people in Indonesia. These assessment results were used to plan a specific event, campaign, or project for a specific community, ensuring its relevance and impact.
Not only is an assessment used to plan for an event, but these assessments have also been a basic necessity in CIMSA. That includes measuring the needs, concerns, and conditions of CIMSA's members, which is also a priority. These types of assessments were aimed at showing how members cope with their organizational activities, how comfortable they are, and as an evaluation of the issues they face. The assessments will not only provide detailed and tailored experience, but will also help in making effective strategies to improve our working environment.
All in all, data, research, and assessments are a part of CIMSA. It has been one of the crucial parts of creating a big impact on society, and it will always be the basis for achieving our dreams.
ADVOCACY
CIMSA adheres to the broad description of advocacy which puts forward the broader scope includes indirect efforts to influence a policy that increases community participation, provides opportunities for less empowered CIMSA Profile Book
communities so that their problems can be resolved by the people's policy makers, as well as building cooperation within the community. CIMSA's advocacy is conducted through helicopter view assessment which is carried out by community-based and research-based advocacy.
CIMSA's role as a youth advocate is to act with how to empower, mediate, and build relationships (networking) as a community advocate.
We commit to our goals on improving the nation’s health by stating our stances on health issues in need of attention as a form of advocacy.
