Welcome to the May issue of Total Grooming Magazine — a month that perfectly captures the energy, evolution, and ambition within our industry.
Spring always brings a renewed sense of momentum, and this issue reflects exactly that. From the buzz of Crufts to the everyday innovations happening in salons across the country, it’s clear that grooming continues to move forward at pace. This month, we celebrate excellence at the very highest level with our interview with Hannah Rooney, whose historic Best Groomer in Show win is not only inspiring, but a reminder of what passion and dedication can achieve.
That same commitment to progress can be seen across the industry. Groomers are rethinking the products they use, with natural formulations becoming an increasingly important part of the modern salon — driven by client awareness, animal welfare, and professional standards. At the same time, investment in equipment such as tables and bathing systems continues to shape not just efficiency, but the long-term health and sustainability of grooming careers.
We also shine a spotlight on the people behind the profession. This month’s Groomer of the Month, Kara Boyd, embodies the resilience, creativity, and heart that define our community, while Rachel Bean reflects on a busy spring season filled with learning, connection, and the ever-important role groomers play in canine welfare.
And as always, we continue to deepen our understanding of the animals we care for — with Katie’s insightful look at feline behaviour reminding us that true professionalism lies in recognising what isn’t always obvious on the surface.
As you turn these pages, we hope this issue leaves you feeling inspired, informed, and proud to be part of such a dynamic and evolving industry.

Introduces new Pet Tear Stain Wipes with
London-based, The Paws Lab has introduced a new range of tear stain wipes for dogs which are designed to provide a gentle and effective solution for removing unsightly tear stains and build-up around the eyes. Infused with advanced antimicrobial ingredients, Pet Tear Stain Wipes help maintain a clean, fresh face without irritation, even for the most sensitive pets.
Wiping a dog’s eyes is a vital part of home grooming that supports both their comfort and long-term health. While some “eye gunk” is normal, regular cleaning prevents several health issues and helps you monitor your pet’s well-being. It helps to prevent infection by removing trapped dirt, dust, and pollen which can cause irritation and lead to bacterial or fungal infections if left to accumulate around the eye. It removes uncomfortable dried discharge (rheum) which can become hard and crusty, which is painful for a dog and can eventually cause skin irritation or dermatitis underneath the buildup. It removes red or brown stains which are caused by porphyrins in tears that oxidise when exposed to air. Routine cleaning also makes you familiar with what is normal for your dog, allowing you to quickly spot signs of redness, cloudiness, or abnormal discharge that

require a vet’s attention. Some flat-faced breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs have shallow eye sockets and skin folds that trap moisture and debris, often making daily cleaning essential.

Formulated with SilverTi+ – a combination of nano silver and titanium dioxide together with, deionized water. aloe extract and vitamin E, The Paws Lab®, has taken pet care to the next level with their new Tear Stain Wipes which offer antibacterial and antifungal protection while targeting the root causes of tear stains. The soft, alcohol-free formula gently lifts away tear residue, dirt, and debris, helping to prevent staining and reduce the risk of irritation or infection. Perfect for daily use, these wipes are safe, soothing, and specially designed for the delicate For further information please visit: www.thepawslab.co

UK Considers Ban on Common Flea Treatments from Over-the-counter under new UK rules.

Ministers have begun an eight-week consultation on letting only veterinary practitioners or pharmacists give out the potent, pesticide-based flea treatments, to ensure “correct usage”.
Following this news, I’m getting in touch with expert comments from Michael Sheils, Brand Ambassador at Christie’s Direct, about the potential impact this ban can have on groomers, who may start to see an increase in untreated flea cases in their salons.
Michael: “This would have a serious knock-on effect for grooming businesses, an absolute disaster.
“If a dog arrives with fleas, it’s not just a small inconvenience, it creates a real risk of infestation across the entire salon. In those situations, the groomer has no choice but to deal with that dog separately, which takes additional time

and care. Afterward, the whole space needs to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before any other dogs can be brought in, which slows everything down significantly.
“There’s also a health aspect to consider. Fleas don’t just affect dogs - they bite humans too. This puts groomers and salon staff at direct risk of being bitten while handling infested animals, which is understandably a major concern in a hands-on environment like this.
“For solo groomers, this can mean losing a significant portion of the day. For larger salons that are set up to handle multiple dogs at once, it disrupts the entire workflow and affects other clients.
“That’s why over-the-counter flea treatments are so important. When used properly, they’re safe, effective, and play a key role in routine pet care.
Regular monthly treatment at home is the simplest and most reliable way to prevent fleas in the first place.
“If those products were no longer easily available, treatment would likely depend on veterinary visits. That adds cost and inconvenience and it could lead to pets being treated less consistently, or not at all.
“From a groomer’s perspective, animal welfare is always a priority. Fleas aren’t just a minor issue; if left untreated, they can lead to skin irritation, coat damage, and more serious health concerns over time.
“Overall, this would not only put additional pressure on grooming businesses but could also have a negative impact on the wellbeing of the animals themselves - while also increasing the risk to the people working closely with them every day.”

With a lifelong connection to animals and a deep commitment to welfare-led grooming, Kara Boyd has built Fairy Dog Mother Grooming into a thriving, team-focused business. From mentoring the next generation to supporting nervous dogs, her journey is one shaped by passion, resilience and heart.
Growing up surrounded by animals, it was perhaps inevitable that Kara Boyd would build a career working with them. “My dad is a farmer, so animals were a huge part of my everyday life,” she explains. “Growing up I had every pet you can imagine, from hamsters to even a lamb in the house.”
That early immersion shaped her future, and by the time school work experience came around, Kara already knew where she belonged.
“I chose to work in a kennels and cattery, and I loved it so much that I managed to secure a job there,” she says. From the age of 14 to 18, Kara learned the realities of animal care, quickly discovering the part of the role that truly resonated with her. “My favourite part of the job was washing and caring for the dogs. I loved how relaxed and happy they became after a bath.”
That realisation sparked something bigger. “It made me realise that

grooming wasn’t just something I enjoyed – it was something you could actually build a career around.” Kara began researching grooming roles and was “incredibly proud to secure the position at my very first interview.” From there, grooming felt like a natural
progression. “It allows me to combine my lifelong love for dogs with hands-on care, patience, and trust-building.”
Throughout her journey, Kara has been shaped by strong mentors. “One of my biggest idols is Julie Harris,” she says. “She was one of the teachers in my

very first grooming job, and I learned so much from her.” She also credits Amy Manser, with whom she completed her City & Guilds qualification, praising her “attention to detail and passion for grooming.” Colin Taylor has been another constant source of support. “He’s someone I can call at any time for advice or reassurance,” Kara adds. More

recently, competition grooming has brought new influences. “My very good friend Hannah Bowles has taught me so much, particularly with hand-stripping Cocker Spaniels.”
Today, Kara runs Fairy Dog Mother Grooming as a busy high-street salon with 17 employees, including her mum. “It gives the salon a real family feel while still being very professional,” she explains. Alongside grooming, the business offers dog walking and an enclosed exercise field, allowing a truly holistic approach to care.
What truly sets the salon apart is its ethos. “We’re particularly known for working with nervous and aggressive dogs, always without restraint,” Kara says. “Everything we do is about keeping the dogs calm, comfortable, and feeling safe.” The team also regularly grooms large breeds and actively competes together, with Kara covering costs so her staff can grow and gain recognition.
Running a business hasn’t been without challenges. “One of the biggest challenges for me has been keeping

staff happy and motivated,” she admits. An even tougher period came during a two-year HMRC investigation. “It was incredibly draining emotionally and mentally, despite the fact that I had done nothing wrong.” That experience, alongside dealing with complaints and negative reviews, has reinforced the importance of resilience and perspective.
Despite it all, Kara’s love for grooming remains unwavering. “I just bloody love dogs and cats,” she says. “No two days are ever the same.” She also values the grooming community itself. “Groomers tend to be a bit wacky, creative, and freespirited, and that suits me perfectly.”
Looking ahead, Kara sees the industry moving “strongly towards education, welfare, and higher standards.” In line with that vision, she has recently opened an academy and small dog daycare. “Teaching has always been a dream of mine,” she says. Above all, her motivation is deeply personal. “What matters most to me is making my two children proud – showing them that their mum followed her dreams.”

A good grooming bath can make the difference between a stressful wash and a smooth, efficient start to the groom. From comfort and safety to durability and workflow, the right bath supports both groomer and dog. Here are five essential features that help make a grooming bath practical, safe and built for everyday salon use.
A bath that allows you to work at the right height is essential for reducing strain on your back, shoulders and arms. Adjustable-height baths or raised platforms can make a huge difference during long grooming days. When you’re not constantly bending or stretching awkwardly, bathing becomes quicker, more comfortable and far less physically demanding over time.
Safety in the bath is just as important as on the grooming table. A non-slip base or rubber mat helps dogs feel secure and prevents them from sliding, which can cause stress or injury. When dogs feel stable under their feet, they’re more likely to stand calmly, making the bathing process safer and smoother for everyone.
Lifting large or nervous dogs into a bath can be one of the most physically demanding parts of grooming. Baths with doors, ramps or lower entry points make access far easier and safer. Reducing heavy lifting protects the groomer’s body while also helping older, larger or anxious dogs enter the bath with less stress.
A grooming bath needs to withstand constant use, water, shampoos and cleaning products. Stainless steel and high-quality composite materials are popular because they are durable, hygienic and easy to sanitise between dogs. Smooth, well-designed surfaces also prevent hair buildup, helping maintain a clean and professional salon environment throughout the day.

Good drainage keeps bath time efficient and prevents water pooling around the dog’s feet. A well-positioned drain and reliable plumbing help water flow
away quickly, keeping the workspace tidy. Paired with a quality shower head and temperature control, this allows groomers to rinse coats thoroughly and comfortably every time.

Grooming tables and bathing systems are the backbone of any salon. Investing in the right setup not only improves efficiency and results, but also protects the groomer’s health and enhances safety and comfort for every dog.
From the moment a dog enters the bathing area to the final finishing touches on the table, these core pieces of equipment influence every stage of the groom. As the industry continues to evolve, modern systems are offering groomers more flexibility, improved ergonomics and better results than ever before.
Cheryl Howard, owner of Le Chien, believes quality equipment plays a key role not just functionally, but visually too. “Having good-quality grooming tables and baths serves many purposes. Not only do they look aesthetically pleasing to your clients, but they also provide sturdiness, creating a safer and more secure feel for the dogs using them, as well as being more comfortable for us groomers.”
That balance between presentation, practicality and safety is something echoed across the industry. A wellequipped salon doesn’t just look professional – it feels professional to both clients and their pets.
Costin Stoica, Head Groomer at Animal Magic, highlights the physical demands of grooming and the importance of equipment that supports the groomer. “High-quality tables and bathing systems are extremely important in a grooming salon. If you are grooming all day, every day, having equipment that adjusts properly and supports your posture makes a huge difference, especially for your back.”
Costin also emphasises the importance of stability. “A strong, stable table is essential for safety. When your equipment is well built, it gives both the groomer and the dog more confidence during the grooming process.”
Confidence is a recurring theme –not just for groomers, but for the dogs

themselves. Melissa Bull, owner of Phoenix Dog Grooming in Falkirk, has seen first-hand how the right setup can influence canine behaviour. “I can honestly see more confidence in the dogs I groom by having electric baths and tables because you can teach the dogs to jump in and out safely,” she says. “Getting the dogs to do this themselves helps to build their confidence tenfold.”
Melissa adds that this improved confidence carries through the entire groom. “You can see an improvement in their compliance throughout the groom as well – they’re more confident to turn around, sit and stand when asked.”
With so many options now available, choosing the right tables and bathing systems can feel overwhelming –particularly for those setting up a new salon. However, there are a number of key considerations that experienced groomers consistently return to.
For Cheryl, workspace and accessibility are top priorities. “I look for a table with a good amount of workspace. I like to have everything close to hand,” she explains. “Having a larger tabletop means I never have to turn away from the dog.”
She also stresses the importance of secure handling. “I prefer an H-frame for safe tethering,” Cheryl says, adding that adjustable tables are essential for both comfort and practicality, especially when working with larger breeds.
Costin agrees that quality should always come first. “It is always better to invest a little more in a well-built table or bath rather than buying something cheaper that won’t last,” he says. “Groomers should consider stability, durability and how comfortable the equipment will be to work with every day.”
Beyond the basics, modern bathing systems are offering additional features that can significantly improve efficiency. Costin points to hydro bathing and shampoo-mixing systems as valuable tools. “These systems can improve washing efficiency and coat quality,” he explains.
Melissa takes a slightly different angle, focusing on tailoring equipment to the type of work being carried out. “You should consider what size of dogs you’ll be grooming,” she says. “Larger dogs will benefit from electric baths and tables that lower right to the ground, which is also safer for your spine.”

She also highlights the importance of considering salon layout and space. “Think about the size of your working area and where your table will be positioned,” Melissa adds. “If you’re choosing a hydrobath, don’t forget things like steps or ramps to assist the dogs and protect your body.”
The impact of tables and baths extends far beyond convenience. The right setup can dramatically improve efficiency, safety and even the longevity of a groomer’s career.
“Poor-quality tables will cost you

dearly in the long run, particularly when it comes to your back health,” Cheryl warns. “Constant bending, lifting dogs up and down, and working at the wrong height will take its toll.”
She also points out the behavioural impact on dogs. “If your table wobbles easily, imagine asking a dog to stand steady while you carefully groom them. They’ll be stressed, shaking and panting, which won’t make for a pleasant groom.”
Costin echoes this, noting that adjustability is key to maintaining control and comfort. “A table that adjusts very high and very low allows the groomer to work comfortably with both large and small dogs,” he says. “This helps
maintain better control and improves the quality of the final groom.”
Melissa believes that protecting your body should be a priority from day one. “All too often we hear of dog groomers having to give up after just a few years because their back hurts or their shoulders are sore,” she says. “The healthier and more comfortable you are, the better groomer you’ll be.”
She also raises an important point around safety. “Using baths with sharp edges or tables that are rusting and falling apart will put your customers’ beloved pets at risk of injury,” Melissa adds.
Many groomers will remember starting out with basic or improvised setups, gradually upgrading as their business grows. Cheryl reflects on how far equipment has come over the years.
“For many years, I used a household enamel bathtub raised on platforms and mixed shampoo in bottles,” she says. “It worked well for over 20 years.”
However, upgrading made a significant difference. “I then moved to steel baths, which I loved, and later to a hydro bath. I have never looked back,” Cheryl explains. “It speeds up bath time more than you can imagine and saves my back immensely.”
She had a similar experience with grooming tables. “I used to work on a workbench-style setup. Once I invested in proper electric tables, I no longer had to lift dogs awkwardly. I simply lower the table, let the dog jump on, and raise it to a comfortable height.”
Costin has also seen clear benefits from upgrading. “Since upgrading, my back doesn’t hurt anymore after long working days,” he says. “Everything became more comfortable, efficient and professional.”
Melissa’s journey mirrors this progression. “When I first started grooming, I was using a human bath and an old table,” she says. “Once I upgraded, the difference in the dogs standing still on the table was amazing.”
She adds that investing in an electric bath was a turning point. “No more sore back lifting 40kg into it – winner,” Melissa says.
Beyond functionality, the materials used in grooming equipment can have a significant impact on durability, hygiene and overall performance.
Richard Lee, owner of Aeolus Pet

UK, explains why professional-grade equipment is worth the investment. “The quality of the equipment used every day has a direct impact on efficiency, safety and the overall standard of work produced,” he says.
Richard highlights the benefits of different bath materials, particularly fibreglass and stainless steel. “Fibreglass baths are highly resistant to scratching and maintain their appearance well over time,” he explains. “Stainless steel baths, on the other hand, are extremely durable and easy to clean, making them ideal for high-volume salons.”

He also reinforces the importance of ergonomic design. “Professional tables often include electric or hydraulic height adjustment and anti-slip surfaces,” Richard says. “These features reduce strain on the groomer and improve safety for the dog.”
For those entering the industry, deciding where to allocate budget can be challenging. However, all contributors agree that tables and baths should be high on the priority list.
“As I said above, tables are one of the most important pieces of salon equipment you will ever purchase,”
Having visited the Factory to see these tables being built, we were blown away with the build quality, attention to detail and quality of the materials and process used. These are extremely high quality, “high end” tables which are suitable for those who want their equipment to last many many years. Colleges, professional groomers and Vets will benefit from years of trouble free operation and reliability, a real worthwhile investment.

The Smart table is the smallest and cheapest electric table in the range of tables.

The Scissor table is a medium-sized electric table. It is one of the bestselling tables in the range.

The Space table is a mediumsized electric table. The Space is designed for groomers who like to sit at the grooming table.

Cheryl says. “You spend around 70% of your day at your grooming table, so make it a comfortable one.”
She advises that while hydro baths are beneficial, they are not essential from day one. “You can start with a highquality steel bath and upgrade later,” Cheryl adds.
Costin takes a similar view. “A strong table and reliable bath may cost more initially, but they last much longer,” he says. “In the long run, investing in quality equipment actually saves money.”
Melissa encourages new groomers to buy the best they can afford. “If you’re able to get an electric bath and table, it will last you well into your career and you’ll feel better for it,” she says.
She also offers a practical tip. “You can probably save a bit of money on scissors when starting out and invest that extra into your table and bath instead.”
Ultimately, investing in high-quality tables and bathing systems is not just about convenience – it’s about building a sustainable, professional and safe grooming environment.
As Richard concludes, “The right equipment is not simply a purchase – it is an investment in the long-term success of the salon.”
And as the experiences of groomers across the industry show, it’s an investment that pays dividends every single day.

When
designing a grooming space that is efficient, ergonomic, and built to last.
The choice of tables and bathing systems becomes the foundation of the entire salon. At Christies, the range of professional tables and baths reflects decades of industry understanding— combining durability, safety, and practicality with thoughtful design.
A grooming table is more than just a work surface—it dictates posture, control, and workflow. Christies offers a comprehensive selection tailored to both busy salons and mobile groomers.
From electric and hydraulic tables to manual and folding options, the range is designed to suit every environment. Electric tables, such as low-level lift models, allow groomers to adjust height effortlessly, reducing strain and improving handling. This is particularly valuable for high-volume salons where ergonomics directly impact productivity.
Hydraulic tables provide a reliable, cost-effective alternative, delivering smooth height adjustment without the need for power. Meanwhile, folding tables remain a staple for mobile groomers or those working in compact spaces, offering portability without sacrificing stability.
Across the range, key features remain consistent: robust construction, non-slip surfaces, and secure restraint points. These elements ensure both groomer safety and animal comfort— critical factors in maintaining control during detailed work. As highlighted by Christies, tables are designed to be “adjustable, durable and designed for safety” .
Bathing is often the most physically demanding part of grooming, and Christies’ range of baths is engineered to ease that burden while improving workflow.
The selection includes stainless steel
baths, fibreglass tubs, hydraulic systems, and fully electric bathing stations, ensuring solutions for every salon size and budget . Stainless steel models dominate professional environments thanks to their durability, hygiene, and resistance to corrosion.
High-end options, such as electric lift baths, are designed with ergonomics at the forefront. These systems lower to allow easy walk-in access and raise to a comfortable working height— reducing lifting and strain. For example, electric baths can smoothly lift heavy animals while maintaining stability, making them ideal for busy salons handling a variety of sizes .
Practical features elevate usability further. Many baths include sliding doors or ramps for accessibility, integrated shampoo trays, and restraint bars for control during washing . These additions streamline the bathing process, allowing groomers to work more efficiently without compromising safety.

One of the defining strengths of Christies’ offering is its adaptability. Whether outfitting a large commercial salon or upgrading a home grooming space, the range caters to varying needs:
• High-volume salons benefit from electric tables and baths that prioritise speed, ergonomics, and longevity.
• Start-ups or smaller setups can opt for hydraulic or manual solutions that deliver performance at a lower investment.
• Mobile groomers rely on compact, foldable tables that balance convenience with professional-grade stability.
Christies also positions itself as more than just a supplier, offering guidance to help groomers choose the right setup from the outset —a crucial factor in avoiding costly upgrades later.

Ultimately, tables and baths are not just equipment—they define how a grooming salon functions day to day. The right combination improves efficiency, reduces physical strain, and enhances the overall grooming experience for both professional and pet.
With a broad, carefully curated range, Christies continues to provide solutions that meet the evolving demands of modern grooming—where performance, safety, and comfort are no longer optional, but essential.

Rachel Bean shares reflections from a busy spring in the dog world, from Crufts highlights and industry friendships to behind-the-scenes work with Vet on Set. Plus, a timely seasonal first aid tip to help groomers spot and prevent grass seed problems.

Spring is always a busy and exciting time in the dog world, and this year was no exception. Like many of you, I spent time at Crufts, which remains one of the most incredible celebrations of dogs anywhere in the world.
For anyone working with dogs professionally, it’s not just a show, it’s a hub of knowledge, networking and inspiration.
This year I was proud to be there as part of Team Cambridge Institute of Dog Training and Behaviour, speaking with dog owners and professionals about canine welfare and first aid. Events like Crufts are a fantastic opportunity to educate and inform dog lovers about

the importance of understanding our dogs’ health and behaviour. Prevention and awareness are always the first step in good animal care.
Of course, Crufts is also a chance to catch up with friends from across the dog industry. A big shout-out goes to my wonderful friends at Antinol and the iPET Network. As many of you know, I had the privilege of writing the iPET Network qualifications in Canine First Aid, something I remain incredibly proud of. Seeing so many professionals committed to improving their knowledge and skills in canine care is always inspiring.
Another personal highlight this year was bringing my camera along. Crufts is such a hive of activity that it’s a dream
environment for candid photography. From competitors preparing ringside to emotional moments between owners and their dogs, there are so many beautiful little snapshots of the dog world in action. Capturing those behindthe-scenes moments reminded me just how passionate and dedicated our community really is.
Away from the show halls, it has also been a busy month for Vet on Set, with several days of filming taking place. I’m incredibly proud to have helped establish this venture, which provides specialist animal welfare services for TV and media productions.
The aim of Vet on Set is to ensure that whenever animals appear on screen,
their health, safety and wellbeing are always the top priority.
At Vet on Set, we can provide TV productions with professional help and advice to ensure the health and wellbeing of each animal is monitored and maintained throughout their role in your production.
It’s wonderful to see the growing awareness across the media industry that animals deserve professional oversight when they are part of filming or promotional work.
As we move through Spring, one seasonal issue that dog groomers are often among the first to notice is the presence of grass seeds.
These small, arrow-shaped seeds begin appearing as the weather warms up and can easily become lodged in a dog’s coat, ears, paws or skin folds. Because groomers work so closely with the coat and skin, you are often the first professionals to spot the early signs of a problem.
grooming,
• Dogs excessively licking a paw
• Sudden head shaking or ear irritation
• Small swellings or red, inflamed areas
• A dog reacting when a specific area is touched
Grass seeds can migrate through the skin if left untreated, potentially causing infection or deeper tissue problems.
If you spot a seed sitting loosely in the coat, it can often be removed carefully. However, if it appears embedded, is inside the ear canal, or the dog shows pain or swelling, it’s important not to attempt removal.
Instead, advise the owner to seek veterinary attention as soon as possible, as early treatment can prevent much more serious complications.
You can also help educate owners by reminding them to check their dogs after walks in long grass and to keep coats well maintained during the warmer months.

As pet owners become increasingly conscious of what goes on their animals’ skin and coat, natural grooming products are gaining popularity in salons. From gentler ingredients to environmental benefits, switching to natural formulations can support pet wellbeing while enhancing your service offering. Here are five key benefits of making the move.
Many pets suffer from sensitive skin, allergies, or irritation caused by harsh chemicals found in some traditional grooming products. Natural formulations typically use plant-based ingredients that are milder and less likely to cause reactions. For groomers, this means a safer option for pets with delicate skin and greater peace of mind when working with animals prone to sensitivities.
Natural grooming products often avoid sulphates, parabens, artificial dyes, and synthetic fragrances that can sometimes strip the coat or irritate the skin. By choosing products with simpler, naturally derived ingredients, groomers can help maintain a pet’s natural coat oils and overall skin balance, while also reassuring owners who are increasingly concerned about product transparency.
Ingredients such as aloe vera, oatmeal, coconut oil, and chamomile are commonly found in natural grooming products and are known for their soothing and conditioning properties. These ingredients can help support healthy skin, add moisture to the coat, and improve shine. Over time, this can lead to healthier coats and improved grooming results for many pets.
Modern pet owners are more informed and conscious about what products are used on their animals. Offering natural

grooming options can reassure clients that their pet’s wellbeing is a priority. It can also be a valuable talking point during consultations, helping build trust and demonstrating that your salon stays up to date with evolving pet care preferences.
Many natural grooming brands prioritise
sustainability, from responsibly sourced ingredients to recyclable packaging. By choosing these products, grooming salons can reduce their environmental impact while supporting brands that align with eco-conscious values. For salons looking to highlight greener practices, switching to natural formulations can be a simple yet meaningful step forward.

Natural grooming products are no longer niche. As pet owners demand safer ingredients and sustainability rises up the agenda, professional groomers are rethinking what they use in salons — without compromising on performance, results, or the overall client experience.
The grooming industry has always evolved alongside client expectations, but in recent years the shift towards natural products has accelerated at a noticeable pace. What was once considered a premium or specialist choice is now becoming part of everyday grooming practice.
This change is being driven largely by more informed pet owners. With increased awareness around ingredients, skin sensitivities, and environmental impact, clients are asking more questions about what’s being used on their dogs — and why. As a result, groomers are reassessing their product choices, balancing performance with transparency and sustainability.
There’s also a growing recognition that natural doesn’t mean less effective. Advances in formulation mean plantbased ingredients and gentler cleansing agents can deliver professional results while supporting skin and coat health.
Nathan Brown, owner of Fawkesway Grooming, has seen this shift first-hand in his salon.
“In recent years, I’d say the industry has definitely experienced a shift towards more environmentally conscious practices. Ranging from the ingredients in products to more sustainable packaging for things like brushes. I think owners also care more now about the products used on their dogs.”
This awareness is influencing not only purchasing decisions but also the overall grooming experience. Salons are increasingly positioning themselves as spaces that prioritise wellbeing — for pets, clients, and groomers themselves.
For Nathan, natural products are now delivering on both experience and performance.

“My choice of natural shampoo and conditioner is Melanie Newman Salon Essentials. These products use an Aloe Vera base and natural essential oils. The thing that makes these shampoos stand out for me is that not only do the different ranges have different scents, that smell great and have the salon
smelling like a high end spa, but they’re formulated for different coat types. For example, Relax for curly coated breeds, Purify for coarser coats etc.”
This move towards more tailored, natural formulations is a key part of the shift. Products are no longer one-size-fitsall but designed to meet the needs of

specific coat types and conditions while maintaining a more conscious ingredient profile.
Laura Redstone, Founder and CEO of For All DogKind, believes the rise of natural grooming sits at the intersection of multiple industry pressures.
“Natural dog grooming products are becoming more important because they sit at the centre of health, safety, client expectations, and professional reputation. The shift is driven by what dogs need, what owners now expect, and what groomers experience day to day in the salon. Owners are more ingredient aware and expect groomers to use products that support their pets’ wellbeing.”
Skin health is a major factor behind the move. Increasing numbers of dogs are presenting with sensitivities, allergies, and dermatological issues — something groomers are seeing more frequently.
“More and more dogs are showing allergies, dermatitis, and sensitivities than ever before. Groomers see this firsthand. Synthetic fragrances, sulphates, and harsh preservatives can trigger flare ups. Groomers can work more confidently knowing that natural products are less likely to cause reactions during or after the appointment. Natural formulations are proven to protect the skin barrier and support our pets’ wellbeing.”
Beyond health, there is also a clear business case. Natural grooming can help salons position themselves at a higher professional standard, supporting premium services and pricing.
“From a business perspective, groomers can differentiate themselves when using premium natural products to support premium pricing for their services which sets a higher professional standard.”
Importantly, the perception that natural products lack performance is fading.
“A decade ago, ‘natural’ often meant ‘it won’t clean the dog’. That’s not true. With over 10 years of groomers using FADK the testimonials speak for themselves. We offer transparency which has led to trust in our brand. Our formulations offer deep cleaning without stripping oils and create a spa-like experience that groomers value.”
For groomers considering making the switch, Laura advises a measured approach. “Natural products elevate the

grooming experience. My best advice is to look at independent product reviews. Trustpilot is a great source of honesty — good and bad. Look for products that list their ingredients, avoid sulphates and artificial fragrances. Starting small lets you test performance, scent, dilution, and client reactions without committing to a full range.”
As the industry continues to evolve,

natural grooming is proving to be more than just a trend. It reflects a broader shift towards informed choices, improved animal welfare, and more responsible business practices.
For today’s groomers, the question is no longer whether natural products can perform — but how quickly they can become part of the standard toolkit.

Winning Crufts’ first-ever Best Groomer in Show, Hannah Rooney has rapidly risen to the top of competitive grooming. In just 16 months, her skill, dedication, and passion for Wire Fox Terriers have set her apart. Here, she reflects on her emotional victory, her meticulous approach to handstripping, and the drive behind her remarkable success—and what comes next on her journey.

Winning the first-ever “Best Groomer in Show” at Crufts is historic. What was going through your mind when your name was called in the main arena?
Shock, first of all. I honestly thought a BIS was something that was going to elude me. Then it was, “Please don’t bring the microphone over,” because I couldn’t speak—I was so emotional.
You competed with your Wire Fox Terrier, Frank, and won the Handstrip

Champions class. What makes a truly exceptional handstrip, and what details were you most focused on in Frank’s groom?
Personally, I think an exceptional handstrip is a dog that’s fully hand stripped all over. It’s a complete dying art, in my opinion. Being able to do a full dog by hand stripping and work every single hair on them by hand—including all blending, legs, and head features—is a true skill. It’s something I’ve admired since having terriers.
I obsess over everything in my groom, but my focus with Frank, firstly, is the flat work. It’s something that takes most of the time, and you need to be precise with it. Then I spend quite a while working on the head and expression.
You’ve only been competing in grooming for around 16 months, which is incredibly fast to reach this level. What do you think helped accelerate your success so quickly? My husband answered this very quickly—

passion and determination. I’ve had wires for over 20 years now and have bred, owned, and shown them within that time, so I do have a longstanding love and understanding of the breed.
I have been very fortunate to have been helped by what I would describe as some of the best terrier groomers there are. I have relentlessly practised and travelled just to have some of these groomers show me tips. Improving and learning from them has been a key factor. Doing the grooming competitions has also helped. I’ve taken all feedback on board and tweaked my grooming to suit the competition ring.
After such a huge milestone at Crufts, what’s next for you? Are there any new goals, competitions, or projects you’re excited to pursue?
I am hoping to make Groom Team England and have been competing at all the shows over the last 16 months, so I am well on my way with points. But I need to keep that up, so I will be at the rest of the competitions this season.
I will continue to try and improve my grooms at each competition with the feedback given. I am also hoping to go and compete in Europe this year.
For groomers who dream of competing at events like Crufts, what advice would you give about preparing both technically and mentally for that level of competition?
Anyone wanting to give it a go—I would encourage them to do it. You have nothing to lose by it. Go and enjoy it. There are so many good, supportive people in the industry who are kind and helpful.
Technically—practise your grooms as much as you can. Go to seminars and shows and watch as many people as possible. Pick up things from everyone to help your grooming.
Mentally—just breathe, never stress. Have a plan in place for your groom, get in the zone, and enjoy it.

In her latest column, Katie explores why the quiet “good cat” on the grooming table may not be relaxed at all, and what subtle signs tell us.
Welcome to another month of Katie’s Cat Column.
This month we are looking at a phrase most people working with cats will have heard: “Oh, he’s a really good cat.”
Sometimes that is true. Some cats are naturally confident, tolerant and curious. But very often the “good” cat being described is not relaxed or comfortable at all. In many cases, what we are seeing is a cat that has gone very still because their nervous system has shifted into survival mode.
In other words, the cat isn’t calm. The cat has shut down.
Cats are masters of subtle communication. Unlike dogs, who often show stress more openly through vocalisation or movement, cats often respond to overwhelming situations by becoming very still and trying to make themselves small. To an untrained eye this can look like compliance.
The cat isn’t struggling. They aren’t vocalising. They’re sitting quietly on the table. It is easy to assume everything is fine.

But internally the story can be very different. A cat in shutdown may have elevated stress hormones and muscles held in tension even though they appear outwardly calm. Stillness in this case is not relaxation. It is a survival strategy.
When a cat feels trapped or overwhelmed during handling or grooming, this freezing response can occur. The cat is not cooperating. The cat is enduring.
This misunderstanding can lead to a common mistake when working
with cats. Because the cat is quiet, we continue.
We keep brushing, trimming or handling because the cat is being “good”. But what may actually be happening is that the cat is moving closer to their stress threshold.
When that threshold is crossed, the response can appear sudden and dramatic. Teeth, claws and explosive movement can seem to come out of nowhere.
From the cat’s perspective, earlier signals may already have been given and missed. Subtle cues such as ear position
changes, whiskers pulled back, pupil dilation, muscle tension or tail flicking can indicate that a cat is becoming uncomfortable.
Freezing does not equal acceptance. A cat who has stopped struggling has not necessarily agreed to what is happening — they may simply have switched strategies.
Animals move through different responses when faced with stress. Early signals may include avoidance or attempts to move away. If escape is not possible, the nervous system may shift toward freezing.
Understanding feline body language is about reading the whole animal.
A relaxed cat typically shows loose body posture, soft eyes and neutral ear position. A cat moving toward shutdown often appears different. Their body may become rigid or tightly tucked, their pupils may enlarge, and their whiskers and ears may move into more defensive positions.
These changes can be subtle, which is why observation matters so much when working with cats.
A cat who appears quiet or “well behaved” may actually be experiencing a shutdown response.

Some common signs include:
• Very still body posture
• Dilated pupils even in normal lighting
• Ears turning sideways or slightly back

• Whiskers pulled back against the face
• Tense muscles when touched
• Tail tightly wrapped or held stiffly
• Shallow or faster breathing
A cat showing several of these signs may be reaching their stress threshold. Pausing the groom, allowing a break, or ending the session early can help prevent escalation and protect the cat’s trust.
Perhaps the biggest shift when working with cats is redefining what we mean by a “good” groom. A good groom is not one where the cat stays perfectly still while everything on the to-do list is completed. A good groom is one where the cat’s welfare is protected and stress levels remain manageable.
The next time someone says a cat is “being good”, take a moment to look closer. Stillness does not always mean comfort.
