efore the ash, there is the wait. The seed someone entrusts to the soil, not knowing if they will see the harvest. The leaf that ripens to the rhythm of sun and patience. The hands that roll it like someone keeping a secret. When a cigar finally reaches the world, it carries centuries of a craft that refuses to be rushed: turning a plant into a moment of contemplation. To dress a cigar is not to make a box, a pouch, or a band. It is to rise to a story that began long before us: the story of its people, of a country that bets on what is its own, of every hand that rolled it. Our work begins where theirs ends: that nothing the cigar promises be lost on its way to the one who awaits it. In 1977, three siblings who loved the graphic arts founded ALGIERS IMPRESORES. Guillermo Arturo, María Isabel (Doña Bebé), and Felipe knew the pulse of several industries firsthand, tobacco among them. They did not know it yet, but they were tracing the start of
14AVO. AÑO 14
a dialogue that would last half a century: the one in which paper learns to speak the language of the leaf. We began with a single press. Over the years, where other workshops stopped short of what was hard, we saw an invitation. Where others said it couldn't be done, we learned to say here we go. So came varnishing, foil, the embossing few hands mastered. We never chased novelty for its own sake, but the standard the craft demanded. And though we had to wait, we managed to knock once more on the doors of the tobacco industry. Why do we say we dress a cigar, rather than merely "package" it? Simple. Because a cigar deserves its attire. The band, with its millimetric reliefs and its bronze, is the signature that crowns the work. The box, with finishes that still surprise us, is the promise before the promise: the instant the client opens it and finds that the essential can be beautiful too. And the pouch, a recent trend, is now a canvas for finishes once thought impossible.
Diferentes anillas y empaques hechos con la alta calidad de Algiers // Different rings and packaging made with the high quality of Algiers In nearly fifty years we have learned that excellence is not afraid to err: from each mistake we emerge with a steadier hand. From that single press we grew to two plants in El Salvador—one offset, one flexographic—to cuttingedge technology and a family of nearly three hundred people. Yet we have kept intact what those three siblings laid on the table in 1977: passion, dedication, and the conviction that a well-made package is an act of respect. Because when you take a cigar in your hands, breathe in its aroma, and pause to admire its band before lighting it, we want you to know that behind it there is a family proud to have crafted it, and another, in El Salvador, proud to have dressed it. A year from half a century, we give thanks: to those who entrusted us with something as precious as their product, and to those who have not yet done so—know that we are headed toward the next fifty years. And we want to celebrate them dressing the cigar alongside you.

Dortmund Is the Place to be Inspired, Gain Valuable Insights and Build Up Relevant Business Connections
very time we talk to Sabine Loos, managing director of Westfalenhallen Unternehmensgruppe, we learn valuable details about InterTabac, its twin trade fair, InterSupply, and the new events the group organizes around the tobacco industry. At the helm of InterTabac since 2011, the world's largest trade fair for tobacco products and smoking accessories, speaking with Sabine is speaking with an undisputed authority in the entire sector. And this occasion was not an exception; let's discover the relevant news that Sabine Loos reveals to us in this exclusive interview for our CIGARRO DOMINICANO magazine. CIGARRO DOMINICANO: How has the change of date of the fair influenced this 2026 edition? Going from the Thursday to Saturday format to the current Tuesday to Thursday date. SABINE LOOS: Naturally, we will only be able to fully assess the impact of the new schedule after this year’s event. As the organizer of the trade show, we did not make this decision alone but acted in consultation with the trade show advisory board, our partner associations and exhibiting companies. In doing so, we responded to a request from the industry for the event to include more weekdays. International participants also benefit from better flight and travel connections. For us, advancing a trade show is not only about introducing new events and content; it also means taking the needs of participating companies into account. Of course, this includes evaluating how exhibitors and visitors responded to and assessed the new schedule after the event. CD: How do the constant advertising restrictions and European regulations affect the tobacco sector in the organization of a trade fair that brings together so many exhibitors? SL: The regulatory framework has always shaped the tobacco industry – and therefore, of course, the organization of InterTabac as well. For us, it is essential to comply consistently with all applicable legal requirements while providing a professional environment for industry dialogue. As an international trade show, InterTabac is aimed at a clearly defined professional audience and brings together manufacturers, retailers, associations and other industry stakeholders. Particularly in an increasingly regulated market, the need for face-to-face dialogue, reliable information and shared guidance is growing. InterTabac provides the industry with a responsibly organized platform that is clearly geared towards trade visitors, enabling them to assess current developments, discuss changes in the market and engage with the European regulatory framework. What is clear to us, is that the more restricted other communication channels become, the more important
face-to-face interaction and direct contact with specialist retailers are. InterTabac provides a professional and clearly defined environment for precisely this purpose. CD: Organizing a trade fair as large as InterTabac and InterSupply requires extensive logistical planning. What strategy do you follow to achieve perfection in the organization of this great event? SL: I believe one of our greatest strengths as the organizer is our experience. InterTabac did not start out with 800 exhibitors. At its premiere in 1978, we welcomed around 80 exhibitors. We have therefore grown alongside the trade show. Over the years, our knowledge of the industry and its companies have expanded, as has our experience in working with international exhibitors and addressing their needs. We have also built up a strong industry network. Above all, however, our company can draw on a long history as an event venue. Last year, we celebrated 100 years of the Westfalenhallen. Today, the group hosts more than 1,000 events each year, attracting over 1.7 million visitors across trade fairs, congresses, conferences, music, sport and entertainment. CD: The Cigar Culture Summit has not only returned for a second edition, but now will hold a new event in Johannesburg, South Africa. What accounts for the success of this event, and what can you tell us about the event in Africa? SL: The cigar industry and specialist retailers have been among InterTabac’s core segments from the very beginning. With the Cigar Culture Summit, we created a focused industry format designed specifically around their needs. The highly positive response to its premiere shows that the industry values an exclusive setting that combines networking, knowledge-sharing and fresh perspectives – and many participants are happy to arrive a day before the trade show to take part. Together with strong industry partners, we are now evolving the format. For us, this also means exploring promising new markets – and we see South Africa as one of them. The program for Johannesburg is currently being developed. Our aim is to bring together manufacturers, distributors, specialist retailers and industry insiders, as well as newcomers to the sector and passionate aficionados. In doing so, we are opening the Summit specifically to the wider community for the first time and creating a comprehensive platform for cigar culture in South Africa. A closing message… InterTabac turns Messe Dortmund into the international meeting place for the whole industry. Leading companies from around the globe use this platform to present innovations, set trends and connect with a global audience of industry professionals. Come to Dortmund, let yourself be inspired, gain valuable insights and build up relevant business connections.

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
H E N K NOTA Managing Director of Vrijdag: Packaging Printing Company from The Netherlands
T
alking to Mr. Henk Nota, Managing Director of Vrijdag, is to learn in depth about the industry of printing high-quality cigar bands and packaging for cigars and luxury products. In this exclusive interview from its headquarters in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, he tells us about the strengths of this company with more than 120 years of history, as well as market trends. CIGARRO DOMINICANO: Who is Vrijdag and what are your core strengths? HENK NOTA: Vrijdag, based in Eindhoven in the Netherlands, has been producing cigar bands, labels, and paper and cardboard packaging for more than 120 years, since 1905. We supply leading customers in the cigar industry, as well as in the cosmetics, chocolate, and beverage industries. In addition to production, our focus is on packaging development and design. Our team of more than 100 motivated and skilled employees works every day to deliver top quality and thereby support the quality and image of our customers’ products. We distinguish ourselves above all through our quality, with extremely precise production using a variety of printing and finishing techniques. I sometimes say that many of our products, especially cigar bands, are actually small works of art. CD: What trends does Vrijdag see in packaging for premium consumer products? HN: In the cigar industry, we have seen a trend for several years towards larger cigar bands, as well as a
PHotoS: VrIJdag second band and, more recently, the application of what is known as a foot band. This allows our customers’ brands to stand out even more. The outer packaging, the cigar box, has also been upgraded into a beautiful gift pack, with a piano-lacquer finish, gloss and matte effects, or strong embossing to bring the box "to life." A notable development is that in recent years almost all major cigar brands have added cigars to their portfolios with a consumer price over $100. We also see this "premiumization" reflected in other markets in which we are active. By operating in different markets, we are able to apply our experience with techniques and materials from one market to others. Another important trend is the move toward more sustainable packaging. This trend is continuing worldwide, and we see, for example, that the EU is at the forefront. Driven, or required, by laws and regulations, new materials are being used and new concepts are being developed. CD: How is Vrijdag responding to these trends? HN: Vrijdag has always had a very strong focus on "making paper and cardboard beautiful." In particular, cigar bands, labels, and cardboard packaging have been at the core of our production since the company was founded. We have a very extensive and state-of-the-art machinery fleet that enables us to combine various techniques and provide our customers with packaging that helps promote their sales. In terms of sustainability, Vrijdag offers a broad range of "more sustainable" materials.
Cajas rígidas, embalajes de cartón duro con tapa, con o sin mecanismo de cierre // Rigid boxes, hard cardboard packaging with a lid, with or without a closing mechanism
14AVO. AÑO 28
Anilla impresa con alta precisión de detalles, hecha por Vrijdag // High printing techniques in cigar band, printed by Vrijdag Paper and cardboard are naturally more sustainable by definition than many other materials, but inks, bronze and metal powders, and glossy foils are also becoming increasingly sustainable. Examples include water-based inks and varnishes, bronze and metal powders made from minerals, and glossy foil layers that are now only a few microns thick. Vrijdag is also researching opportunities to develop packaging using less ink, or even no ink at all, for example as shown in the photo with the "white only embossing". As an alternative to wooden, metal, or plastic outer packaging, Vrijdag offers so-called "rigid boxes": hard cardboard packaging with a lid, with or without a closing mechanism. These can be produced as a base-and-lid version or with a hinged lid. The outside consists of a beautifully printed paper label, allowing us to express our customer’s brand identity perfectly using sustainable materials. We increasingly see cigar brands choosing cardboard outer packaging as an alternative to wood. CD: How can Vrijdag help customers? HN: We are regularly asked by brand owners for advice on their packaging, and not only in the cigar industry. This one-on-one consultancy has now become a fixed part of our service portfolio. During these conversations, we discuss the existing packaging range in detail, the requirements and wishes for the future, and conditions such as laws and regulations relating to sustainability.
