Following the successful launching of Family Creed: Fuerte Sol at the 2025 PCA Trade Show, we spoke with Guillermo León Herbert, La Aurora’ president, about this interesting project in which the “family creed” is involved in a series of premium cigars, made in their factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic.

CIGARRO DOMINICANO: What was the exact inspiration behind the creation of the Family Creed series? How did the idea of turning family values—your “family creed”— into a line of cigars come about?

GUILLERMO LEÓN HERBERT: The Family Creed series was born as a tangible tribute to the family creed that has guided every decision within the company and the family for generations. It stems from the desire to transform those values—respect for the land, patience in the drying process, and the generational transmission of knowledge—into blends capable of recounting that heritage through flavor, aroma, and quality. Each edition is, therefore, an expression of the family creed: a combination of tradition and artisanal excellence.

CD: What does “Family Creed” mean to you, and how does that creed translate into part of your business philosophy?

GLH: Family Creed embodies the convictions that have guided the León family for decades. It is a declaration of our commitment and identity: integrity in cultivation, uncompromising quality, and a commitment to the communities that contribute to and make it possible for every Dominican cigar to be enjoyed anywhere in the world. This philosophy translates into concrete practices: a job well done, respect for the land, and artisanal discipline in every cigar we produce.

CD: Why did you choose “Fuerte Sol” as the name for the first edition of the series?

GLH: Fuerte Sol (Strong Sun) is born from a line in the family creed that reads: “We are proudly a family of farming origins, of those forged by persistent work and strong sun.”

The sun symbolizes life, resilience, and the energy that drives cultivation and work in the fields. Its rays are the first to touch the tobacco leaves, the last to leave, and, among many other elements, contribute to the development of each leaf and the memories it will transmit to a smoker in the future. Fuerte Sol is a metaphor for the cigar’s character: strength and flavors that satisfy the most demanding palate, but also crafted with passion and respect for the time involved in the processes—the same

qualities that have defined the León family for generations.

CD: How did you select the filler, binder and wrapper leaves for this cigar?

GLH: For Fuerte Sol, we pursued balance and flavors with a unique character. The chosen wrapper is a San Andrés from Mexico, which contributes spicy nuances; the binder comes from Nicaragua; and the filler is a Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Pennsylvania blend; all of this brings us a complex smoke with prominent notes of pepper, nuts, and a citrus background— without losing smoothness in the burn.

CD: What were the technical or creative challenges in developing a medium-full strength profile (8.5/10) with a deep yet balanced smoke?

GLH: We sought a deep, characterful smoke with rich flavor and aroma, but without aggression. This required multiple adjustments to the filler proportions, fermentation times, and draw fine-tuning to ensure the potency remained aligned with harmony. I confess that we developed dozens of blends and panels, both internal and external, to arrive at this product that satisfies even the most discerning smoker.

CD: In your official description, you mention notes of oak, cedar, almonds, citrus, cocoa,

nuts, spices, and a toasted touch. How did you achieve that sensory balance?

GLH: This balance is the result of combining tobacco leaves from different varieties and origins, but with complementary profiles; and a fermentation process designed to highlight their nuances. The San Andrés wrapper offers spicy depth and hints of cocoa; the filler contributes nuts, citrus notes, and wood; and the box-pressed construction favors a gradual and coherent evolution of flavor.

CD: What type of smoker do you have in mind with Fuerte Sol?

GLH: Fuerte Sol is primarily designed for experienced smokers seeking a structured and complex smoke, although its balance makes it accessible for those climbing towards more potent profiles. It is not a starter cigar, but certainly one that rewards the smoker’s attention and time.

CD: How many editions do you foresee within the Family Creed series?

GLH: The Family Creed series is composed of four editions, conceived as a set of blends that express different attributes of the family creed. While Fuerte Sol is the first edition, La Aurora will announce subsequent editions as each blend becomes ready to faithfully represent its corresponding essence.

CD: What message do you hope to convey through this series to new generations of smokers and the premium tobacco community?

GLH: We want to show that tradition is not static: it evolves, transforms, and remains relevant. Family Creed invites cigar aficionados and new generations to discover the origin and character of a house with over 120 years of history; always using premium tobacco as a bridge between sharing and enjoying life’s pleasures.

CD: What is the perfect pairing for this cigar series? Any specific Dominican rum?

GLH: That’s a very easy question to answer! The ideal pairing for Fuerte Sol is our E. León Jimenes 110 Aniversario Rum, a rum that has received numerous international awards, most recently being named the World’s Best Rum in 2025 by the New York Spirits Competition, where it also received a double gold medal. This rum was initially conceived and created to accompany cigars, but the result is a unique spirit that we now recommend for any occasion. Its profile of ripe fruit, caramel, and toasted oak complements the blend’s notes of spice, nuts, and cocoa, achieving an elegant and refined harmony.

Trabajo en equipo como parte esencial del proceso productivo // Teamwork as an essential part of the production process

In the cigar industry, nothing is accidental. Every band, every texture, and every finish speak even before the cigar is lit. Within this world of precision and craftsmanship, Algiers has built a solid and discreet relationship with some of the most demanding brands in the sector. To understand this journey, we spoke with Lucía Alger de Rodríguez, who for more than two decades has worked closely with clients in this industry, overseeing every detail of the process.

CIGARRO DOMINICANO: How did Algiers begin its path within the cigar world?

LUCÍA ALGER DE RODRÍGUEZ: Around 2001, we began working with a few clients in this segment. It was a gradual approach, project by project. Over time, those same clients began trusting us with more specialized work and recommending us to others.

That growth took place with patience and consistency. Each new project required learning more and continually raising our standards.

CD: What do clients value most when working with Algiers?

LAdR: Our close support. They value having us involved from the initial idea through to the final result. It gives them confidence to know there is a team committed to delivering what was promised, especially when it comes to timing.

When clients see the finished product, many are surprised to find that the original concept has materialized exactly as they envisioned it. They appreciate feeling that it is a true team effort, with everyone aligned around what the brand expects.

CD: In such a demanding market, what sets Algiers apart?

LAdR: Commitment. Algiers takes on the responsibility of the factory that manufactures the cigars as its own. Many times, we respond to emergencies or sudden changes in schedules that are simply part of the reality of any operation.

This shared sense of responsibility has strengthened long-term relationships with clients.

CD: What do you enjoy most about working with this industry?

LAdR: The passion it inspires. Each

AND THE ART OF DRESSING THE CIGAR

consumer has very specific preferences, and many value the human effort behind a cigar—from its production to the beauty of the bands and the care given to the packaging. Knowing that we are part of that chain is deeply meaningful.

CD: What capabilities and techniques stand out at Algiers today?

LAdR: Every package is a piece in itself. A print finish, a well-executed embossing, or the right material can make all the difference. Even in something as small as a cigar band, there is a great deal of beauty hidden in the details.

Today, Algiers produces both flexible packaging—such as freshpack—as well as specialized offset pieces, including cigar bands, outers, and displays for pouch-style bags. The company has also been a regional pioneer in incorporating bronzing techniques, a finish that adds elegance and character to printed pieces.

I’m directly involved in the process, reviewing proofs and overseeing details on the production floor. It’s not just my job, it’s the way we work at Algiers.

Looking ahead, the company is preparing for an important milestone. In 2027, Algiers will celebrate 50 years of history, reaffirming a craft where time, precision, and respect for detail continue to make all the difference.

VRIJDAG

El proceso totalmente automatizado de Vrijdag ofrece eficiencia y alta calidad gracias a sus avances tecnológicos // Their fully automated process offers efficiency and consistent quality through technological advancements and optimization.

Hermosa anilla hecha por Vrijdag // Eye-catching cigar band made by Vrijdag

CELEBRATES A MILESTONE, 120 SUCCESSFUL YEARS IN MARKET

PHOTOS: vRIjDAG

Vrijdag, the label printing specialist, is celebrating 120 years in market, always up-to-date. To have an overview of those years, the company transformation, the market requirements, CIGARRO DOMINICANO told with Vrijdag’ Managing director, Mr. Henk Nota, in an interesting conversation which also covered the future and its challenges.

CIGARRO DOMINICANO: Vrijdag celebrates its 120th anniversary. How would you summarize the evolution of Vrijdag in one sentence?

HENK NOTA: The evolution of Vrijdag can be summarized as a transition from artisanal and manual work to a fully automated process, offering efficiency and consistent quality through technological advancements and optimization.

CD: What do you consider the most important technological investment of the past five years?

HN: The most important technological investments of the past five years are investments in new machines for the assembly of rigid cardboard packaging and advanced methods for applying powders such as bronze and more sustainable minerals. Rigid cardboard packaging can be used not only as gift packaging but also as an alternative to, for example, wooden cigar boxes. This contributes to more environmentally friendly and lighter packaging solutions. Additionally, cardboard is very printable, which will enhance the brand’s image.

CD: You also produce for brands like Cohiba and Fuente. How does such a collaboration work on a creative and technical level?

HN: Such a collaboration is an intensive team process. Creation, design, technical feasibility, sustainability, the use of new materials, and the processing of packaging and labels all play an important role. These collaborations can sometimes be established within a week or a few weeks, but there are also numerous examples where the design process and the creation of a new brand or design take a year or even years.

CD: What techniques do you use today to protect cigar bands against counterfeiting?

HN: Today, we use various techniques to protect cigar bands and packaging against counterfeiting. Firstly, the design itself plays a crucial role. The more detailed the design,

We observe the high printing techniques in cigar band, printed by Vrijdag

the harder it is to copy or counterfeit the cigar band. Additionally, the printing techniques we apply are of great importance, especially the combination of different printing techniques. We use embossing or multiple levels of embossing and often very detailed details in foil. Furthermore, the application of powders such as mineral powders or bronze powders. All of this combined provides extra security. The choice of ink and varnish also plays a role. Finally, the die-cutting of the cigar bands. A band with a serrated shape, for example, offers a different level of security than a standard rectangular band.

A third technique to protect cigar bands against counterfeiting is the use of visible and invisible security techniques and materials. This can include niks or varnishes and holographic foils. These foils are specially made with features of the cigar brand, sometimes readable with special equipment such as infrared, laser, or ultraviolet. Additionally, we can code the bands with a unique number or a non-copyable QR code.

Last but not least, the most recent technology we apply for counterfeiting protection is the use of NFC chips (Near Field Communication). These chips have a security level comparable to bank cards in payment transactions. Each NFC chip in the cigar band has a unique code that is checked with a database in the Cloud, confirming the product’s authenticity.

Especially combinations of these different possibilities increase the security against counterfeiting.

CD: Do you see a shift from traditional to more modern or minimalist designs in cigar bands?

HN: No, there is not really one major shift visible. There is a market for more modern and minimalist designs, but classic traditional designs of brands that have existed for decades remain dominant and popular.

CD: What do you see as the biggest challenge for the graphic sector in the next ten years?

HN: The biggest challenge for the graphic packaging industry in the next ten years lies in creativity, efficiency, and service. Combining these elements is crucial for success in an ever-changing market.

CD: How do you recognize a quality band? Does this go hand in hand with a quality cigar?

HN: No, the quality of a cigar and a cigar band are not automatically linked. A customer of Vrijdag once said that their customers find their cigars taste better with our bands. That was a wonderful compliment.

A quality band is first recognized by the design and the details incorporated into that design. If the design also tells a story, that certainly contributes to the qualitative experience of the cigar afficionado. Secondly, of course, the production of the band. How the ink, powders, foil, embossing, and die-cutting are executed. These two aspects together largely determine the quality of the band.

CD: Do you expect more collaboration between printers and blockchain or track-andtrace companies in the future?

HN: Yes, I expect more collaboration between printers and blockchain or track-and-trace companies in the future. This collaboration can help improve the transparency, security, and efficiency of the supply chain, ultimately increasing customer satisfaction.

LITTO D. GÓMEZ

CONOZCAMOS AL VICEPRESIDENTE DE RELACIONES MINORISTAS Y VENTAS DE LA FLOR DOMINICANA

CIGARRO DOMINICANO:

Antonio -Tony- y Litto D. Gómez // The Gómez brothers

LITTO D. GÓMEZ

LET’S MEET THE VICE PRESIDENT OF RETAIL PARTNERSHIPS AND SALES OF LA FLOR DOMINICANA

CIGARRO DOMINICANO: How did you get started in LFD?

LITTO D. GÓMEZ: Being born into the business, it is hard to pinpoint an exact moment. Since I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was to be around our beautiful little business at any capacity, whether that be spending my summer vacations running around causing chaos in the factory or traveling across the United States to go to trade shows to interact with customers and see our sales team do their thing. There has never been a doubt that this is exactly where I wanted to be.

CD: What has been your experience at the company that has led you to become VP of Retail Partnerships and Sales today?

LDG: My parents always made it very clear that if I wanted to be a part of the business, I needed to work from the ground up and learn every part. As soon as I was legally able to work, and up until graduating college, I began preparing orders, packing boxes and, eventually, visiting customers during my summer vacations and any other breaks from school. Once I graduated, I packed my bags and began traveling back and forth to the Northeast where I worked as a sales rep for around a year. During this time, I made it a priority to learn as much as I could about my customers and their side of the business. It was also a great opportunity for me to learn about my own company from their perspectives and figure out where it was that LFD may have fallen short. It is an experience I will forever be grateful for and the lessons I learned have become the foundation for where I want to take this company in my current role as Vice President of Retail Partnerships and Sales.

CD: Since LFD is a family business, how have your parents influence your development in this industry?

LDG: In every way, shape, and form. I was given the privilege to have a back seat view in turning something that started off as a crazy, stupid, idea by two complete outsiders with 0 prior knowledge of tobacco, into a that is brand recognized and championed globally. My parents built a culture defined by individuality, respect, grit, and an innate desire never compromise. Growing up, my parents never made me feel like I needed to be a part of the business. On the contrary, they encouraged me to explore my own interests and made it known that I had their full support to do so. Little did they know that this was always my true love. When the time came and they realized that I was determined to make this my life, they

made it very clearly that I, just like they did, needed to earn my place here and that nothing was ever going to be given. I needed to struggle, and learn, on my own. It is beyond a doubt the most important value that they have instilled in me, and it is the root of the chip on my shoulder to be great that I wake up with every single day. And that, is something I will forever be grateful for.

CD: With your arrival as VP of Sales, what innovations can we expect at LFD?

LDG: My number one is to build a company that is brick and mortar first, while also demanding a level of upmost respect for our brand and the quality of our product. Moving forward, you will begin to see many policies and event structures that aim to bring true value to the retailers in forms other than regular discounts. With such a rich history, we want to bring our stories and values to the consumer directly. All our releases moving forward will serve to honor our roots, while also continuing to innovate as much as possible.

CD: What has changed in the way cigars are marketed today?

LDG: In such a competitive market, consumers are expecting the best of the best in terms of quality, packaging, craft, and the way we come

to market, which continues to elevate the overall product that we are tasked with creating. I feel like our consumers are getting younger and younger, and they are beginning to ask deeper questions of blends, growing and manufacturing processes, and the origin stories of us, the manufacturers. For me, this means educating rather than pushing, and also sharing the rituals that help elevate one’s experience whilst smoking a cigar.

CD: In such a technological world, why is selling cigars through retailers still important?

LDG: To me, brick and mortar will forever be our number one priority. The brick-andmortar retail shop is the only place that we can come together as equals, as cigar lovers, and leave all our baggage at door, which is a beautiful thing in today’s world. Additionally, the brick-and-mortar retailers are the ones who champion and promote our brands to our end consumers when we aren’t physically present. They are the ones who truly build the cultures of all our brands.

To close this interesting interview, I would like to thank CIGARRO DOMINICANO magazine for the privilege of appearing in this publication and I am excited to continue my journey through this industry.

Finca Altura de Natura Cigars ubicada en las altas montañas de República Dominicana // Altura Farm, located in the high mountains of the Dominican Republic

Jacob Yfrach, presidente y fundador de Natura Cigars en la finca Altura // Mr. Yfrach, President and Founder of Natura Cigars at Altura Farm

NATURA’S THIRD HARVEST LANCERO ABOVE THE ORDINARY:

Single-Farm Origin Tobacco, Shaped by Altitude and Time

For aficionados of boutique Dominican cigars, Natura is more than a cigar company — it is a story of conviction, patience, and the relentless pursuit of purity. What began in 2020 as a bold experiment has evolved into a distinctive voice within the premium cigar world, guided by the belief that tobacco grown with intention and respect for its environment can express something truly unique.

Following the success of its first two harvests — and the international recognition they have earned — Natura Cigars now proudly unveils its Third Harvest, a bespoke Lancero vitola that marks the next chapter in the brand’s evolution.

True to Natura’s foundation, Third Harvest is crafted entirely from tobacco grown on the company’s Altura Farm, located in the high mountains of the Dominican Republic. Cultivated at high altitude and processed through slow, low-temperature curing and fermentation, the tobacco develops thicker leaves rich in essential oils, natural sugars, and character. At 4,500 feet above sea level, this rare environment does not simply grow tobacco — it shapes it. Quite literally, Altura stands above the ordinary.

The story began in 2020 with First Harvest, a limited-release Dominican puro made exclusively from Altura Farm tobacco. Produced in very small quantities, it introduced cigar enthusiasts to a new expression of Dominican terroir shaped by cooler temperatures and extended aging. Second Harvest followed, refining balance and depth while preserving the purity and discipline that define the brand.

Last year, Natura expanded this journey with the release of Petit Altura, officially launched at InterTabac. This compact puro combined tobaccos from First and Second Harvest — wrapper, binder, and filler entirely from Altura Farm — delivering remarkable complexity in a smaller format and reinforcing Natura’s commitment to single-farm origin tobacco.

One of the defining challenges — and innovations — behind Natura’s work at altitude has been varietal development. As Jacob Yfrach, President and Founder of Natura Cigars, explains: “Most traditional tobacco varieties simply do not thrive in cold mountain climates like ours. That reality led us to begin developing our own varietals — plants capable of adapting to and expressing the character of this unique environment.”

Now, Third Harvest builds on that foundation with intention and precision. The Lancero vitola was chosen deliberately to highlight structure, balance, and complexity. Medium to bold in strength, it reveals layered notes of refined woods, subtle herbs, and a clean, lingering finish that reflects both its origin and meticulous process. Each cigar is presented in elegant boxes of ten, underscoring its artisanal and limited nature.

Cultivating tobacco at altitude continues to present challenges. As Yfrach adds: “We still face issues like slow growth and low yields, but those challenges are part of what makes each harvest meaningful.”

Third Harvest represents the maturity of Natura’s vision: single-farm origin tobacco, refined through patience and shaped by the mountain air that defines Altura.

The official launch of Third Harvest will take place at the Premium Cigar Association Trade Show (PCA 2026) in April. Retailers, wholesalers, and aficionados can experience the cigar firsthand at Booth #4240, where Natura will showcase its most anticipated release to date.

With Third Harvest, Natura Cigars continues to push boundaries — proving that innovation, guided by respect for the land and the leaf, can elevate the cigar experience into something deeply personal.

TRES HERMANOS PRECISIÓN

SUIZA, ALMA

RADHAMÉS RODRÍGUEZ COMPRÉS: En realidad, he formado parte de ARTISTA toda mi vida.

Radhamés Rodríguez Comprés, Tercera Generación de Artista Cigars // Ram Rodríguez, third generation of Artista Cigars

RRC: Se avecinan muchas novedades.

THIRD GENERATION OF CIGAR MAKERS INVOLVED IN THE GROWTH OF ARTISTA CIGARS

For CIGARRO DOMINICANO Magazine, it’s amazing to speak of tobacco generations and the remarkable work that new generations do in the evolution and growth of these traditional companies, since, in the Dominican Republic, the tobacco industry is one of the few sectors where family businesses prevail, developing and progressing from generation to generation.

On this occasion, we spoke with Radhamés Rodríguez Comprés, third generation of Artista Cigars, who together with his sister, the company’s great team, and under the leadership of his father, Radhamés Rodríguez, has

seen the company grow and today is part of its great evolution and international expansion.

CIGARRO DOMINICANO: How long have you been part of Artista Cigars?

RAM RODRÍGUEZ: In reality, I’ve been part of Artista my whole life. My first memories are in the factory, playing hide and seek in the bale warehouse. I was probably 4 years old, and my father used to pay me 1 peso for every Saturday I went to the factory.

In my teenage years, I had to go to the factory after finishing my homework, and during summer holidays I worked half days,

Monday to Friday. I moved through different roles every week.

Since I was a kid, I always tried to convince my father to create a brand, and when I was 22 years old, I started taking my role in the factory more seriously — that’s when I opened our Miami operations.

CD: During these years, what has changed in the company?

RR: Our company is very different now. When I was a kid, we were fewer than 100 people; today we are a proud family of over 2,000 members, with operations in the USA, Ecuador, Hong Kong and in four provinces of the Dominican Republic. All of that is thanks to teamwork and the great leadership of my father.

CD: What has this generational evolution you are experiencing meant for you and for the company?

RR: It has been a challenge, but fortunately my father, my sister, and I overcome every obstacle. We are family first and business owners second.

CD: Given that the tobacco industry is very traditional, how does Artista Cigars combine tradition with new technologies?

RR: There are always new ways to grow through technology, but there are two things we always respect: the process (proper fermentation, giving the tobacco only water, air and time) and the people (they always come first!).

That said, there are many areas where we can improve using technology — and we are doing so. For example, we use state-of-the-art humidification systems and controls for our pilones, bales, and aging rooms. We also use ERP software to ensure reliable data and traceability, and 3D printers as a tool to innovate in packaging design.

CD: Your work at the company has taken Artista Cigars to new markets. How has that growth been, and what are the latest markets where the brand can be found?

RR: Once again, this is a goal achieved thanks to teamwork. Our newest market is small and very far away: Tahiti. It is the first country in Oceania to carry Artista!

CD: What new things will Artista Cigars surprise us with next?

RR: A lot of new things are coming. I’ve been relying more on our marketing and sales team while I focus on tobacco fermentation and developing new blends. At PCA, we will be introducing a new product — so stay tuned.

Radhamés ahora está más centrado en el proceso de fermentación del tabaco y en el desarrollo de nuevas mezclas // Ram is now more focused on tobacco fermentation and developing new blends
