Talk to Catherine Llibre is like make a fantastic trip to PROCIGAR past, present and future. She has 29 years working for the Association and she’s the visionary of the PROCIGAR Festival. In a pleasant conversation, she talks about this career at PROCIGAR, the Association events and their commitment with Social Programmes. We write a full exposition of our conversation, where she tells us, “I began with PROCIGAR in 1997, during the final years of the cigar boom. It was an incredible time to enter the tobacco industry. For a young woman starting her career, the cigar world felt vibrant, exciting, and full of opportunity. I had the chance to travel and meet fascinating people, and there were moments that felt almost surreal—like sitting at dinner with wellknown Hollywood actors. I even remember signing cigar boxes simply because I happened to be there with the PROCIGAR members. Those early experiences sparked what would become
a deep love for PROCIGAR and for the cigar industry. At the same time, I was hired as Corporate Assistant to Mr. Hendrik Kelner in Tabadom. Since he was serving as President of PROCIGAR at the time, this gave me a unique opportunity to become closely involved with the association. In those early days, PROCIGAR was quite literally run from my desk. I organized Board meetings, managed the accounting—which is funny to look back on because I’m not an accountant— and coordinated Procigar’s participation at the RTDA trade show, now known as PCA.
Looking back, those humble beginnings marked the start of a journey that has now spanned nearly three decades. What began as a small role supporting the association gradually grew into a lifelong commitment to PROCIGAR and its members. In addition to attending the annual trade show, we began organizing international dinners and events with retailers. I also supported Procigar’s position whenever
regulations or important industry topics needed to be addressed with government authorities.
In 2005, we began envisioning the idea of creating a cigar festival for the Dominican Republic. I knew Cuba had its own festival, and I mentioned to our members that if the Dominican Republic was the number one exporter of premium cigars in the world, our industry deserved an event of its own. We even visited a new hotel that was about to be inaugurated and planned to host the festival there. However, the hotel never opened, so we had to rethink everything. Eventually, in 2008, we decided to move forward by using several hotels and completely reorganizing the logistics.
That decision marked the beginning of a fantastic journey filled with learning experiences and innovation, including the creation of PROCIGAR Night in Santo Domingo and the expansion of PROCIGAR events into Europe.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable growth of
PROCIGAR firsthand— welcoming new active and associate members, expanding to include a dedicated team of full-time professionals, and ultimately establishing the association’s first official office under the leadership of current President, Mr. Litto Gómez. Another interesting fact is that PROCIGAR has never been my main job. However, without a doubt, it has always been my greatest passion. Today, I serve on the Executive Committee of PROCIGAR, overseeing the association’s corporate governance and working alongside a wonderful team to lead the PROCIGAR Festival and our social responsibility programs”, Catherine says.
CIGARRO DOMINICANO: As we can read, the PROCIGAR Festival is like “your baby”. How to you feel upon reaching its 18 years?
CATHERINE LLIBRE: The PROCIGAR Festival is definitely a part of me; I truly feel it is woven into my DNA. I feel incredibly proud and grateful for every festival we have held so far, especially

because year after year we receive feedback that each one was even better than the last.
That reality comes with a great responsibility and commitment, but it is exactly what motivates our team to keep raising the bar every single year. We no longer see mistakes in the organization—only lessons learned and opportunities to do even better the following year.
Reaching 18 years with yet another successful festival fills my soul with
joy, pride, and deep satisfaction.
CD: For you, as the creator of this great event, what was the most significant moment of the 2026 Festival?
CL: The fireworks at the White Dinner Party were something I had dreamed about for a long time, so seeing it finally come to life was very special. However, the most meaningful moment was seeing the results of the charity auction, which will support
the launch of the MAU initiative that will provide academic opportunities for young students.
CD: This year’s humidor auction was a huge success. Was the amount raised the highest in the auction’s history?
CL: For me, the auction is like the cherry on top of the event. We put tremendous effort into making everyone feel welcome and creating an unforgettable experience for every
attendee. Then comes the auction—a special moment where everyone has the opportunity to give back and support those who need it most.
This year we had very high expectations. The members of PROCIGAR donated spectacular, one-of-a-kind humidors for the cause. For the first time, the auction was held online and we even had a group of participants in Japan bidding live during the event. The result was truly extraordinary. We concluded the auction by raising a record-breaking amount of more than US$600,000.
CD: What does this achievement mean for PROCIGAR?
CL: This achievement opens the door to many more opportunities in the future. Starting with Japan has shown us that we can connect with supporters beyond our borders, and it encourages us to explore similar initiatives with other countries.
At the same time, it strengthens Procigar’s ability to expand and support even more social responsibility programs. Ultimately, it allows us to give back in a greater way and continue making a positive impact on our communities.
CD: Currently, PROCIGAR has expanded its social
initiatives. A few years now, it has run the “A Home for My Family” program. Tell us how this initiative came about and what impact it has.
CL: Procigar’s social responsibility efforts focus on supporting vulnerable groups, particularly ill children from lowincome families and older adults. Building on that commitment, we launched “A Home for My Family,” our first wholly PROCIGARowned program dedicated to providing safe, dignified housing for the company’s most deserving and disadvantaged employees. Each year we have the privilege of changing someone’s life by delivering a fully equipped new home. Beneficiaries are selected based on merit, need, length of service, and family circumstances—giving priority to employees who have elderly dependents or children living under the same roof.
CD: And the institution’s most recent project is MAU. What does it consist of and what does it mean to you?
CL: MAU is a program launched during the PROCIGAR Festival to provide university scholarships for children of employees with limited resources. MAU— Más Allá del Umbral, “Beyond the Threshold”— symbolizes crossing into
new opportunities and a brighter future.
For me, MAU is deeply personal. It was inspired by the loving memory of my son Mauricio, who was close to graduating and beginning college. I am profoundly grateful to PROCIGAR for allowing me to use his nickname and for helping transform our loss into a source of hope for others. Through this program, Mauricio’s spirit endures by opening doors for young people who dream of pursuing higher education. MAU is driven by love, gratitude, and purpose. It will uplift many children and give them the chance to cross their own threshold toward a better life
CD: How can people collaborate with the MAU project?
CL: Anyone interested in supporting the MAU project can make a donation through PROCIGAR. Contributions of any amount are welcome and will go directly toward helping a student complete their education. Donors may also choose to sponsor a specific level of support— such as funding a semester for a particular student or covering the cost of an entire university career for a young person in need. Every contribution helps open the door to opportunity and changes the course of a young person’s life through education.

Arnold André was founded in 1817 and is currently the largest cigar manufacturer in Germany. Johann Friedrich Christian André founded it in the German city of Bünde. From the beginning, Johann Friedrich committed to rigorous quality management and, somewhat unusually for the 19th century, to high social standards for employees and production facilities, almost revolutionary for the time. In 2011, Arnold André decided to establish one of the most modern cigar factories in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. It was a very wise decision, as it soon became clear that the local people, and especially the cigar rollers, possessed enormous knowledge of tobacco and impressive craftsmanship that allowed them to perfectly embody Arnold André’s high-quality standards.
CIGARRO DOMINICANO participated in the tour of its factory located in the Víctor Espaillat Mella industrial park, in Santiago. Upon arrival with the group of visitors, we were greeted with music and dances alluding to Carnival, along with its main executives: Thomas Strickrock, Hauke Luckow, and Philipp Schumacher.

Afterwards, we went to a hall where they explained everything about Arnold André in details, then proceeded to an extensive tour of the factory, which culminated in an exquisite lunch in their private Cigar Lounge, where we also enjoyed the excellence of their cigars and their Carlos André rum.

Ernesto PérezCarrillo and Jorge Luis Fernández
Maique welcomed the guests of the PROCIGAR 2026 Festival who arrived for a factory tour, but the most exciting moment was hearing the sound of the ‘chavetas’ by the cigar rollers welcoming us.
After explaining the name change from Tabacalera La Alianza to Casa Carrillo, as well as its history, trajectory and legacy, we walk into the factory for the guide tour.
Maique led the fantastic tour, covering every detail. He showed us the process of receiving the leaves, their storage, fumigation, the different processes for properly preserving them, the stripping, and finally, the cigar manufacturing and packaging.
After the tour, we moved on to a pairing of Dominican rum with their new PÉREZ-CARRILLO PLEDGE PURPLE cigar, ending the tour with an excellent typical Dominican meal.

The oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic offered a very different tour this year, visiting its tobacco fiedl in Jacagua and then the cigar factory, but in a different way: with a personalized cigarrolling experience.
La Aurora Cigars boasts a distinguished history as the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic, founded in 1903. At the age of 18, Eduardo León Jimenes founded the La Aurora cigar factory in Don Pedro, a community in Guazumal, in the province of Santiago de los Caballeros, with a small investment. The dream of creating a world-class handmade cigar brand began. Those first cigars, in the “Perfecto” format, are the double figurado cigars that are still produced today in very limited quantities, with only 100 units per day per artisan: the Preferidos. La Aurora would become the cornerstone of the largest business group in the Dominican Republic, the E. León Jimenes Group.
That morning, we visited two tobacco fields belonging to

La Aurora in Jacagua. At the first one, we were received by Guillermo León, president of La Aurora, accompanied by their main executives, Michelle Amelia and Daniela León, Iturbides Zaldivar, Ed McKenna, and others.
After the welcome, the agricultural engineer, Atanacio García, along with Miguel Contreras, showed us all the agricultural processes, the planting of Habano 92 and Corojo 99 variety tobacco, which are used especially for binder and filler, then moving on to an interesting talk about the tobacco leaf led by the master Manuel Inoa.
Then, we went to the factory for the extraordinary experience of making our own blend, rolling it and receiving our personalized cigar box.
The tour ended with a delicious lunch at Las Canas restaurant in the Tamboril Free Zone, during which we celebrated the birthday of Daniela León.

Thank you for your support
The tour to La Flor Dominicana began with a visit to their tobacco field in La Canela, where we started the morning enjoying their exquisite cigars and watching the exhibition of their majestic Paso Fino horses, followed by a welcome address from Litto Gómez, accompanied by his wife Inés and his sons Tony and Litto Daniel.
Later, guided by Litto, we walked through the plantation, seeing first-hand the different processes. We saw the carefully planted seeds growing under the warm Dominican sun, the harvesting of the tobacco leaves, and their careful drying in the curing barns, where they slowly dry and develop their rich character.
After a break, we went to the factory in Tamboril, where we enjoyed an exquisite meal prepared by Carlitos Pichardo with goat, lamb, beef and roast pork, and as every year, Litto was personally involved in its cooking.

During the tour of the factory, Litto Gómez shared anecdotes and stories from his career in the world of Dominican Premium Cigars, including his bold experiments and iconic creations.
Finally, we toured a new gallery where Tony had recreated all the members of LFD and Procigar as superheroes, in the Marvel style, which was very fun and a playful and creative tribute to the personalities that make up the Dominican tobacco industry, feeling that in addition to craftsmanship, tradition and respect for values there is also friendship, humor and a deep sense of community among those who dedicate their lives to the production of the best Premium Cigars in the World.

Tabacalera Palma Celebrates 90 Years!
The origins of Palma tobacco date back to the mid-19th century, when a Spaniard named José Manuel Blanco Lozada moved to the Dominican Republic and dedicated himself to the trade of tropical fruits and tobacco. His son, José Arnaldo Blanco I, took the initiative to cultivate tobacco and had a son, named José Arnaldo II, who married Irene Domínguez, a hardworking woman who became actively involved in the business. They both devoted all their efforts to the trade of cacao, fruits, meats, and, of course, tobacco.
José Arnaldo Blanco II founded Tabacalera Palma in 1925 and applied for industrial registration in 1936, becoming one of the first cigar manufacturers in the Dominican Republic.

90 years of passion, tradition, and Dominican tobacco. During the Festival tour, first we visited the Jacagua Farm where after having breakfast, with sancocho, cativias and
coconut, we toured the farm with José Manuel Blanco, who also directed the tour in an extraordinary way, of course with the collaboration of his father, Jochy Blanco.
Then we moved to Tamboril, where the new, modern factory is located, right next to the old

facilities. There we received a warm welcome, complete with distinctly Dominican elements. José Manuel continued the tour, and after visiting the factory, we enjoyed a delicious lunch, a musical performance, and spent the afternoon savoring exquisite La Galera cigars.

The Dominican president, Luis Abinader, inaugurated the 18th PROCIGAR 2026 Festival, the most important international platform for the Dominican Republic’s premium cigar industry. The festival brings together producers, master blenders, distributors and aficionados from more than 40 countries, solidifying the global positioning of Dominican tobacco and its impact on the national economy.
During the opening ceremony, PROCIGAR’ President, Litto Gómez, thanked the president for his presence and emphasized the expansive growth the industry has experienced with the government support. Litto Gómez, cofounder of La Flor Dominicana, was elected president of the Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers (PROCIGAR) in June 2024, an organization that represents the country’s
leading premium cigar manufacturers.
The festival, organized by PROCIGAR, is an exclusive experience that combines an intimate look at the art of cigar making, entertainment, and a wide selection of premium cigars. Through this platform, PROCIGAR continues to promote the Dominican cigar industry and strengthen its international standing.
The Welcome Dinner officially kicked off the festival’s social program and, this year, was inspired by cacao, which served as the central theme throughout the experience, reflected in the culinary offerings, desserts, liqueurs and ambiance. In a carefully designed setting, the evening symbolized the reunion of cigar aficionados who gather annually in Santiago de los Caballeros, as well as a welcome to newcomers.

During these days, participants take part in a circuit of simultaneous visits to tobacco factories and fields in the region, where they learn firsthand about the process that transforms the leaf into exceptional cigars. The agenda also includes cultural experiences and tours that highlight the attractions of the Dominican Republic, connecting tradition, tourism, and industry. Each day culminates in a grand dinner where approximately one thousand national and international guests celebrate the quality of Dominican tobacco.
With this opening, the PROCIGAR 2026 Festival reaffirms its international reach and consolidates the Dominican Republic as a global leader in the production of premium cigars.

The “Iconic Night,” celebrated for the past 17 years, the White Night, or rather the White Dinner Party, where more than 1,000 guests gather to celebrate (at the foot of the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, in the only activity permitted at this location) the prestige, quality, and global standing of Dominican cigars, their soul, tradition, culture, and grandeur, and above all, the passion that unites us.
All dressed in white: ladies in elegant white gowns reflecting a wide range of styles; gentlemen in white guayaberas or simply elegant white suits. Elegance without rigidity and a carefully curated aesthetic, a balance between formality and genuine enjoyment. Because on this iconic night, white becomes a symbol of unity, respect for the event, and a sense of belonging. You see hundreds of people dressed in white, yet this doesn’t prevent others from adding their own unique style, sending a clear message: “We are all different, but we share the same passion: our Premium Dominican Cigars.”
All of this—music, gastronomy, drinks, memorable conversations—is set against the backdrop of Premium Dominican Cigars, unique in the world, whose smoke creates striking contrasts in the Santiago night.
