HISTORY OF THE

FACULTY

Dr. Vach Yamprayoon (Luang Vach Vidyavaddhana) visited His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol in Boston. His Highness, who showed great interest in the dental health of the Thai people, and planned to donate one million baht of his own personal money to start the dental faculty. Unfortunately, His Majesty died on September 24th, 1929. It can be said that His Majesty was the first person in Thailand to see the importance of dentistry.

1926

Our History

In 1928, Dr. Vach proposed the idea of establishing a dental school in Thailand to Prof. Aj Ellis, Dean of Medicine, but failed due to the lack of budget. In the year 1936, he was contacted by Col. Luang Phibunsongkhram (Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram), who approved his proposal. By Her Royal Highness Princess Chulalongkorn approved the sum of 7,000 baht for a dental treatment building to be built at the 1st Army County Sheriff’s Division. Later in the year 1938, Dr. Sirisinha visited Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra and asked that she would sponsor the dental school that was to be established. In the year 1939 Colonel Luang Vach Vidyavaddhana consulted with Mr. Sukich Nimmanheminda, Secretary-General of Chulalongkorn University, to help plan and establish the Department of Dentistry

1928 to 1939

1940

On May 16th, 1940, Major General Luang Phibunsongkhram, the President of Chulalongkorn University, announced the establishment of the Dentistry Department as an independent department in Chulalongkorn University, and appointed Colonel Luang Vach Vidyavaddhana to serve as the Head of the Department of Dentistry.Lt. Col. Si Sirisinha was invited to be a special teacher.

Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram ordered the transfer of Chulalongkorn University’s affairs relating to public health, namely Faculty of Medicine and Siriraj Hospital Department of Dentistry, Pharmacy Department and the Department of Veterinary Medicine to be part of the Department of Medicine and the Ministry of Health.

1942

Due to continuous success of Mahidol University’s Faculty of Dentistry, a second faculty was established under the name of the Phayathai Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University.

1968

1972

1965

University of Medicine made a lot of improvement and became a complete university, leading to the establishment being renamed the Mahidol University. The Faculty of Dentistry was then part of Mahidol University.

The Faculty of Dentistry was transferred back to Chulalongkorn University because the location was inside Chulalongkorn’s property. The students of the new faculty were referred to as Nisit of the Faculty of Dentistry. The Phayathai branch of the Faculty of Dentistry remains under Mahidol University as before. As a result, Thailand has two faculties of dentistry at that time.

An Interview with a Distinguished Researcher

Associate Dean for Research and Innovation Director, Center of Excellence in Genomics and Precision Dentistry Vice President, Thai Society of Human Genetics Research Director, Chulalongkorn University Implant and Esthetic Dentistry Program (CUIE) Secretary, Geriatric Dentistry and Special Patients Care Program

Q1

What initially inspired you to pursue a career in research, and what continues to motivate you today?

Answer:

My journey into research was ignited during my clinical training in Pediatric Dentistry and my subsequent PhD at King’s College London as well as my training in Prosthodontics at Chulalongkorn University. As a clinician, I realized that while we were excellent at treating the symptoms of dental anomalies, we often lacked the biological answers as to why they occurred, particularly in patients with rare genetic disorders. I was driven to move beyond traditional treatment and decode the molecular and genetic roots of these conditions.

Today, I am motivated by the transformative paradigm shift toward Precision Medicine/Dentistry and Digital Health. It is incredibly rewarding to see how our work in Genomics—identifying specific genetic variants for conditions like Amelogenesis Imperfecta or Osteogenesis Imperfecta —directly helps undiagnosed families find answers. Furthermore, the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence into dental diagnostics, a key focus of my current grants, drives me to push the boundaries of technology to improve diagnostic speed, accuracy, and equity for Thai patients.

Q2

Which of your research works are you most proud of, and why does it hold special meaning for you?

Answer:

I am most proud of establishing the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and Digital Health and leading the research under the “Genomics for Thai People with Oro-dental Disability” project.

This work holds special meaning because it bridges the crucial gap between basic science and human compassion. By utilizing advanced Whole Exome and Genome Sequencing, we have successfully identified

Research has the power to transform dentistry from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to tailored, precise therapy. In my view, the greatest value of research lies in its ability to solve complex, systemic problems that clinical practice alone cannot address.

novel genetic variants (such as in FAM20A, IDH1, and DSPP) in Thai families who had previously gone years without a clear diagnosis. This research does more than contribute to the global scientific community through high-impact publications; it provides closure and enables tailored management plans for our patients. To me, this represents the true essence of translational research: moving “from bench to bedside” to improve lives.

Q3

In your view, how can research contribute value and create a positive impact on society or the profession?

Answer:

Research has the power to transform dentistry from a “onesize-fits-all” approach to tailored, precise therapy. In my view, the greatest value of research lies in its ability to solve complex, systemic problems that clinical practice alone cannot address.

For the profession, integrating Omics and AI elevates our standard of care, allowing us to predict risks and intervene earlier than ever before. For society, research drives policy and ensures safety. For instance, my involvement with the National Research Council of Thailand and the FDA regarding medical devices ensures that scientific discoveries translate into safe, accessible innovations for the public. By understanding the genetic basis of oral diseases, we are not just treating individuals; we are creating diagnostic tools and standards that uplift the quality of life for the entire population.

Q4

What has been the most significant challenge in your research journey, and how did you overcome or learn from it?

Answer:

The most significant challenge has been bridging the diverse disciplines required for modern research, connecting the logic of clinical dentistry with the complexities of molecular biology, bioinformatics, and now, artificial intelligence. Early in my career, the hurdle was managing the sheer volume of data and the technical intricacies of genetic sequencing.

To embrace an interdisciplinary mindset and a global perspective. Do not view dentistry as limited to the oral cavity; look at how it intersects with systemic health, genetics, and technology.

I overcame this through collaboration and continuous learning. I realized early on that impactful research cannot be done in isolation. I actively cultivated a global network, fostering partnerships with institutions in the UK, Australia, Korea, Japan, and the USA. Learning to lead multidisciplinary teams and stepping out of my comfort zone to master fields like AI and innovative product development have taught me that resilience, adaptability, and teamwork are just as vital to success as technical expertise.

Q5

What advice or insights would you like to share with students and early-career researchers who aspire to pursue research?

Answer:

My advice is to embrace an interdisciplinary mindset and a global perspective. Do not view dentistry as limited to the oral cavity; look at how it intersects with systemic health, genetics, and technology.

To the students: be curious and do not fear the “unknowns” in science. The future of our profession lies in Precision Medicine and Digital Health. Seek out mentorship, apply for international exchanges, and immerse yourself in environments that challenge you. Research is a marathon, not a sprint—it requires patience, ethical integrity, and a genuine desire to make a difference. If you focus on creating real value for the patient, the recognition and success will naturally follow.

Research and Innovation

THE ORAL SENTINEL:

A New Narrative for Global Health

The Research Chronicle of the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University (2025)

For over a century, the field of dentistry was defined by the reactive: the filling of a cavity, the extraction of a tooth, the fitting of a bridge. But within the walls of the Faculty of Dentistry at Chulalongkorn University, a profound shift has occurred. The school has evolved from a center of clinical skill into a global engine of Precision Medicine.

Today, the faculty views the human mouth not as an isolated compartment, but as a highfidelity sensor for the entire body: a biological “sentinel” that holds the secrets to systemic health, genetic mysteries, and the future of regenerative science.

I. The

Digital Renaissance: When Algorithms Meet the Scalpel

The story of Chula’s research begins at the intersection of human artistry and machine intelligence. The faculty has established itself as the global authority on Computer-Assisted Implant Surgery (CAIS). In the past two years, Chula’s research teams in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Chulalongkorn Implant and Esthetic Dentistry (CUIE) International Program have published a series of landmark papers that have fundamentally redefined the “gold standard” for dental implants.

In the faculty’s surgical suites, the era of “freehand” surgery is being replaced by a sophisticated digital ecosystem. Through a combination of Static Guides and Dynamic Navigation , the school has proven that the margin of error in dental implants can be reduced to mere fractions of a millimeter. But Chula’s vision is broader than just accuracy; it is about the Implant Supracrestal Complex (ISC) . By studying the living interface where titanium meets human tissue, the faculty is designing restorations that do not just fit—they thrive, preventing bone loss and promoting long-term biological harmony.

Parallel to this, the school’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives are trans-

forming diagnostics. Deep learning models developed at Chula can now identify dental restorations on panoramic radiographs. From the automated detection of elusive MB2 canals in complex root systems to AI-assisted classification of Oral Lichen Planus, the faculty is giving clinicians a “digital second opinion” that reduces diagnosis time while increasing life-saving precision.

II. The Genetic Discovery: Solving complex diseases

While the digital labs focus on the present, the Center of Excellence in Precision Medicine and Digital Health at Chulalongkorn is looking into the past, specifically, the code of life itself. The faculty has become a global lighthouse for the study of craniofacial disorders.

One of the most significant chapters in this story is the faculty’s work on Skeletal Dysplasia, Amelogenesis Imperfecta and Dentinogenesis Imperfecta . By utilizing Exome and Genome Sequencing, Chula researchers have identified novel variants in genes like FAM20A and DSPP . These discoveries are not just academic exercises; they are clinical lifelines. For instance, the school’s research revealed that certain genetic dental anomalies are actually early biological warning signs for systemic risks, such as colorectal cancer linked to the AXIN2 gene.

The crowning achievement of this genetic mission is the Thai Reference Exome (T-REx). By mapping the genetic signatures of the Thai population, Chulalongkorn has created a master library that ensures Southeast Asian patients are no longer invisible in the world of genomic medicine. This database

allows for the development of “tailored” therapies that are safer and more effective for millions of people across the region.

III. Alchemy in the Pulp: The Living Bio-Factory

Perhaps the most “story-like” aspect of Chula’s research is the work being done within the Center of Excellence for Dental Stem Cell Biology. Here, researchers are performing a modern form of alchemy: turning discarded teeth into life-saving medicine.

The school has pioneered a unique understanding of Mechanical Force Most people think of chewing as a simple mechanical act, but Chula research has proven it is a biological command. By studying Intermittent Compressive Force (ICF) , the faculty discovered that the rhythmic pressure of chewing “primes” dental stem cells, making them more resilient to inflammation and more efficient at rebuilding bone.

The Blueprint of Tooth Development

Beyond stem cell priming, we are decoding the molecular blueprint of the tooth itself. In a recent breakthrough study regarding embryonic pattern formation, our team investigated the regional specification of lingual versus buccal dental mesenchyme.

Using RNA sequencing and lineage tracing in mouse models, we discovered that “position is destiny.” We found that odontogenesis (tooth formation) genes are enriched in the lingual mesenchyme, while the buccal mesenchyme primarily supports surrounding tissues. When transplanted, only the lingual mesenchyme possessed the potential to form teeth. This critical finding provides novel insights into the molecular basis

of positional information—knowledge that brings us one step closer to bioengineering viable teeth in the lab.

IV. The Microbial Jungle: Mapping the Inner Universe

Our research also zooms into the microscopic world of the Oral Microbiome Using high-resolution Shotgun Metagenomics, Chula is mapping the “Inner Universe” of the mouth to understand its links to systemic physiology.

Longitudinal studies at the Facul ty have identified unique microbial “fingerprints” for conditions previously misunderstood. We have characterized specific shifts in Prevotella and Fusobacterium populations during the progression of Peri-implantitis. Furthermore, we discovered that the plaque microbiome in patients with Behçet’s Disease or Severe Fluorosis contains distinct functional signatures, serving as potential non-invasive biomarkers for early disease detection.

V. The Global Burden: A Network for Health and Medicine

The Faculty’s influence now extends to the absolute highest tier of medical literature. As a primary contributor to the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, Chulalongkorn University has secured its place on the world stage with research published in The Lancet, The Lancet Public Health, and The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

These publications connect our cellular and clinical findings to the “Global Pulse.” By tracking the intersections of oral health, infectious disease control, and systemic well-being across the ASEAN region and beyond, the Faculty is providing the peer-reviewed data needed to prove that a healthy mouth is the cornerstone of a healthy society.

EPILOGUE: The Chula Legacy

The Faculty of Dentistry at Chulalongkorn University is no longer just teaching the next generation of dentists; it is defining the next generation of Health Science

From the development of the International ITI Glossary for digital surgery to the creation of 3D-printed hybrid bone-cartilage complexes, the school is proving that the most innovative solutions to the world’s health problems can often be found right under our noses. This is more than a research institution; it is a global hub where the digital, the genetic, and the cellular converge to create a healthier, more precise future for all.
