As we reach the end of another successful and memorable year at CHS South, I am delighted to reflect on the many achievements, experiences and milestones that have made this year such a special one for our school community. First and foremost, I would like to thank our students, families, staff and wider community for their continued support, commitment and ambition. Together, we have continued to build a school community where every young person feels known, valued and supported to be Creative, Happy and Successful, with opportunities to discover their strengths, develop their confidence and achieve their goals. This year has provided many reasons to celebrate. We were particularly proud to receive national recognition from the Secretary of State for Education for the exceptional progress and outcomes achieved by our pupils in receipt of the Pupil Premium, reflecting our commitment to ensuring that every young person at CHS South has the opportunity to succeed and achieve their full potential. We were also delighted to be recognised nationally for attendance, placing among the top-performing schools in the country, reflecting the strong culture, positive relationships and sense of belonging that underpin daily life at CHS South. We have also been awarded the One Education Secondary Reading Award - Gold, recognising our dedication to developing a vibrant culture of reading, alongside prestigious accolades including the Artsmark Gold Award, the Rainbow Flag Award and the afPE Quality Mark with Distinction for excellence in physical education and school sport. These achievements reflect the passion, expertise and commitment of our staff, together with the enthusiasm, resilience and determination shown by our students every day. Beyond the classroom, CHS South has continued to provide an exceptional range of opportunities designed to enrich young people’s lives and broaden their horizons. From outstanding performances, including our production of Annie Jr., to educational visits, leadership opportunities, careers experiences, sporting success and a wide variety of clubs and enrichment activities, there has been something for every student to discover and enjoy. I am particularly proud of the historic success of our basketball teams, whose achievements have seen CHS South compete on the regional and national stage, demonstrating the ambition and determination that characterise our school. As you read through this edition of Spotlight on South, I hope you enjoy celebrating the many experiences, accomplishments and memorable moments that have shaped our year. Every page reflects the talent, creativity, kindness and ambition that make CHS South such a special place to learn, grow and succeed. It is also a reminder that education extends far beyond the classroom, helping young people develop the confidence, character and skills they need for life. What continues to impress me most is not simply what our students achieve, but the kindness, respect and determination they demonstrate every day in supporting one another and contributing positively to our school community. Our Year 11 students deserve special recognition as they complete their journey with us. They have approached their final year with maturity, resilience and determination, serving as excellent role models for our younger students. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved and look forward to seeing the successes that undoubtedly lie ahead. They will always remain an important part of the CHS South family. For those families who may be discovering CHS South for the first time, I hope this magazine offers a genuine insight into life at our school. From academic achievement and exceptional pastoral care to sport, the arts, leadership opportunities and enrichment experiences, we are proud to provide an education that develops the whole child. Our vision is simple: to ensure every student is Creative, Happy and Successful, and equipped with the knowledge, character and confidence to thrive in the future. SPOTLIGHT ON LANGUAGES
SUNSHINE, SMILES AND SPANISH ADVENTURES IN BARCELONA From 21st–24th June, a group of students and staff enjoyed an unforgettable four-day trip to the vibrant city of Barcelona. Filled with sunshine, culture, adventure and fantastic food, the visit provided countless opportunities for students to immerse themselves in Spanish life while creating memories that will last a lifetime. Our adventure began on the first day with our journey to Barcelona. After arriving and settling into our hostel, students had the opportunity to explore their new surroundings before enjoying a traditional tapas evening in a local restaurant. Sampling a range of Spanish dishes was the perfect way to begin the trip and gave everyone an authentic taste of Catalan culture.
Day two was dedicated to thrills, excitement and teamwork at PortAventura World. Students threw themselves into the experience, taking on some of Europe’s most exciting rollercoasters and enjoying the park’s many attractions. The water rides proved especially popular, offering a welcome way to cool off in the glorious Spanish sunshine. It was a day full of laughter, excitement and plenty of adrenaline-fuelled memories. And what a better way to finish the day that two staff winning a giant Groot to bring back with us!

Our third day combined relaxation, culture and hands-on learning. The morning began on the beach, where students enjoyed the Mediterranean atmosphere and some well-earned downtime. We also had the opportunity to visit the Picasso Museum, learning more about one of Spain’s most influential artists, before visiting the breathtaking Sagrada Família, whose extraordinary architecture left everyone amazed. The day concluded with a fantastic paella cooking workshop at Poble Espanyol, where students worked together to prepare one of Spain’s most famous dishes. As if the day could not get any better, that evening students cheered on the England football team. Judging by the result, we are convinced our support brought them a little extra luck! On our final day, we travelled to Montjuïc Castle, where stunning panoramic views across Barcelona provided a spectacular farewell to the city. After taking in the sights and capturing some final photographs, we made our way to the airport, tired but full of wonderful memories from an incredible trip.
A huge thank you goes to all the staff who dedicated their time, energy and enthusiasm to making the visit such a success. Most importantly, congratulations to our students, who were outstanding ambassadors for the school throughout. They embraced every opportunity with curiosity, maturity and enthusiasm, demonstrating excellent behaviour at all times and making us immensely proud. The Barcelona trip was a fantastic experience for everyone involved and one that will be remembered for many years to come.
SPOTLIGHT ON CREATIVITY EXPLORING NEW WORLDS THROUGH THE ARTS
Our students have continued to enjoy a wide range of creative opportunities this term, from visits and performances to workshops and experiences that broaden their understanding of the arts. Through Drama, Dance, and Music, students have continued to develop confidence, creativity and collaboration - essential qualities that help them become successful both inside and outside the classroom.
DRAMA STUDENTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE Our Year 9 Drama Elective students delivered outstanding performances of scenes from Blood Brothers, showcasing their acting, singing and teamwork skills. Students demonstrated impressive confidence and professionalism throughout their performances, bringing characters to life and showing the creativity and commitment they have developed through Drama. The performances were a fantastic celebration of their hard work and a brilliant example of the talent within our school community.
BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE BLACKPOOL DUNGEONS Our Year 9 and Year 10 Drama Elective students enjoyed a memorable visit to the Blackpool Dungeons, experiencing the unique storytelling, atmosphere and live performances that make the attraction so distinctive. Inspired by their visit, students created their own dungeon experiences, developing original ideas, writing performances and working collaboratively to bring their concepts to life. The creativity and confidence shown by students was fantastic - with some performances even managing to scare Mrs Wahed! A brilliant example of how experiences outside the classroom can inspire creativity and develop performance skills.
BEHIND THE SCENES AT SPIRIT STUDIOS Our Year 9 and Year 10 Music students enjoyed an inspiring visit to Spirit Studios, where they experienced life at one of Manchester’s leading music colleges. Throughout the day, students explored the wide range of creative courses on offer, from Music Production and Live Sound Engineering to Sound Design and Effects. They were also treated to a tour of the iconic studios, learning about the building’s rich musical heritage, including its links to legendary bands such as The Stone Roses and The Smiths. The visit concluded with a hands-on workshop in Spirit Studios’ state-of-the-art recording facilities, where students experimented with music production techniques, showcased their creativity and went head-to-head in an exciting composition challenge. The experience gave students a fantastic insight into the many career pathways within the music industry while inspiring the next generation of musicians, producers and sound engineers.
ALADDIN AUDITIONS BRING MAGIC TO CHS SOUTH Excitement is already building for our next school production of Aladdin, following an incredible turnout at auditions. With 85 students taking part, the standard was so high that the Performing Arts team decided to create two casts for this year’s December performances.
The dedication, confidence and talent shown by students during auditions was exceptional, and we cannot wait to see them bring the magic of Aladdin to life later this year.
CELEBRATING UNITY THROUGH MOVEMENT For the fourth year running, CHS South took part in Salford Dance Explosion, showcasing the creativity and talent of our dancers. This year’s performance explored the idea of different dance styles coming together - initially competing to prove their value, before discovering that each style brings something unique and powerful. Through movement and performance, students explored themes of community, collaboration and respect, demonstrating that true strength comes from working together. A fantastic performance that perfectly captured the power of creativity and connection.
YEAR 10 STUDENTS EXPERIENCE THEATRE AT THE ROYAL EXCHANGE Our Year 10 Drama students enjoyed a visit to the Royal Exchange Theatre to watch Even These Things. The production gave students the opportunity to experience contemporary theatre, explore different performance styles and gain inspiration for their own practical Drama work. Visits like this provide valuable opportunities for students to see professional theatre in action and understand the possibilities available within the creative industries.

At CHS South, we believe that every student should feel seen, valued and part of our community. Creating a genuine sense of belonging is at the heart of everything we do, ensuring every young person has the confidence, support and opportunities to flourish. Throughout the year, students have celebrated their achievements through Champion Assemblies, rewards trips and special events, while also taking part in wellbeing initiatives, workshops and enrichment opportunities that help them grow both personally and socially. We were especially pleased to recognise our Young Carers with a celebration breakfast and a trip to HOME Manchester, acknowledging the incredible compassion and responsibility they show every day. Whether celebrating milestones such as Prom and Awards Evening, supporting students through everyday challenges or creating opportunities for everyone to get involved, these experiences reflect what makes CHS South so special- a school where everyone is welcomed, encouraged and empowered to succeed together.
CELEBRATING OUR YEAR 11 PROM Our Year 11 Prom at Hotel Football was an unforgettable evening, giving students the perfect opportunity to celebrate the end of their journey at CHS South. Students arrived dressed to impress, making a spectacular entrance before enjoying welcome drinks, catching up with friends and beginning an evening full of celebration. One of the highlights was the Prom Awards, where students and staff were recognised through a range of fun and memorable awards. The celebrations continued throughout the evening, with the dance floor full as students created memories with their friends. We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 11 students represented themselves throughout the event. Their maturity, kindness and positive attitude made the evening a fantastic celebration of everything they have achieved.
RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE AT THE CHS SOUTH AWARDS EVENING Our CHS South Awards Evening was once again a truly memorable occasion, bringing together students, families, staff and governors to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our school community. The evening was filled with pride, excitement and celebration as we recognised the dedication, resilience and success of students across every year group. Throughout the ceremony, students were recognised for a wide range of achievements, from exceptional academic attainment and progress to outstanding commitment, leadership, creativity, sporting success and contributions to school life. Every award reflected not only excellence, but also the values of determination, kindness and ambition that make our students so special. The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of genuine celebration. Families watched with pride as students took to the stage to receive their awards, each greeted with enthusiastic applause from friends, staff and loved ones. Our fantastic student performers entertained the audience with an array of musical and dance performances, adding energy and excitement to an already unforgettable evening. One of the most heart-warming aspects of the celebration was the support students showed for one another. Every name announced was met with cheers and encouragement, creating a wonderful sense of community and reminding everyone that success is something to be celebrated together. In his closing remarks, Headteacher Mr Prophet reflected: “Awards Evening is one of the highlights of the school year. It gives us the opportunity to celebrate not only outstanding achievement, but also the resilience, kindness, determination and character that our students demonstrate every day. Seeing students recognised alongside the families and staff who have supported them is always a proud moment for our whole school community.” A huge thank you goes to everyone who helped make the evening such a success; from the staff who organised the event and presented awards to the student performers who showcased the incredible talent within our school. CHS SOUTH AWARDED RAINBOW FLAG AWARD CHS South is proud to announce that we have been awarded the Rainbow Flag Award, a nationally recognised framework that celebrates and strengthens LGBTQ+ inclusion in schools and organisations across the UK. The Rainbow Flag Award is delivered in partnership with local LGBTQ+ youth organisations, ensuring training and support is rooted in lived experiences and reflects the needs of local communities. It promotes a whole-organisation approach to inclusion and supports schools in actively challenging homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, while improving outcomes for LGBTQ+ young people, students from LGBTQ+ families, and LGBTQ+ staff. Achieving the award reflects CHS South’s ongoing commitment to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment across all aspects of school life. PRIDE ON THE RANGE 2026 A group of CHS South students enjoyed a fantastic day at Pride on the Range, celebrating inclusion, equality and community. The event was filled with colour, creativity and celebration, giving students the opportunity to come together and recognise the importance of diversity and belonging. A special mention goes to one of our Year 11 students who performed a powerful and emotional poem on the main stage, supported by their peers in the audience. It was a brilliant celebration of student voice and the strength of our inclusive community.

FUTURE LEADERS AT THE MAYORAL HUSTINGS Our Head Students from Years 7–9 had the exciting opportunity to attend the Greater Manchester Mayoral Hustings at Chetham’s School of Music, where they observed candidates discussing the issues and priorities that matter most to our region. The visit gave students a valuable insight into democracy in action, allowing them to hear first-hand how political leaders present their ideas and respond to important questions. It also encouraged students to think critically about leadership, public service and the impact of local decision-making.
OVER 120 STUDENT ACHIEVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION We are incredibly proud to celebrate the success of our students following this year’s SSAT Student Leadership awards. An outstanding 123 CHS South students achieved national recognition, with 115 students awarded Bronze and 8 students achieving Silver accreditation. The awards recognise students who demonstrate leadership, teamwork, reflection and a commitment to making a positive contribution to school life. External moderators praised the high quality of students’ portfolios, highlighting their resilience, creativity, independence and willingness to learn from feedback. Silver award recipients were also recognised for the wider impact of their leadership and the positive difference they made to others. This fantastic achievement reflects the ambition, compassion and determination of our students, and the strong culture of leadership we continue to foster at CHS South. Congratulations to all 123 students on this outstanding accomplishment - we are incredibly proud of every one of you.

YEAR 7 SHINE IN JR NBA COMPETITION Our Year 7 Jr NBA team enjoyed a fantastic run in this year’s competition, demonstrating impressive skill, teamwork and determination throughout.

The team remained unbeaten during the group stages, producing a series of outstanding performances to secure their place in the playoffs. After battling through some tough fixtures, their journey came to an end with a narrow defeat in the semi-finals against strong opposition.

Although they finished just short of the final, the team should be incredibly proud of everything they achieved. Their resilience, sportsmanship and commitment throughout the competition were exemplary, and they represented CHS South with pride from start to finish.

BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE IN THE HEART OF LONDON A group of Year 10 students travelled to Trafalgar Square to compete in an exciting NBA 3x3 Basketball Tournament, enjoying an unforgettable experience at one of London’s most iconic locations. Representing CHS South with pride, the team played some excellent basketball, securing an impressive victory and narrowly missing out in a second closely contested game against strong opposition. Away from the court, students soaked up the atmosphere of the NBA-hosted event, meeting wellknown basketball personalities and content creators while experiencing the excitement of a major sporting occasion. Throughout the trip, the students were outstanding ambassadors for CHS South, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship, enthusiasm and behaviour. It was a memorable day that combined competitive sport with an unforgettable experience beyond the game.
A HISTORIC SEASON FOR CHS SOUTH BASKETBALL CHS South is celebrating an incredible sporting achievement after both our U16A and U16B basketball teams were crowned Manchester Champions for the 2025–2026 season. Our current Year 11 basketball squad has enjoyed a remarkable journey, maintaining an unbeaten run stretching back to Year 10. Throughout the season, the teams competed against some of the strongest schools across the city, demonstrating skill, determination and outstanding teamwork. Their route to the title saw them secure impressive victories against: Trinity, St. Bede’s,Wright Robinson College, St. Paul’s, Loreto High School, Reddish Vale High School, Stockport Academy, Cheadle Hulme, St. Matthew’s, Manchester Communication Academy, Co-op Academy The success continued beyond the Manchester League, with our U16A team representing CHS South in the Dynamic National English Schools
Competition. After winning the North Zone Championship and competing against schools across Greater Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool and Wolverhampton, the team progressed to the National semi-final stage. Although the fixture in Northampton was unable to be completed due to a broken basketball rim, the team’s performances throughout the competition showed they were more than capable of competing for the national title. This achievement represents a historic milestone for CHS South. The U16 squads have secured the school’s third Manchester League title, winning both divisions in the same season, while also achieving our first national-level sporting success. A huge congratulations to all students and staff involved. Your commitment, resilience and teamwork have made the whole CHS South community incredibly proud.

SPOTLIGHT ON STEM EXPLORING, CREATING AND INNOVATING Science, Technology, English and Maths Highlights
EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE AT JODRELL BANK Our Year 9 and Year 10 scientists enjoyed an exciting visit to Jodrell Bank Observatory, discovering how researchers use giant radio telescopes to explore the mysteries of space. Students explored interactive exhibitions, learned about the science behind astronomy and experienced an immersive Space Dome show, bringing the wonders of the universe to life.
Adding to the excitement, students embraced a special challenge by dressing as spies for the day, bringing creativity and enthusiasm to the experience. Despite the rainy weather, the trip was a huge success, with students returning full of new knowledge, curiosity and inspiration. The visit was a fantastic opportunity for students to see how the science they study in the classroom connects to real-world discoveries.

CELEBRATING CURIOSITY AND COMMITMENT Throughout the year, our Science Club students have demonstrated incredible enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment - and we were delighted to recognise their achievements with our Science Club awards. Students who attended Science Club throughout the entire year received a Gold Award, while those who showed excellent commitment by attending the majority of sessions achieved a Silver Award. Congratulations to all of our award winners. Your dedication, willingness to explore new ideas and passion for science have been fantastic to see.
BBC WORKSHOP: STAYING SAFE ONLINE Year 9 Students took part in an engaging BBC workshop exploring online safety, misinformation and how to spot fake news on social media. Led by the BBC team from Salford, the session encouraged students to discuss online experiences, learn practical strategies for staying safe and explore how to create a more positive digital world. The team were incredibly impressed by our students’ thoughtful contributions, sharing that they had gained valuable insights to help shape future BBC content. A fantastic example of our students using their voices to make a difference.
BRINGING FRANKENSTEIN TO LIFE AT CENTRAL LIBRARY Our students enjoyed a creative visit to Central Library, where they explored the world of illustration and storytelling. Students worked alongside illustrator Ian, learning more about the creative process behind bringing stories to life through artwork. They developed their own sketches and created stories inspired by Frankenstein, while discovering more about the skills and imagination needed for a career in illustration. The visit gave students the opportunity to ask questions, explore a creative career pathway and develop their own storytelling skills.
BUILDING THE FUTURE: YEAR 10 ENGINEERS TAKE ON ROBOTICS CHALLENGE A team of six talented Year 10 students have been putting their engineering skills to the test as they design and build a robot for the University of Manchester’s Minesweeper III competition. The students have been working collaboratively to develop their robot design, combining mathematical thinking, problem-solving and programming skills to bring their creation to life. With the build underway and programming in progress, the team will compete in the competition in July. We wish them the very best of luck - we can’t wait to see what they achieve!

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN IN TECH Thirty Year 8 students recently attended the Girls Tech Event, organised by Ahead Partnership at the Greater Manchester Digital Security Hub (DiSH) in Manchester. The inspiring event introduced students to a range of female role models from diverse backgrounds who have built successful careers in the digital and technology sector. Throughout the day, students took part in interactive workshops led by industry experts, exploring topics including game design and the use of assistive technology to improve people’s everyday lives.
Students also enjoyed a keynote presentation and panel discussion featuring women working across a variety of technology careers, giving them the opportunity to ask questions, hear first-hand experiences and discover the many pathways into the industry. The visit provided a fantastic insight into the exciting world of technology, encouraging students to broaden their aspirations, challenge stereotypes and consider the many opportunities available within this fast-growing sector.
SPOTLIGHT ON THE FUTURE HELPING EVERY STUDENT DISCOVER THEIR NEXT STEP. DISCOVERING UNIVERSITY LIFE AT UA92 Our Year 10 students enjoyed an inspiring visit to UA92, where they spent several days experiencing life on a university campus and exploring the exciting opportunities available in higher education. During the visit, students toured the campus, discovered the wide range of courses on offer and took part in sessions linked to their History GCSE, helping to strengthen their knowledge as they prepare to begin their final year of study. The experience provided valuable insight into university life while encouraging students to think about their future aspirations and the many pathways available beyond school.
YEAR 10 EXPERIENCE COLLEGE LIFE Year 10 students enjoyed a fantastic taster day at Xaverian College, experiencing life as a college student. Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of subject taster sessions, explored new areas of study and gained a better understanding of post-16 education. They also discovered the wide range of clubs and opportunities available beyond the classroom. The visit gave students a valuable insight into their future options and encouraged them to start thinking about the exciting opportunities ahead.
BUILDING FUTURES IN REAL ESTATE Our Year 9 students took part in the Build Your Future: Discovering Real Estate event, exploring careers within the property industry. Through interactive workshops, networking sessions and real-world challenges, students developed valuable employability skills while working alongside industry professionals. Our students were praised for their enthusiasm, confidence and engagement throughout the day, with several professionals commenting that they have bright futures ahead of them in the industry.

From sprints, relays and high jump to javelin, howler throwing and the ever-popular inflatable assault course, every event encouraged teamwork, resilience and participation. Whether competing for points or cheering classmates on, students embraced the day with enthusiasm and outstanding sportsmanship. Sports Day continues to be one of the highlights of the school year, celebrating not only sporting success but the importance of taking part, supporting others and enjoying being active together.
BRINGING ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND TO LIFE Year 10 History students travelled to Hoghton Tower in Preston, where they explored life in Elizabethan England as part of their GCSE studies. Led by expert historians, students discovered what life was like in a Tudor stately home, explored religion and society during the Elizabethan period and even learned what a Tudor banquet would have looked like. The immersive experience helped students deepen their historical knowledge while bringing classroom learning vividly to life.

Students explored habitats from around the world while learning abvvout wildlife conservation and biodiversity.
Students celebrated the many cultures within our school community through activities promoting inclusion, respect and belonging. Many proudly wore traditional cultural dress, creating a colourful celebration of our diverse community.

A day of outdoor activities, teamwork and friendly competition gave students the opportunity to build confidence while enjoying the great outdoors.
Students carried out fieldwork along the North Wales coastline, applying classroom learning to real-world geographical investigations.
