We at Carolina Chrome thought it would be a great idea to start the new year off with a light hearted cover and story. We know you are use to seeing bikers and motorcycles on the cover, and that’s just what you see along with our very own “SUPERMAN”. Our cover story this month is on Charles Neil aka “CHEROKEE”. Cherokee has been a part of the motorcycle community for quite sometime even though he does not ride a bike anymore, he is still one of the biggest parts of our biker community! As you can see on our cover of this months magazine, some of the different covers that Cherokee has photographed for Carolina Chrome. His lighthearted attitude has made him the man he is today taking each day one day at a time. His superman outfit speaks for itself! He is a “Superman” among photographers between weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, retirement dinners, Christmas events, Carolina Chrome , and On The Street magazine . One could only try and guess how many times the buttons on his camera has been pushed! Getting to know Cherokee as a friend and fellow photographer has been more than a pleasure, its been a learning experience. He has answered the many question I have had concerning photography and is always willing to give a hand to help myself and others out. Cherokee’s love for photography started at an early age. When he started high school, his Uncle Charlie, who has been a photographer for over 70 years, started working with Cherokee and teaching him the craft. Cherokee seems to have an eye for the camara and dose quite well, so much so, he turned his closet into a dark room and learned how to develop his film into negatives. As a young man in high school Cherokee worked at a local camp ground with a friend of his by the name of Carl. They had a lot of different jobs at the camp ground and a 4 hour ritual of dumping the garbage cans. They both got a little tired of 4 hours of dumping the garbage, so they asked their boss; “if we could get it done in less 6
time, could we still receive the same amount of pay?” Their boss thought on it awhile and agreed if their job was done, they could receive the same pay. Now this is where you meet a different Cherokee than most of you know. He and Carl would run everyday to dump the trash as fast as they could to have extra time to goof off, as young high school boys have been know to do. With each passing day they got faster and faster, until they had their trash pick up and dump down to 1 hour and 45 minutes. Cherokee didn’t realize how this simple thing of running to dump trash would change his life. The money he made from the job at the campground made it possible for him to purchase a Vivatar enlarger for photographs and he became quite popular with the other budding photographers and friends at school. Which brings us to another part of Cherokee’s story. One day at school when they were having whats called the Presidents Fitness Run and Jump, his buddy Carl, made a comment to the other classmates that he bet Cherokee could out run the fastest runner the track team. Cherokee enters the race at Carl’s beckoning and out runs the high schools fastest runner and helped Carl put over a hundred bucks in his pocket. This brings another turn in Cherokee’s life! The coach comes up to Cherokee and said; “Man I had no idea you could run like that. Would you join our cross country/ track team?”, to which Cherokee agreed. Cherokee gained a great love for running and as years passed he started running in 5k events and marathons that he did really well in. Cherokee did so well in these different runs that he ended up having the honor of receiving a chance to run in the prestigious BOSTON MARATHON. Cherokee would run and train hard for the up coming marathon. One night while out running and training he didnt see a bottle lying on the ground as he rounded a turn and stepped on it causing him to fall and have a severe sprang to his ankle. His doctor knew how much the BOSTON MARATHON meant to Cherokee so he put it in a cast to give his ankle extra support so he could still train. He couldn’t run to train but that didnt stop him! He would ride his bike everyday for miles keeping his legs strong . Cherokee realized he also needed upper body training he was not getting on his bike so he goes this to young woman by the name of Andrea who had an aerobics class and asked her if he could join to which she replied:
“its an all womans class, NO men allowed”. This did not stop the persistent Cherokee! He asked if she would give private lessons to help him. He received another NO. He was relentless, so finally the young lady agreed to allow him to enter the all ladies aerobics class. She made him stand in the front row of the class. With Cherokee in the front row of class she could keep on eye on him and she did just that! Andrea kept her eye on him... for a long time!! The 2 became husband and wife!! Cherokee’s relentless spirit has been a main stay in his life. He was able to run the BOSTON MAROTHON and accomplish a lot more things in his life, owning his own glass company, and designing and building his own home that he still resides in, and owning C. R. NEIL PHOTORAPHY. I would like to express in these final words that a young man with a dream of photography and running, has accomplished a lot more than that in his life. Charles R. Neil is truly a SUPERMAN.

A Devotional for Motorcycle Riders By K. D. Byrd
Motoring on through the valleys Motoring on through the valleys... Everything is beautiful from a motorcycle seat. The sky is bluer, the grass greener, and the breeze sweeter. The mountaintops and the valleys have equal allure. Not so true in life. The mountaintop experiences are gratifying, refreshing and exciting. The lows of the valley are discouraging, intimidating, and scary. It takes a little extra fuel and effort to drive a bike uphill out of a valley just as it takes extra forbearance to pull ourselves out of those valley experiences. Oh, but when we do… the grass has never been greener, the sky never bluer, or the breeze never sweeter! Take courage in knowing that the valley won’t last forever. The mountaintop is waiting just around the bend.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made Heaven and earth.” ~Psalm 121:1-2 “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers . . .” ~I Peter 3:12 “Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” ~Mark 9:23 Prayer: Dear God: See me safely through the valley. Joker Powersports; Parts and Service Grand Opening
By Wally Wersching With all the “Black Friday” sales around the country on November 29th, Joker PowerSports at 105 Stony Point Dr., Blacksburg, SC. had a party to commemorate the opening of their Parts and Service Department. It was scheduled from 7:00AM to 5:00PM with Santa for the kids from 10AM to 1PM, free pizza while it lasted, and many specials on motorcycle parts, along with givaways every hour. It sounded like a great place to go on Friday, so I left home about 1:00PM heading south on the back roads around Shelby. I really enjoyed the ride even though it was a little chilly with sunny skies and temps in the 40’s. I arrived at Joker’s at about 1:30, and parked “Mis Vickie” with the other bikes by the door. I walked inside to visit with Travis. He was busy talking with a couple customers about buying a motorcycle. One of the young men was really enamored with the motorcycle – a beautiful dark blue Harley Street-Glide but I learned that he still owed money on his Sportster, and didn’t have any room to park the new bike. He also said that his wife would “Kill Him” if he bought another bike.
12
I watched him for a while. He was really in love with that bike, and couldn’t keep his eyes or hands off it. I know how he feels. I’ve been there before.
I walked around looking at all the bikes on the showroom floor. They were all in great shape, and reasonably priced. A friend’s husband bought a bike from them last month, and loves it. It’s no wonder that Joker sells a lot of motorcycles to so many happy customers. I missed seeing Santa but heard that he just left. I saw a picture of him on their Facebook page, and he looked like the real Santa. His beard was long, white, and real. I could see his jeans, and biker boots under his red suit. I was sorry that I missed him. I learned that the Parts and Service Department was in the other building. I stopped at the pizza table on my way to get a slice. It was delicious! The Parts and Service Department was stocked with all kinds of motorcycle accessories. If what you w a n t e d wasn’t on the shelves, they could order it and install it for you. It looked very professional.
After talking with Travis for a while, I walked outside. There was a sidewalk sale going on with hundreds of used motorcycle parts – mostly Harley. That’s where I met the Amsoil salesman. I see him many times throughout the year at events. Amsoil, Inc. is an American corporation based in Wisconsin that primarily makes synthetic lubricants, fuel additives, and filters. The company was founded in the 1960’s, and is considered one of the best synthetic oils on the market. The salesman is very friendly and always a pleasure to talk with.
I walked back inside to say good-by to Travis, but I got sucked into playing the spinning wheel at the Iron Horse Law Firm tent. I won an air gauge. I talked with Tom while I was there. He’s very knowledgeable about local ride and other things in the area. We had a very pleasant talk. On the wall by the office, I saw something familiar. It was a Carolina Chrome magazine opened to my article about Joker PowerSports pinned to the wall. The owner really likes it, and has it for all to see. Finally, I said good-by to Travis, and headed out. I stopped in Grover to take a picture of something I don’t usually see. It was a bicycle strapped on the back of a motorcycle. The owner was eating in the restaurant. I should have stopped to take a closer look but decided not to. The ride home was very comfortable. It had warmed to the mid 50’s.

Dr. Dilligaf
Got something to ask dr. dilligaf?? send it to carolinachrome@yahoo.com
Dear Dr., Dilligaf, Why do they have commercials for blind people on tv? Do they think blind people can watch tv? Furthermore, the commercial does not even say the toll-free number out loud.... I’m confused and may invent a braille tv!?! Thanks, A girl that sees things.
Dr. Diligaf, Over the next couple of years I was considering building a custom motorcycle. Primarily for some local riding and an occasional long-distance trip. Any recommendations would be appreciated as I value your opinion. About to get busy.
Hey, Girl that sees things. Those are just the tip of the iceberg. What about braille at and in the elevators? Does it read “now that your blind self has found the elevator please be sure to use the stairs in case of a fire”? How about at the drive through? Braille menus available is what the sign says. If they can read the sign why, do they need the special menus? But most importantly, should they even be driving? If they are driving, do they need to use their headlights? Heaven help a visually impaired person use one of those new key cards at the hotels. There isn’t any braille on them or much direction at all for that matter. I’m sighted and I poke and swipe with those things until I hear a click or see a green light. If that doesn’t work, I call the front desk and ask them to send up the cute girl at the counter. I’m certainly thankful for my less than perfect vision because we sighted people are sending mixed messages to those who can’t see. We care, but not too much. I even think those audible alarms at cross walks for the blind are sketchy at best. If I were blind, I would want a voice saying hurry your ass along Pokey, you about to get hit. Not some gong that you could confuse with a church bell. What I would really love is a visually impaired friend with a good sense of humor. We would go places and I would pretend to lead him out into moving traffic. I could take him shopping and buy some outrageous clothes. Take him to get a haircut at the dog groomers. Set him up with a date with an inflatable doll. Girl, the possibilities are endless. But I think the coolest thing might be to pretend to be blind, grab my red tipped white cane, climb on a motorcycle and follow someone to a drive through and ask for that braille menu. Ten dollars says McDonald’s couldn’t find it. It fell behind the Ice Cream Machine and cause it to overheat. I’m sure that’s why it never works. But me, I’m confused by the advertisements for prescription medicine on TV. What do they expect the response to be? Hey Doc, I saw this new drug on TV, how about write me a scrip and I’ll see if I like it. Can you write me one that doesn’t cause rectal leakage though? Not all my friends are blind, and I understand that those who are may have a heightened sense of smell. Until next time I am {respectfully}.
About to get busy, Finances is probably where I should start this discussion but I’m skipping right past that and I’m going straight for the close. Save your money for two years and then come by my house. I bought another darn bike last week and I need to unload one or two on some unsuspecting soul. I got a drug problem. I need one or more of these bikes drug down the road away from my house. Peace out. Dr. Dilligaf

Chrome Comedy Corner A man decided to book a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life, until the ship sank. He found himself on an island with no people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts. After a few months, he is lying on the beach when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen paddles up to the shore in a row boat. In disbelief, he asks, “Where did you come from? How did you get here?” She replies, “I paddled from the other side of the island where I landed when my fishing boat sank.” “Amazing” he said. “You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you.” “Oh, it didn’t wash up, I built it” explains the woman. “I made it out of some raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm tree branches, and the sides and stern came from an Eucalyptus tree.” “But, where tools?”

“Oh, that was no problem,” replied the woman. “ On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is exposed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in a volcanic vent I found just down island, it melted into ductile iron and I used that to make tools and used the tools to make the hardware.” The guy is stunned. “Let’s row over to my place,” she says “and I’ll give you a tour.” So, after a short time of rowing, she soon docks the boat at a small hand built wharf.
