DR D, Riding in some of these large group rides to VA hospitals and Toys for Tots, “they” say it is illegal to toss candy to the crowd lining the roads in support. Maybe they should just give us a list of shit we can do because it seems like we can’t do anything! Well to be fair, tossing candy while riding on the bike may not be the safest of things to do. Tossing candy standing still is one thing but adding the velocity of a moving motorcycle to the mix can be considered assault and battery with a sweet and delicious weapon. Not to mention the amount of poker run benefits that arise from said injuries after being hospitalized by projectile tootsie rolls. So it is probably best to leave handing out candy to Halloween time.
Doctor Dilligaf, I am a new rider. When buying my first motorcycle do I want top heavy, middle heavy or bottom heavy? What are the differences? Your loyal reader !! Thanks Loyal Reader! ... There is a few ways to answer this question; If you are referring to a bike, let’s get one thing straight: It ain’t the bike! There’s no such thing as topheavy. It’s simple physics. The bike has two wheels— one in the front and one in the back. If you don’t put the kickstand down, obviously the bike will fall over. If you’re going extremely slow and you don’t keep power to the rear wheel with your clutch and throttle, the bike will fall over. It’s called gravity. But if you’re referring to a woman on the back of your bike; Well if ya have a top heavy, be prepared to counter the lean in the turns because a woman that’s top heavy can end up making you take a turn a little harder than you wanna. A bottom heavy woman on your bike tho can give ya a little better balance and helps with the control of the bike, not sure what a middle heavy woman looks like on your bike unless she’s holding the spare tire for ya.

Cheap Lodging

Ride on and stay safe!
I refer to myself as frugal, thrifty, or economical…especially when it comes to lodging accommodations on motorcycle trips. My friends call me cheap…again, especially when it comes to lodging accommodations on motorcycle trips.
About an hour into our stay, one of the rooms lost power. Asking the desk clerk if he could check the breaker, his response was, “I get you ‘nother room. Breaker box around back and not safe to go back there at night!”
While my friends insist on a Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn, I am quite satisfied with the $50.00 Motel 6 or Super 8. I mean, you are only sleeping there, right? Why spend a fortune for a place to crash for the night?
Needless to say, I have developed a reputation as a person who you do not want to pick your hotel. While I have reminded my friends and my wife that I have slept under a deuce and a half in the German snow and covered by a mosquito net in a third world country, they are not impressed and still refuse to allow me to make room reservations.
On a recent road trip that took us through nine states and more than 2000 miles, the subject of lodging was a constant topic of conversation as we landed in a different location every night. Since I was usually the lead rider, I would get on my phone during the day and start looking for hotels that were cheaper options near our intended destination. Our first experience using this method was less than successful. We pulled into the parking lot of a $56.00 a night Econolodge I had chosen online and noticed two sheriff patrol cars sitting near the hotel entrance. Finding this to be odd, I decided to ask the officers what was up before committing to getting a room for the evening. “Hey guys,” I said, “Is this a good place to stay if you are from out of town?” The deputy kind of snickered and replied, “NO! Right now, we’re chasing one of the regular residents who has stabbed himself!” Apparently, this hotel was part of a government funded homeless shelter program and the clientele was less than stellar. There were regular occurrences of theft and assault in and around the premise. We searched for other options… Another evening I found a $69.00 Riverside Inn. When I called, the representative sang the praises of this facility and assured me it was super nice! As we entered the parking area, there was trash all over the place and a guy was washing his underwear in a five-gallon bucket out in front of the building. Again, we searched for other options. Over the years my search for the least expensive (notice I didn’t say cheapest) road trip hotels have been mostly successful, but there have been occasions where it has not achieved the desired results. There have been huge stains on the carpet that resembled blood, bug infested mattresses in the dumpsters outside, and rooms with a single light bulb and only one towel and bath cloth. We were on the way home from DC one year and were forced to rent rooms in a small motel across from Fort AP Hill in Virginia. They were obviously in need of customers as the half burnt out neon sign signified. When it flashed “vacancy” there was a loud buzzing that accompanied the light, and it had an eerie Norman Bates feel. There were almost no cars in the parking lot, and we were able to bargain the desk clerk down to $10.00 a night per person.

My point, cheap rooms are not always the best places to stay. In most cases, the more expensive accommodations are the highest quality… and safest… choices. Except for one. There is a place where the beauty is unequal, where streets are paved in gold, the water is crystal clear, and there is a glorious home that can be yours and yours alone…And it won’t cost a dime! Heaven… In our world today, even a semi-nice home is horribly expensive, apartments can run into the thousands of dollars per month, and a hotel room for the night averages $100.00. If you are forced to accept cheaper options, most of the time the quality takes a nose-dive with the price. Not true with Heaven. If we put our faith in Jesus Christ and choose to live for Him, even though we will struggle today to provide a place for our families, when we reach Heaven, the keys to that home will be handed to us without a bill! So, the next time you are on a road trip, and you are forced to accept less than stellar lodging, remind yourself that if you are a follower of Jesus, a place is being prepared for you even now. Isn’t that AWESOME? “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:2-3

Check Your Tire Pressure Before Leaving on Cool Weather Rides
How much do you think about the tires on your motorcycle? How about the correct level of tire pressure? If the answer is “not often,” you’ll want to reconsider. Let’s discuss why.
Motorcycle tires connect us to the road Whether you’re accelerating, cornering, or braking, safe motorcycle riding relies on two small contact patches where the tires meet the road. Tires are among the most critical design elements on today’s almost maintenancefree motorcycles, delivering performance, service life, and fit beyond anything offered in the past. But your tires do require some attention before you head out on the road. Tire performance is all about the pressure The high standard of performance and value expected from modern motorcycle tires is the result of constant research and testing by tire manufacturers. But the performance depends almost entirely on your tire maintenance habits. The key is proper inflation, which you need to check before every ride. Air always escapes We’ve been filling our tires with air since the beginning of pneumatic tires. Here’s what air is composed of:
• 78% nitrogen • 21% oxygen • 1% water vapor and other trace gases
Even though tires are designed to hold air under pressure, those gas molecules can pass through the rubber through a process known as osmosis. Since the air inside the tire is under more pressure than the outside atmospheric pressure, it helps push the small gas molecules through

the tire’s membrane. Nitrogen molecules—which are larger than oxygen molecules—move more slowly out of the tire, which is why nitrogen has become a popular upgrade for inflating new tires. A tire can lose one to three percent of inflation pressure each month. That’s an important fact to be aware of, because prolonged riding with under inflated tires can damage the tire and increase the rate of pressure loss. Temperature changes impact tire inflation Temperature has a powerful effect on motorcycle tire pressure. As temperatures rise, tire pressure goes up, while pressures fall with lower temperatures. In fact, every 10-degree change in air temperature causes a two percent change in inflation pressure. Combine any air volume loss and a temperature induced pressure reduction, and you could have dangerously under inflated tires. When to take tire pressure readings The correct time to check your motorcycle tire pressure is when they’re cold—meaning the motorcycle hasn’t been ridden for at least three hours. Manufacturer inflation specifications are based on cold readings and take into account the pressure increase that happens as tires warm up on the road. Be sure to use a quality tire pressure gauge to make sure your motorcycle tires are properly inflated. As seasons change from warmer weather to cooler weather and back again, your pre-ride cold readings will keep your tires at proper operating pressure in every season. Ways to Express Appreciation to our Veterans If you’re looking for an appropriate way to honor a veteran in your life, or would like to contribute in a way that’s meaningful for veterans everywhere, here’s a list of suggestions to start you off. Show Up Attend a Veteran’s event in your area -- not just a picnic with friends but an honest-togoodness parade or service for veterans. Roy Rogers said, “We can’t all be heroes; someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by.” Veterans Day is a great opportunity to do just that. Donate There is a plethora of wonderful organizations who offer all manner of support, services, and appreciation for our service members. To get a few ideas for donations, you can check out the following web-page, military.com/veterans-day/ways-to-giveback-to-veterans.html. Fly a flag – correctly The Flag of the United States of America is a symbol of freedom and liberty to which Americans pledge their allegiance. The rules for handling and displaying the U.S. Flag are defined by a law known as the U.S. Flag Code. So, make sure you’re observing the proper rules for display. Not sure exactly what those are? Ask someone about their service It seems like we all know someone who has served, and Veterans Day is a great time to ask them about their service. Some questions to get started are: What did you do in the military? How long did you serve? What was your favorite moment in all your time in the service? Did anyone else in your family serve? Why did you choose to go into the service branch you did? Do not ask if they’ve killed anyone and should your veteran be a combat vet who is either unwilling to share or plainly states what they went through, be supportive without being intrusive. Sometimes you don’t have to say anything, just listen, and give them your full attention. Write If you know a veteran, write a simple postcard or e-card that recognizes them. If you don’t know a veteran, look up the closest military installation and send one there. Small acts of recognizing someone’s service, even anonymously, are appreciated. Don’t Confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day Veterans Day is a time to thank those who are serving or have served and are still with us. Memorial Day is to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in service to their country. Confusing the two or combining the two diminishes the importance of both. Visit a VA Hospital Find out what the policies are at your nearest VA hospital for interacting with patients or volunteering and spend the day with a veteran. Many VA facilities will have events throughout the year. Even if you never interact with a veteran, helping at a facility is a way to give back. Get Outdoors with a Veteran Invite a veteran or a military family to explore local parks and recreational events. Being outside helps improve physical and mental health, boosts emotional wellbeing, and is a great way to celebrate a veteran.

Of course, Travis OK’d it, and some of his Wicked Wrench mechanics stayed to help Big Mike. The little repair was a spun bearing. The cases had to be split, and the engine completely torn down. They didn’t get Mike’s bike back on the road until well after midnight. The mechanics learned a lot from Mike, and Mike got a lot of help from the mechanics. It was a win-win situation – a fitting end to a great day.

Do You Have A Green Porch Light, YET? This Is What It Means...
A green porch light is used to
express support and appreciation for U.S. military veterans. These lights are often used on or around November 11 in honor of Veterans Day. They are also commonly seen in May in recognition of Memorial Day. However, some people choose to use a green porch light all year to show respect for U.S. veterans. It started in 2013 with a campaign led by Walmart, called the “Greenlight a Vet Campaign.” This campaign worked to guarantee jobs for honorably discharged U.S. veterans after they returned home from service. In addition, Walmart also encouraged members of their communities to change their porch lights to green in order to show appreciation for Veterans across the nation. The campaign described the color green as renewal and hope. With all of these positive ideas in mind, Walmart hoped to start a new conversation about U.S. Veterans as valued members of every community. You’ll still see these green lights around November 11, which is Veterans Day. 24
