Christian is a senior firefighter/ EMT, specializing in technical rescue. He became a volunteer firefighter in 1996 while attending Lander University. After realizing a teaching career was not his calling, he worked for several years in aviation in the Columbia area. In 2003 Christian moved to Ninety Six and married his wife (Amy) and became a professional firefighter in March of that year. Christian has been trained in many facets of rescue including High Angle Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Hazardous Materials Technician, Clandestine Lab Technician and many others. He has dedicated much of his free time honing his outdoorsman skills over the years and now teaches Wilderness First Aid through ASHI (American Safety and Health Institute) and Search and Rescue Technician training through NASAR (National Association of Search and Rescue). Christian’s passion for rescue, the outdoors and wilderness survival allowed him the opportunity to become a founding member of a Mountain Search and Rescue unit for the state of South Carolina. He currently has the honor of commanding a Search and Rescue Unit for the state under the auspices of the South Carolina State Guard and the Adjutant General of the state of South Carolina. Christian is blessed both personally and professionally. He feels with the support of his loving wife, a young son and a continually challenging career, that he is right where he is supposed to be. In his hard to come by personal time he plays the guitar, enjoys boating, runs Tough Mudders, shoots and last but not least, rides that Harley Davidson! Also, a special thank you to Chief Roberts of the Lower Lake Greenwood Fire Dept for the use of his station.

Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Dilligaf, I saw my Pal put something pretty funny on another buddies tire stems. NOW my buddy is pissed and geez it was just a joke. Anyway, it looks like our group is going to separate and divide. Why can’t people take a joke or am I looking at it the wrong way?

Dr. Dilligaf, What about the roll through a red light thing that I heard about a while back? I believe it was something to the effect that if a motorcycle was at a red light and it was clear he could proceed through the light. Am I wrong?

You are looking at it the wrong way. For many people their bike is there biggest investment of time and or money. They would let you mess with their significant other before they would want you to touch their ride. I’m not like that but I would venture to say that I’m an exception. I have seen people throw hands for less. Not saying that they should but they sure as heck do. Now having said that, maybe it would be best for your group to separate, divide and reform with the immature riders that can’t reconcile their disagreements forming one group and the adults forming another. Either way the fool that messes with another’s ride and the child who can’t get over it need to both grow up. ~Dr. Dilligaf

Yes and no. In the State of SC we have a “safe on red” law on the books. It was adopted in 2008 and works thusly. After making a complete stop (no roll) and waiting for a minimum of 120 seconds, the rider of a motorcycle, moped, or bicycle may treat a steady red light that doesn’t change as a stop sign and proceed with caution. I might add this one tidbit though, when you proceed you proceed in jeopardy in that if any accidents occur you do not have much of a defense of fault. ~Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Diligaf is meant for entertainment only! Dr. Dilligaf, I’ve noticed recently that there is a trend to put the new thicker tire on the front of Street Glides and Road Glides? Do you recommend them and why?

I do recommend them for Chubby Chasers, oh wait a minute you are talking about wider front tires not thicker. There is a difference you know. I like the look of the wider tires on the front of touring bikes. One thing for certain it will track better than one of those skinny big wheelers. It can also handle a SC pot hole a lot better and won’t chase a crack in the asphalt like it has a mind of it’s own. I believe that the initial thought was to rebel against the previous hot trend which was the Big Wheelers. You know the human mind set, if there is something you see that you don’t like then go the opposite direction. Maybe that’s where some of the current sexual ambiguity originated. If you like the look I say go for it. I’ve ridden several bikes with the wider tire, some with the whole kit and some with a wider tire on stock front suspension. Handling and maneuverability were good. Now if you were actually talking about a thicker tire I would say no. Thicker is only better if want more cushion and push back. ~Dr. Dilligaf

It is no secret that through the years The Motor Company has struggled at times to keep pace with the times. From the 2 cycle off road bikes to the 500 and 750 Streets Harley has at times thrown a lot of new models out to see which ones would stick. Some have been ultimate successes such as the XR750 which has now been around for fifty years. The Sportster platform, whether you love them or hate them has been around most of my life. Heck, HD even made a bike with a Boxer style engine during WWII at the governments request. People have oft times rebelled and complained but the truth of the matter is that those efforts have kept the doors open while all other American Motorcycle companies failed.

Well, I would like to say that after taking a test ride on the Pan America and seriously putting it through it's paces I believe HD has hit a Home Run. I have years of experience on a variety of different bikes including but not limited too Triumph, BSA, HD, BMW, Yamaha and Kawasaki. I loved them all for various reasons or I wouldn't have ridden them. I still have a BMW and a Kawasaki KLR in my shop among the Harleys. Clearing a space out now for a Pan America. Harleys first venture into the Adventure Tourer segment is impressive. The R & D people at HD must have ridden the bikes from Ducati, KTM, Triumph, BMW and Suzuki and garnished what those companies have learned through the evolution of their machines. In short the Pan America checks all the boxes. From power to performance and comfort this machine has it all. The price point is just a little steeper than other similarly equipped bikes but that is to be expected for anything that carries a Made in the USA tag. Go give one a test drive and expect to be impressed. ~Dr. Dilligaf

HOW A CONVICTED MURDERER CHANGED MY LIFE In 1985 my brother John and I raised our hands, took the oath of enlistment, and just like that, we were soldiers. We had walked into Army Recruiter Jim Sutton’s office only a few weeks earlier and expressed a desire to join the Army and he was happy to oblige. Prior to the Army, my brother John was an auto-body man with steady work at a local body shop, and I was a cotton mill employee who had been laid off several times due to cutbacks. To be truthful, my work ethic wasn’t what it should have been and the company choosing to lay me off rather than “good employees” makes sense to me today. In those days, my main focus was alcohol, cigarettes, women, and trying to be cool. On top of all that, I was lazy and didn’t want to work. I felt that people just could not accept the fact that I was a genius, and menial labor was beneath me. My girlfriend at the time tried to talk sense into me, but I refused to listen, and began a self-inflicted downward spiral. I was on a path to certain self-destruction.

I began to wonder about Jim Sutton. His life had not turned out for the best, but because of him, mine was amazing. He may have believed he was simply filling his quota of young soldiers when we walked into his office in 1985, but God had put him in my path. Because of him, and people like him, I am who I am today. It really isn’t hard to find an inmate who is incarcerated in the South Carolina prison system and Jim Sutton had spent the last 30 years just over in the next county. I contacted the Chaplain at the prison where Jim now resided, explained who I was, and asked what it would take to visit him. She informed me that while that would prove difficult, she would be happy to ask Jim if he would like to speak with me by phone. She made no promises, thanked me for reaching out, and said goodbye. I figured that was it. A few days later, my phone rang and the Chaplain said an inmate would like to speak with me. It was Jim Sutton, and I was elated! While Jim did not specifically remember me, I detailed the past 28 years of my life. From the day we first walked into his office, to the day of my retirement ceremony. I talked of how God had used him to take a drunk cotton mill reject and mold him into a strong Christian man with a stellar military career. I said to him, “Jim, thank you for my life.”

Jim Sutton had started a small fire in me back in 1985 that grew into an inferno years later. My personal life also took a turn for the better. I became a bornagain Christian, I have not tasted a drop of alcohol for 28 years, and tobacco left me more than 25 years ago. Here we are in 2021, and that old cotton mill reject has held not one, but two jobs for most of his life, and it is directly related to the discipline I learned in the military. Commitment to God, my family, and my country has changed my life.

Wicked Ol’ Bike Show & Swap Meet... Formally Known as Antique Bikes on Main!

For the past fifteen years, the last weekend of July was filled with motorcycles, and other fun stuff at the three-day event - “Antique Bikes on Main” in Chesnee, SC. Due to the pandemic, last year’s event was canceled. We were all looking forward to this year’s event, but it was canceled too by the city of Chesnee due to the pandemic. Everybody was accustomed to coming to the event so to fill the void, a few enterprising individuals came up with the idea of having their own event outside of Chesnee similar to the ”Antique Bikes on Main” but not affiliated with it in any way. Travis, the owner of Wicked Wrench Motorcycle Company in Spartanburg and the members of the Legends Chapter of the Antique Motorcycle of America (AMCA) got together to hold an event at Wicked Wrench on July 31st. They had a “Peoples’ Choice” motorcycle show with 1st to 3rd places awarded. The trophies were hand-crafted by the members of the Legends chapter. The music was supplied by Rocky Yelton and the Hired Guns. There was plenty of room in the parking lot next to the Wicked Wrench Motorcycle Company for many vendors to sell their 20

wares and spares. There were even a few complete motorcycles for sale too. It started at 9:00AM, and was scheduled to end at 3:00PM, but there were people there well before the start, and far after the finish times. There was a 50/50 raffle, and other raffles for door prizes. There was food and cold drinks available too. It was the place to be on Saturday July 31st!! The weather on the 31st was perfect for the event – sunny and hot. I left home at about 10:30 heading south to I85. I85 heading south toward Spartanburg is a mess – under destruction with a speed limit of only 35 mph. At least it wasn’t stop-and-go. I arrived at Wicked Wrench at a little after 11:00AM. Everything was going in full swing. The band was playing, and the bikes were already lined up for the bike show. I found a parking spot in front of the main building. I started to walk around - taking pictures. The first place I saw was the roped off area for the bike show. There were a lot of bikes crammed into that area. Many were very unusual and beautiful bikes. I guess that it would be a popularity contest to see who wins. Everybody has a vote.

I learned later from their Facebook page that the 3rd place winner was Kevin Hensley, and his 2004 Harley Electra Glide; the 2nd place win-

ner was Bob Hunnicutt, and his 1952 Harley FL Panhead; and the 1st place winner was Jeremy Simmons, and his 2000 Harley Street Glide. All were great bikes! Then I started to walk around visiting the tents. The first tent I stopped at was the Free Indeed Motorcycle Ministry. I met “Cowboy” and “Squid” there. We had a very pleasant conversation. I hadn’t seen them for quite a while. I continued walking around looking at all the motorcycle parts for sale. I brought a couple hundred dollars if I found something I needed for “Miss Vickie” but didn’t find any Victory motorcycle parts for sale. In fact, I didn’t see another Victory motorcycle at all during the event. I did see an interesting motorcycle for sale. It was a 1980 Harley shovelhead. It had been modified but might have started as a wide-glide. It was only $3,000.00. If I was in the market for an older Harley so I could join the AMCA, that would be the bike to buy. The next tent that I stopped by was the Veteran’s Last Patrol. I learned that they go to visit and befriend veterans who are in hospice. The next person I bumped into was “Pops” the Chaplain for the Armored Saints Biker Ministry. He was filling a gas generator. I met him before at a Crimson Crusaders event. He’s a US Marine vet and we hit it off right away. I heard that he had a motorcycle accident and asked him about it. His explanation of the event was inspiring – how God was with him when he T-Boned a pick-up truck. By all rights, he should be dead but God was with him, and he only had a very minor injury to his hand. The bike was totaled though. I continued to walk around taking pictures, and talking with people I met. I found myself back at “Miss Vickie” in front of the main building. To my surprise, I bumped into Travis. We exchanged pleasantries, and talked for about two minutes. He was very busy making sure that the event went off without a hitch. It did! Everybody did a great job for their first event. Humidity & Motorcycles... Does It Matter?

We all know about SC and HUMIDITY, right? Well, if you don’t, take it from a chick with naturally curly hair... It’s a “thing”! My motorcyle seem to have the same disposition as I do... the bigger the hair, the faster we ride!! Well, my hair only gets bigger and on the up side; my bike is a little cleaner from hitting all the random POTHOLES containing rain water! As, Editor-in-Chief of The #1 Magazine for Bikers in SC, I feel like we need to have a chat about this horrible SC HUMIDITY! It’s ONLY Humid 14 out of 12 months in the year! UGHH! So what does that mean for our bikes? Well, I keep mine on a lift in the garage and figure my husband can fin for himself... I AM A LADY even though I cuss a lot... Back to big hair & motorcycles... well, alot of our readers havent seen hair in years however just imagine, guys! Here goes the facts I found But if it’s In blue... its just my opinon. Beware, “they say”! (I probably should’ve “blued” the above paragraph...)

Like all events the last weekend is always the most crowded and the most activities. As you pack, remember that safety should be at the top of your list. The first and most important thing is the helmet. Although it is not required by law for adults in South Carolina, it does protect you a lot. Covering your face and eyes protecting them from particles. Then comes the real part, motorcycle jackets are also very important and necessary. Even though you are riding safely and with caution, you do not know when an accident may occur. As you prepare for the trip, remember SC fall weather can fool you. It can be hot, cool and even cold at times. Weather.com is currently predicting temperatures will be in the low 80’s with a New Moon occurring on October 6. Check the weather often and pack with layers in mind. Packing your supplies is a major part in preparing for the trip, if you do not have the right things with you the weather can get troublesome around you. Here are basic things that you would want to pack for the trip.

Now that you are doing your packing make sure you pack wisely. The basic rule is to pack the most required things at an easily accessible place. Make sure you can get items you need most like sunscreen, skin lotions, eye drops, flashlight, etc. where you can get them easy and quick.

This is important because if you must stop you don’t want to be searching all over for them. For instance, the sun was burning your skin but you didn’t know where the sun-block was and now you have roasted skin. From Georgetown to Little River, there are local venues offering great live music. Make sure and check as many out as possible. Some favorites include Suck Bang Blow, The Broken Spoke, Murphy’s, Captain Archies and Bubba’s Bar and Grill. There are way more, so you can’t go wrong if you just pull in where you see bikes gathered. The 3rd Annual Palmetto DreamRide

The 3rd Annual Palmetto DreamRide took place on June 26, 2021 and was quite a large event. They had representatives of the Iron Legacy Motorcycle Club from areas of Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina. The DreamRide organization is a charitable organization organized under the Homefront Foundation. Representatives from several chapters as well as non-affiliated club members gathered at Thunder Tower Harley Davidson in Elgin, South Carolina and rode as a group of over 60 motorcycles to the American Legion Post #15 in Sumter, South Carolina, where the annual Palmetto DreamRide Car and Bike Show was held. In all, the Palmetto DreamRide raised over $4,000 in generous donations for the Hometown Foundation in support of the Special Olympics. The donations gathered will

be added to the funds raised throughout the rest of the country and will be presented by members of the Iron Legacy Motorcycle Club International Board to the Hometown Foundation at the annual DreamRide Experience event held in Farmington, Connecticut this year on August 20, 2021, through August 22, 2021.

The Iron Legacy Motorcycle Club takes great pride in its charitable works and hopes to beat their previous donation of $75,000 in 2020 in support of the DreamRide Charity. This was a fun event for a great charity.
