In the first magazine issue this year, you read about Cherokee's health problems with a bacterial infection in his hip that transferred to his liver causing cancer. As this year has passed by, so has Cherokee's health problems! Currently he has no bacteria in the hip and a brand new liver from a successful liver transplant! With all this said; looks like he has been having fun and doing it right! In January, he faced having 6 months to live. Now, eleven month later, he is Santa for the cover of Carolina Chrome December issue. Dr. Dilligaf, In your opinion what is the most dangerous part on a motorcycle? Also, what are some riding tips that you can give either a novice or an experienced rider that can help keep them safe? Safety First Safety first, Those are a couple of good questions, for this time of year especially. While riders in cooler parts of our country are asking what is the best way to winterize a motorcycle we in SC are looking towards a busy period of motorcycle activity as toy runs and support rides for charities are quickly filling our calendars. Your first question is the easiest to answer. There is one part on a bike of any type be that a sport bike, cruiser or touring bike that is inarguably the most dangerous. It is the nut that holds the handlebars. If you rush out to your motorcycle to check yours then your nut may be more dangerous than most. The nut that I am talking about can be too loose, too tight or too lubricated to be safe. A motorcycle operator is usually at minimum at least partially responsible for crashes or injury. Statistics give us a good look at what I am talking about. Drinking, inexperience, speeding and careless operation (not using common sense) are all contributing factors to the steady increase in motorcycle crashes. Notice I did not say accident. Accidents are primarily unavoidable. Crashes on the other hand almost always are. The butt hurt, panty waist, narcissistic riders of today are always looking to place the blame on anything but their own foolishness. Riding a motorcycle is an inherently dangerous pursuit. After all you straddle a high horse powered piece of machinery with limited protection other than what is behind your eyes and between your ears. And apparently that protection is not sufficient to keep many safe. Now let me share a few statistics to bolster my claims. 27% of riders who die in a wreck have a BAC over .08% 71% of motorcycle fatalities involve a rider without a helmet. 34% of fatal or serious injury wrecks are due to excessive speed. Motorcycles in our state account for less than 1% of registered vehicles but account for 14% of all traffic fatalities. Riders under the age of 40 are 36 times more likely to be killed than other riders. You are 26 times more likely to die riding a motorcycle than operating a car. Most deadly crashes occur on Saturday. The majority of operators killed in crashes donot have a motorcycle endorsement. In 41% of two vehicle crashes involving a fatality, the other vehicle was turning left in front of a motorcycle going straight. Motorcycle deaths have doubled in SC since 1997.
Are you beginning to understand my logic here? We are the masters of our destiny, we can wear safety gear, we can ride soberly, be especially cautious at intersections, slow down, take a riders course and many other things to make sure that we get home safe. We have many inexperienced, untrained riders sometimes riding beside us or too close behind us who lack common sense. Common sense just is not as common as it used to be. I see riders get irate over someone blowing grass in the road and then go somewhere and drink until they calm down. WTH? How about just do not ride beyond your skill level or sight distance? I believe in the right to not wear a helmet, but I also salute the ones who make a good choice. Bottom line is we should all operate our bikes as if our lives depended on it because it does. If you choose to disregard any or all this advice just remember you asked the Doctor and only a fool goes to the Doctor and doesn’t listen to what he has to say. ONE BROTHERHOOD VS ONE DISEASE
Lee "Elmo" Elmore was diagnosed on August 12, 2020 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy at MUSC in Charleston where he is required to stay in the hospital until the month of treatments are complete. He will be receiving a bone marrow transplant in what we think will be early to mid-October. After the bone marrow transplant he will be required to stay within 30 minutes of MUSC for a minimum of 3 months, which will require Lee and Nikki to find housing during this time and Nikki to be out of work to care for him. For now, his wife, Nikki Elmore is going back and forth, staying in hotels to be close to Elmo during his stay, she is the only visitor allowed at this time. They have a 9-year-old son that is very much missing his Dad. On Saturday, September 26, 2020, a benefit was held at the Camden Trinity MC Clubhouse. The day was filled with music and fellowship as people that know Elmo and other bikers joined to raise money to assist him and Nikki through this challenging time. All money raised from this benefit went to help him and his family with medical bills, travel and hotel stays and supplement the income they will be missing while he is out of work. Thank you from his Brothers and Sisters that love him and his family.
