Presidential Proclamation on Patriot Day, 2019 Issued on: September 10, 2019
On Patriot Day, we solemnly remember the nearly 3,000 people who perished on September 11, 2001. With gratitude, we honor the brave first responders, resolute members of our military, and ordinary Americans who showed extraordinary courage to save others on that fateful day. We will always be grateful for the heroic men and women of our Armed Forces who fought in defense of our country in the aftermath of the largest terrorist attack on American soil, and we will never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our liberty and freedom. Many Americans vividly recall the precise moment when terrorists killed our fellow Americans at the World Trade Center in New York City; at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia; and on a quiet field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. A beautiful September morning was marred by stark disbelief, agonizing sorrow, and profound suffering. America’s strength, courage, and compassion, however, never wavered. First responders instantly rushed into harm’s way to save their fellow Americans from the wreckage of the attacks, the passengers and crew of United Flight 93 decisively fought back and saved countless lives at the cost of their own, and Americans from across the country provided aid, assistance, and comfort to those in need. Against the backdrop of cowardly acts of terror, America once again demonstrated to the world the unmatched strength of our resolve and the indomitable power of our character. This year, I was proud to sign into law the Permanent Authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act. This bipartisan legislation, named in honor of New York first responders Officer James Zadroga, Firefighter Ray Pfeifer, and Detective Luis Alvarez, permanently reauthorizes compensation for victims and their families, first responders, and those on the front lines of rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero. Through this legislation, our Nation is fulfilling our sacred duty to those who risked their lives for their fellow Americans on that infamous September day 18 years ago. Our prayers will continue for the survivors who still bear physical and emotional wounds and for the families who lost loved ones. We also pray for the members of our Armed Forces who risk their lives in service to our country and for the first responders who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of others. Today, let us remember that our Union — forged and strengthened through adversity — will never be broken and that the immeasurable sacrifices of our patriots will never be forgotten. By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107–89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.” NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2019, as Patriot Day. I call upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day in honor of the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. I invite the Governors of the United States and its Territories and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. I call upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. roadblock appeared out of nowhere. As I write this article, he is awaiting test results to see if he will be diagnosed with lung cancer. He has faced cancer before and not only survived, but he thrived! Today though, they are cautiously awaiting answers to see what direction they need to take. Please keep them in your prayers.
A Biker’s Devotional By Dennis Reynolds Change In Direction/ A Different Road A few years ago, some friends and I decided to ride the eighteen hundred or so miles out to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. The round-trip route we chose would take us through seventeen states and some of the most beautiful countryside America has to offer. Now, we absolutely could have done the Iron Man thing and busted our butts to get there in just two days, but instead we decided to make it a four-day ride so we could enjoy the trip. Days one and two were uneventful, allowing my companions and I to enjoy amazing scenery as we put the first thousand miles behind us with no real issues. Day three would be somewhat different. When you are on a fourteen-day road trip, it goes without saying, you will almost always run into some sort of bad weather. We had stopped on I-29 somewhere near Sioux City, Iowa to take a break when Bill Edwards popped out his phone to make a quick check of the weather. As an over the road trucker he is somewhat anal about doing that, and I am glad he is because we were heading directly into a huge thunderstorm. From looking at the radar, we could tell the storm cell would be crossing our path just before we reached Sioux Falls. This was bad. While we had no issue with donning our rain suits and toughing it out, due to the size and intensity of the storm, we decided to make a left onto Highway 20 which runs to Valentine, Nebraska and then head north to I-90 in
South Dakota. It was out of the way and would most assuredly add time to our trip, but at least we would stay dry. EMS ROADDOCS RC, MIDLANDS SC CHAPTER The EMS RoadDocs membership is made up of individuals who work in healthcare such as Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, Respiratory Therapists and EMT's and others who are associated with healthcare who love to ride and are committed to the Brotherhood and Sisterhood and believe in helping their communities. Members of this organization not only share a passion for helping and healing the citizens of their communities, but also for each other and the open road. This organization takes great pride in its efforts to support various charities and other rides. We wanted to bring the finest America has to offer, together in friendship and service. There is a natural bond among us that serve our country in one way or another and the EMS RoadDocs is a way to bring us together. Dr. Dilligaf, So, my husband and I go on a bunch of charity runs and bike nights here and there in the low country area. I love riding on the back and hanging out with people until he starts his shit! He throws ADULT TANTRUMS over the dumbest things, like having to wait in line for the bathroom or a drink. He gets one or two “beverages” in him and he bitches about everything! It is embarrassing but mostly annoying…Everyone tells me to ride my own, but I do not want to. Any advice? Thank God for social distancing with him, although six feet is sometimes not far enough. Signed Moife (half Mom, half wife) of an adult man!

I think we should round those people up and place them in a room with people who wear a mask on their chin without covering there pie and blow holes and let them duke it out with each other to decide who the biggest idiot is. Respectfully (not), Dr. Dilligaf Dr. Dilligaf, What is your take on folks who are riding around on motorcycles (on the interstates and back roads) trying to wear masks over their faces? SMH SMH, I am shaking my head as well. Those people and the ones who drive alone in their cars with windows up and masks on. They must me trying hard to make a point or they fear giving themselves an illness which they must already have. Either way I fail to understand the rationale. I recently had to fly out to the Midwest and was required to wear a

With the coronavirus forcing the cancellation of the 2020 American Legion Legacy Run – what was supposed to be the American Legion Riders’ 15th annual national fundraising ride – alternative plans have formed at the national and department level. Nationally, the donation period for the 2020 Legacy Run has been expanded, while a new tiered donation program for The American Legion Legacy Fund also has been implemented. While a handful of American Legion departments were able to conduct in-state Legacy Runs, following social distancing in the process, other departments have been forced to either cancel or postpone theirs until at least this fall. South Carolina had conducted an in-state Legacy Run every year since 2012, raising more than $440,000 for the Legacy Fund. But the coronavirus forced the postponement of this year’s April ride to Oct. 24, along with scaling the ride back from two days to one. But L.Z. Harrison, past state director and current state secretary of the South Carolina American Legion Riders, said even the fall in-state Legacy Run could be altered to a virtual ride or having chapters do their own ride if COVID-19 numbers start to peak in the state. But that hasn’t stopped Harrison’s Richland County Chapter 6 ALR from continuing to raise money for the Legacy Fund, which provides money to cover college expenses for children whose parents are U.S. servicemembers who died while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001, or whose parents are post-9/11 veterans with a combined Department of Veterans Affairs disability rating of 50 percent or greater. “I went out to all our normal donors and said, ‘Look, we can’t do a ride right now, but that doesn’t take into account that these children still need help with their education,'” said Harrison, Chapter 6’s director. “Our chapter alone, we collected $19,000. That is only through donations, through the members donating themselves and our corporate donors that we have.” 20

The expansion of American Legion Legacy Scholarship fund to the children of disabled veterans in 2016 has made soliciting donations easier for Harrison and Chapter 6. Since then, 188 scholarships totaling $3.2 million have been awarded through the fund. “I’m able to use those numbers to show corporate donors, as well as individuals, how the fund is getting used and how much it’s being utilized by the children of our disabled or fallen heroes,” he said. Harrison and some other Chapter 6 Riders recently also provided an escort to longtime member Bernie Shankman, who passed away in February and was interred in Arlington National Cemetery in late July after a delay because of the pandemic. Harrison said Shankman, 96, was beloved by his fellow American Legion Riders; to memorialize the 32-year Legionnaire, Harrison had made “In Memory of Bernie Shankman” patches that are available for purchase in order to benefit the Legacy Fund. “I wanted to have something to remember (Shankman),” Harrison said. “And he enjoyed the Legacy ride as well. It’s special for us to donate money in his honor.” Even with the possibility of an in-state ride still months away, Harrison said his ALR chapter wasn’t going to stop its fundraising efforts. “We can’t say, ‘Well, this year we can’t help you out because of COVID.’ We have to continue pushing forward and doing the best we can, even though we wouldn’t do a ride,” he said. “It’s important to us to ensure that we donate money so these children will have a chance at a higher education. "These families have paid a sacrifice, whether it’s the ultimate sacrifice or whether a parent is disabled from their military service. They paid a sacrifice to their nation, so we can’t forget their children.” As the Legacy Run donation period continues, we want to share stories similar to that of Chapter 6’s in American Legion national media.
